Told through a jaded teenage voice (Linda Manz) and expressive images of nature, DAYS OF HEAVEN is a moody love triangle involving two migrant farm workers (Richard Gere, Brooke Adams) and a rich Restored 35mm Print landowner (Sam Shepard). The vast plains were shot primarily during “magic hour” – between sunset and nightfall, when light seems to come from everywhere (and nowhere) – by Haskell Wexler and Nestor Almendros, who won the year’s cinematography Oscar. Ennio Morricone (THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE UGLY) composed the evocative Oscar-nominated score. The entire directorial oeuvre of Terrence Malick, a true film maverick, consists of BADLANDS (1973), DAYS OF HEAVEN (1978) and, 25 years later, THE THIN RED LINE (1998). His next project, CHE, with Benicio Del Toro in an epic about Aregentine populist revolutionary Che Geuvara, is due in 2005.
