FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR
WELCOME! In 2004, Denver
Film Society celebrates
27 years of bringing the
best of world cinema to
the Rocky Mountains.
Our primary platform, the Starz
Denver International Film Festival,
is augmented by a continuing
Ron Henderson, right, with Francis catalogue of exciting cinematic
Ford Coppola at the 26th Starz
events presented year round:
Denver International Film Festival
festivals, series, first-run engagements,
special screenings, meet-the-filmmaker programs and Denver Film
Society member events.
As you will see, there is a lot to enjoy, learn and talk about with
fellow film-lovers over these three months. Most of it happens at
Starz FilmCenter, the theatrical home and education center of
Denver Film Society and University of Colorado at Denver’s College
of Arts & Media, operated in partnership with Starz Encore Group.
Please join us for film, wine and conversation at the home of quality,
cutting-edge cinema in Denver.
I would like to acknowledge the Denver Film Society’s experienced,
dedicated staff, managing year-round film programs with the help
of generous sponsors, loyal members and enthusiastic volunteers.
See you at the movies!

FILM EDUCATION
How to Watch Art Film
Three-week course: Apr 15, Apr 22 & Apr 29;
6:30pm to 9:00pm
Presented by Starz FilmCenter Director of Education Howie Movshovitz
Art-house movies aren’t quite like the pictures at local
multiplexes and in saturated TV ad campaigns; they take
time, show different characters
Starz FilmCenter at the Tivoli
and offer different pleasures.
900 Auraria Pkwy - Denver
Join Howie Movshovitz for three
303.820.FILM• denverfilm.org
sessions looking inside art-house
films, getting a sense of how they work, what they’re about,
and how to “see” them. The course covers questions of film
history, style, editing rhythms, humor, irony, casting and
acting, featuring three classics:
Francois Truffaut’s THE 400
BLOWS (1959), Ingmar Bergman’s
THE SILENCE (1964), and Jim
Jarmusch’s STRANGER THAN
PARADISE (1983). Noncredit
course open to college and
continuing-education students. Cost: $120.00 via cash, check
or credit card to University College, 303-871-2291.

Satoshi Kon – the highly respected director of groundbreaking
anime features MILLENNIUM ACTRESS and PERFECT
BLUE – has now created
Starz FilmCenter at the Tivoli
TOKYO GODFATHERS,
900 Auraria Pkwy - Denver
qualifying him as “one of our

leading filmmakers,” writes
A.O. Scott, The New York Times, with an imagination
“every bit as prodigious and strange as Sylvain Chomet’s
[THE TRIPLETS OF BELLEVILLE] and twice as much
as Pixar’s.” With anime and Japanese influences rocketing
across recent Hollywood fare – witness KILL BILL, LOST IN
TRANSLATION and THE LAST SAMURAI – Kon integrates
state-of-the-art anime technology with solid storytelling
inspired by John Ford’s 1948 western, 3 GODFATHERS.

on Christmas Eve, stumbling on a baby girl left at a garbage
dump. As they head for Tokyo’s brighter neighborhoods, where
people are enjoying holiday festivities, the trio seeks the infant’s
parents. They encounter various personalities and adventures
that force each of them to confront life, beginning to realize
they’d almost thrown them all away. TOKYO GODFATHERS
is one of the first anime films with a central gay character.

This documentary from Asian action star Robin Shou
(MORTAL KOMBAT) – interwoven with a new martial-arts

the world’s most illustrious
stunt professionals – past and present – through interviews
and clips of their work, exploring death-defying feats and
often foolhardy working methods. (Often without a wire – or
a health-care plan.) These stuntmen and stuntwomen also
explain how they trace their profession back to the original
“Red Trousers,” a term used to describe the costumes of
young acrobats groomed for Beijing Opera (where Jackie Chan
trained from the age of six). RED TROUSERS uses behind-thescenes footage from LOST TIME to deconstruct the short film’s
stunts and show how they were set up and shot.
A box-office hit in its home country, BROKEN WINGS is
the moving story of the life and loves of the Ullman family:
an ordinary Israeli mother and

her four children – including

documentary-like cinematic style, it simply and directly pushes
the lives of these ordinary people in front of the audience.
There are no deliberate melodramas or dramatization. It just

With a story and style that
inspired George Lucas’s AMERICAN GRAFFITI (1973), Martin
Scorsese’s MEAN STREETS (1973) and Barry Levinson’s
DINER (1982), this film was Fellini’s second solo directorial
effort. He followed with, among other greats, LA DOLCE VITA
(1960) – which made a star of Marcello Mastroianni – and his
autobiographical masterpiece 8 1/2 (1963).

Terrence Malick’s picturesque 1978 film is pure Americana:

of-the-century Texas. Told
through a jaded teenage voice (Linda Manz) and expressive
images of nature, DAYS OF HEAVEN is a moody love
triangle involving two migrant farm workers
(Richard Gere, Brooke Adams) and a rich
Restored
35mm Print landowner (Sam Shepard). The vast plains
were shot primarily during “magic hour” –
between sunset and nightfall, when light seems
to come from everywhere (and nowhere) – by Haskell Wexler
and Nestor Almendros, who won the year’s cinematography
Oscar. Ennio Morricone (THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE
UGLY) composed the evocative Oscar-nominated score.
The entire directorial oeuvre of Terrence Malick, a true film
maverick, consists of BADLANDS (1973), DAYS OF HEAVEN
(1978) and, 25 years later, THE THIN RED LINE (1998).
His next project, CHE, with Benicio Del Toro in an epic about
Aregentine populist revolutionary Che Geuvara, is due in 2005.
