On behalf of the City of Durango, I extend a
warm welcome to everyone attending the 9th annual
independent film festival presented by Durango Film.
If you are a resident, thanks for supporting the arts
in Durango. If you are a visitor, thanks for taking this
opportunity to visit our dynamic small city. I hope that you
all will enjoy the diverse festival offerings.
Between screenings, please explore Durango. Walk
through historic downtown and sample the restaurants,
shops, and galleries. Wander along the seven miles of
the Animas River Trail and visit the Durango Discovery
Museum. Check out the Smithsonian traveling exhibit
Journey Stories at the Animas Museum, which you can
reach via the free Main Avenue Trolley. Explore Native
Views, Native Visions at the Center of Southwest Studies
at Fort Lewis College. Consider adding a day to your
trip to sample more of these attractions, to ski, or to visit
Mesa Verde National Park. And, if the spirits move you,
don’t neglect to sample our five microbreweries.
Have a splendid time! And don’t forget to vote for your
favorite films.

My love for the film
festival experience began
20 years ago when I
was living in Park City,
Utah, having lunch in a
restaurant during the
Sundance Film Festival.
A man stood up and
asked if anyone in the
room wanted a free ticket
to a festival screening, and
I immediately answered
with an overly enthusiastic
“I do!” That screening of an Australian film with a Q&A after is
how my journey began. Learning about the story behind the story
intrigued me. I discovered it wasn’t just about the narrative being
played out on the big screen, but how that narrative came to
fruition and the adversities and struggles that many independent
filmmakers go through to bring their stories to life. My hope is that
our audience connects to the films the way I did both on and off
the screen. Our visiting filmmakers tell us repeatedly how much
they love our Durango audience, so Thank You for making the
festival a unique and enjoyable experience for all.
Many thanks to all our supporters who help make this festival
happen. Without ALL of you, we wouldn’t have a film festival of
this magnitude in our home town.

This soulful documentary chronicles a uniquely musical passing
of the torch. It’s the story of first-generation blues performers
who made their way to Chicago from the Mississippi Delta, and
their ardent and unexpected followers consisting of young, white,
middle-class kids who followed the evocative music to smoky
clubs deep in Chicago’s ghettos. Passed down from musician
to musician, the Chicago blues transcended the color lines of
the 1960s as these young, white Chicago musicians apprenticed
themselves to legends such as Muddy Waters and Howlin’ Wolf.

This biographical portrait of Harris Glenn Milstead, a.k.a. Divine,
honors him in just the way he craved — as a serious artist and
immortal star. Divine’s story is told from his early days as a misfit
youth in Baltimore through his rise to infamy as a cult superstar.
Like the characters he portrayed in films, Divine was the ultimate
outsider. He transformed himself from a bullied schoolyard fat
kid to a larger-than-life personality as his alter-ego Divine. With
an in-your-face style, he blurred the line between performer and
personality.
