FENCE WIRES
FENCING
GUIDE
We don’t sell direct to consumers or contractors, but we still give
them lots of advice about fencing. We’ll tell you what we tell
them: Do it once. Do it right. Fencing is an important investment
– a way to keep livestock in, predators out, protection at a
maximum and trespass at a minimum. It’s also a time-consuming
and labor-intensive job. Do that job well, with well-chosen
materials, and you’ll only have to do it once in a generation.
Maybe even once every half-century.

FENCE WIRES
FENCE WIRES
Agricultural fencing is made of either low carbon or high tensile wire. It is our job to make sure you
know the difference when selecting fence for your next project, as it can help you save time and
money on labor and materials.
SASCO highly recommends using high tensile wire products. The result will be a stronger, longer
lasting and cost effective alternative to low carbon wire.
High Tensile
High tensile fencing is made from high carbon steel with a carbon content of .28 percent. High
carbon wire will stretch 3 percent before breaking and will not sag as much as low carbon wire.
If installed properly, high carbon wire provides a maintenance-free fence requiring no additional
re-stretching. Because high tensile fence has a higher breaking strength, your project will require
fewer posts, spaced at greater distances, again helping you save money.
Low Carbon
Traditional fencing is made of low carbon steel with a maximum carbon content of .10 percent. Low
carbon wire is easy to work with and fairly forgiving as it will stretch 11 percent to 14 percent before
breaking. It is, however, prone to sagging, stretching and elongation over time.

FENCE COATINGS
FENCE COATINGS
Selecting a wire with the proper coating is essential to protecting your fence from harsh
environmental elements including humidity, sand, soil chemicals, fertilizer, salt, pollution
and acid rain.
Commercial wire has no standard minimum coating and is not recognized by ASTM1. The
galvanization will last approximately three months to one year before signs of rust begin to appear.
Class 1 galvanization is the most economical protective coating used on standard fence wire.
It is considered a basic coating and will last two to 11 years in non-coastal climates.
Class 3 galvanization is the standard on products including Cattleman®, Gaucho®, Solidlock® and
King Ranch®. It is approximately 2.5 times thicker than the standard Class 1 coating and can be
expected to last 13 to 30 years before rust.
Zinc Aluminum (ZA) is a technology developed and produced exclusively by Bekaert.
This Class 20 coating lasts three times longer than Class 1.
50-Year Fence is galvanized by a state-of-the-art, advanced coating technology. This
Zinc Aluminum hybrid base coat extends the life of StaTite50® to more than twice the life
of Class 3 galvanized wire and seven times longer than Class 1.

KNOW YOUR KNOTS
Hinge Joint
The hinge joint is found on both low carbon and high tensile
products. This is the most common knot in agricultural fencing.
The knot is formed by wrapping the vertical stay wire pieces
around the line wire at each intersection. This design can
also absorb animal impact without damage and is the most
economical knot choice available.
“S” Knot
The “S” knot design uses a separate piece of wire that attaches
the line wire to the solid stay wire assuring maximum strength
and prevents the fence from buckling or sagging. This design is
smooth to the touch so you won’t have to worry about injuries to
your animals. The knot’s strength holds up to even the strongest
animal or weather impact while maintaining flexibility.
Fixed Knot
Found on The 50-Year Fence and Solidlock® products, this design
is top of the line. The fixed knot utilizes solid vertical stay wires,
which increase the vertical strength of the fence and allow for
increased post spacing. The knot is a separate piece of wire tightly
wrapped around the line wire and stay wire. Fixed knot fence is
very resistant to animal damage.

FIXED KNOT
There are two high-quality fixed knot fence options suitable for virtually any application on the
farm or ranch. The 50-Year Fence and Solidlock® products are both manufactured in the United
States by Bekaert and are available in a variety of sizes and configurations. The two products are
identical in their fixed knot design. They are considered top-of-the-line as the fixed knot utilizes
a separate piece of wire tightly wrapped around the line wire and stay wire, which increases the
vertical strength of the fence and allows for increased post spacing, making it very resistant to
animal damage.

SOLIDLOCK®
Solidlock by Bekaert combines a fixed knot design with high tensile, 12.5 gauge wire, making it
one of the strongest woven wire fences on the market today. The design locks the line and stay
wire together, giving you maximum strength to withstand heavy pressure.
Solidlock is available in sizes ranging from 42” to 120” tall. We have larger, staggered openings
or smaller 3”x 3” openings for horse applications. Solidlock fences are all made with Class 3
galvanized finish for a longer lasting life.

FIELD FENCE
San Antonio Steel Company offers a variety of woven wire field fences with a hinge joint wrap.
Both low carbon and high tensile field fences are offered in a wide variety of heights and styles
featuring graduated spacing that starts with narrow openings at the bottom which prevents the
entry of small animals.
The hinge joint is found on both low carbon and high tensile products. This is the most common
knot in agricultural fencing. The hinge joint is formed by wrapping the vertical stay wire pieces
around the line wire at each intersection. This design can also absorb animal impact without
damage and is the most economical knot choice available.
HIGH TENSILE FIELD FENCE
High tensile field fence combines the familiar hinge joint knot with high tensile steel, making it
stronger than traditional, low carbon field fence. Our high tensile field fence products are available
in 12.5g and 14g, Class 3 galvanized for a longer life. The 14g high tensile field fence has a 12.5g
top and bottom wire and is just as strong as a 12.5g low carbon field fence. The 12.5g high tensile
field fence has a 10.5g top and bottom wire and is stronger than 11g low carbon field fence. Both
of these high tensile field fence options are more cost effective than using traditional low carbon
field fence.

Low carbon field fence is made from steel rod with a carbon content of approximately 0.10 percent,
making it fairly forgiving and easy to work with. Because of its elasticity, it is prone to elongation
over time and is not as strong as high tensile wire. Our low carbon field fence products are
available in Commercial, Class 1 and Class 3 galvanized and utilize a woven wire design with a
hinge joint knot. Low carbon field fence is available in a variety of sizes and configurations from
Texas Classic®, Bekaert, Keystone, Deacero and Oklahoma Steel.

Sheep and Goat Fence is typically designed with a 4”x4” square opening from top to bottom for
effective containment of livestock and exclusion of predators.
Our sheep and goat fence products feature a solid vertical stay wire locked to the horizontal wire
with an “S” knot.

For years, barbed wire has been the wire of choice for farmers and ranchers because it is extremely
economical and is easily installed on any surface. It is typically used for cattle and bison, but is
adaptable for a number of fencing needs.
Barbed wire consists of two wire strands twisted together with either two or four point barbs placed
at predetermined distances. The standard barb spacing is 5 inches; however, we recommend three
inch barb spacing for areas where high animal traffic, predator risks, or security are concerns.
We offer barbed wire in a variety of strengths, coatings and styles from high-quality manufacturers
including Texas Classic®, Bekaert, Oklahoma Steel, Keystone and Deacero.
Low Carbon Barbed Wire
Low carbon wire is made from steel rod with an approximate carbon content of .10 percent. While
low carbon barbed wire can be easily manipulated and has been considered the standard for years,
it is prone to elongation, meaning it will sag or stretch over time.
Low carbon barbed wire is designed with a continuous twist unlike the reverse twist design found
in high tensile barbed wire products. Low carbon barbed wire is available in Commercial, Class 1
and Class 3 coatings.

low carbon and Gaucho 15.5g High Tensile Barbed Wire. With Cattleman 14g Barbed Wire, you

Consider using Gaucho 15.5g Barbed Wire for your next project if you’re looking for a cost
competitive barbed wire that is as strong as 12.5 gauge low carbon barbed wire but will last longer,
requiring little to no maintenance. Gaucho Barbed Wire is made of high tensile wire which means
even though the wire is smaller in diameter, it still maintains the same strength as conventional low
carbon barbed wire products.
All Gaucho Barbed Wire products are manufactured by Bekaert. Gaucho is Class 3 galvanized
which means it is proven to last two to three times longer than Class 1 and meets or
exceeds ASTM A-121.

The horse fence wire configuration is designed to prevent horses, cows and other hoofed animals
from stepping through the wire. A tight 2”x 4” wire spacing is used to ensure the safety of the
animal by preventing injuries and protecting against predators.
The “S” knot design uses a separate piece of wire that attaches the line wire to the solid stay
wire assuring maximum strength and prevents the fence from buckling or sagging. This design is
smooth to the touch so you won’t have to worry about injuries to your animals. The knot’s strength
holds up to even the strongest impact while maintaining flexibility.

San Antonio Steel Company carries a variety of American-made and imported studded t-posts.
CMC Southern Post and W. Silver provide us with t-posts made from high-strength steel and
coated with green or orange high-gloss, lead-free baked enamel paint. Painted t-posts are an
economical alternative to galvanized t-posts in less-corrosive environments and are ideal for
smooth, barbed wire, or field fence.
The t-posts range in theoretical weight from .95 to 1.50 pounds per foot and have distinctive white
and silver reflective tips. These posts feature a 3-studded rivet anchor plate.
Our posts are sold in bundles of 200 and come with Class 1 galvanized steel clips to swiftly attach
fence wire to the metal posts. We recommend the use of galvanized t-posts and Class 3 clips for all
Class 3, ZA and 50-Year Fence projects.
