Doyle Lawson
and Quicksilver
This year the Festival is honoured to welcome Doyle Lawson
& Quicksilver to our stage. Doyle, an accomplished mandolin
player, vocalist, and leader of this six man group is an
inductee into the International Bluegrass Music Hall of
Fame. Doyle and the band are legendary for their gospel and
bluegrass arrangements and are a sure bet to set the tone for
a great festival.
With nearly 40 albums to their credit, Doyle Lawson &
Quicksilver have multiple Grammy, Dove, ICM, IBMA and
SPBGMA Award nominations, and are 7-time winners of
IBMA’s Vocal Group of the Year. Lawson is reigning SPBGMA
Mandolin Player of the Year, and Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver
are the reigning Inspirational Country Music Association
(ICM) Vocal Group of the Year, crowned in October 2012 at
Nashville’s Schermerhorn Symphony Center, on the heels of
Lawson’s induction into the International Bluegrass Music
Hall of Fame in 2012.
Growing up , Doyle Lawson listened to all the stars on the
Opry, particularly Bill Monroe and His Blue Grass Boys. He
decided early on that he wanted to play that kind of music.
Doyle’s father, mother, and sister all sang gospel music when
he was young. They were members of trios and quartets that
sang a cappella music in churches and at revivals, and such.
No doubt, that was where He acquired his love of quartet
music.
Wishing you
a successful Festival!
In April 1979, Doyle Lawson formed a group that was first
named Doyle Lawson & Foxfire but soon changed to Doyle
Lawson & Quicksilver. They were looking for “their sound”
and that first group tried many different types of songs. The
makeup of the band has changed many times over the last 27
years. But finally their passion and their beliefs in the Lord
directed them to the music that they would record and that
would bring them the success they have had over the years.
Gospel Music is in their heart and soul and this shows every
time that Doyle Lawson and Quicksilver hits the stage. If you
want to listen to an uplifting musical sets, make sure that are
up and down at the stage on Saturday and Sunday to listen
to Doyle Lawson and Quicksilver at this year’s Tottenham
Bluegrass Festival.

From his first piano lessons from his mom to when his father
handed him a mandolin and showed him some chords, Ray
has continued his musical education learning old-time and
bluegrass music, becoming one of Canada’s top fiddle and
mandolin artists. Ray has teamed up with Gaspé native Frank
Doody one of the best banjo players you will find anywhere.
Frank Dooby lets his outgoing personality come through in
his song writing and in his voice as he entertains the fans.
Rounding out this group is a talented guitarist and mandolin
player, Richard Bourque, who will also be lending his vocals
throughout the set.
Ray Legere was the winner at the 1996 and 2003 East Coast
Music Awards of the ‘Bluegrass Artist of the Year’ award.
Legere has accompanied recording artists such as Rita McNeil,
The Rankins, John McDermott, Alison Brown and has played
on many great world stages like the Grand Old Opry and
Carnegie Hall. .
During his travels into the States Ray had the chance to
meet and perform with a lot of his musical heroes, most
memorably–Tony Rice, who was and still is, his mentor for
the sound, tone and timing he strives for when he plays.
Ray Legere’s first love is bluegrass music and the friendly
atmosphere of the Bluegrass Festivals gives him the avenue
to embrace this passion.

Little Roy
& Lizzy Show
The Little Roy and Lizzy Show is a show that you will not want to
miss this year at the Tottenham Bluegrass Festival. Little Roy Lewis
and Lizzy Long, both multi- instrumentalists, bring us a fast paced,
fast pickin’, highly entertaining show from the moment they step
onto the stage until they make their way off.
Having roots in the heart of the south, Elizabeth Long, or Lizzy as
her friends and fans know her, was born on a farm in Lincolnton,
Georgia. She began her music accomplishment at an early age.
While starting out on the piano, Lizzy soon took up the fiddle,
guitar, autoharp, bass, banjo, and mandolin, and has become an
accomplished musician, alternating between these instruments as
part of her entertainment repertoire. She has played with great
acts such as Mac Wiseman, Jim and Jesse, The Lewis Family, and
Earl Scruggs. Continuing her quest for success, Lizzy has paired
up with Little Roy Lewis from the legendary Lewis Family. Her
extraordinary voice shimmers with strains of America’s musical
roots. Lizzy has won “Bluegrass Song of the Year” for a song she
wrote called “Mountain Top” and a duet with Ty Herndon called
“When We Fly”. She is one of the youngest fiddlers to be inducted
into “America’s Old Time Fiddler’s Country Hall of Fame” in LeMars,
IA. Little Roy summed it up the best, “pull a plank off the wall and
she’ll play it!”
Rhyme ‘N’ Reason
Friends; Doug Moerschfelder, and Stefan Van Holten, have found
the right ingredients with Randy Brethour and Joe Rohrer, to
create a diverse bluegrass band, with solid traditional and gospel
roots. Doug’s soulful voice is sure to please bluegrass crowds,
while Stefan’s banjo delivers the drive , Randy’s mandolin cuts
through with sweet melodies, and Joe’s bass (Sara) playing adds a
solid heartbeat to the group.
Together they found their passion in the traditional bluegrass but
at times they try out different tunes such as an old country song
or maybe a good old rock and roll tune from the sixties and early
seventies.
They are looking forward to seeing old friends and meeting new
people at the festival and cannot wait to hit the stage and start
playing some good ole traditional bluegrass music.
Little Roy is awfully hard to overlook. He makes sure that no one
in the audience gets bored at any time. Little Roy has won awards
as Entertainer as well as for his banjo playing. Little Roy learned to
play banjo when he was only six years old, and won a local talent
contest for his playing when he was eight. Little Roy’s favourite
banjo players are Don Reno and Earl Scruggs. USA Today called
Little Roy ‘a banjo master, truly a picker’s picker’. Little Roy can also
be found playing the guitar and autoharp. In fact, the song ‘Good
Time Get-Together’ was written to highlight his instrumental skills.
Little Roy is multi-talented - he sings, plays many instruments,
tells stories, and acts. When you see this Duo, you are sure to
notice Little Roy, and he’ll make you smile.

Kitchener native, Glen George plays acoustic upright bass for
the Barn Katz. Back through the 90’s with Clean Sweep, he
was twice nominated as Bass Player Of The Year. Glenn’s bass
playing can be described as solid and tasty; delivering those
fat bottom notes and luscious lines at just the right time.
We’re sure you’ll enjoy the energy and enthusiasm in addition
to the big sound, Glenn brings to the Barn Katz!
Tim McDonald brings a unique banjo style that adds a percussive drive to the Barn Katz distinctive material. He also
contributes vocally with a bass voice that has been polished
with years of bluegrass gospel music. A writer as well, Tim
contributes his ideas in the open forum that is The Barn Katz.
One day he would like to own a monkey.
The Barn Katz
The Barn Katz Band is a dynamic fun filled acoustic group
that brings out the best in country and blue grass music. This
four piece band has a sound and harmony that is guaranteed
to get your feet tappin’ and your hands clappin’
The Barn Katz started playing together back in 2009 when
friends got together and started playing and sharing their
musical talents. They soon realized that they had a real connection and a sound that everyone loved so the Barn Katz
Group was formed.

The group consists of Joe Clark, who started on the Mandolin
at age 8. By age 11 he performed in front of a full house with
Bill Monroe “The Father of Bluegrass Music;” at age 14 he
recorded with Kenny Baker and Josh Graves and then another
record with Kenny and Josh at age 16. By the age of 18 he
was recording steadily and working on the road. At age 20 he
filled in on several occasions with Bill Monroe and his Bluegrass Boys as upright bass player. At age 22 Joe played on the
nationally acclaimed PBS series 25th Anniversary Austin City
Limits with Larry Sparks, Ricky Skaggs, and Ralph Stanley.
Joe is super excited to be part of the Barn Katz. “This group
has been a long time in the making and every member has
signed a lifetime agreement in BLOOD not to ever leave. So
we are gonna entertain as many people as we possibly can
and hope to meet and greet with every single one of you!”
Suzie Sweetman brings outstanding original material, a powerful and emotional vocal ability, and an effervescent stage
presence that can turn any frown upside down. To Suzie it
is “all about the love” and this becomes very apparent when
you see her on stage. She always has a great time performing and rehearsing but the underlying thought process that
drives her is her desire to entertain and the uncanny ability to
pick material, arrange it and present it, in a way that always
leaves her audiences smiling. Suzie wants to be a Sushi Chef
when she grows up

“Hands On”
Workshops in the Orchard
Saturday, June 20
Join us in the orchard by the park entrance on Saturday for
a “hands on” approach to workshops. Bring your instruments and your questions for our instructors.
10:00am – Bass – Sheldon Speedie
Sheldon is one of the most tasteful bass players on the Canadian Bluegrass circuit. Like the rest of his band mates, he’s
got a long family history in music. Before joining Traditionally
Wound, Sheldon played in the well known group Northbound
in the late 1990’s, early 2000’s. Northbound was fortunate
enough to represent Canada at the 2002 IBMA’s in Louisville,
KY. An original member of Traditionally Wound, Sheldon’s feel
for “how it should be done” is a integral part to Traditionally
Wound’s overall sound. Sheldon is very much looking forward
to the 2015 festival season with the new look and feel. Come
on out to the Bass Workshop and pick Sheldon’s brain about
what it takes to keep the Instrumental Group of the Year
together.
11:00am – Mandolin –Emory Lester
Emory’s landmark recording projects have placed him
among the elite mandolinists of our time. His most recent
solo CD ‘At Dusk’ showcases Emory’s multi-instrumentalist
musical creativity and skills. As well as his own ‘Emory
Lester Set’, he currently performs with his partner Jill
Jones in the new ‘Emory Lester & Jill Jones Band’. Emory
is a world-renowned master instructor of the mandolin,
guitar and banjo, having amassed 37 years, teaching at
prestigious instructional events including David Grisman &
Mike Marshall’s Mandolin Symposium, the Steve Kaufman
Acoustic Kamp, the Swannanoah Gathering, the Goderich
Celtic College, the Acoustic Alaska Guitar Camp, and
the Transatlantic Bluegrass School in Wales. Emory also
conducts an on-line lesson program.
12:00pm –Banjo – Ken Groomes
Ken started playing banjo when he was 11. His pure,
traditional styles stay true to the legends that he admires.
Ken’s award recognitions include Canadian champion in
’76 and ’78, 2nd in the World Class in ’76 in Carlisle and
five time Banjo Player of the Year at the Central Canadian
Bluegrass Awards. A proud member of Traditionally Wound
he is excited for their new sound.
1:00pm – Fiddle – Tyler Beckett
Tyler’s started playing fiddle at the early age of three
and he continues to play regularly with The Beckett Family
Band. Tyler won Fiddle Player of the Year at the Central
Canadian Bluegrass Awards in 2008 and in 2009. After a
three year stint with the renowned American bluegrass
band The Chapmans, Tyler has returned home to the
Owen Sound area. Traditionally Wound is proud to have
Tyler back with the band as he brings with him all the
elements of tradition, family and fun that helps to make
the Traditionally Wound experience genuine and unique.
Ask Tyler some questions, hear him play some favourites or
just come for a visit.
17
2:00pm – Guitar – John McDonald
John McDonald has bluegrass music in his blood. John was a
founding member of the vocal giants of the 1980s – McDonald
Bluegrass. McDonald Bluegrass have a wall of awards from the
Central Canadian Bluegrass Awards including: Instrumental
Group of the Year, two Recording of the Year awards, Five Vocal
Group of the Year awards and two Gospel Group of the Year
awards. John himself won Male Vocalist of the Year in ’89. More
recently John added his talents and played lead and rhythm
guitar, and was lead singer to the short run bluegrass band The
Roadmasters. His years of experience can easily be seen in his
solid lead and rhythm guitar playing.
3:00pm – Band Workshop – Traditionally
Wound Traditionally Wound was formed in 2007. The band has
a solid, unmistakable sound that fans appreciate as their Central
Canadian Bluegrass Awards indicate: Four time winners of Overall
Group of the Year, Five time winners of Instrumental Group of the
Year and Recording of the Year. They have promised themselves to
always stay true to ‘tradition’ while allowing the door to always
stay open to carefully selected original and new material. As it was
important from the start, an element of family continues to run
through the Traditionally Wound unique sound. Their comfortable
way of expressing their music and the open, obvious fun they
experience every time they play is what Traditionally Wound is all
about. The guys are ‘Wound’ up for the 2015 season with the new
look and sound and want their fans to be too. Come on out to the
Band Workshop and see the members of Traditionally Wound. They
are looking forward to seeing you.

bring a fresh new way of interpreting the genre to appeal
to the younger audience. They are inspired by all the people
that have surrounded them over the years (including grandparents) that nurture them and connected them with the love
of music.
Ducharme Family
Bluegrass
The Ducharme Family Bluegrass will be bringing their high
energetic performance to the Tottenham Bluegrass Stage this
year. This group can pull any music lover towards Bluegrass
and Gospel music with their versatility and talent. Music
has been in the Ducharme family for many generations, you
could say it runs through their blood. Their music is very
energetic. Appealing to all audiences and all ages, their style
and interpretation of Bluegrass has helped seduce many a
new Bluegrass fan. Introducing the tradition of Bluegrass
to the younger audience inspires them to be creative and to

Setting this group apart from any other is their knack for
integrating various styles and genres into their material. Being one of the very few fluently bilingual English and French
Bluegrass bands makes their product very rare and more in
demand. Based in the little town of River Valley in Northern
Ontario, father – Mike and his sons Mitch, Joey and Pat form
the band.
“Our musical influences are of the groups Lonesome River
Band, Blue Highway, Sierra Hull, Del McCoury Band, The Bluegrass Brothers, IIIrd Tyme Out, Dan Tyminski, Dailey & Vincent,
Michael Cleveland & Flamekeeper, Doyle Lawson... and many
more great Bluegrass artists. As for non-musical influence
would have to be our friends and family that support us with
what we do.
Hold on to your seats because we are going to provide you
with a high energetic experience that will make you want
to get up and start dancing. Providing you with exceptional
vocal harmonies and a variety of Traditional, Bluegrass and
Gospel music from different eras. You can expect to hear
some genre hopping somewhere in our set as well.”

Acoustical Strings
Tottenham Bluegrass Festival is honoured to welcome back
Acoustical Strings to the festival stage in 2015. Acoustical
Strings are a family band from Cannington, ON. The band has
it’s own unique blend of traditional bluegrass, gospel, and
classic county sounds. Influenced by such artists as Flatt &
Scrugs, Reno & Smiley, Mac Wiseman, Hank Snow and Larry
Sparks, they have created their own distinctive sound. With
the Dobro and Guitar as the primary instruments backed by a
solid bass, and tight 3 part family harmony. This sets the band
apart from other groups. If you enjoy the old style sounds,
you’ll enjoy Acoustical Strings, (Spence Family)
Acoustical Strings have won several Central Canadian Bluegrass Awards. Roger is a 5 times winner of Dobro Player Of
The Year, receiving his Honour Roll Inductee Award. Barry is
also a 5 time winner of Guitar Player Of The Year, receiving
his Honour Roll Inductee Award. Roger and Barry are the first
father-son duo to receive this honour. The band also won
Gospel Group Of The Year 4 times and has been continually
nominated for other awards.
For a band that consists of 3 members, the sound is solid and
complete. With their unique style and fan base support, you
would not be at all disappointed with them. Welcome back
Spence Family.

A newcomer to the local Bluegrass scene is the band Beeton
Creek Rising. The band brings a wealth of experience and
influences to the tradition of Bluegrass.
Doug Cornish was introduced to the Banjo by Poco and The

Flatt & Scruggs, Country Gazette, Seldom Scene and a love of
Traditional Bluegrass.

Bob Arbuckle is a veteran of Old Time Canadian Fiddle. At age
14, Bob was playing square dances and hasn’t stopped since.
In recent years as a member of Higher Ground he caught the
bluegrass bug.
As a teenager, Drew Elmer discovered bluegrass at the Tottenham Bluegrass Festival. At a local jam, someone asked Drew
to hold onto their Bass for a minute and he’s been pullin’ the
solid Bluegrass beat ever since.
Growing up, Sharon Niederhuber was heavily influenced by
her Dad’s prized vinyl collection of Kitty Wells, Hank Williams,
Dolly Parton and others. She emerged as a classic country
singer and solid rhythm Guitar player and brings that great
sound to traditional Bluegrass.
Jerry Switzer’s bluegrass influence was in 1974ish with a cassette of the FDR Boys, with ‘Fox on the Run’. The instruments
and the stacked voices hooked him. Jerry plays Guitar and
Resophonic Guitar and has added Mandolin to his arsenal.

Richard Dugal &
Clean Sweep
Clean Sweep has been on the Canadian Bluegrass scene with
various members throughout the years. The group today
incorporates both original and new band members. The band
is centered around the unique and powerful voice of the band
founder and leader Richard Dugal.
Known affectionately as “Dicky”, Richard Dugal, delivers
the music with a raw power and emotion that has been the
trademark sound of this group for years. Dickie is joined by
original members Norm Tellier on mandolin, Ron Beingessner
originally on banjo, and now dobro player. Both of these
musicians have honed their instrumental and singing skills
over the years as they traveled with other bands and now
have returned to Clean Sweep. Rounding out this talented
trio is Larry Jonson on banjo and the ever smiling Glenn
George on bass. Clean Sweep has never sounded better than
it does today. Come enjoy, listen and be entertained at this
year’s Tottenham Bluegrass Festival.

May 14, 2015
Thanks to the demands of print deadlines and such, I’m writing this note in the middle of May. My lilacs are just coming
out in bloom, and my tulips are just beginning to fade. I hope that as the Tottenham Bluegrass Festival opens it is blessed with
blue skies and warm breezes. On behalf of Folk Music Ontario, it is my honour and privilege to welcome you to this weekend of
fine music and to congratulate everyone who has helped make it possible.
Folk festivals shaped my life. Listening to guitarists like Leon Redbone and David Rea, and singers like Bessie Jones and
the Georgia Sea Island Singers, and bands like the Great Speckled Bird made me want to be a musician. Folk festivals just seemed
a lot more compelling than university, and the road looked more interesting than a career in law.
Whether you’re here as a fan, a performer, a volunteer, or a vendor, you’re a part of a wonderful community called folk
music. Here we can push our cares to the side for awhile and relax in the realm of imagination and creation. Buy some CDs, take
home some fine Ontario craftwork, collect some autographs, talk with the artists, invite one to come and do a house concert in
your living room. (Also, drink lots of water, and put your garbage in a proper receptacle.)
Folk Music Ontario is proud to support the growth and development of folk music in Ontario. I encourage you to check
out a few of the other great festivals across the province, each with its own special character and flavour.
It takes huge commitments of time, money, energy, and talent to pull a festival like this together. Congratulations once
again to all the volunteers and organizers and sponsors of Tottenham Bluegrass Festival and to all of you for being here to enjoy
it. Have a great weekend.
