Mel and Linda Vogt-National Family of the Year
Hi Everyone,
Can you believe November is already here?
This year has just flown by and although we
have done a lot of wonderful things, there is
so much more we wanted to do. One goal,
when we made Nebraska State Family of
the Year, was that we wanted to make the
effort to visit with each chapter in the state. It
is a long way across Nebraska but I am
happy to say we did meet that goal and we
also met and visited with some wonderful
people whom we may not have had the
opportunity to visit with otherwise. Much
thanks to each chapter for welcoming us.
When we became Region C Family of the
Year, we also set a goal to visit each state
with an active chapter by attending some
type of event. Although we have made
some headway on that goal, we continue to
work on it and will be contacting some of
you during the winter and spring. No
promises but we would love to accomplish
that goal as well.
As National Family of the Year, Mel and I
decided we couldn’t even dream of making it
to each state but don’t be surprised if some
of you find us on your doorstep or get a call
checking out an available date to show up.
Since last month, we made some chapter
dinner rides, not only with our Chapter Z, but

also with Chapters B and C. Mel and I,
along with other members of our chapter,
attended Chapter Y’s campout and met a
camping couple. As a result of such a good
time at the campout, we now have them as
new members to GWTA and Chapter Z.
Welcome, Diane and Dave Schroder, who I
think have a good idea of what we are all
about. It is great to meet new people and be
able to include them in our fun.
Take a look at this motorcycle.
Chapter Z member Gary Davis entered this
motorcycle in the show at Applefest in
Woodbine, IA and it took First Place for
Vintage-Pre 1986. It is just a bit different
than what we are riding nowadays isn’t it.
Gary says it is a 1948 Safticycle. He has
had it approximately 30 years and did some
restoration in 2006. He is really proud of
this bike but has allowed a few fellow
chapter members to ride it.

Well, as expected, we were real surprised at
roasting. We wish each and every one of
our GWTA Chapter Z Awards Banquet (and

Job Description:
1. ATTEND GOLD RUSH AND OPERATIONS MEETING.
2. MAIL OUT PRINTOUTS IN A TIMELY MANNER. These should be accompanied by
a letter keeping the State Directors informed of any National or Regional news that should be passed on.
3. WORK @ GOLD RUSH @ ASSIGNED TASKS. If your way is paid to this event be
prepared to work to serve the Membership.
4. PREPARE A FINANCIAL STATEMENT ONCE A YEAR FOR YOUR REGION AND
MAIL TO ALL STATE DIRECTORS IN YOUR REGION.

DIRECTORS AND STAFF. Use this as a tool to communicate directly with your
State Directors on how all can work together to improve the workings in
your Region. Should be centrally located and equally same distance for all to

everyone’s Association!!

ABOUT THINGS GOING ON IN YOUR REGION NOT JUST YOUR EXPERIENCES.
If you call your State Directors monthly you will have input for your article
to keep it informative and interesting.
12. ATTEND AS MANY AS POSSIBLE GWTA FUNCTIONS WITHIN YOUR REGION.

I am sitting at my desk trying to decide
what my topic for my article should be
this month. I live in Central California
about 12 miles inland from Santa Cruz.
The past few mornings it has been quite
chilly here in our neck of the woods.
Also when you go outside the air has a
definite smell of autumn. With the cold
and the possibility of some showers, I
am realizing that for many across the
Nation the riding season might be
coming to an end. We are fortunate
here in my area since we don’t get ice
and snow (most of the time) and while
we do get rain our riding season
continues through the winter.
If you are in one of those areas of the
Northern Hemisphere that cannot ride
all year and you end up storing your
bike make sure you are following all the
recommended procedures. I know of
people who have not done something’s

they should have and come Spring their
bike had problems. Different areas of
the country require different procedures
so make sure you find out what is
recommended in your area, so come
Spring you have no problems.
I would like to make a slight diversion
from Rider Safety at this point. Over
the last month or so there has been
very heavy weather in Colorado and the
surrounding areas. I have heard from a
couple of friends in the area and know
they are safe and did not get caught in
the floods. I would like to pass on my
good thoughts to any of our GWTA
Family who might have suffered any
problems from the storms and floods.

Yikes! Shrikes!
When last we left Dave, he had witnessed a
terrible crash which made him reconsider twowheeled motorcycling…
Once it became apparent that I could no longer
accept the risks inherent in motorcycling, I set out to
design a vehicle that would provide most of the
appeal of two wheels and a motor with a more
protective cage for the driver/passenger. It would be
street legal, light, small, with good performance and
excellent handling. The SCCA class H-Modified
sports racing car buddy Russ and I had built in ’65…

the concept:

…was a step towards what I wanted. It soon
became apparent that a three-wheeled layout had
the advantage of eliminating many costly, heavy, and
design-intensive elements (safety glass windshield,
wipers, defroster, bumpers etc.). Using a production
drivetrain and selected components would help also.
An aluminum monocoque structure always appealed
to me, and I laid out a 1F2R (one front wheel, two
rear) configuration using Honda Civic power.
An SAE Technical Paper followed, presented in ’83,
with Honda CX-500 power.

Calculations of CG (center of gravity) location and
overturning resistance led me to adopt a 2F1R
layout, and by ’80 I had the basics down:

650 Maxim drive package, at a total cost of $5,000.

The first week driving the Shrike from San Diego to
work in Temecula, I stopped for gas. An off-duty
CHP officer came by and we chatted for a while.
Two weeks later I was running late, doing 70+ (55
max at the time) when I noted a black and white
closing FAST one lane over. That’s it, I’m had. The
CHP car pulled along side and looked over at me.
The officer reached down for his mic, turned on the
outside speaker and said “Good morning, Dave.” He
had read the name on my helmet weeks before! I
gave a “Ya got me!” shrug. He said “You’re cool.”,
and went on ahead in search of bad guys. I
moderated my velocity after that.
During the years the Shrike was on the road without
bodywork I was occasionally stopped by the local
constabulary. Usually, they were merely curious and
wanted to check it out up close and make sure it was
legally registered.
On two occasions, one a
Riverside County Sherriff and the other a lady CHP
officer, the attitude was different. This was their
apparent thought process:
1. It has three wheels. Therefore
2. It’s unsafe.
3. It must be illegal.
4. Let’s get you off the road before you hurt
somebody.
On both occasions the officer spent at least 10
minutes trying to find out what it was that did not
conform to the California Vehicle Code and cite me.
Both conversations went something like this:
Officer: You realize Mr. Norton that this vehicle is
illegal.
Me: Oh? What is it that’s not legal, I’ll fix it right
away.
Officer: For one, it’s too low.
Me: The Vehicle Code says no portion of the vehicle
can be lower than the lowest point of the wheel rim,
which is 2-3/4”. Ground clearance is 3-1/2”.
Officer: Hmmm. The headlight is too high.

Me: Well, the Vehicle Code says a maximum of 54”.
Mine measures 52-3/4”, we can check it if you wish, I
have a tape measure.
Officer: But you can’t have the headlight behind the
front wheel like that.
Me: You do realize this is a motorcycle, and most
motorcycles do have the light behind the front wheel.
Officer: You don’t even have a real windshield or
wipers!
Me: Again, this is a motorcycle.
The conversations continued until the officer got
frustrated. The lady CHP officer turned on her heel,
stomped back to her cruiser, got in, slammed the
door and patched off leaving two long black lines
following her re-entry to the freeway. The County
Sherriff told me he’d check the book that night, find
out what it was that was not in conformance, and
that we would have this conversation again another
day. We never did. The kicker to all this was that I
knew something they didn’t. Neither one noticed the
lack of front fenders, which are required! To this day
the Shrike remains sans front fenders.
There was a related incident many years later after
our move to Oregon. A friendly local lady police
officer stopped me one day. Her first remark was
“You know you need front fenders on this.” I figured
the jig was up, now I’d finally have to add some
properly engineered fenders. After checking my
paperwork she asked if she could take a photo of the
Shrike to put up “at work” so the other officers were
aware of the car. Sure. She did, and then I asked
her if she would mind taking a photo with my camera
of the Shrike with her cruiser behind, red lights
flashing. She happily took my picture, returned my
camera, said “Have a nice day” and returned to her
duties.
But I’m getting way ahead of the story…

Top 10 fun things to do in nearby Boyne City during
Gold Rush
Boyne City is a charming little town of 3,700
people on beautiful Lake Charlevoix, just six miles
west of Boyne Mountain on Highway M-75. It's well
worth a visit. Boyne City is well known for its
restaurants, ice cream shops, shopping, galleries
and sunsets over the lake. We asked the Boyne Area
Chamber of Commerce to give us their “Top 10 fun
things to do,” and here's their list:

Free concerts at our downtown park at 6:30
every Wednesday evening and music all over
downtown every Friday evening for Stroll the
Streets.
7) Take a hike or a swim - Avalanche Mountain
is a 320-acre park with gentle trails or 450
steps to a spectacular view and observation
deck at the top. Also take a swim or a hike at
Young State Park – two miles east, or Whiting
Park, 5 miles away. We also have Peninsula
Beach right in town.

Wine & dine – have a great meal at one of our
many restaurants – American, Latin, European
(on the lakefront), Chinese, pizza, 50’s theme,
and good old “mom & pop.”
2)
Have an ice cream cone at one of our three
ice cream shops or a 50’s-theme burger shop.
3)
Shop ‘til you drop’ at one of our unique
shops: art galleries, boutiques, T-shirt shops,
auto parts stores, Farmers Market/Craft Show,
full-service supermarket/ pharmacy, Dollar
Store, video store, bowling alley, hair and nail
salons, and gas stations. There is plenty of free
parking and no meters.
Rent a boat – providers will bring will a boat or
a Jet Ski to any area lake. The local
kayak/canoe rental shop will take you to and
from the Boyne River.
Go fishin’ – right off the dock or at the mouth
of the Boyne River in the center of town. Two
hardware stores have gear, bait and licenses.
