KEHILATH ISRAEL`S - Kehilath Israel Synagogue
KEHILATH ISRAEL’S Vol. 47, Issue 6/7 swwoc June-July, 2011 The word “synagogue” in Hebrew has three definitions. It is a “house of prayer,” a “house of study,” and a “house of gathering.” Historically the synagogue was created around the time of the destruction of the Second Temple 2,000 years ago in Jerusalem when it was obvious that a third Temple would not be rebuilt in at least the foreseeable future. Of these three definitions of a synagogue, the first, “house of prayer,” is the most important. No matter how exciting a synagogue’s programming and social action agenda or any other issue can be, its offering of public prayer services is, after all, what houses of worship are all about. K.I. has always prided itself that we never miss a minyan, and we do not. This is a public service that we provide for the entire community. Members of other congregations as well as our own come to K.I. for yahrzeit and other occasions, knowing that regardless of the weather or the hour we will have a reliable minyan. This past winter saw numerous blizzards where no one in the community made minyan. Several of our sister congregations actually cancelled services. We never missed once! After all this bragging, I have to admit that the minyan has been very challenged over the last couple of months at K.I. There is good reason for the problem, but it needs to be solved! Six or eight of our regulars, most of whom came morning and evening, have either passed on or are too old or ill to attend. That number makes a tremendous difference in a small group creating the minyan. Kehilath Israel Synagogue is not just a congregation; it is a family. Generally we do whatever we do fairly well, and we are proud of it and have been for over 100 years. Come help our family! What are you doing at 6:30 in the morning?! Maybe sleeping, maybe hitting the snooze button for an extra time, continued on page 6 WHAT’S INSIDE Shabbat Schedule......................................................................... 2 Cantor Shron’s Message.............................................................. 2 Anniversaries................................................................................ 4 Birthdays....................................................................................4,5 Memorial Tablets...................................................................... 8,9 Donations................................................................................10,11 June Calendar.............................................................................13 July Calendar..............................................................................14 Iyar-Sivan-Tammuz 5771 Steve Osman is taking a hiatus from his column this month and instead is introducing Dr. Michael Sokol and Rachel Macek, two of the vice presidents to the congregation. Hello. My name is Michael Sokol and I am proudly serving my third administration at K.I. Synagogue with a portfolio that includes ritual matters, adult education, and most recently membership. My wife Shari, and three children, Alex, Felicia, and Amanda have been members of our wonderful synagogue for approximately 14 years. While my mother likes to tell me I was found in a cabbage patch, I can tell you I was raised in an extended family living situation. I grew up in a duplex in Fairlawn, Ohio with my mother, father, and me downstairs and my aunt, grandfather, and cousin upstairs. The Jewish community was significantly smaller in Akron than in Kansas City, and I was only one of 10 Jewish students in a class of 350 graduates from my public high school. Nevertheless, I had another extended family in Akron, and that included all the members of Beth El Synagogue, where we went as a family nearly every Shabbat and holiday and where I went to Hebrew school. I experienced another extended Jewish family at the Akron Jewish Community Center, where I played tennis and basketball (not too successfully, I might add), swam, and worked as a camp counselor. My grandfather was one of the founding members of the Akron Jewish Community Center and my aunt was a former president there. My parents, aunt, and grandfather all served various committee roles at Beth El Synagogue and my great-uncle was a former president there. My mother, who is now widowed, has an active social life because of friends she and my father made through chavurot at our synagogue in Akron, Ohio. These are the same chavurot that my co-officer David Magariel spoke of in his Focal Point column most recently. Chavurot can help individuals and families build friendships that can last a lifetime. All you have to do is mention to any of your officers that you have a core group who might make up a chavurah and we will help you initiate a K.I. chavurah group. K.I. actually affords you other ways of adding to your family and building friendships. Answer your curiosity (or your “doubting self”) and participate in one of the many educational programs given by our clergy, staff, or visiting faculty. Step out of your comfort zone and join or lead a part of a service at K.I. I know you will be pleasantly surprised, not only at yourself, but also at the friendships you are likely to develop continued on page 6 SHABBAT SERVICES FRIDAY, JUNE 3 Candlelighting*......................8:22 P.M. They call an exterminator, but to no avail. Finally, the Rabbi came up with a solution. He gave them all a Bar/Bat Mitzvah and they were never seen of again. In Hebrew, a synagogue is called a beit k’nesset, or house of assembly. Although the prayer service is the main activity, the real purpose of a shul is to bond the Jewish community together. If you think about years past, all socializing took place in shul. There were dinners, youth activities, dances, men’s club, sisterhood, holiday celebrations, adult/youth education, weddings and b’nai mitzvah, the list goes on and on. Most friendships revolved around the shul, most people met their future spouse at a shul and most people strengthened their commitment to Judaism via the shul. Unfortunately, in so many synagogues throughout the country, Bar/Bat Mitzvah is the conclusion of a child’s Jewish education and exposure to our heritage. Yes, we light a menorah on Chanukah, and we sit around the Seder table on Pesach, but what do our children really know about living a Jewish life. What real value of Judaism have we instilled in our children? Have we demonstrated anything positive about being Jewish, or have we only conveyed the prohibitions of Judaism. Do our children mostly socialize with Jewish kids or are most of their friends gentiles? And finally, what do our children see us doing to enhance our relationship with G-d? As a Jewish community, we need to get “back to the future!” When I first arrived at K.I. fourteen years ago, our shul was bustling with people and activities. We had 250-275 people attending Shabbat services on a regular basis; we had a nursery school of 80-100 children and had 65 children in our religious school. I’m aware that the demographic of the community has changed over the years, however, as a synagogue; we need to get back to basics. Attending services on a regular basis, religious school training for our children, adult education classes and just being involved must become a top priority in our families’ lives to insure the future of K.I. 2 continued on page 5 www.kisyn.org SECOND BAR MITZVAH SEYMOUR KRINSKY SATURDAY, JUNE 18 The Congregation is invited to attend Seymour Krinsky's second Bar Mitzvah on Shabbat morning, the 18th of June, 2011 at Kehilath Israel. Kiddush luncheon to follow services. WHY IS IT CUSTOMARY TO EAT DAIRY ON SHAVUOT? It has become customary on Shavuot to eat at least one dairy meal during the holiday. Some see this as symbolizing “a land flowing with milk and honey.” Others point out that the very same verses that speak of bringing “the choicest first fruits of the land unto the house of the Lord your G-d” in celebration of Shavuot also stress that “You must not boil a kid in its mother’s milk.” (Ex. 23:19, 34:26.) On the basis of the latter part of these verses, the Oral Torah based its prohibition of eating meat and milk together. Hence, a separate dairy meal is deliberately eaten to emphasize the authenticity of the Oral Torah. Tisha B’Av (the ninth day of the Jewish month of Av) is a day of mourning during which Jews fast and bewail the destruction of the Temple and Jerusalem. Along with Yom Kippur, it is the only full day fast on our calendar. This fact alone should impress upon us the importance that is placed on the observance of this day for all Jews. The preceding period, known as the “three weeks” that began with the Fast of Tammuz on Tuesday, July 19, is considered to be the saddest time in the Jewish calendar when all evidence of joy disappears until the conclusion of Tisha B’Av. Since World War II, many Jews have chosen Tisha B’Av as the day to commemorate the (Yahrzeit) loss of those family members who were killed by the Nazis and their associates on dates that are unknown. The Talmud states that G-d decreed this particular day as a day of woe and misfortune in the very beginning of Jewish history. According to this interpretation, the ninth of Av was the day when the Jews in the desert of Sinai bewailed their lot when the spies brought back bad tidings from Canaan (Parshat Shelach). So G-d declared: “You cried without cause; I will, therefore, make this an eternal day of mourning for you.” And it was then that the decree was ordered for the destruction of the Temple, and the scattering of the Jews amongst the peoples of the earth. SAVE THE DATE! Rabbi Herbert Mandl will be teaching a one time class on Monday evening, August 1 at 7:00 p.m. in the Spitcaufsky Library entitled “Tish B’Av--Feast or Fast.” June-July 2011/Iyar-Sivan-Tammuz 5771 www.kisyn.org 3 HAPPY ANNIVERSARY JUNE 1 Natalie & Dr. Donald Cohen (36) Susan & Robert Katz (19) 3 Phyllis & Himie Wainstock (58) 16 Ruth & Allan Bell (48) 5 Eleanor & Alexander Belingloph (56) Eunice & Sheldon Snitz (48) Irene & Ben Gasser (23) 17 Deanna & Stanley Martasin (49) Batsheva Glatt & Mitchell Trope (6) 18 Susan & Bruce Winston (22) Deborah Healy & Koleman Strumpf (6) Arlene & Michael Abrams (11) 6 Judith & David Weinstein (29) 19 Marcia & Arnold Tropp (39) Bonita & Anton Krutz (12) 21 Rosalyn & Howard Jacobson (47) 7 Helen & Selwyn Luben (58) Rachel & Josh Tucker (3) Dorothy & Herman Mondschein (63) 23 Dorothy & Robert Blonsky (76) Ruth & Ben-Zion Rosenblum (46) Milly & Isadore Zeff (54) Faigel & Bruce Singer (24) 24 Carole & Joseph Schifman (32) Gloria & Neil Planzer (5) 25 Dr. Lisa & Dr. Sander Glatt (37) 9 Carol & Arnold Caviar (43) Diane & Abraham Rozenberg (39) Rose Lee & Eugene Weisberger (48) Ashley & Daniel Fox (7) 10 Mindy & David Wajcman (32) 27 Karen & James Lesky (40) Felicia & Seymour Weiner (55) 28 Svetlana & Dmitry Kapustin (26) Ruth & William Nowack (32) Lois & Marcus Levitch (52) 11 Olga & Vladimir Koz (16) Susan & Alex Horowitz (13) 13 Jessica & Adam Rich (7) 14 Patsy & Arnold Probin (40) 1 2 3 5 8 9 10 13 14 17 22 24 28 31 JULY Idie & Herbert Parmet (42) Marsha & Seymour Krinsky (13) Adelle & Ralph Matzdorff (20) Sharon & Gary Levin (45) Amy & Edward Tranin (24) Ileen & Dr. Ira Neufeld (32) Clarice & Henry Epstein (44) Nancy & Brian Bucksner (6) Deborah & Michael Stone (8) Lyubov & Moysey Kapustin (57) Fannie & Jack Krashin (60) Doris & David Rubin (66) Debby & William Schlozman (28) Sandra & Marvin Romer (20) Melissa & Jeffrey Goldenberg (15) Sharon & Geoffrey Friedman (34) CONGREGANTS’ JUNE & JULY BIRTHDAYS We want to wish a Happy Birthday to all of the following congregants who are celebrating their birthdays: JUNE: C. Let us know the school from which your child graduated and degree earned. You can email the information to [email protected] vcr vsu, nity. Our parents and grandparents did their share in the process, and now we need to take hold of our responsibility in continuing the chain. In the fall, I will be initiating several new programs aimed at increasing involvement at services. I will be starting a trope class for men and women interested in chanting Torah and/or Haftarah. For women who never had a Bat Mitzvah ceremony, I will be starting an Adult Bat Mitzvah class that will culminate with a Shabbat morning ceremony. For men who have never had the opportunity to chant their Bat Mitzvah haftarah since they were 13, why wait until you are 83 to have a second Bar Mitzvah? I will help you re-learn your haftarah so you can celebrate your 2nd Bar Mitzvah now. For those in the congregation who want to learn how to lead services, whether weekday or Shabbat, I will work with you. Imagine the impact on your children and/or grandchildren when they see you taking a leadership role in shul. Please contact me if you would like to participate in any of the above programs. Let us work together to infuse our lives with yiddishkite and turn our shul, our homes and our families into B’nai Yisrael – the children of Israel. Am Yisrael Chai! Rabbi Jeffrey A. Undoubtedly, you will want to share your new found enthusiasm and confidence with others and bring them to K.I. Synagogue. You are our best ambassador to show others the spiritual, educational, and social experience that can be obtained at our synagogue. My wish for our extended K.I. family is that there remain a steady flow of members, families of members, friends of members, and visitors coming through the doors to experience what you and your extended K.I. family have to offer. You are the best candidate to make that happen. Dr. Michael Sokol or maybe working out at the JCC? At 7:00 a.m. your fellow congregants who are wanting to say Kaddish for a parent, as many of you have done, need that extra bit of help that you can provide even if it just once a month. Others provided that service for many of you who have said Kaddish over the years. Let us all rally around the cause and help those who are saying Kaddish now by giving a day a week of committing yourself to attending a service, or even just a service a month. With the summer months coming and vacations of both staff and congregants, the situation could worsen. We will not miss a minyan. However, we really need to improve in this area. In the next week or two we will be sending out a sign-up sheet to the congregation. If you can help by plugging your name into a specific spot on our chart for the months of June, July and August, it would be a great help. We are also developing something similar on our Website which hopefully will be available very soon. Let’s strengthen the minyan, the backbone of what synagogue is all about. Shabbat Shalom, Rabbi Herbert J. Mandl, PhD When Steve Osman asked me to served on the Executive Board, I was honored to be given the chance to serve the congregation. Steve asked each of us to give a brief summary of ourselves, so that all of the congregation can get to know us a little better. I have lived in Overland Park the majority my life and grew up at Ohev Sholom. I was very active in USY, which caused me to become more religious. While at Ohev, I taught Hebrew school, b’nai mitzvah and adult Hebrew. I graduated from KU with undergraduate and graduate degrees in education. I currently teach an 8th grade engineering course in the Kansas City, Kansas Public School, which is where I met my husband, Scott Macek. About four years ago, I began attending some services at K.I. and became a member about a year later. Soon after my parents, Greg and Dori Quinn, also joined the synagogue. My husband and I were married at K.I. a year and a half ago. We regularly attend Shabbos and holiday services, which have allowed us to build great relationships with other K.I. members. My husband and I live close to the synagogue and enjoy our walks home, many of which we share with Rabbi Mandl and Cantor Shron. I’m excited about the coming year and many of the ideas Steve has as president. I am co-chairing the Women’s Initiatives Committee with Felicia Weiner and would love to get input from other members for ideas. There are still many of you I don’t know yet, but am hoping that will change during the coming year.
