well-being.
Vestibular problems can be very debilitating for patients and many times they
go undiagnosed for a long time. If you suffer from Dizziness or Imbalance we can help you! Our Integrated Balance Program is aimed at decreasing
dizziness and loss of balance so you can stay in
balance and fully participate in a vibrant and active
lifestyle.
WHAT IS THE SMART EQUI TEST SYSTEM?
This system was initially developed for NASA to
evaluate how space flights affects balance control
and inner ear functions in astronauts. This
equipment allows rehab professionals to perform
six different tests, while the patient is standing on
a force plate, to measure body movement and
sway during different purposeful movements and
when trying to stand still under various conditions.
HOW DOES TESTING ON THE SMART EQUI
SYSTEM EVALUATE A PERSON’S BALANCE?
Balance is a very complex interaction between the
sensory system and the brain. The system helps
us examine if there is a problem in the interaction between the sensory
systems - eyes, ears, sensation in our feet and joints and the brain, which
coordinates our movements. This equipment also allows us to compare a
person’s performance to that of people their age who don’t have balance or
vestibular issues.
WHAT DOES THERAPY CONSIST OF ONCE
BALANCE ISSUES ARE DETERMINED?
Therapy allows our specialist to setup a
rehabilitation protocol for a patient’s functional limitation and quantifies performance over time. In essence, by setting
functionally specified rehabilitation program, you get better outcomes that carry
over to daily living. The therapy offered Our clinic uses infrared video Frengoggles, which are extremely

challenged environment. The SMART Equi
Test System is used because it offers the unique experience of moving
surrounding walls and floor to challenge the vestibular system more
specifically. The machine also provides visual feedback on the computer
screen.
HOW MANY TREATMENTS WILL IT TAKE TO SEE AN IMPROVEMENT
IN BALANCE?
Treatment requirements are determined with an evaluation of a person’s
condition. Most patients have seen a significant improvement in as little
as one to two weeks.
DID YOU KNOW? Falling, fear of falling and lack of balance is not a
result of age. Good Balance is normal at any age!
• Falls are the leading cause of injury-related visits to the emergency
room for people over the age of 65.
• Falls account for 70% of accidental deaths in people over the age of 75
• Fear of Falling is the number one concern for the elderly.
• Older adults who fall once are two to three times as likely to fall again
within a year.
• Loss of balance can be caused by the aging process, accidents, viruses,
heredity traits and change of weather to name a few.

As a professional contractor and painter, I was out of work for over a
month due to my dizzy condition, with the morning time being the
worse. I tried everything, including medicine, and nothing worked.
My uncle’s wife told me about PTS, so I checked them out. The staff
and Rupangi were very encouraging and in as little as one session, I
felt relief from my dizziness. Thank you for helping me get my life
back! Joe B.
As a referring physician, many of the patients I sent to PTS for
dizziness and balance issues had tremendous success with their
treatments. Since the age of about 28, I have had ongoing issues with
dizziness and balance. I am now a patient at PTS and can testify to
the excellent treatment results and care of the staff. Dr. Vazquez

(BPT) - While Americans tend to associate the holidays with togetherness,
joyful occasions and feelings of warmth
and happiness, the season can also
worsen feelings of loneliness and isolation for some people - especially older
adults. Loneliness is not only bad for
seniors' mental health, it can affect
their physical well being as well.
"The holidays can present families
with an opportunity to spot signs of
loneliness in their older family members and take
steps to do something about it,"
says Dr. Kevin
O'Neil, chief medical officer of
Brookdale Senior
Living. "Isolation
and loneliness in
seniors can lead
to debilitating
depression, high
blood pressure,
dementia and shorter life spans. Time
and time again we see that when
seniors overcome loneliness, make
new friends and feel a part of a caring
community, they're happier and their
physical health improves."
Research illustrates the link between
loneliness and the advancement of
dementia, deterioration of physical
health and shortened lifespans. Conversely, multiple studies show feeling
connected and happy is good for your
health and can lead to a longer
lifespan. What's more, happiness really
can be contagious. In fact, one study by
researchers at the University of California and Harvard University found surrounding yourself with happy people
can make you more likely to become
happy yourself.
"Social connections are vital for people of all ages," O'Neil says. "Emotional
ties are even more important for
seniors, yet they are also more vulnerable to losing those bonds through the
death of a spouse, grown children busy
with their own lives or the relocation
of a long-time friend who moves closer
to be near their own family."
As families gather for the holidays,
they should be alert to signs their
elders are feeling lonely or isolated,
including:
• Your loved one has suffered a loss,
either the death of a spouse or friend,
or relocation of a long-time cohort.
• They give verbal cues, such as complaining they have no friends, feel confined to their home, have no one to
talk to or severely miss a longdeceased companion.
• They exhibit signs of depression,
including trouble falling asleep, irritability, loss of appetite and disinterest in
activities that used to excite them.
• Their eating habits have changed.
Seniors who are feeling isolated and
depressed may lose their appetite, or
engage in unhealthful comfort eating.
• Personality or behavioral changes are
evident. Your normally stoic loved one
has become tearful, a chatty person
becomes quiet, or an out-going personality is now withdrawn.
•They become "clingy," holding a handshake or hug longer than normal, and
becoming upset when it's time for a
visit to end.
• They complain of pain or health issues
that the doctor can't explain. In some
cases, the "illness" may be an attempt
to get attention. In
other cases, it can
be a physical
response to loneliness.
• A person who
was once very
capable may begin
to have difficulty
managing daily
tasks or their
finances.
"It's vital seniors
stay connected," O'Neil says. "Every
Brookdale Senior Living community has
resident programming, activities and
opportunities for seniors to develop
closer relationships."
He recommends some tactics to help
seniors combat loneliness:
• Get moving. Physical exercise
increases the body's level of "feel good"
hormones, and can contribute to
improved sleep, as well as fewer aches
and pains. Seniors should get 30 minutes of moderately intense exercise per
day, and if you exercise with companions, you're also reaping the social benefits of the activity.
• Sit down with a friend or family member and watch a funny movie or TV
show together. Laughter's positive
effects on the mind and body are well
documented. Laughing together
improves mood and can make people
feel more connected.
• Make new connections. Sit with someone at lunch whom you don't know
well. Ask a neighbor to go for a walk
with you. Join a club or social organization.
• Help yourself feel better by helping
others. Volunteering has many positive
effects on mental health. When you volunteer your time to help others, you'll
feel good about your actions and also
expand your opportunities to meet new
people.
• Learn something new - it's not only
good for cognitive health, it gives you
the chance to make new connections
with other students. Take a craft class,
go to a personal finance seminar or take
a cooking class.
• "Loneliness can be a serious health
issue for seniors," O'Neil says. "Fortunately, it's also one of the most treatable."
• Visit www.brookdale.com to learn
more about senior living and for tips on
combating loneliness.

Don’t let Long Term Care or Nursing Home Care
DRAIN YOUR SAVINGS!
Are you aware that the
Government will pay for
Nursing Home Care without

A
n adult day care center is a non-residential facility that supports the
health, nutritional needs, social support, and daily living needs of adults in professionally staffed, group settings.
Adult Day Care allows an individual to stay in
their home, or the home of their loved one,
instead of nursing home placement. Adult Day
Care also allows an individual to engage in a
variety of activities while in a social setting with
their peers during the day.
Adult Day Care gives caregiver the opportunity
to maintain their job outside of their home
while continuing to provide care to their loved
one. It is also an opportunity for the caregiver
to take a break from providing care to their
loved ones with dementia or other chronic illnesses.
Most Adult Day Center are open Monday thru
Friday for a good part of the day. In most cases,
you can attend one day a week or five days a
week, whatever best suits your schedule. They
are a structured program that provides a variety
of health and social support services to meet
the medical and cognitive needs of seniors that
require chronic care and supervision. Adult Day
Centers provide care for 150,000 individuals
each day. Family members are the majority of
caregivers for disabled and impaired adults.
There are some huge benefits to Adult Day
Care such as therapeutic and health activities;
exercise and socialization; and very importantly
Adult Day Care may be more cost effective than
hiring a caregiver during the day. In addition,
the structure of a day program and the socialization provided can be a benefit to daily enrichment in the client’s life.
Adult Day Centers are required to have a nurse
on duty during their business hours. That nurse
can provide medication management as well as
help with activities of daily living such as bathroom assistance or even shower assistance. If
the center cares for members with dementia, it
is required to be a secure setting for the clients.
Adult Day Care in Illinois can be funded
through the Illinois Department on Aging Community Care Program as well as Veterans
Administration benefits. This financial assistance can take a burden off families as they
struggle with caregiver issues during the day.
All Centers are also private pay if community
funding is not an option. Most Adult Day Centers will be able to help you with financial qualifications to one of the programs available.
If you are a caregiver for someone and need a
break, Adult Day Care may be the perfect
resource to help you. Be sure to view the Center prior to enrolling and make sure they are
licensed in the State of Illinois to ensure proper
care.

(BPT) - Sweet treats at work. Extravagant family dinners. Buffets brimming
with holiday indulgences. There's
plenty to savor this time of year, and it
doesn't have to lead to a bigger waistline.
Licensed naturopathic doctor Dr.
Aimée Gould Shunney believes the
holidays are a time to enjoy good food
and time with family and friends. With
her expert insight, you can make
smart eating decisions while avoiding
the most notorious food traps of the
holiday season.
Avoid: Eating holiday sweets to satisfy
hunger
Eat: Proteins followed by just a bit of
dessert
"Many of us don't cook and we simply
show up to the party hungry, craving
something sweet," says Shunney. "My
suggestion is to have some dessert ...
after you have proper sustenance. Make
sure you eat regularly throughout the
day. Keeping your blood sugar stable
will help you make good choices when
you get to the party. Be sure to have
plenty of high quality protein and fat,
like fish, meat, beans, nuts and seeds, as
well as fiber, so any sugar you do eat
takes longer to metabolize. And then,
since you will be sated, you can have a
small portion of your favorite dessert.
It's a win-win."
Avoid: Meat and fatty main dishes
Eat: Flavorful and festive fish as a main
course
"Fish contains the essential long-chain
omega-3 fats EPA and DHA that are so
helpful for a healthy stress response, for
blood sugar balance, for mood, and for
heart health. Who doesn't need an extra
dose of that at the holidays?" says Shunney. "The truth of the matter is most
people rarely eat fish often enough - at
least once a day - to get a therapeutic
dose of EPA and DHA. Supplementing
with two to four caps daily of Nordic Naturals Ultimate Omega or Algae Omega, is
an excellent way to supplement fish in
the diet and ensure the myriad health
benefits associated with long chain omega-3s."
Avoid: Overindulging on chocolate goodies
Eat: Healthier alternatives that use raw
cocoa powder
"Sugar cravings are often a sign of low
blood sugar," Shunney says. "It's your
body screaming for quick energy. But
remember, while something sweet may
confer a quick energy burst, it will also
drop you on your bottom sooner than
you can say, 'Oops! I did it again.'"
Shunney suggests eating protein or opting for a healthier chocolate alternative
like Chocolate Avocado Mousse. (Recipe
by Chef Jenny Brewer at
www.nourishingnutrition.com)
Ingredients:
• 3 dates, pitted and soaked in warm
water for at least 10 minutes
• 2 large ripe avocados
• 1/2 cup raw cacao or cocoa powder
• 1 Tablespoon vanilla extract
Directions:
Pulse dates in a food processor until broken down, as close to a paste as you can
get them. Add avocados, chocolate, and
vanilla and puree until smooth, scraping
the sides as needed. Note: taste and add
more cocoa and dates if desired. Serve
with fresh berries and a few crushed
nuts for crunch.
Avoid: Eggnog, holiday cocktails and
other high calorie drinks
Eat: Water or unsweetened juice mixed
with mineral water
Shunney suggests: "Water, water,
water - not very festive, but it really is
the best thing to drink for your mood
and metabolism. Additionally, a bit of
unsweetened juice with sparkling
water is a perennial non-alcoholic
favorite that feels a bit more special
when toasting and doesn't overload
you with sugar and empty calories."
Avoid: Eating everything at a holiday
buffet
Eat: Your favorites surrounded by
veggies and protein
"Take small amounts of your favorites, otherwise you'll be miserable
and overeat everything else," says
Shunney. "Then surround those with
veggies and protein. Ideally, you
should have about 1/4 of your plate
be protein and 1/2 to 3/4 of your
plate be veggies, and no more than
1/4 of your plate be starch. It's more
doable than you think - especially if
you allow yourself to have small
amounts of the things you love."
Avoid: Baking with tons of sugar and
refined flour
Eat: Baked goods with smart sugar
and grain substitutes
"Recipes always call for way more
sugar than needed, so do some
research or experiment with cutting
sugar in half," Shunney says. "You
can also sweeten with fruit, fruit
juice, dates or coconut sugar for
added nutrition and to keep the
sugar and calories down. Substituting whole grains for refined grains is
an excellent way to add fiber and
vitamins, and adding whole nuts or
using crushed nuts as crusts is a
great way to add good quality fat to
stabilize blood sugar."

(BPT) - An estimated 77 million baby
boomers represent the largest generation of Americans born in U.S. history.
Many are embracing their golden years
and taking a proactive approach to their
well-being. If you are a boomer, you
understand nutrition is fundamental to
maintaining your health. But do you
know some foods are particularly powerful in helping you age well?
"Certain foods provide nutrients that are
extremely beneficial for baby boomers,"
says Kristen Johnson, registered dietician, nutrition expert at On Target Living,
and author of the newly released cookbook "Target To Table: Healthy and Delicious Meals One Superfood at a Time."
"Eating these superfoods regularly is one
of the easiest yet most impactful things
boomers can do for their health."
Johnson's top five superfoods for baby
boomers include:
Fresh cold water fish
"On top of being a delicious lean protein,
fish is loaded with omegas-3s that keep
our brains healthy as we age," says Johnson. "EPA and DHA are the type of omega-3 fat found in fish and are especially
important for a healthy heart, hormonal
balance, energy and mood."
Since most of us don't have access to
fresh, wild-caught or cold-water fish on a
daily basis, she suggests taking a highquality cod liver oil daily, like Nordic Naturals Orange-Flavored Cod Liver Oil.
"There's no fishy smell and a quality you
can taste," says Johnson. "Also, cod liver
oil naturally contains vitamin D, which is
needed to absorb calcium."
Super seeds
Certain seeds, like flax, chia and hemp
seeds, have extensive health benefits
and more boomers are incorporating
them into their daily meals and snacks.
"Flaxseeds and chia seeds are high in
omega-3s and fiber and contain antiviral,
antifungal and antibacterial properties,"
says Johnson. "Hemp seeds are high in
healthy omega-6s, along with being high
in protein. These super seeds help balance hormones and can also help with
digestion."
Easy ways to start incorporating seeds
into your daily routine is to add them to
smoothies or sprinkle on yogurt or oatmeal.

5 Surprising Superfoods for Baby Boomers
Super vegetables
"Vegetables provide many
nutrients, including potassium, fiber, folate, vitamins
A, E, C and are alkalizing,
meaning they neutralize
acids in the body and help
your body thrive and stay
mineralized," says Johnson.
Try to get a variety of super
vegetables into your daily
diet including leafy greens,
bok choy, broccoli, mushrooms, beets, celery, carrots,
onions and garlic. Leafy
greens and broccoli are especially high in
calcium and vitamin C needed to keep
your immune system healthy and prevent sickness. Beets and celery are
extremely detoxifying. Garlic is part of
the onion family and contributes to a
healthy immune system while helping to
lower inflammation.
Super fruits
"Fruits are packed with flavor and are
high in vitamins, minerals, fiber, cancerfighting antioxidants, and are extremely
alkalizing," says Johnson.
Strive to get a variety of super fruits in
your daily diet including strawberries,
blueberries, raspberries, lemons, limes,
apples and bananas. Dried fruits like figs,
dates, goji berries and raisins are high in
the calming mineral magnesium which
helps to relax the mind and body and aid
in digestion.
Organic virgin coconut oil
Lately there has been a lot of buzz about
coconut oil and for good reason,
explains Johnson. "Coconut oil is a
healthy saturated fat high in lauric,
capric and caprylic acids which have
antiviral and antifungal properties contributing to a healthy digestion," she
says. "Coconut oil also contains mediumchain fatty acids that can aid in a healthy
metabolism."
Try using coconut oil in baked goods or
to replace other oils when sautéing or
stir-frying. It's also a fantastic butter
substitute on toast and other foods.
Start the day on the right foot with this
easy-to-make smoothie that features
several of Johnson's recommended
superfoods. This recipe can be found on
Johnson's blog at
www.targettotable.com.

Caregiver Challenges: Is Your Parent Coping with Alcohol Abuse?
As a family caregiver, you want to
believe that your parents are as
healthy as possible, and that they are
not dealing with struggles and challenges that can make it even more difficult for them to live the highest
quality of life possible. Unfortunately,
for many seniors, alcoholism can get in
the way of even the most carefully laidout care plan. Alcohol abuse is far
more common among the elderly community than
many people think, but because of social perceptions of
alcohol use and underreporting, many go throughout
their lives coping with the problem and never getting
the help and support they need to overcome it. For as
many as 21,000 each year, alcohol abuse and its related
health concerns can lead to death.
It can be stressful to acknowledge the fact that your
aging loved one is coping with alcoholism, and even
frightening to think about confronting him. Being courageous and facing the situation head on, however, is a
way to show him that you love him, want him to be
healthy, and are available to stand by his side as he
works through the challenges related to this issue.
Some things that you should know about alcohol
abuse among the senior adult population include:
• Alcohol abuse among elderly adults dramatically
increases the risk of serious health concerns, including
stroke, liver disease, and high blood pressure
• One of the most common forms of alcoholism among
elderly adults is binge drinking. This is classified as
seniors who consume an average of six or more alcoholic beverages in one sitting at least five times a
month
• Mixing medications and alcohol can have disastrous,
even fatal, effects on the body, including damage to the
internal organs, severe drowsiness,
and internal bleeding
• Many seniors will not report their
alcohol use to their doctors, making
it impossible for the doctors to prescribe appropriate medications or
give the correct dietary guidelines.
This can also lead to a doctor misinterpreting symptoms, leading to
problems in their treatment plan
• Many experts believe that a leading contributing
factor to alcoholism among elderly adults is depression
If you are concerned about your parent’s drinking, use
these tips to help them manage it and enjoy a healthier lifestyle:
• Create a network of support. Do not attempt to
help your aging loved one through his challenge completely on your own. Create a network of support
including your siblings, your spouse, friends, neighbors, and professional care providers.
• Rely on doctors. Do not hesitate to get your parents’ doctors involved in your efforts. Let them know
about your concerns and have them help you explain
the risks to your seniors, as well as any problems associated with the medications they may be taking.
• Join a support group. Find encouragement and support by getting in touch with the elder care agency in
your area to find out about support groups designed
for families of seniors coping with alcohol abuse. This
group gives you a place to express your thoughts,
ease your stress, and feel less isolated in your challenges.

4 Ways to Save Continued from Page 2
times it does not, so be sure to check for deals before
you head out shopping.
As December nears, now is the time to start mapping
out your shopping strategy. Establish a benchmark
based on your income; create a holiday savings
account, and fund it regularly; be sure you're purchasing within the parameters of what you can truly afford;
and know when to buy and when to wait. And remember, the holidays are meant to warm the heart - not
burn the wallet!
October 15 to December 7
(BPT) - The holidays are a time of celebration, not for stressing about how
you're going to feed a room full of hungry guests. Serving fanciful fare in a
beautiful setting shouldn't be difficult just use the tricks of entertaining
experts. Here are five low-fuss ways to
impress guests with divine dishes and
tasty treats.
Warm guests upon arrival with unique
beverages
No matter what you're celebrating,
toast to good health and happiness by
serving a special seasonal drink as
guests arrive. No need to create a complex concoction - instead use your slow
cooker to create
warm beverages
that leave a lasting
impression. It's
easy to whip up a
large batch of spicy
cider or fruity
mulled wine ahead
of time so you can
spend more time
greeting guests as
they come in from
the cold. Just set
out festive mugs or
glasses and guests
can ladle a serving
at their leisure.
Create the ultimate cheese platter
Tempt taste buds and satisfy hunger
pangs without much effort by creating
a scrumptious cheese platter. From
shredded to crumbled and sharp to
sweet, Stella Cheese makes a variety of
artisanal cheeses so selecting the perfect mix is simple. Simply set out three
to five cheeses with different textures
and flavors. Plan on 2 ounces per person for an appetizer cheese plate and
4-6 ounces per person if cheese is the
main food. Add crackers and other
accompaniments like jam, olives and
nuts. Learn more at
www.StellaCheese.com.
Design a themed dessert tray
The holidays call for a little something
sweet to satisfy the palate, but there's
no need to spend the days prior to the
event blending and baking. Let a fun
foodie theme be your guide when
selecting a dessert offering. For example, buy a variety of the most decadent
chocolates available and set on a silver
tray for guests to indulge in. Alternatively, add a touch of class by creating a
truffle bar on a stunning dessert tower.
These rich desserts are as visually stunning as they are appetizing, and a small
amount goes a long way - no cooking
required.
Add ambiance with simple festive
decor
The atmosphere you create sets the
tone for the entire event. Start with a
show-stopping table centerpiece. Create a beautiful bouquet of fresh evergreen plucked from a pine in your yard
or grab a trio of large vases and fill with
shiny holiday bulbs. Add a sense of
refinement by using colorful cloth napkins and floating candles in small glass
bowls filled with water and cranberries.
Finally, set out your best stemware and
fun glass charms - then at the conclusion of the party, let guests take the
charm home as a gift.
Serve appetizers instead of full
courses
It's not always necessary to plan a five
course sit-down dinner for your holiday
guests. To
encourage mingling and merriment during
more casual
affairs, an appetizer buffet is a
mouth-watering
option. Plan
ahead and use
your creativity. A
smoked fish
draped in lemon
wedges and
capers makes a
beautiful presentation. Add a
crudité plate and
a signature
appetizer like savory Sausage, Tomato
& Goat Cheese Tarts and you'll be getting rave reviews from guests young
and old. Try this recipe to get started:
Sausage, Tomato & Goat Cheese Tarts
courtesy of Melissa Russo of
TheFarmGirlGabs.com
Serves 6
Ingredients:
1 sheet puff pastry dough, thawed
4 oz. Stella goat cheese
1 small tomato, sliced
3/4 cup cooked, ground Italian sausage
1/2 cup grated Stella parmesan cheese
1/4 cup fresh basil, chopped
salt and pepper to taste
Directions:
Preheat oven to 400 F. Unwrap puff
pastry sheet and roll out so it is
smooth. Using a knife, cut puff pastry
into 6 equal size squares. Use a small
glass to score a circle in the center of
each square. This will cause the outside
edges to puff up around the center filling.
Place one tomato slice, some crumbled
goat cheese and sausage in the center
of each square. Sprinkle each square
with parmesan cheese and top with
chopped basil. Season with salt and
pepper to taste. Bake for 20 minutes or
until golden brown.

Comprised of 3 friends, who started out singing together in church
choir. After they sang a special number that had a big band feel to it
several people told them “Hey you girls sound like the Andrews Sisters.”
That gave them the idea to bring the Andrews Sisters music to life.
In their production of "America's Wartime Sweethearts," Legacy Girls
performs a delightfully entertaining tribute to the music that uplifted

7 Unlikely Foods that Sabotage Fat Loss
(BPT) - The basic idea behind fat loss is
simple: eat better, exercise more. However, hidden in this formula are numerous
caveats and footnotes. No wonder there
are so many books and television specials
about the 100 different ways people are
supposed to exercise and eat right.
According to Becca Hurt, MS, RD, and program manager of Life Time Weight Loss at
Life Time - The Healthy Way of Life Company, "one of the most confusing parts of
dieting is the fact that many of the foods
people think will help them lose weight
actually pack on the pounds." Hurt notes
there are enemies lurking in common
foods that almost everyone eats or drinks.
So, what's to be done? To help identify
some of the most common weight-loss
enemies, Hurt has provided a list of seven
culprits everyone will want to weed out of
their diet.
Coffee shop drinks
Never mind the french fries and potato
chips, Hurt says that liquid calories are
more often one of the biggest downfalls
when it comes to losing weight. For many,
it starts with their morning coffee. While
1-2 cups of coffee with only cream added
is no harm, the danger is in the sugar
loaded, caramel-chocolate dieting disasters many people believe to be perfectly
healthy because they ordered the non-fat
options. "Not only do these drinks lead to
a sugar rollercoaster and energy crashes,
they may be loaded with as many as 500plus calories," says Hurt.
Skim milk
"Only recently, Americans started to realize fat isn't always the bad guy," explains
Hurt. "There is no difference in fat loss
between diets with no-fat and full-fat dairy
consumption, according to recent studies."
In fact, Hurt notes that people often add
sugar to enhance the taste of their skim
milk, which quickly turns it into a decidedly
unhealthy option.
Pasta
Yes, even whole grain pasta is stripped of
beneficial nutrients, bleached and loaded
with preservatives to make it more shelfstable. Pasta portions can also be confusing. "A pasta meal should begin with a big
salad, and the high protein meatballs
should be larger than the portion of pasta,"
says Hurt. "Instead of spaghetti and meatballs, it should be meatballs with some spaghetti on the side."
Reduced fat snacks
For many, reduced fat, no fat and low fat
labels on foods can be a green light to what
they believe is guilt free snacking. The principle to remember here is not all calories
are the same. "A 100-calorie pudding pack
is not as healthy as 100-calories worth of
almonds," explains Hurt. "Food that is naturally healthy doesn't have to have the "nofat" label." A handful of nuts, a few slices of
full-fat cheese or some Greek yogurt are
healthier options by far.
Energy drinks
For those looking to shed some fat, drinking one of these sugar-loaded bad-boys
means putting the brakes on their body's
fat burning process. Hurt adds that people
should get no more than 5 percent of their
calories from sugar and just one energy
drink will put someone well over this limit.
Sandwiches
While many think ordering a sandwich is a
diet-friendly alternative to a burger, consider this: one sandwich has as many carbohydrates as a Kit-Kat bar! "Carbs are not a
sustainable source of energy," says Hurt,
"and are responsible for that sluggish, hungry feeling that leads many to skip workouts and snack more." The solution: ditch
the bread and add a salad!
Protein bars
They might be marketed as the fat burning,
muscle gaining snack, but don't be fooled.
Heavily processed protein bars are loaded
with sugars and carbohydrates. To get the
necessary protein, Hurt suggests looking to
nuts or animal sources such as meats or
yogurt instead.

Avoiding Common Mistakes in Estate Planning
E
state planning is designed to fulfill
the wishes of a person after his or
her death. Problems can easily arise,
however, if the estate plan contains
unanswered questions that can no longer be resolved after the person's
demise. This can, and frequently does,
lead to costly litigation counter-productive to the goals of the estate. It is
important that will be written in language that is clear and that the document has been well proofread because
something as simple as a misplaced
comma can significantly alter its meaning.
Planning for every possible contingency
is a significant part of estate planning.
Tragic scenarios in which an estate
planner’s loved ones predecease him or
her, though uncomfortable, must be
considered during the preparation of a
will to avoid otherwise unforeseen conflicts.
Even trained professionals can make
significant mistakes if they are not well
versed in estate planning. An attorney
who practices general law, while perfectly capable of preparing simple wills,
may not understand the intricacies of
trusts and guardianships. A great many
attorneys, not aware of the tax consequences of bequests involving IRAs,
may leave heirs with unnecessary
financial obligations. If an attorney is
not knowledgeable enough to ask the
proper questions, he or she will be
unable to prepare an estate plan that
functions efficiently and ensures the
proper distribution of the estate's
assets.
In spite of the wealth of an individual,
the estate may be cash deficient if that
wealth is tied up in assets at the time of
the individual's death. Problems can
also result if an estate planner has distributed assets into joint bank accounts
or accounts with pay on death provisions. If the executor of the estate does
not have access to funds to pay the
estate's bills or taxes, the heirs of the
estate may run into trouble.
Even if estate planning is handled well
from a logistical point of view, lack of
communication with loved ones can
interfere with a will's desired execution. A tragedy that incapacitates the
testator can occur suddenly, so it is
imperative that a savvy estate planner
confers with loved ones as soon as possible, making them aware of any future
obligations, such as life insurance premiums that must be paid and informing
them of the location of any probate
documents and inventories of assets.
Such conversations ensure that the
individual's wishes will be carried out
without complications or delay in the
event of an unexpected incapacity.
In addition to communicating logistical
information, it is also essential to
schedule a personal conversation with
loved ones that makes clear any sentimental bequests or large gifts that
require explanation. This avoids the
shock or discomfort that may arise
after one's death during which a wellthought-out decision is questioned as
impulsive or irrational. Such direct communication of one's plans avoids
unnecessary envy, arguments or rivalry
among family and friends.
Consulting with attorneys who specialize in estate planning is the cornerstone
of creating a plan to ensure that one's
desires are carried out and that all the
bases are covered. Estate planning
attorneys serve as invaluable repositories of all information necessary to
strategizing a plan that not only meets
one's personal needs and desires, but is
legally binding.
