Follow The Seminoles On Social Media Florida State’s short week takes them to the northeast where the Seminoles will face Boston College on Thursday night live on ESPN. The Eagles had been at the bottom of the ACC barrel throughout the season before picking up their first conference win of the year last weekend against Maryland. FSU traditionally struggles on short weeks but is coming off arguably its most impressive game of the year in the win over NC State. Nevertheless, Florida State coach Jimbo Fisher -- after touching on the many bright spots of the Seminoles’ win over NC State this past weekend -- shared with the media at his Monday press conference one particular area that his team needs to clean up on its short week before Thursday’s game at Boston College. “The only disappointing thing in the whole day really when you get right down to it, the running game was solid we just missed thirdand-shorts,” Fisher said. “We missed three third-andtwo or lesses, which cost us three possessions which could be 10, 12 or 14 more plays.” Despite those few stalled drives, FSU really did have its way with the Wolfpack and picked up its third victory in as many games. But for as impressive as the FSU offense -- and in particular, quarterback EJ Manuel -- played last Saturday, it was the Seminoles’ defense Jermaine Thomas and the FSU running game needs to get that had arguably their best better in short yardage situations. game as a unit all season. “Any time you get a shut out pressure on them.” FSU held the Wolfpack to in today’s time that’s a very just 162 yards and didn’t difficult thing,” Fisher said. ON the fIeld with coach fIsher Florida State football coach Jimbo Fisher on the Boston College Eagles: BY THE NUMBERS Bert Reed scored the winning touchdown last season against Boston College. “They do a lot of different things; constant fire zone and blitzes. They’re a constant pressure, different look every play. That’s one of the things that they’ve done a great job of. Going into this year, BC’s defense is in the top seven in the country over about the last ten year period. They do a great job defensively. They always have.” 5 29 When he’s healthy, there are few better at the quarterback position. EJ Manuel may have missed some of the Oklahoma game, all of the Clemson game and some of the Wake Forest game but he has still thrown multiple touchdown passes in five different games this season. Last year, starter Christian Ponder accomplished that feat just six times all season. A win over Boston College on Thursday night would extend what has been a staggering Seminoles streak. If FSU wins, the team would become bowl-game eligible for the 30th season in a row. Their 29game streak is currently the nation’s longest and just a few seasons away from Nebraska’s all-time record of 35 straight appearances. It was a little too close for comfort last season when the Seminoles and Eagles squared of a week after FSU blasted rival Miami. But Bert Reed made sure that Florida State came out on top. Reed’s 42-yard run on a reverse handoff from Christian Ponder in the final moments went for the go-ahead touchdown in a 24-19 win over BC. Whether or not it’s entirely accurate is up for debate, but BC’s Luke Kuechly enters the game with a nation’s-best 130 tackles to his credit. It’s a staggering statistic that obviously shows he is a talented linebacker that knows how to find the ball carrier. The FSU offense needs to know where he is. 42 130 KEY PLAYERS FLORIDA STATE boston college OFFENSE: OFFENSE: EJ Manuel has proven that he is healthy and able to run the option, buy time with his feet and make accurate passes. This week, each of those things may come just a bit easier. Boston College ranks dead last in the nation in sacks, meaning Manuel should have all the time he needs to pick apart the Eagles defense and gain big chunks of yardage on each play. When Boston College lost ACC Preseason Player of the Year Montel Harris to a season-ending injury, the pressure was on for someone to step up in his absence. That player is Rolandan Finch. The recipient of this week’s ACC Offensive Back of the Week award, Finch rushed for 243 rushing yards in Boston College’s win over Maryland last weekend. EJ Manuel • RB Rolandan Finch • RB DEFENSE: DEFENSE: The reigning ACC Defensive Lineman of the Week, Timmy Jernigan appears to be getting better and better with each game. In his first trip to Boston College, Jernigan will have to give his best run-stuffing effort against an Eagles team that is coming off a really good running day last weekend at Maryland. The Eagles currently rank 73rd in the country in rushing offense. No player in all of college football is better at finding the opposing player with the ball than Luke Kuechly. The junior linebacker has a nation’s-leading 130 tackles and is constantly around the football on every play. His presence on the field can alter what offenses and FSU’s players on that side of the ball must be aware that he is out there lurking at all times.
