The truth is that there are never enough of these types of donations because rarely do people understand the value of donation until they are touched by the gift of donation or lack thereof. It is the charge of the Five Points of Life Foundation to educate those we come into contact with about the power of donation so that when a patient needs a blood transfusion, organ transplant or stem cell transplant, the right match is available and saves their life. Imagine a world where there is always enough blood and no wait lists for organs, tissue and precious stem cells from marrow and cord blood. Striving to reach this aspiration is what motivates the foundation every day. Education is the answer. From an early age, we teach the importance of donating blood products, marrow, umbilical cord blood, organs and tissues because it is vital to the health of a community. We do this through two programs, Five Points of Life in the Classroom and Five Points of Life Kids Marathons. In addition, Five Points of Life organizes several annual events in the Southeast focused on raising awareness and funds to support the foundation. 1 Kids Marathons The Five Points of Life Kids Marathons impact school age children in elementary and middle school by providing a safe, family-oriented, healthy community event focused not only on health and wellness, but also familiarizing the students and community with LifeSouth, their local community blood center. During the 12-week program, children run 25 miles incrementally then complete the last 1.2 miles at the Kids Marathon. Upon completion, each child receives a finisher’s medal, pride in their accomplishment and hopefully the motivation to continue to exercise on a regular basis. In turn, each family leaves with more knowledge about their community blood center and the importance of donation. In 2013, Kids Marathons took place in Ocala, Fla., Mobile, Ala., Gainesville, Fla., Montgomery, Ala., Lecanto, Fla., Brooksville, Fla., Lawrenceville, Ga. and Huntsville, Ala. with more than 3,300 children participating. in the Classroom The Five Points of Life in the Classroom program is taught by LifeSouth team members and volunteers at area schools and reaches children ages 5 to 18 through a curriculum designed for specific age groups. The curriculum is straightforward, easy to teach in one class period and explores the science behind donation through hands-on interactive elements as well as the social responsibility of donation. To date, we have reached more than 40,000 children in Alabama, Georgia and Florida. Sophie’s Story When 10-year-old Sophie Shelton first heard about the 2012 Five Points of Life Kids Marathon, she didn’t hesitate to say, “Mama, I could do that.” “We always tell her she can do anything she can put her mind to,” said Sophie’s mother Lisa, but even her mother had her doubts about a marathon. Sophie was born with cerebral palsy. Her legs are wrapped in braces and she needs a walker to get around. She was determined, however, and began logging daily one-mile trips around her neighborhood. “We watched her get faster every day,” Lisa said. Sophie finished the last of the 26.2 miles at the Kids Marathon in Huntsville, Ala. cheered on by her fellow runners and her family. She returned in 2013 to participate again. “If I can do it,” said Sophie, “I know anyone can.” 2 LifeSouth’s Commitment to THE Five Points of Life FOUNDATION LifeSouth Community Blood Centers commits to helping Five Points of Life‘s mission by continuing to pledge $100,000 in an annual grant contribution to the foundation. The grant covers the foundation’s administrative expenses allowing all other donations and sponsorships to directly impact programing. This generous donation to Five Points of Life will ensure the success of the organization for years to come. Race Weekend Five Points of Life’s signature annual event, Five Points of Life Race Weekend, took place for the eighth time in 2013. With several race lengths to choose from including a marathon, half marathon, marathon relay, 5K, and the 1.2 mile Kids Marathon, there is a distance for every runner or walker. More than 2,400 participants took to the streets of Gainesville, Fla. and the University of Florida. Race Weekend serves as a fundraiser and awareness raiser for Five Points of Life. Golf Tournament In 2013, the Five Points of Life held two golf tournaments: the second annual Five Points of Life Golf Tournament at Golden Ocala Golf and Equestrian Club in Ocala, Fla. and the inaugural Five Points of Life Golf Tournament at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail at Oxmoor Valley in Birmingham, Ala. Teams teed off at premier golf courses while raising funds and awareness for the foundation. An Evening with the stones Five Points of Life’s annual gala took place on November 16, 2012 with the theme An Evening with The Stones. World-renowned Rolling Stones tribute band The U.S. Stones performed while guests enjoyed a wonderful dinner, drinks and dancing. Proceeds benefited the Five Points of Life Foundation. 3 Who we are Leadership staff Eric Martin Five Points of Life Foundation Implementation Coordinator 352-224-1623 [email protected] Elli Miles Five Points of Life Foundation Program Coordinator 352-224-1611 Nancy Eckert, MT (ASCP) SBB Chief Executive Officer Brite Whitaker Foundation Director [email protected] BOard of Directors Gary Brooks BBI Construction Management Perry McGriff Jr. Perry McGriff Johnson Fletcher Insurance Agency 4 Jim Eckert Retired Alachua County Sheriff’s Office Jim Doughton The Gainesville Sun Rodney Ford U.S. Treasury Department Kelly Henderson Trend Management Solutions, Inc. It was kept in check and put into remission with oral chemotherapy, but when she was starting her sophomore year of high school, the leukemia returned. Devon’s doctors said she needed a marrow transplant. As an African-American, Devon faced uphill odds of finding a match. A shared ethnic or racial background increases the chances that the tissue of a donor and recipient will match, but there is a scarcity of minorities who have volunteered with the National Marrow Donor Registry. Fortunately, Devon had another option available: cord blood. Blood collected from a baby’s umbilical cord at birth can be used as an alternative to a marrow transplant. The procedure causes no pain for either the mother or child, and cord blood even offers some advantages because it’s already tested, it’s available almost immediately, and it can offer more flexibility in making a match. Devon knows that an anonymous baby somewhere saved her life. “I would definitely love to have the opportunity to thank the donors who saved my life.” Ethnic Diversity is Essential - Devon Vickers diverse backgrounds often have uncommon Not all patients are able to find a match on the NMDP registry. Patients from racially or ethnically tissue types. A patient’s likelihood of finding a match on the Be The Match Registry® is Watch these patients tell their amazing stories at youtube.com/lifesouthcbc estimated to range from 66% to 93%, depending on race or ethnicity. African-American or black patients have an estimated 66% likelihood of finding a match on the registry. What this means is that African-Americans are least likely to find a match. By increasing the number of minority cord blood units on the registry, minority patients will be more likely to find a match. 6 Faces of Five Points When Hailey Jones was battling leukemia, blood donors she will never know helped save her life. In May 2010, Hailey’s family gathered at LifeSouth’s Mobile, Ala. donor center as Hailey began a new round of chemo. They returned in 2012 for her “cancer-free” birthday celebration. Hailey received transfusions of platelets twice a week and red blood cell transfusions weekly. When she started kindergarten at Allentown Elementary in Semmes, she was bald and had lost so much weight she was back into toddler-size clothes. Today, Hailey cheerleading thank all the is this region fall. blood Sean Hudson, Shoals happy, of Her healthy mother donors and Amber who helped began wants Hailey to live. a mobile team captain in LifeSouth’s Alabama, visits classrooms to teach students about the Five Points of Life and the importance of donation. This summer, he got a lesson himself. Hudson, a former Army medic with a degree in nursing has worked with LifeSouth since 2010. In 2013, after recruiting potential donors for the Be the Match Registry®, he decided to sign up himself. In April his phone rang, and he learned he was a match for a patient in need of marrow. When asked if he was still willing, he thought, “How could I not do this?” In August, he traveled to Gainesville, Fla., where he donated in a same-day surgical procedure. The patient was a middle-aged man with myoplastic syndrome, a disorder also known as preleukemia. The procedure was easier than he expected, and he was back to work within 10 days even more enthusiastic about the cause. “I think the experience is going to give me more ammunition to get people on the registry. Before all I had was book knowledge. Now I have first-hand knowledge.” - Sean Hudson 7 FINANCIALS Revenue Revenue Grants $ 100,000 In-Kind Donations 15% Contributions Other Contributions 28% 2% $ 115,875 Grants Event Registrations $ 79,569 23% In-kind Donations $ 52,077 Other Contributions $ 4,218 Total Revenue $ 351,739 32% Event Registrations Contributions Expenses 18% 70% Program Activities EXPenses Program Activities $ 252,251 12% Fundraising General/Administrative Ways to give The most convenient way for you to give to General and Administrative Fundraising $ 42,241 the Five Points of Life Foundation is through www.fivepointsoflife.org.
