An Amazing Community Partner www.lifesouth.org South CommunityBloodCenters About LifeSouth Company Profile Who we are LifeSouth Community Blood Centers is a 501(c)3, non-profit community blood supplier for hospitals in Florida, Georgia and Alabama. LifeSouth was founded in 1974 in Gainesville, Florida. LifeSouth’s mission Providing a safe blood supply that meets or exceeds the needs in each community we serve, and to provide a variety of services in support of ongoing and emerging blood and transfusion-related activities. What makes us different As a community blood center, LifeSouth’s mission is different from many blood banks. Our focus is our community. The hospitals we serve in our community are the first priority. We seek to meet those needs with our community business partners and our amazing donors who know that the blood they donate will stay here to help their families, friends and neighbors. Fast facts about blood: Every two seconds, someone in the U.S. needs blood. One out of every seven people admitted to a hospital needs blood. In 2004, LifeSouth expanded to the Morgan Region in Decatur, Ala., and Marshall Region in Albertville, Ala. The Shoals region was established in 2008 in Sheffield, Ala. Where our blood goes The blood supply collected from our donors directly serves the needs of patients at over 100 medical facilities throughout our footprint. The blood donated in the community will stay there for local patient transfusions. Only if our local supply is met will LifeSouth share the blood resources with other communities. In 2011, LifeSouth supplied blood to 68 Alabama hospitals and collected 138,000 blood donations from, and for, Alabamians. In addition to Huntsville, LifeSouth currently operates regions in Albertville, Mobile, Daphne, Cullman, Decatur, Shoals, Birmingham, Montgomery, Opelika and Dothan. Without the help of over 40 blood donors – Tray Williams wouldn’t be alive today. A blood donor himself, he understands first-hand the power of blood donation. Ernie Cocoran of Decatur reached his 500th platelet donation milestone. On July 30, 2009 Molly was nearly killed in a boating accident on the Tennessee River, not far from her home in Decatur, Ala. In her first 24 hours at the hospital she used 52 units of blood. She says as a 16-year-old, who’d never donated blood, she didn’t fully understand just how important it was. She said she now knows it was those donors who gave long before the accident who helped when there wasn’t a second to lose. “If it wasn’t for them, I wouldn’t have survived,” she said. Doctors were forced to amputate her left leg 18 days after the accident. She’s undergone 48 separate surgeries in the past three years, and her blood usage is up to 77 units. And she’s still fighting. Even with all the time in and out of Huntsville Hospital, she was determined to graduate with her class at Decatur High School. She pursed her studies online and consolidated her junior and senior year into one. In 2011, she accepted the diploma in her wheelchair.
