Saturday, May 16, 2015 ASU Acadome STUDENT NEWS/ACHIEVEMENTS Alabama Dance Festival • 13 students accompanied by 3 dance faculty recently attended and performed at the Alabama Dance Festival, a statewide dance conference held in Birmingham, AL January 16-18. Summer Scholarship Awards • Dance major Jarren Foster received full scholarships to both Joffrey Ballet and Alabama Youth Ballet in Huntsville, AL. • Dance major Lauren Smith received partial scholarship to Bates Dance Festival in Maine. Applied Learning • Dance major Laquangela Littleton applies her learning by teaching dance at iHeart Me dance studio. • Dance major Teyawnna Lawson applies her learning by teaching jazz dance at Montgomery Ballet. FACULTY NEWS/ACHIEVEMENTS • Mr. Medcalf was honored at the 27th Annual International Association of Blacks in Dance Conference held in Cleveland, Ohio this past January for his contributions to the legacy of the Karamu House through the art of dance. • Mr. Medcalf was selected to teach two classes and serve on two panels during the 27th Annual International Association of Blacks in Dance Conference January 21-25. • Mr. Atkinson is a new member on Booker T. Washington High School’s F.A.M.E. board. • Mr. Atkinson and Mr. Grant were both selected as guest instructors to teach during the 2015 Alabama Dance Festival held this past January in Birmingham, AL. • Mr. Grant’s dance works “The Need To Be” and “Mind, Body, and Spirit” were both selected to be performed at the Alabama Dance Festival in Birmingham, AL this past January. • Mr. Grant will be choreographing a dance work for Booker T. Washington High School’s Spring Dance Concert. • Mr. Grant was chosen to be a guest teacher at the 2015 American College Dance Association Festival- Southern region.
