STAFF MATERNITY LEAVE
Last Friday our Prep Blue Teacher, Caralyn Luxton, began her Maternity leave as she prepares for
the birth of her first child. We wished Caralyn and her husband Adam our best wishes. The Prep
Blue class will be taught by Michaela Langmaid for the rest of the year.
At the end of this term, our Year 1 Red Teacher, Katie O’Kane will begin her Maternity Leave as
she prepares for the birth of her second child. We wish Katie, Brendan and Chelsea our best
wishes for this joyous occasion. The Year 1 Red class will be taught for the rest of the year by
Maddie Hempel.
I know everyone will make Michaela and Maddie very welcome to Our Lady of Lourdes School.
LATE TO SCHOOL
School begins each morning at 8:30 am. The classroom teachers mark their Attendance Roll
Books at 8:40 am. If your child arrives at school after 8:40 am they are late and you must come
to the office and sign them in. Recently we have had some children who are late to school
arriving at the office and telling our secretaries, “Mum/Dad said they were too late to sign me in
– would you do it?” I remind everyone that when arriving late the parent or adult dropping the
child off must come to the school office and sign the child in.
ONE WEEK OF THE TRIAL TO GO …PARK and WALK TRIAL - At Drop-Off and Pick-Up Times
Trial ‘Park and Walk’- began last Monday for the last 2 weeks of school. In an effort to alleviate
the need for parents to use the Drop-Off area in the morning and the Pick-Up areas in the
afternoon I am pleased to announce that the Back Church Playground area (behind the Church)
will be open for parents to park and walk their children across to school.
 Drop-Off Area- will be open each morning from 8:00 am to 8:45 am. To discourage
commuter parking from using this as a car park for the day it will be locked at 8:45 am
each morning and therefore parents who are going to be at school longer than that time
should not park there.
 Pick-Up Area- will be open each afternoon from 2:30 pm to 3:30 pm. To discourage
commuter parking from parking here in the afternoon it be locked at 3:30 pm each
afternoon. Parents who are going to be at school longer than that time should not park
there.
LAST DAY OF TERM 2
 The term is rapidly progressing and when we finish this week we are down to 2 weeks of
the term to go. The term will conclude on Friday 26 June at 2:55 pm. The students will
have a two week holiday break and Term 3 will begin on Monday 13 July at 8:30 am.

We have run a pilot with a number of families and the system is working well. The information to set up Qkr
is now available to all families this can be obtained from the office or on the school app.

DATE CLAIMER: SCHOOL PHOTO DAY – TUESDAY 28 JULY
Our school photo day is booked for Tuesday July 28. We will be using Advanced Life Photography again this year.
There will be further information sent out closer to day.
PLEASE BE KIND
It has been brought to our attention that recently we have had parents confronting each other at school. I would like to
remind all adults on our school property to seek assistance from the school leadership team if they feel there are any
school issues needing to be resolved. In my experience a parent confronting another parent very rarely results in a
positive outcome.
IS YOUR CHILD WEARING ANOTHER CHILD’S JUMPER?
Please check your child’s jumper to see that they are wearing one that you own. There have been reports of children
taking home the wrong jumper. This can easily happen with jumpers being taken on and off during the day. Please
remember to label all clothing items.
Have a great weekend!

STREET SCIENCE
On Wednesday, 17 June 2015 the Year Three’s went to watch a show from Science
Steve. He had a lot of fire in the show. His first act was with a wind blower. He
started shooting cups off the heads of Year Three students using wind he created.
For his next act, he poured liquid nitrogen into a bowl which created a huge cloud
that was really cold. Science Steve came from a company called Street Science. He
showed us that Science is really cool! My favourite part was of the show was
EVERYTHING!
STREET SCIENCE EXPERIMENT (by Jack Power)
On Wednesday my class, 3Red went to a street science show with Science Steve. He
was quite funny. He started off by putting plastic cups on people’s heads and blowing
the cups off with a bazooka! The air pressure really made us blink. After that he
brought out some safe chemicals and put some liquid nitrogen in a bowl. There was so
much fog! Then we blew up some balloons and Science Steve put some balloons in the
bowl of nitrogen. After that, he pulled it out and the balloon was very stiff. Science
Steve said that the balloon had ice in it. When the warm air reached the chemicals, we
saw the balloon blow up. After that he did some firework science. The flames burst in
colour. Then he amazingly ended the show by putting some chemicals on his hand and
set it alight! Then he gave us a light reflections card. It was truly wonderful.
STREET SCIENCE (by Elizabeth Mennis)
On Wednesday Year 3Blue went to a Science incursion. It was run by Street Science. The
person that was there was a man called Steve.
For his first experiment he got a flame thrower and EXPLODED a balloon. Next he talked
about AIR, and he chose a couple of students and put red cups on their heads. Then he
used an air gun and blew the cups off their heads. Next he talked about GAS and poured
liquid nitrogen into a bowl which created a huge cloud.
Soon after three more experiments he got a chemical and put it on his hands and arms
then he set his hand on FIRE.
When he finished he gave us all a light sensor.
It was fun.

JESUS CALMS THE STORM
This Sunday’s gospel tells the narrative of Jesus calming the storm. The story of Jesus calming the storm is found in all
three Synoptic Gospels: Matthew 8:23- 27, Mark 4:35-41 and Luke 8:22-25. Mark's gospel (generally dated between 6575 CE) is widely accepted as the earliest source of this narrative. The narrative is remarkable for its graphic description
of the storm, with the waves breaking into the boat so it began to fill, and for the contrast between the calmness of
Jesus and the terror of the disciples.
There are many times in our lives when we may also feel like Jesus’ disciples- overwhelmed, fearful and at risk of
‘drowning’. Mark’s gospel recounts how, upon seeing the disciples’ fear, Jesus said ‘Peace, be still.’ At this time the
winds and the sea were calm.
When we are feeling fearful and overwhelmed who do we call upon to help us? Do we ask Jesus to be with us and help
us to gain a sense of calmness? Sometimes we just need to take some time to be still and ask for Jesus to be with us.
There are many prayer resources which you can access to help you to reflect and pray. An online resource may also be
of assistance; you might like to explore the following resources.

Library News…
There was great excitement on Tuesday as five of our Seniors, Miya Chow,
Cale Dennis, Annaleise Allam, Lindsay Baker, and Jack Taylor headed off to
the Brisbane South Readers’ Cup competition at Algester State School.
Since Easter they have had to read 5 novels and a picture book in their
‘spare’ time which was no easy task. They met one or two lunch times
each week to discuss the books and ask each other questions. They had to
be self motivated and directed. On the day they would be asked 6
questions from each book and would have 30 seconds to complete the
team answer.
th
All their hard work paid off as they came 5 in the competition against 28
competing schools. It was a great result as the scores in the top ten were
close. Dutton Park State School was the winner this year. Congratulations
for a job well done!
LIBRARY BORROWING
This week is the last week for borrowing this term. All students are asked to return their library books next week and
overdue reminders will be sent home early in the week to help in the search for missing books! If a student in the
higher grades has a chapter book that they wish to finish before returning they can come to the library and have it
renewed and return it after the holidays otherwise ALL books need to be returned please.
SCHOLASTIC BOOK CLUB
Book club orders have arrived and will be sent to children’s classes this week. Thank you to parents for
using the LOOP system as it makes things much less complicated for us in the library. If there is a problem
with any order please contact the library (3345 0711) so we can sort it out – am sure I’ll be the spanner in
the works!! We are most grateful to the parents who help in this big ‘production’ each term. The library
earns points from the student purchases which allows us to get many great free new resources.
Happy reading!

 YEAR 2 (8 year olds) to SENIORS:
8-12 year olds compete in their age group (NOT year level). A child’s age is determined as being the age they

their House and will receive a ribbon. One boy and one girl from each age group (8-12 years) will be awarded
st
nd
Age Champion (1 ) and Runner Up (2 ). To achieve this honour students will need to outshine in as many
events, both track and field, as possible.
Trials have been held during PE lessons to determine the top few boy and girl competitors from each house in
Shot Put and Long Jump. Selected children will compete at Area ‘A’. The remainder of the children will compete
for House Points at Area ‘B’. Track events have also been ‘seeded’.
Events children compete in at the Carnival are:

compete in.
