In 2015 we welcome returning families and extend a special warm welcome to our many new families who have made us the school of choice for 2015. On behalf of the P&C I would like to extend an invitation to our new families to attend a sausage sizzle to meet the P&C on Wednesday 18 February between 4.30pm and 6.30 pm prior to the P&C meeting that evening - we look forward to seeing you at school outside the staff room on that evening. We hope you like our ‘new look’ newsletter that endeavours to promote a more professional image for our school and brings us in line with many other schools who produce their own newsletters. Change always takes a bit of getting used to but we hope you find the updated calendar and additional information more helpful. 1 5 5 8 9 10 11 12 13 14 Principal’s Address SWPBS From the Admin Calendar of Events Japanese News OSHC—Camp Australia Tuckshop P & C News The School Locker Community News Another year has arrived and as we venture into our new year we continue to strive for engaged learners, robust reading and quality learning environments. In 2013, our Teaching and Learning Audit addressed areas for improvement of which we have undertaken significant headway. In 2015, we continue our explicit improvement agenda most notably in the following areas: English- Consolidation and deepening of knowledge and practice in Daily Five and CAFÉ as a targeted teaching of reading approach; school wide implementation of the Words Their Way approach in spelling, implementation and consolidation of a robust oral language programme-Book Club- in Prep and Year 1. Maths- Implementation of school wide approach- Daily 3 - and introduction of Maths Journals Art and Science of Teaching (ASoT) - the schools pedagogical framework underpins the way we do business. Consistent approaches to classroom layouts, setting of goals, core language in the classroom and the focus on the 41 elements of effective teaching is the foundation of our teaching and learning approach. Learning to Learn - The teaching and learning of Higher Order Thinking Skills, as with ASoT, underpins our teaching practice. The targeted movement of more students into the Upper 2 Bands (U2B) in NAPLAN and a strategic and explicit approach to the teaching of these skills will be implemented throughout the year. SCHOOL UNIFORM I would like to thank every parent and carer for the excellent way our students are dressed this year. The school is always very good but this year we have almost 100% of students with the correct black shoes so a BIG thank you. Also, the students are enjoying the attractive headbands and hair ties in school colours that are available at the uniform shop - they all look so striking. A reminder that shoulder length hair is to be tied up and adhering to school uniform rules contributes to students achieving their FAR points each week. Thank you once again for making this wonderful effort and instilling a sense of pride for your child in the school. MEET THE TEACHER INFORMATION SESSIONS Please refer to the Calendar for year level date claimers. IS YOUR INFORMATION UP-TO-DATE? Please register your Expression of Interest at the front administra9on office or email our Enrolment Officer at [email protected] or phone 5565 0333. Parents are asked to ensure that all information held at School Administration remains current. Should there be a change to medical conditions, family circumstances, parenting orders, court documentation affecting a student and/or change made to emergency contacts details, please formally advise the front office. MEDICATION School staff are not permitted to dispense medication nor implement medical procedures, as a parent may do so. This will only be done, at the discretion of the Principal. Parents must complete documentation (available from front office) and provide written instruction/s either from the doctor or via a chemist label (with doctor’s name on it) attached to the medication. All medication must be delivered to the front office. For some conditions, the family doctor will need to provide a Medication Action Plan (ie. Asthma and Anaphylaxis). Medication is not to be stored in a student’s bag or classroom without the Principal’s approval. SCHOOL BANKING School Banking is a fun, engaging way for young Australians to learn lifelong money-management skills. Quote of the Fortnight ‘A good teacher can inspire hope, ignite the imagination, and instill a love of learning.’ Brad Henry How it works Parents open a Youthsaver account for their children • Kids can then bank at participating schools for a fun, hands-on experience that encourages good savings habits • They receive a Dollarmites token every time they make a deposit to their savings account at school, regardless of the amount • Once they have 10 tokens, they can redeem them for a variety of reward items, including a handball, scented pencils, swimming bag and sea streamers • The more tokens they save, the more items they can redeem throughout the year Participating schools benefit by receiving a commission on every deposit made at the school and $5 for every Activated Account via the program – a great fundraising activity School Banking is run by our wonderful volunteers Jenny Justo and Melissa McKay. School Banking for 2015 will commence on Thursday 12 February, 2015. Please ensure all bank books are handed in to the office by 9:00 am each Thursday. Should you wish to open a Commonwealth Bank Account, a representative from the Bank will be visiting the school on Monday 10 March between 9am-10am, and again between 2.30pm– 3.15pm. They will be located at the top of the front entry stairs. FROM THE ADMIN TEAM BEFORE SCHOOL TENNIS PROGRAM This year, Mark Krivokuca a fully qualified Level 2 advanced (ATPCA) tennis coach will be running a morning tennis program at our school. Mark has played tennis professionally and has also travelled and trained with some professional tennis stars like Bernard Tomic, Ben Mitchell and Luke Saville. He has been coaching for 9 years since leaving the Pro Tennis Circuit. Mark will be focusing on teaching the proper tennis techniques with a philosophy on quality learning; this means classes will be capped at no more than 6 students per class to allow more quality time to hit and help accelerate student skill and development in tennis. There will only be limited tennis spaces available. If your child is interested but they have not received a flyer, please contact Mark on 0424 364 144 for all enquires, or email - [email protected] for program and fee structure. RELIGIOUS INSTRUCTION 2015 Religious Instruction is generally made available to all Years 1-7 classes by church endorsed volunteers. The class teacher retains general responsibility and supervision for the class during these lessons, but does not participate within the instruction. Religious Instruction is not usually denominationally specific, being ecumenical in nature. Parents not wanting their child/ren to be involved in Religious Instruction should forward written notice to the class teacher as soon as possible. These students will be provided with consolidation / revision school work and supervised by a teacher in another classroom during the Religious Instruction session. Any parent seeking more information about Religious Instruction should contact School Administration. CONCERNED? WHO DO I CONTACT? In such a dynamic school community, communication and information sharing is critical. Inevitably, there will be times when someone will be unsure, confused or perhaps displeased. Should anyone be concerned over an issue, it is always best to speak with the person, most closely involved with the decision or incident, in seeking clarification or issue resolution. On most occasions, when this discussion occurs, miscommunication is found to be the issue, and the matter is quickly resolved. We all want the same thing! We all want the best outcome for students! We must though work within a framework of rationality and possibility. 1. Speak with the class teacher or staff member involved, first. They know the issue so can best discuss details with you. 2. If your concern could not be resolved in this way, make an appointment to speak with the Deputy Principal or Principal. Time will be made available as soon as possible for follow up. The class teacher or staff member may be invited to also attend the interview. We want to quickly get to the ‘heart of the issue’ and resolve it. As a staff, we work as a team to achieve the highest possible educational service standards for our students. 3. If your concern could not be resolved in these ways or perhaps the matter is of an extremely serious nature, make an appointment with the Principal. Again, she will make time available to speak with you as soon as practically possible. Depending on the nature of the issue, other staff will be invited to attend the interview so that clear, open and honest communication is maintained. As stated, most issues can easily be resolved through the provision of additional explanation. We are happy to respond in this way. Give us a call. We are keen to resolve any issues that may arise. Additionally, we are always keen to hear compliments and of the good work that staff perform, so that we can pass these on. STUDENT ABSENCE LINE Every Day counts—We urge all parents to minimise holidays, special days and all unnecessary appointments to be scheduled in school time. On the day your child is absent please call the school and select the absentee line recording name, class and reason for absence. Should your child be absent for 3 or more days written notification is required. You must provide a written letter to the office or email [email protected] advising of the reason for the absence. If the absence is for a period of more than 10 days, exemption paperwork must be completed – which is available in the front office. FROM THE ADMIN TEAM LIBRARY NEWS Welcome back! I hope 2015 has started off for you and your family in a very positive way. I am currently seeking volunteers to cover books. We are fortunate to have a large selection of new readers for the Upper School AND I would be most appreciative of any help. If you have a spare hour or so please come up to the Library anytime Monday-Thursday, no experience needed, I will show you how to contact the books. Thank you to the two mums who have already offered their services. * Children in Prep-Year 5 need a suitable LIBRARY bag (not a plastic shopping bag) to borrow * All children are to borrow on their designated Library day * Books are loaned out for 2 weeks before they become overdue * Must renew loan after 2 weeks if the book is not finished; The Librarian must sight the book before a renewal will occur. Kind regards ~ Shauna Rowe LOST PROPERTY Lost property is located outside the Tuckshop in the bins provided. As we want all misplaced items returned to the rightful owners, please label ALL items brought to school, this includes hats, drink bottles, jumpers etc. All items of value are handed in frequently to the office, please always check at the office if you have lost keys, money, technology or glasses. PARKING Please observe all of the council signs and road rules around our school in regards to parking and safe practice. We have already had near misses with student and toddler safety at risk due to unsafe driving . Police patrol the school zones regularly. Please also don’t hesitate to report dangerous incidents and the car registration number plate to the front office who forward on to the police. Rules to remember: • Drop off zones are only for drop off, please observe the times listed on the signs. These zones are there for the whole school community to drop and pick up in a safe area, never leave your car unattended in these times. • Hardys Road Car Park has plenty of parking available and is only a short walk into the school. • Tarrant Drive is not preferred for drop off or pick up, never park on the footpath, in the Church and Childcare car park or on the yellow lines. COLLECTION OF STUDENTS Your Office Administration Staff are here to help and assist you but there are some things you can do to help us. Please discuss and finalise all details about school collection before school as we aim to minimise disruption to classes. All students who have not been collected by 3:15pm from the bus shelter will be taken to our on-site after school facility Camp Australia. Please contact Camp Australia on 0412 075370 if you need emergency after school help. BEFORE AND AFTER SCHOOL PROCEDURES We would like to remind parents that all students (and parents/carers if they accompany students) are to wait in the Main Undercover Area if they arrive at school before 8.50am. Please do not congregate outside classrooms as teachers are preparing for the school day and attending meetings at this time. Prep parents and carers are the exception to the rule until further notice. They will be advised by their class teacher as to when the students are settled enough to wait in the undercover area. Students who need to be at school (apart from those travelling on buses) before 8.30am need to attend the Before School facility in the hall. We request that students vacate the school grounds by 3.10pm at the latest in the afternoon. Students awaiting pick up by parents/carers are to wait in the bus shelter which is supervised by a staff member. These students are expected to follow the same rules as the bus children such as sitting down and following instructions from staff. Students who have not been collected by 3.15pm will be sent to the After School Hours Care facility in the hall. It is the Year of the Sheep according to the Chinese Zodiac, also used by Japan and many Asian countries. In Japan, they say 'あけまして おめでとう ございます’which , as a direct translation, translates to 'Congratulations on the Opening of the Year'. It is a much celebrated festival in Japan and much loved by children as they receive money gifts from family and close friends of the family. New Year in Japan is a special family time too, with family members who live away from home, all coming back to celebrate and bring in the new year. This year at Mudgee Creek, Year 4, 5 and 6 classes will learn Japanese. Year 4 have a 30 minute lesson each week, Year 5 have a 60 minute lesson and Year 6 have a 60 minute plus a 30 minute lesson. I am looking forward to some fabulous lessons with all of the classes and look forward to teaching them the first alphabet; Hiragana. This week's classes so far have been keen, enthusiastic learners and a delight to teach. I hope that this continues for the whole year.
