We believe this and it changes us; in fact, the Holy Spirit works in us so that we truly LIVE EASTER each and every day! This is the work of the Holy Spirit – to create faith that is lived! The third article of the Apostles’ Creed helps us confess this often, but it is the Holy Spirit who works this in us to believe, confess, and live it! When the Spirit of Truth comes, He will guide you into all the truth. John 16:13 April 30 - May 2, Overcome: Life Everlasting (Receiving New Members) In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world. Galatians 1:11 Check us out at: www.TrinityCP.org Managing Marriage May 5th, the first Thursday in May, is the National Day of Prayer and there is much that we can pray for. This May, pray these seven things knowing that God will hear your prayer! “Hear the cry and the prayer that your servant is praying in your presence this day.” 1st Kings 8:28 Monday – Security Our marriages need God’s hand of protection upon them as Satan is constantly working to separate us from one another and from God. Pray that God, who joined you together, would strengthen you to create safety and security in your marriage. Tuesday – Fidelity Faithfulness in an unfaithful world sticks out! May your marriage be one that is built, sustained, and directed with faithfulness to one another. Pray that your mind and heart only have eyes for your spouse. Wednesday – Integrity In marriage we made vows that we intended to keep, but keeping our word is difficult. Pray that you continually strive toward integrity regardless of what you think it might cost; because, really you have everything to gain in His good gifts! Thursday – Health There is much that attacks our health (emotional, physical, and spiritual) these days. These attacks are often little and unseen. Remain vigilant in caring for the greatest gift that God has given you – YOU – and pray for His endurance. Friday – Growth Relationships continue to grow, even if we don’t want them to (we all age and change). The Christian marriage seeks not to halt growth, but to direct growth toward God. If both husband and wife seek to grow toward God, they will naturally grow closer together. Pray that your marriage continually grow closer together and deeper in Christ. Saturday – Balance There is a reason that we pray for balance on Saturday! Schedules fill up quickly with activities in the fresh spring air, which is good; however, be sure that you balance your time in a way that reflects your values – God, Marriage, Children, Others! Sunday – Future Marriage has been under attack, and is so still. Pray for the future of your marriage, for the estate of marriage, and for God’s glorious return where we will celebrate the wedding feast of the Lamb. And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the saints, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge—that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God. Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen. Ephesians 3:17-21 Pastor Henderson Running the Race A note from the Principal Run, Forest, Run! Remember that line? Remember taking it and twisting the words to fit in who ever we were teasing at the time? We had a lot of fun with that when we were younger didn’t we? We still do! I still reference that line to every situation in which I think time moves too quickly or when I have lost time and need to move faster. Well, right now I’m referencing that phrase to this school year. It seems to have flown by quickly. This year has been a little bit of a race. Deadlines and events came and went so very quickly and like any race we ran hard to keep up. We wanted to finish and do well. Team members become sore and tired. You wanted to stop, but you knew you couldn’t. This is a great sports analogy to our daily lives. You know, the Apostle Paul liked to make these same sports analogies to our spiritual lives. Sports were very important in daily life among the Greeks and Romans. Paul constantly referenced them in his writings. He made them relate to the spirit filled life we lead. People in Paul’s day understood what he meant in I Corinthians 9:25. Do we? “Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training.They do it to get a crown that will not last; but we do it to get a crown that will last forever”. How is that race going for you? This is all for a finish line we can’t see in front of us and yet Paul is urging us on to finish this race. Other projects are temporary and we have deadlines. We are rewarded with things that after a while become meaningless. Paul tells us to keep on going to a different finish line and a prize that is beyond measure. That prize is a crown of righteousness and a place forever beside our Savior. Can you run this race in faith and finish? Yes, you can! With the power of the Holy Spirit you can’t lose! Henry Foote Interim Principal Cave Quest VBS: June 13th-16th9am-Noon Summer is coming quickly! Please discover our mini caves in the atrium and by our contemporary worship area where you will find bats hanging from the caves. Each bat will have an item requested for donation. Please take the bat home, purchase the item, and return the item back to the cave no later than June 1st. Other important VBS planning dates: Scenery construction of the cave dates: Saturday, May 7th from 9am to Noon Saturday, May 21 from 9am to Noon Sunday, May 22 from 1pm to 4pm Tuesday, May 24 from 7pm to 9pm VBS Volunteer Meeting: Sunday, May 22 from Noon to 1pm (Snacks will be provided!) A Note from the Board of Elders Dear Friends and Fellow Members, This month’s note from the Elders starts with a Hurray – Easter is NOT over! - Easter has just started a year of joy that “Christ is Risen – He has Risen Indeed!” Easter is not a one Sunday event. It is a Sunday of reminding us again and again at how blessed we are that Christ rose from the dead and overcame death and sin for us. Wow! Be happy all year! How wonderfully happy we should be with that news and reminder. I recently heard a Pastor say that “Laughter is Carbonated Holiness!” Let it fizz up for you the entire year. “Let the fizz be with you” as the Star Wars aficionados would say. The Elders have been busy as usual with a number of issues including meeting the school’s candidate for Principal, unfortunately he has returned the call. Discussing and agreeing to a request for a yoga class to be held at the church (which will be coordinated with Susan Magruder, Business Manager) and rework of the Elder assignments for member care. Please get to know your Elder. He can be an important resource for you since he is there to help you in a number of ways. You may receive a letter of introduction especially if there has been a change of assignment for you. In addition the Elders continue to assist with communion and liturgy during the services. May you have a most wonderful and merry month of May. Carsten Falkenberg Trinity gets Accredited! As many of you know Trinity Lutheran School has been going through a process to be a nationally accredited school. We completed the self-study process and had a visitation team come visit with us for a few days to see what Trinity put together for the self-study. Phil Sagissor headed up the effort. Will Samples and Melanie Johnson were instrumental in putting together an outstanding presentation. Thank you to all who worked on this project. The following Report Summary statements are from the Accreditation Team. Report Summary The Visiting Team’s Overall Impression of the School The Visiting Team wishes to thank the Trinity Lutheran School family for their hospitality during the NLSA visit. There is a strong Christ-centered school climate exhibited by administration, professional staff, support staff, students, parents, pastors, and board members. The Trinity Lutheran Church and School campus is an attractive facility and does an excellent job of supporting the educational ministry efforts and accomplishments. Outstanding Strengths -Trinity Lutheran School faculty and staff exhibit love and care for their students and school. -Teachers use a variety of strategies to enhance the learning environment. -Trinity has established a strong reputation in the Crown Point community and are known for high academic standards. -The NLSA document was well-written and organized. -Pastoral staff are to be commended for their interest and involvement in the life of their school. -The preschool program is a vital part of the Trinity ministry. -The congregation’s commitment to supporting the school part of the congregation’s ministry is to be commended -The extra-curricular and co-curricular activities and programs offered to the students and their families spans the grades. -The integration and excellence of music education is a true blessing to this ministry. -The Administrative Assistant provides passion and love for the ministry of Trinity Lutheran. -The Technology Coordinator is an essential position to continue to move Trinity forward with integration of technology into the school ministry program. Accreditation Recommendation We, the members of the visitation, recommend granting accreditation for Trinity Lutheran School, Crown Point, Indiana without reservation. An Interview with Susan Magruder, Business Manager If there was one position at Trinity that has grown and changed the most it would be Susan’s. She came to Trinity six years ago with experience in church finances. Five years ago she came on board as Development Director & Business Manager. Since then, her position has grown and evolved into Business Director. Currently she manages human resources, the custodial team, Insurance (employee and building), voucher program and SGO donations. She also approves expenses, oversees member envelopes, and supports the treasurer. We were happy to sit down with her to learn a little bit more about this busy lady. Favorite Bible verse: Psalm 27:13-14 “I remain confident of this: I will see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living. Wait for the Lord; be strong and take heart and wait for the Lord.” Favorite hymn/praise song: How Great Thou Art & Here’s My Heart by Casting Crowns What are your spiritual gifts and how do you see them being used at Trinity? I think God has made me empathetic. This has gone a long way in participating in the Stephen Ministry. The strength of a kind heart is needed when assisting voucher and past due tuition families. What is one thing people would find surprising about your job or wouldn’t expect you to do? Business Manager tasks was not originally what the church needed when I came on. I took gift planning classes through the Lutheran Foundation and as time went on the church was in need of a full time Business Manager compared to a Development Director. What about your job brings you joy? Helping people become successful. Whether it’s financially help children go to school through vouchers or scholarships. And if they don’t qualify for those, support them by creating a payment plan. For those folks that do not know a lot about the programs many members of Trinity have donated and continue to support Trinity's SGO-Scholarship Granting Organization. These donations generate a 50% Indiana State tax credit for the donor and the students who receive a scholarship from our SGO are provided a pathway into the Indiana State Choice Voucher program. The Choice Voucher program is a wonderful opportunity for families who may be unable to afford private education to receive one. Eligibility is determined by a combination of earnings and family size after first qualifying for a pathway (like SGO noted above). This current school year Trinity School has 67 voucher students. What do you do in your free time? Getting used to being a grandma! I love helping my kids with their kids. I also enjoy gardening, being outdoors, and hanging out with my three dogs. Brian & Melissa Maxwell A Night of Abundant Blessings What a wonderful AWEsome God we have! A few weeks ago in Tuesday morning Bible Class we were asked the question: “When, if ever, have you felt awe?” As I tally the results of “A Night of Abundant Blessings” I am absolutely in AWE not only of the amount of money that was raised, but also the generous spirit that caused such great donations from individuals and businesses, and the atmosphere that the 335 attendees generated in experiencing fun and fellowship! Thanks be to God for His abundant blessings that were showered upon us! As of this date, our profit was $95,320 which includes the dollar for dollar match from an anonymous donor of any contributions $500 and above for both the live auction and the Fund-A-Cause telephone solicitation. Our auctioneer, Jonathan Kraft, had never heard of anyone being so generous in this situation and not stating a limit as to the donation! The matching amount inspired two people to increase their donation to the telephone system right after the event ended. With this amount raised, Will Samples has already authorized the contract for the phone system replacement to begin throughout the church and school. Parts for the old system were no longer available and voicemails sometimes did not get delivered for days or were sent to an inbox of a different extension altogether. The new system will also have public address capabilities in the hallways, gym, cafeteria and fellowship hall. Thanks be to God that the old system kept working until the funds were received for the replacement. 15% of the profits will be given to the 8th grade for their Washington D.C. trip and 15% to Trinity’s Scholarship Fund. Trinity 7th and 8th graders plus parents help with this endeavor by soliciting donations of goods and ads as well as working the evening of the event. The remaining amount after the telephone expense of $26,675 will be used to replace the stove in the Fellowship Hall kitchen (with a contribution from Trinity League), upgrade technology in the math/science room, and begin the long range goal of standard cabinetry in all the classrooms. The Board of Church Properties has been looking into the cabinetry options to see what is best to meet the needs today and in the future. PTL will also be giving funds to this project. With the large amount raised this year, we will be able to get a good start on accomplishing this goal. Many thanks to the committee that worked so hard to make this event “happen”. It is a dedicated team that pulls the event together and even though we enjoy what we do, it is “work” and it means giving of a lot of time from people who are already very busy serving the Lord in other areas at Trinity. For this reason, a few of the committee members are stepping down from their responsibilities. If you would like to help serve on this committee please let Pastor Henderson know. Our God truly is an AWEsome God - and Trinity is truly abundantly blessed!!! We are excited for Trinity’s youth as we move onto this next chapter here at Trinity. Stretch and strengthen with fellow Trinity folks; good for body & soul! High School Graduate Recognition We do a special recognition of all of our High School graduates. This year that will happen the weekend of June 4, 5, & 6. An email with all the details was sent to parents of those we know are graduating. If you did receive one, please email DCE Paul R. Graduates please remember to bring in a brief bio and 2 pictures, (one current and one as a child), to be posted on a display board for the first couple of weeks in June. The Stephen Minister’s role is to bring God’s love into the lives of people who are going through a difficult time or experiencing a crisis. What do Stephen Ministers do? They listen, care, support, encourage, and pray with and for a person who is hurting. And in the midst of this confidential, one-to-one, caring relationship, God’s healing love comes pouring through. Faith Family Formation Human Sexuality Champion Team - Walking with families in raising children...so no child misses the place our Heavenly Father has prepared for them! We would like to give you a free book that will help you initiate an age appropriate conversation with your child concerning God’s gift of sexuality. Contact one of the Champion Team members listed below and schedule a 10 - 20 minute conversation to preview the materials. God home with a book age and gender appropriate for your child. Conversations will include: a brief look at what the scriptures Wills Awareness Workshop Ben and Sally had three children. They were a happy family, living the dream. Tragically on a Sunday afternoon, their family vehicle was struck by a drunk driver. Ben and Sally were killed. All three children had to spend time in the hospital. Ben and Sally had never designated guardians for their children so several of their siblings became embroiled in legal battles over who would take care of their kids. The kids ended up with siblings who didn’t believe in Jesus in four months. Do you need a will? We all do. Yet most of us procrastinate. Come to a one hour Wills Awareness Workshop on Saturday, May 21st at 3pm here at Trinity. Pastor Phillip Krupski of the LCMS Foundation will share a presentation leading to the beginning of a process to get you ready to see an attorney to get your first will complete, or to update the one you already have. Thanks! “Experts” Survey Many Thanks to all who completed the survey for our “experts”, those 55 and older. We had over 80 returned! The Family Faith Formation Adulthood and Aging Champion Team is busy recording and collating the surveys. Watch future newsletters and the Green Sheets for results. We are thankful that we will be able to better support and engage those who have a wealth of life experience in our congregation. If you have not turned your survey in, there is still time. Summer Sunday School June 5th to August 28th Your help is needed! Please find, fill out, and return forms to the atrium. Summer Sunday School is in need of: Teaching Teams – Volunteer for only 1 week or more! We provide all the lesson materials and any needed coaching, you provide the love and care for God’s children! Most weeks you will be assisting one of our Sunday School teachers. Some weeks, flying solo. A great way to serve as a family! Supply & Logistics Help – Volunteer for those weeks you are able to serve. We have the supply lists and what needs to be done. We provide the supplies. You organize the materials for that week in the classroom, so the teaching team has everything they need! Trinity Wheels Help Wanted! Trinity Wheels needs help. Trinity Wheels needs to help drive Trinity members to church services and doctors appointments. This is a Trinity ministry for our members who can no longer drive.
