The In Gear is no exception. At Convention I mentioned to the delegates that it’s time to focus on the people who four- wheel, not just the vehicles and the latest land battles. Our leaders, legislators and land managers need to know that people use public lands, and it’s people that they are shutting out when a trail gets closed. We want to know more about you -- those people on the trails. Write to us and tell us your story. How did you get involved? What motivates you to pay your dues, to volunteer, to bring your children along, to help us with the land use battles that we fight? I will print as many as I can, both in print and online. Send me your story and photos at [email protected] or post them on Facebook at http://facebook.com/cal4wheel See you on the trail. — Suzy Johnson, Editor/Web Coordinator CA4WDC CONTACTS STATE OFFICERS PRESIDENT Steve Egbert 559-685-1928 559-936-3030 (cell) [email protected] PAST PRESIDENT Mark D. PRESIDENT’S REPORT STEVE EGBERT PRESIDENT M Y FIRST EVENT WAS THE MOLINA GHOST RUN IN 2003 AND I DID NOT KNOW WHAT WAS GOING ON OR WHAT TO EXPECT... OLD THINGS DONE NEW WAYS At convention this year we proudly celebrated 55 years. Over those 55 years we have done many great things and they need to continue, but times are changing. We need to do think how to do things in new innovative ways. We cannot say that is how we have always done it as numbers decline, we need to embrace new ideas, but not abandon tradition, just bring new life to the great things we have always done. Win-a-Jeep was a great example, we just gave away the first Jeep built by one builder, Poison Spyder Customs, and it was a great success. I thank Larry McRae and his crew for a job well done. The idea to do Win-aJeep different started when Mark Cave and I were driving to a meeting and talking along the way. We each ran the idea past a potential builder and we were off and running, with Jeff Blewett spearheading the project. Some said it would not work, well it did, just different. MetalCloak is up next with the 2015 Win-aJeep. See the article from MetalCloak elsewhere in this issue for the details and to find out how to get tickets. “GO ON AN ADVENTURE WITH US” Do you remember the first Cal 4 Wheel event you went to? Did you go by yourself or with a group? Have you ever been to an event? My first event was the Molina Ghost Run in 2003 and I did not know what was going on or what to expect, not much has changed in 11 years except the opportunity to fix the problem with social media, YouTube and our website, but we have not. We can also solve a second problem we had this year, there were no applicants for the foundation scholarships that require 20 hours of service to the association. Students looking for hours can help provide well written descriptions and video of each event please contact me if you or you student are interested in working on this project so I can connect you with the appropriate run chairperson. This is a high priority project moving forward. BUILDING STRONG RELATIONSHIPS Building on our work from Johnson Valley and other ongoing projects in the land use arena 2014 we look to build stronger relationships with our partners in the California Motorized Recreation Council: The Off-Road Business Association American Motorcyclists Association National AMA District 36 AMA District 37 Off-road American Sand Association California Nevada Snowmobile Association And our longtime partner Blue Ribbon Coalition. We have done this for the past 20+ years; another Jeep is getting things put on and is going to be raffled off in February 2015. As always, please support the association and buy some tickets. Time seems to go by fast… So it is never too late to get involved. Buy a Jeep ticket, buy a trailer ticket, keep your membership current, participate in the events, and even volunteer in the events. Every little bit you help will insure that we have the opportunity to try to keep our lands open to ALL and not just the elitist. The next event that you should/will participate in is Hi Desert Roundup (HDR); please see ad in this issue or the web page and sign up! And vendors please join us. Remember we are camping behind Slash X (on private land) but enjoying the trails in Stoddard Valley OffHighway Vehicle Area. Happy Birthday! Your association is 55 years and together we will continue our leadership role in the advancement of vehicle oriented outdoor recreation. It’s been my pleasure serving the Central District as VP. Congratulations to all the award recipients at convention. A special thank you to Amy Cave, Convention Chairman, for her hard work and dedication. I would like to invite the public, all club members and club delegates to attend the Central District Meeting, hosted by the Santa Maria club, at Oceano Community Services District office, 1655 Front St., Oceano, CA 93445 on Saturday, April 26, 2014 at 10:00AM. We will be camping on the beach Friday and Saturday nights. Santa Maria may have a surprise speaker and it won’t be me. Mark your calendars for May 9-11, 2014 at Hollister Hills SVRA Upper Ranch near Hollister — Molina will be here before you know it. Other events this summer include the Blue Canyon Run and Moon Light Madness both held near Shaver Lake. I would take a lot for me to miss their Snow Run. While sitting by campfire that day, a baby black widow spider started to crawl up my hand. I jump up and brushed it off and then smashed it with my red wings. I then decided to inspect my camping chair for the babies’ mom... my son Austin said don’t worry, when mommy spiders have babies they perish... I sat down again, then Austin said, yeah the mommy dies, but I DON’T KNOW ABOUT THE DADDY SPIDERS? Okay, I am lying about jumping, but I was up pretty quick for having one leg. My son cracked me up! VP REPORTS JEFF BLEWETT NORTH DISTRICT VICE PRESIDENT I just got back from a very windy weekend in the desert at the 52nd TDS Desert Safari. I’m still cleaning dirt out of everything I took down to the desert. For me it is about a nine hour drive down to Ocotillo Wells SVRA. I towed the XVenture trailer down to Desert Safari and we made it into base camp about 2AM Friday morning. It was very windy on Friday and we had wind gusts over 40 mph in the afternoon that made Friday a pretty miserable day. Not too many people ventured out of their RV’s until after dark when the winds died down. Saturday was better and the crowds were out at the vendor show checking out the 2014 Sweepstakes Jeep and X-Venture trailer. Tickets sales were very good on Saturday and as it would be expected Sunday was gorgeous... to drive home. WINTER FUN FESTIVAL 2014 We had about 300 participants this year at WFF. Attendance was lower than usual due to not having any snow, but we still had a good crowd at the fairgrounds. The weather was warm and the participants had a good time on whatever trail they decided to go on. Jo Synder will be the Chairperson next year and she will start planning later in the year. Hopefully we can get some snow next year!!! SIERRA TREK 2014 Amy Sagraves is the Sierra Trek Chairperson this year and she has already had her first planning meeting in January. If you are interested in helping out the event please contact Amy; I’m sure she can help you find a place in the event to volunteer. Participant and Committee registrations have already opened up so please register early. 2014 CONVENTION I would like to thank Amy Cave and her committee for the recent 2014 Convention in Visalia. The hospitality room and the vendor/car show were well attended and I think everyone had a great time. I have always enjoyed Convention, but when you’re on the Board of Directors, Convention seems like endless meetings, a banquet, more meetings and then you go home. But it’s always great to see old friends and meet new ones who have the same passion for our sport as we do. SWEEPSTAKES JEEP 2014 This year’s program is over and the Jeep is off to Idaho with its new owner. The winner could not stop smiling the entire time he checked out his new ride. He owns a Jeep already and plans to come to Sierra Trek. This year’s program did very well and the details will be out soon. This year I decided to track where our income came from this year and was I surprised on how much was generated by social media and articles in the major 4x4 magazines. It shows how important it is for us to foster good relationships with editors of all types social and print media. We did a good job this year but there is definitely room for improvement. The other important decision to be made is which events to take the Jeep to. We did very well this year because we had volunteers to help us move the Jeep around the state that did not charge us much or anything for fuel or mileage costs. We will not always have volunteers like this, so we need to be careful when scheduling which events the Jeep will attend. Steve Gardiner did a great job organizing the events in SoCal and trailering the Jeep all over the state. He received an award for all his hard work.... He’s my co-chair on the 2014 SVP. Who says every good deed doesn’t go unpunished. There are lot things I could talk about when it comes to getting the Jeep ready or getting the Jeep transported up and down the state but the most important thing to talk about is all the people that made it happen. I want to thank all the volunteers who helped sell tickets at their club meetings, events or helped us staff our booths at all the events we attended. But a special thanks to goes out to: Larry McRea and the staff at Poison Spyder Customs - For building such an awesome Jeep for us. Steve Gardiner Organized all the SoCal events and transported the Jeep all over the state. Jim Bramham – Transported Jeep to SEMA, KOH and other locations. Steve Egbert Transported trailer to events and attended nearly all SVP events. Troy McClintock Transported Jeep to Cantina, Convention and staffed booth at many events. Jerry Hicks - Transported Jeep to the International Sportsman Show and staffed booth. Don Spuhler Transported Jeep to CONTINUED ON PAGE 13 IN GEAR April/May 2014 cal4wheel.com 9 NATURAL RESOURCES REPORTS JIM BRAMHAM NATURAL RESOURCES CONSULTANT I BOUGHT MY JEEP IN 1971; THE VERY FIRST PLACE I TOOK IT WAS PISMO BEACH. I am freshly back from the wonderful Cal4 Convention. I want to say thank you to the entire Central District and specifically Amy and Mark Cave and Steve Egbert for a stellar job putting on this year’s Convention. I’ve always enjoyed attending our Conventions, where we see old friends, hear the buzz of new ideas and relive the long history of our Association. It was a particular honor for me this year to honor Betty Morris at the evening banquet. I had the opportunity to sit down with Steve and their son Rick to reflect on her life and accomplishments. To put her life that was so filled with service down on paper and bring it to life before the delegates was a humbling task. Betty had accomplished much in her lifetime and contributed greatly to the sport of OHV. It was very gratifying to hear the stories about her from so many throughout the weekend. Our hearts go out to Steve and Rick as they mourn her loss. One of the subjects that was often repeated at this year’s Convention was about the need to bring a greater element of human interest and the enjoyment of our sport to the pages of the In Gear. There is certainly a need to convey the kinds of information that keep people aware of the political, land management, and litigation aspects of our sport. Very few, if any of us, go to the garage on a Wednesday night to take a look at our toys and think much of that side of the equation. It is more about where we’re going this weekend, what new gadget we can add, or attending to the scars from our last run. I know this is certainly true for me. I’m blessed with an overactive mechanical mind that is always thinking of some new project or better idea to enhance my outdoor experiences. So I plan to add some more of this type of information in my future col- was Pismo Beach. I still have and use that same Jeep and it has been on hundreds of dune trips throughout the West. In 1999 it became increasingly obvious that the environmental community was obsessed with ending or severely curtailing OHV use in the Imperial Sand Dunes, a.k.a. Glamis. At that point I was serving on the Technical Review Team (TRT) that helps the BLM oversee Jim’s grandkids enjoy the swingset at Glamis. umns as well as the stuff you need to put a tie on for. I started my love of sand dune recreation in 1964 (age 9) on a family trip along the Oregon coast. It was there I got my first dune ride in a cut down old pickup with airplane tires. I spent my entire allowance for the trip taking repeated trips in that old pickup. My first fourwheel-drive vehicle was a 1960 International Travelall. It was by no means a sand travel vehicle but it went through snow like Mikey went through Life cereal. I bought my Jeep in 1971; the very first place I took it management for the area. It was also the time that the fledgling organization, the American Sand Association (ASA), was forming to battle this threat. I was asked in an interview why I so ardently supported OHV use in the dunes and would use so much of my time toward that goal. I said the answer is fairly simple, I want my yet unborn grandchildren to be able to enjoy the sport and all that it offers. Foremost, it is the family experiences that mean the most — the long nights at the shop getCONTINUED ON PAGE 12 BECOME AN ADVOCATE FOR LAND USE HTTP://CAL4WHEEL.COM/ACTION-CENTER 10 IN GEAR April/May 2014 cal4wheel.com NATURAL RESOURCES REPORTS JOHN STEWART NATURAL RESOURCES CONSULTANT T HIS IS THE BEGINNING OF THE PUBLIC REVIEW TIME FOR THE OHMVR (GREEN STICKER) GRANTS FOR THE CURRENT GRANT CYCLE. FOR THE FIRST TIME IN SEVERAL YEARS, THE GRANT PROGRAM IS FULLY FUNDED. CALIFORNIA AIR RESOURCES BOARD CARB is beginning the public process of creating a rule that will impact many off-road vehicles. Currently, it remains unclear as to the total impact of the proposed new rule that targets emissions from gas tanks of vehicles used off-highway. The focus appears to be aimed at motorcycles. The overall program is on the “fast track” and legislation will probably be pushed. Early information available reveals a test plan that includes no provision for factoring in or eliminating the potential for “false positives,” specifically when it is identified that USED consumer or rental vehicles are PROBABLY going to be the test vehicles with only a visual or minor inspection for proper functioning. And, only a single vehicle of the category is slated to be tested. Example, one used KX-85 is to be tested, the results of that ONE bike will be the basis for ALL small two-stroke motorcycles. While the emission issue can be easily addressed with a small modification (charcoal canister that can capture fumes from the gas tank), the overall testing process remains unclear and the rise of unintended consequences is possible. As noted, the primary focus appears to be OHV motorcycles. However, wording in the final rule could apply to a broader range of vehicles used off-highway. The issue is being tracked by American Motorcyclist Association and I am in contact with them to determine what impact, if any, will apply to non-street legal 4x4 vehicles. At this time, if an off-highway motor vehicle meets current smog standards, this issue does not apply. DESERT TORTOISE The Desert Tortoise Recovery Implementation Plan is receiving new attention. I will be attending a meeting in Las Vegas on March 11 to find out more about the scope of the recovery plan. CLEAR CREEK MANAGEMENT AREA The Record of Decision has been released on the CCMA. As expected, recreation is all but eliminated from the Clear Creek area. I am working with Blue Ribbon Coalition, AMA District 36, and other partners to craft a plan moving forward to challenge the exclusion of recreation access to Clear Creek. OHMVR GRANTS This is the beginning of the public review time for the OHMVR (Green Sticker) grants for the current grant cycle. For the first time in several years, the Grant Program is fully funded. OHV LOBBY DAYS An OHV Lobby Day is scheduled for March 10. California Association of 4 Wheel Drive Clubs (CA4WDC) is among the oldest OHV associations in the State of California. Our members recreate throughout California on federal, state, county and private lands. We have, since 1959, advocated for responsible use and conservation of public lands and for the inclusion of motorized recreation in the mix of recreation options for the public. What is OHV and why is it important to every legislator? Simply put, off-highway vehicle recreation is the use of motorized vehicles to access recreation opportunity. Enthusiasts who enjoy OHV activity live in every district and visit from out of state. While the main focus of CA4WDC is to protect, promote, and provide for motorized recreation opportunities, many of our members participate in multiple forms of recreation; including but not limited to hunting, fishing, camping, hiking, horseback riding, bicycle riding, and gem and mineral collection. Our association was pleased when the Governor appointed General Anthony L. Jackson as Director of State Parks and Chris Conlin as Deputy Director of the Off Highway Motor Vehicle Recreation Division (OHMVR). We have developed an excellent working relationship with them. We hope that when you or your staff are faced with OHV questions or issues, you will reach out for their educated and pragmatic analysis as well as ours. The OHMVR Program (AKA Green Sticker) is a userfunded program created through legislation in 1971 by using gas tax revenues that are directly tied to offhighway use to manage OHV recreation statewide. The OHMVR Program manages State Vehicle Recreation Areas (SVRAs) throughout the State and an OHV Grant Program. The SVRAs are required to maintain current management plans. Two are undergoing planning document revisions; Ocotillo Wells in Imperial County and Carnegie in eastern Alameda and San Joaquin Counties. So New Year’s 2014 marked that milestone as my three grandchildren (four year old and two seven year olds) all on bikes of their own, set out to explore the small dunes as they begin their OHV legacies. What a great joy when my grandsons brought me a tool and asked how they could help get their bikes ready for the ride and my no-fear granddaughter showing the boys the best way up a dune. The picture here is not of them on bikes or with marshmallow sticks in hand, but of two of them on the swing-set that is located deep in the dunes. January brought Winter Fun Festival or maybe this year Winter Dust Festival. I have led the Saturday SUV run at WFF for over 15 years and only twice have I been able to do the routes we were able to accomplish this year with the lower snow level. I find enormous pleasure in leading these runs as they often have several first-time four-wheelers, as well as seasoned old curmudgeons looking for a new experience. This year’s group was enjoyably interactive and we passed much history, natural science, gold rush lore and unrelated trivia across the airwaves and at lunch. Among my participants was a mother and her 11-year-old son in her brand new Jeep four-door with less than 1,000 miles on it. The young man was highly intelligent and genuinely inquisitive, so it was fun for all to share in their excitement of doing exactly what they had hoped they would find in their introduction to the sport of four-wheeling. We explored the often forgotten and minimally visited middle fork of the Yuba River. There are only two crossings of this fork both requiring four-wheel drive. The beauty of this narrow canyon plus the history and legends of the small town of Allegheny made for a perfect day. I also led the Sunday SUV run. It was an unmitigated success with huge smiles and high fives. Last year at Sierra Trek we introduced an overnight SUV trip that high12 IN GEAR April/May 2014 cal4wheel.com lighted the Lake Tahoe area as well as continuing the Saturday SUV day run. I will be leading both of these runs again this August hope that many of you will think about one or the other of these runs as part of your Trek experience. Back in the land-use world, State Parks OHV Division continues its work on planning documents for both Carnegie SVRA and Ocotillo Wells SVRA. Both of these planning processes have taken the form of a zoning document that would be used by a county. Each park has been divided into subset areas, the idea being that within each of these subsets certain things will be allowed and others will be prohibited. The hope is this will organize the uses and direct them where they are most sustainable and acceptable. Both plans are being closely watched by the environmental community and that have already filed or have threatened legal action. It is in this legally contentious cauldron that we must press for the maximum possible OHV uses as well as be pragmatic about the realities facing the planners. If you visit either of these parks I would suggest that you become familiar with the planning process and what the current proposals are. There will become a time in the future when it becomes important for the public to participate and the more knowledge you have garnered, the more impactful your involvement will be. Back to Glamis, this week marked the fourteenth year of litigation to develop a Recreation Area Management Plan (RAMP). I have attended virtually all of the legal proceedings in this case and was there again Friday (February 28) to watch the environmentalists’ attorney and the US Attorney argue before the judge about allowing the RAMP to take effect. The environmentalist’s attorney was pleading the emotional side of the case with virtually nothing of the Court’s previous orders they could challenge. The US Attorney did an excellent job in attempting to focus the Judge on her task at hand and to not chase the red herrings that were being tossed about by the plaintiffs. Cal4 Wheel, the Blue Ribbon Coalition and the American Sand Association have fought sideby-side as interveners in this case. It is always uplifting to see our legal team at work and as usual they made the most salient points of the entire proceedings. I am unsure whether the odds at a Vegas crap table are better or worse than pleading your case in federal court. The Judge had promised an expeditious ruling in this case and we hope she will make a decision within the next six weeks. The environmentalists covet, in the pure biblical sense, a large area in the center part of the Dunes. Our legal team and I believe that they will not accept a ruling that goes against them by this Judge and will certainly elevate this to the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. The question would remain whether the Judge would grant a stay to her ruling leading to the appeal or allow the plan to take affect during the appeals process. The plan that is currently used dates to 1985 and does not protect the critical habitat for the Peirson’s Milk-vetch to the extent that the new plan would. So it makes sense to allow the new plan to govern dune management. LOBBY DAY Lobby Day is coming up. This is an opportunity for the various OHV groups to introduce themselves to Legislative members and their staffs. With term limits the turnover in the Legislature is extremely high and it is a constant battle to inform and educate the new folks. So far this year, there is no pressing or pertinent OHV related legislation and the budget battles that had left the OHV Fund decimated for several years are now behind us. It is no time to drop the ball. We must continue to build the relationships that will help ward off future budget insanities and build a strong case to keep the OHV Program alive and well. There will be legislation introduced in the next few years to drop the sunset clause from OHV regulation. The OHV Program is the longest running state program that still faces a sunset clause. The sunset means that every few years the program as a whole needs to be legislatively reauthorized. We are coming up on 45 years that this program has served the interests of both the OHV community and addressed environmental concerns. It is well past time to make this a permanent program. STEWART REPORT CONTINUED FROM PAGE 11 about these SVRAs. Please use State Parks or our organization as a reality/ fact filter before taking a position on these planning processes. The OHV Grant Program funds local, county and federal partners who manage OHV opportunities. These grants not only help provide safe, sustainable, and environmentally sound recreation, they support rural econo- mies. Key components of the OHMVR Program are the OHMVR Commission, SVRAs, and the OHV Grant Program. OHMVR Commissioners are appointed by Governor, State Senate and Assembly. Maintaining a full complement of commissioners and full grant funding in the State Budget is important to the viability of the program. The OHMVR Program is an important economic driver for the state and its residents. The economic tentacles of OHV activities are not limited to rural counties. Manufacturing, distribution and sales of ancillary equipment and supplies used in pursuit of recreation supports jobs and local tax bases in urban and metropolitan areas throughout the state. The current OHMVR program is approaching a sunset date. Extending and removing that sunset would ensure the continuation of a recreation opportunity and important economic engine for the state. SWEEPSTAKES JEEP 2015 If you haven’t heard, this year’s builder is MetalCloak. They have been working tirelessly since November when we bought the Jeep to have it ready to go for this year’s Convention. They did a great job and it has now been to Convention and TDS Desert Safari. Last year’s Jeep didn’t get going until June, so we are ahead of the game this year. MetalCloak has plenty more to do and we will be getting it back to them in between events. The ticket price is $5 and remember it goes to keeping our public lands open. XVENTURE TRAILER Schutt Industries has donated another trailer to CA4WDC this year. This year’s trailer comes ready to go camping with an ARB overhead tent and ARB refrigerator. Morris, the first First Lady of the California Association of Four-Wheel Drive Clubs, passed away recently. Betty’s life was punctuated with both behind-thescenes volunteerism and outfront leadership. On a chance meeting at a roller skating rink in North Sacramento, she met Steve Morris with whom she would share a lifetime of love and accomplishment. In the 1950s the Morris’s became increasingly involved in outdoor recreation evolving around the early Jeeps. As charter members of both the Sacramento Jeepers and the Tahoe Hi Lo’s, Betty was ever present to do newsletters, mailings, and coordination of a multitude of events. When it became evident that a statewide organization of Jeep clubs was needed to expand clout, increase awareness and speak with a unified voice, the Morris’s traveled bi-monthly in 1957-58 to pre-organized meetings. Betty was pivotal in the creation of the flyer that was sponsored by Jeep Corporation and sent to all registered four-wheel-drive owners in the state in an effort promote awareness in the organization. Betty produced the publi- cation that became the In Gear, the printed voice of the organization. Steve’s leadership and dedication brought him the first presidency of the organization known as California Association of Jeep Clubs in 1959. The Morris’ became involved in Jeepers Jamboree and fell in love with the Rubicon Trail. It was through this endeavor that Betty became to understand the impact of tourism on rural communities. It also brought contact with Eugene Chappie who is credited with the Chappie/ Zeberg Legislation that created the OHV Program known as Green Sticker. When Governor George Deukmejian needed a quality candidate to put on the California Off Highway Motor Vehicle Recreation Commission, he tapped Betty. Betty took this new opportunity to not just be involved, but would be committed to the process. She would scour over grant applications and visit as many sites as possible to become aware of their needs and possibilities. Her commitment to the Program was rewarded by her election to Chair by her peers. Betty advocated for education and public awareness of the sport in all its forms. It was the tourism element that was the emphasis of her tenure on the Commission. She would meet with Federal partners, rural tourism boards as well as boards of supervisors and city councils to help them understand the importance of OHV as an economic engine for rural California. Betty took her keen understanding of OHV issues to a seat on the first Board of Directors for the Blue Ribbon Coalition, a national OHV advocacy organization. She worked with the International Snowmobile Association to promote tourism as well as make the sport safer and more environmentally sustainable. Betty served on the California Forestry Association Board of Directors at the time the organization became a target for the Unabomber. The attack killed Gil Murray Executive Director of the Association and profoundly affected Betty’s understanding of the level of terror that can be fostered from policy disagreements. For Cal Four Wheel she will always be remembered as the beautiful lady who was our First. We had a GREAT Last One Standing event! With all the rain Friday night, frankly we were really worried that we would see a huge drop in turnout, but those fears quickly disappeared when we opened our registration table and there was a big line formed to sign in under sunny skies. We had 18 final competitors, with 13 in the Sportsman class and the other 5 in the Unlimited class. The most challenging obstacles were the granite wall (first event, lots of mud made it very slick) and the tire pile, which was attempted by only the unlimited vehicles with none able to make it over ot the other side. We awarded two trophies to the drivers with the fastest time overall for all events. We also had great participation from the spectators, all of them following our marked courses and watching from the safe areas that we defined. Everyone at the event followed the rules that we spelled out at the beginning and throughout the day, including no alcohol allowed in the entire area. Lastly, our registration and raffle proceeds generated $1,732, which we donated to Cal4Wheel! The prizes donated totaled over $2,500 in value, with the grand prizes being a Tepui car-top tent, GoPro video camera, and Smittybilt 8000# winch. And special thanks to Bonnie Steele (our CA4WDC office manager) for all of her help in getting our insurance together and making it happen! The Santa Cruz 4 Wheel Drive Club is truly a great club to be in and I am extremely rpoud of what we were able to accomplish together! Looking forward to another great year in 2014. IN GEAR April/May 2014 cal4wheel.com 17 OPEN GATES SUZY JOHNSON IN GEAR EDITOR All of us love an open gate. Sometimes we see them on our morning commute, or way out in the desert as we head out with our toys. What lies beyond it? Is the public allowed? We make a note to check it out someday. That day finally comes and you arrive at the gate. Only this time, it’s closed and a prominent sign confirms that it was closed with finality and purpose. Another opportunity lost. You wonder to yourself if there was something that you could have done. Vignettes like this play out throughout our state every day. Public lands are under attack by a litany of laws, local ordinances, regulations, litigation and lack of funds. Personnel shortages due to budget cuts allow our beautiful lands to fall into disrepair. Sometimes the easiest solution is to simply block access, leaving our memories and enjoyment locked inside. The next time that you are out enjoying a county road, BLM land, a state park, or a ride in the forest, ask yourself if you are sure that this land will be available for your kids to enjoy ten years from now. How about your grandkids twenty years from now? I’ll bet you don’t know the answer to that question. Do you care enough to find out? It’s a pretty safe bet that there is some sort of pending regulation, environmental compliance, lawsuit or other action with lots of letters in its abbreviation that is going to have an effect on the area that you have been enjoying for years, along with the trail that you just discovered yesterday. So what are you going to do about it? You barely have time to get out on the trail, let alone get involved in the process of keeping land open. And besides, you are just one person. The best idea is to call the person in charge of the trail/park/road that you are on. Ask them if there is any- thing pending that is going to affect your ability to recreate in the area. If there is, ask them how you can get involved and give your input. Still can’t dial the phone? Remember that excuse about being just one person and how you have convinced yourself that you can’t make a difference? That’s where Cal4Wheel comes into play. It’s the 25th Annual same thought that the association’s founders had 55 years ago, so they got together to have a bigger voice. And we are still broadcasting loud and clear for all of our land managers, litigators and legislators to hear. They listen when we call. We can keep your gate open and your memories alive. So here is my inevitable sales pitch: become part of the louder voice. You can start by joining Cal4Wheel. But don’t stop there. Let our natural resource consultants know about your favorite trails/roads/parks. Ask them if there is anything that you need to worry about and how you can help. Let’s ensure that the next time you drive up to the gate it is open wide, with a trail just for you stretching far into the horizon. IN GEAR April/May 2014 cal4wheel.com 21 SWEEPSTAKES 2015 In accepting the offer from Cal4 President Steve Egbert to head up this year’s “Win A Jeep” Build, our team at Metalcloak knew we were taking on an incredible responsibility. We weren’t just building another rig, but agreeing to effectively steward a program with a strong and growing tradition. It was a challenge we were willing to accept and a program we are extremely proud to be a part of. DRAWING FEBRUARY 21, 2015 Visalia, CA HERE ARE SOME OF THE GREAT FEATURES REVEALED AT THE 2014 CONVENTION... Most prominent was the New Kakadu rooftop tent from ARB featuring a lighter overall weight, larger windows and easier setup. Winner need not be present to win Following the awesome 2013 RockReady build of our friends, and Cal4 Supporters, Poison Spyder Customs, we were struck by the desire to start with a new theme for a new year. After much internal discussion and meetings with the Cal4 Team, we chose “Expedition California” - creating the perfect Jeep for a family to venture across our beautiful state and this great country. Presented for the first time at the 2014 Cal 4 Convention in Visalia, California, the Metalcloak-built Jeep featured many of the great products from awesome sponsors core to its theme. However, there is much more to come. As was said in a statement by Metalcloak at the Cal 4 Convention, “we hope this build is worthy of the great work of the California Association of 4 Wheel Drive Clubs and all its outstanding members.” Thank you again. Now let’s sell some tickets! nnn Supporting the tent is the Kargo Master Kongo Cage which attaches using brackets tied into existing bolt holes at front window hinges and rear body mounts for easy installation & removal. The 10lb CO2 Powertank is a powerful air system that re-fills tires quicker than most any onboard air system, is portable, has the capability to re-seat tire beads, and can run air tools. Raceline Wheels has over 35 years of experience building wheels for on and off-road and provided one of the best wheels we could have asked for - the machined finish, non-beadlock, Monster - perfect for the expedition rig with style. The “Expedition California” build features a prototype “Gen 2” Frame-Built Bumper System from Metalcloak that does not require removal of the stock frame rail cross bracing - hence it is incredibly easy to install. The suspension is Metalcloak’s 3.5” Game-Changer, ARB Edition featuring Old Man Emu shocks and Metalcloak’s advanced Duroflex Joint technology. BF Goodrich has a long history of supporting Cal 4 and did not disappoint this year with 37 x 12.50 BFG KM2’s that add that extra level of confidence and style to “Expedition California.” WAYS TO WIN! The theme, “United We Stand” was truly portrayed at the convention. I did not see just North, Central, and South District, but did see everyone working together for one purpose, keeping our lands open. I also saw everyone from all districts helping out at the convention. Everyone from all over the association was asking if they could help and not just putting it on one district. The Central District may of been the home town for the event, but everyone was helping. The South District is the chair of the event of next year but are asking for help from all of us because we are truly “United” as one association. I wish to thank everyone for all of their help with convention. I hope everyone had a great time and are looking forward to next year’s convention, February 20, 21, and 22, 2015 at the Lamplighter Inn sponsored by the South District. Your chairpersons at this time are Bonnie Ferguson and Angela Cook. If you are willing to give a helping hand, please contact them.
