CYDTC newsletter July 2016 - Craig-y
Craig-y-Don Tennis Club Newsletter Volume 1, Issue 2 Summer/Autumn 2016 The Big Issue Welcome to our second newsletter entitled ‘The Big Issue’ because it has so much content. The last couple of months have been very busy ones in the worlds of both professional and club tennis. The Brits in particular have been very successful in this the 130th Wimbledon Championships. Congratulations to Andy Murray for winning his second Men’s Singles title, Heather Watson for winning the Mixed Doubles, Gordon Reid and Alfie Hewett for winning the Men’s Singles and Doubles Wheelchair titles and Jordanne Whiley for winning the Ladies Doubles Wheelchair title. Many thanks to everyone who contributed to this issue. Although we do have an excellent room of our own in the Community Centre we nevertheless unfortunately lack our own tennis clubhouse at the moment which makes it difficult for people of all ages and abilities to socialise as much as they may like to and communicate with each other. The newsletter is therefore an important contact and information point whereby club members can hopefully feel part of a larger entity. If you have any ideas, information or photos etc that you think might be of interest to fellow members then email us at [email protected] . We had a good turnout for our recent American Tournament which was held last month. The tournament was opened up to all members and players from Craig Y Don and Rhos on Sea Tennis Clubs. Tony and Caroline Costa headed arrow and then click the border. Click theCraig-y-Don right Tennis 1 mouse button, click Create Text Box Link and then click in the text box where you want the text to flow. Repeat Continued from page one... It was nice to see some Thursday morning players playing as well. We had lovely donations of food, decent weather after a wet start and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves. The finalists were Sue, and Rob (from Rhos) against Val, and Andy (from Rhos). The final was an enjoyable match with Sue and Rob the winners. Thanks to Richard for running the tournament on the day and everyone who donated food. Val Pontin On the Courts What it’s all about: club members enjoying each other’s company on court. Welcome back from across The Pond, Liz Falconer. Welcome back from injury, David Jones. The reason why Mary Bate is so good – her racquet doubles up as a magic wand! Craig-y-Don Tennis 4 Craig-y-Don Tennis 5 QUIZ Can you recognise club members from these photographs? A. She flies across The Pond like a bird of prey from a Rodgers and Hammerstein musical. Interesting note: when she was left in her pram outside her parents’ butchers shop on Gloddaeth customers frequently took her for a ride to West Shore and back without first asking permission of her parents and without any alarm being raised or fuss being made afterwards. Those were the days. B. She plays mostly in Seniors and her name is a derivative of a white Northern city, one of whose football teams she supports. C. He brightens up the court whenever he appears on it. No need for floodlights when this lad plays. A B Some Amazing Tennis Facts. C 1. There’s a pineapple on top of the Wimbledon Men’s Trophy. It represents the tradition of English sailors putting pineapples on their gateposts when they returned from a long voyage. 2. The longest match on record took place in 2010 at Wimbledon when John Isner beat Nicolas Mahut in a match that spanned three days and lasted 11 hours and 5 minutes. Isner won the last set 70 – 68! 3. In the shortest Grand Slam Final Steffi Graf beat Natalia Zvereva 6-0,6-0 in 34 minutes. 4. Tennis was originally played with the hands. It was called ‘jeu de paume’ (game of the palm). Rackets came into use in the 16th century 5. There’s no definitive reason why we say ‘love’ in tennis. It may come from the French expression ‘L’oeuf’ as in ‘egg’ meaning zero. Craig-y-Don Tennis 6 CLUB MEMBER PROFILE AND GUEST “Barry Darlington and guest Gus Gordon” In their day club member Barry Darlington and Gus Gordon were a formidable double pair in the First Division of The Manchester and District League. Barry also played county tennis for Lancashire. Before joining CYD Barry played for Prestwich and Holcombe Brook tennis clubs in Bury. Gus is still a team player at his club and on his annual visits to Llandudno he and Barry form a doughty pairing. Judy Griffiths, Tony Costa and myself enjoyed some excellent tennis with and against this masterful pair. David Williams. Craig-y-Don Tennis 14 Using their rackets as totems club members spontaneously perform a Hopi Indian sun dance called the Oki – Koki to drive away the rain and encourage the sun to shine on the courts. Wednesday morning Session 14th July 2016 Craig-y-Don Tennis 15 Craig-y-Don Tennis 16 A video you might have missed (see link attached to this email) The North Wales Tennis Forum was held at our club in October 2015. The most contentious issue discussed was the new rules regarding the Wimbledon ticket allocations. Watch the video to find out what was said. Members have to now register with the LTA themselves online in order to be included in the ballot. The more people that register the greater the ticket allocation to the club. It is quite easy to register.
