Open Class Arts
Center Rule &
Premium Book
Arts Center Rules & Regulations
Please Read Carefully & Thoroughly!
1. The words “entry” and “entries” in this department denote properly filled in entry blanks. The words “exhibit” and “exhibits” in this department denote articles on display.
2. Entry is open to the public.
3. Exhibits cannot be entered unless a properly filled out entry blank has been submitted. Entry blanks can be
submitted at exhibit entry OR you may submit them prior to entry day by dropping one off at the fair office or
by mail, fax or email. Early entry is not mandatory.
4. If you choose to email, mail or fax an entry blank to the fair office prior to entry day, it must be received by
Aug. 2, 2016 so it can be received by the Arts Center coordinator. Emailed entries can be sent to Arts Center
coordinator Wendy Sweeter at [email protected].
5. If possible, pick up entry tags from the fair office. If needed, entry tags can be mailed. Exhibitors need to fill
out the entry tags completely and bring them with the exhibit. Entry tags may also be filled out on entry day.
Please bring address labels to put on the entry tags to make entry go faster. Turn to page 3 for how to fill out the
entry tag.
6. An exhibitor number will be assigned to you on entry day. However, if you were an exhibitor in 2015, we will
reuse your exhibitor number from last year. Please email [email protected], or call or text 605-6959819 to confirm your exhibitor number.
7. Exhibits must be the work of the exhibitor, must not be older than 2 years and shall not have been exhibited at
any previous Sioux Empire Fair. Judges will disqualify any exhibit that does not meet these requirements.
8. Exhibits must be brought to the Arts Center before 9 p.m., Wednesday, Aug. 3 or 10 a.m., Thursday, Aug.
4. The Arts Center will be open to accept exhibits Wednesday, Aug. 3 from 5-9 p.m. or Thursday, Aug. 4 from
7-10 a.m. Doors will close at 10 a.m. ABSOLUTELY NO LATE ENTRIES. We are using a computer program where we enter the entry blanks and use them for clerking so we need all entries to be on time.
9. Exhibitors may enter in as many lot numbers as they desire and can enter up to 2 exhibits per lot.
10. Exhibits sent by mail or express should be addressed to Sioux Empire Fair, W.H. Lyon Fairgrounds, 100 N.
Lyon Blvd., Sioux Falls, SD 57107-0289. The exhibitor’s name and address must be written on the outside of
the package and a label must be placed on a card inside the package for its return. The entry blank should be
enclosed. It should be clearly stated on the entry blank whether articles are to be returned by parcel post, express
or called for in person. Charges for returning articles must be prepaid by the sender.
11. Every precaution will be taken to ensure the safety of articles entered in competition, but the fair management cannot be responsible for loss or damage that may occur.
12. Anyone entering in the Junior Division should indicate their age on the entry form and the entry tag. Juniors
can enter in either the Junior Division and list their age, or in the regular section (clases 1-19) and not list their
age, but cannot enter in both divisions.
13. The decisions of competent judges will be final. Awards will not be made for unworthy exhibits even if they
1
are the only exhibits in the class. All creditable exhibits will be divided into three groups – blue, red and white.
Cash awards will be: $2 for blue ribbons, $1 for red ribbons.
14. Exhibits will be released at the south door of the Arts Center from 6-9 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 14 and from
9 a.m. until noon on Monday, Aug. 15. Exhibits not picked up in the allotted time will forfeit their premium
money.
15. To ensure the safety of your exhibit, exhibitors are prohibited from entering the exhibit area to remove exhibits until waited on by assistants appointed for the purpose. If an exhibit is removed without proper checkout
with a superintendent, no premium payment will be made.
Additional information for floriculture & horticulture exhibits
16. All horticulture and floriculture entries must be grown by the exhibitor.
17. Decayed or injured specimens must not be exhibited.
18. No artificial flowers are permitted. Only natural foliage which grows on the stem is to be shown, including
stems grown naturally without foliage.
19. Please be sure to have flowers conditioned. (Cut stems, in warm water, no leaves in water.)
20. Wedging may be used. (Clear plastic wrap around the stem to anchor it.)
21. All potted plants must have a saucer.
22. All horticulture exhibits should come on a white Styrofoam or paper plate. Write the variety on the tag.
23. For how to properly exhibit horticulture exhibits, view the publication, “Preparing Horticultural Exhibits”
from SDSU Extension, online at www.siouxempirefair.com or visit the office for a copy.
