Amish Information
Welcome to NY’s Amish Trail. Check out the following
Amish information and tips to help you with your visit.
Who are the Amish?
The Amish adhere to a Christian faith and belief system
that values community, unity, family, faith and hard work.
The Amish in our area are Old Order, a very conservative
and traditional community living without electricity,
phones, cars and other modern conveniences.
Most commonly recognized by their plain dress, horse
and buggy transportation, and old fashioned farming
practices; they live an intentional lifestyle that separates
them from the modern world and is centered around
their families and Amish community. They make a living
from farming and handcrafting products for sale.
What do the Amish make and sell?
They produce a variety of goods including quilts, rugs,
baked goods, candy, furniture, toys, baskets, eggs,
homegrown fruits & vegetables, jams, woodworking,
leather, lumber, iron works and more.

Where are the Amish shops?
The Amish sell their products from their homes--the Amish Trail
map will help you locate their businesses. Look for a sign in their
front yard and an open sign to direct you. You will not find
any large Amish stores or commercialized Amish shopping areas
or attractions. Rural, small town, personal and friendly is what
characterizes this area instead. An authentic Amish experience!
What else do I need to know?
• Amish shops are closed on Sundays and certain holidays.
Some shops may also close randomly for various reasons
such as a wedding, funeral, or family obligation.
• Amish do not accept credit cards.
• Slow down and drive with caution
around Amish horse & buggies.
• Do not take photos of the Amish or their children; it is against
their beliefs. Photos of buildings and scenery are allowed.
• Respect their privacy and personal property.
What else is there in the area?
Besides the Amish shops there are many other local
shops and businesses. Be sure to check out the Amish
Trail map & visitor’s guide for more information on
all the great shops, restaurants, accommodations, and
attractions that are part of NY’s Amish Trail.
Scan the QR code to learn more
about NY’s Amish Trail.
Please be aware that Amish businesses move and may
no longer be in the locations indicated on this map.
A limited number of gas stations are available,
so fuel up before you come!

cache through the Country
Barn Quilt Trail
information
Geocaching is a real-world outdoor treasure hunting
game. Players try to locate hidden containers, called
geocaches, using GPS-enabled devices and then share
their experiences online. New York’s Amish Geo Trail
has been developed to encourage visiting cachers and
residents to explore and get to know areas of western
Cattaraugus County that are new to them as they travel
the highways and byways of the Enchanted Mountains.
12 caches have been hidden along NY’s Amish Trail for
you to discover! You will receive a geo-button for each
cache you locate. You can obtain your geo-button by
mailing your NYAGT Leaflet to the department listed
on it or by visiting the website at http://AmishTrail.
com/geotrail. If you locate 10 of the 12 caches, you
will receive a trackable NY Amish Geo Trail Coin.
For complete instructions on participating in the
Amish Geo Trail visit, http://AmishTrail.com/geotrail.
The Amish Trail presents the Barn Quilt
Project. Originally begun as an addition to
the Amish Trail, now the Barn Quilt Project
has taken on a life of its own. The residents
of this area have decorated their homes and
businesses with various quilt patterns. Each
barn quilt is hand crafted on commercial
sign board using sign paints. Many in the
Randolph area are 2’ X 2’ or 4’ X 4’. Very few
are actually on barns.
For locations of all barn quilts, see
the back of the Amish Trail Map.
Remember to pull off the street cautiously.
Be respectful of people’s property.
