The first 4 digits of the casting number will identify the series of the gear. In this case HF54. The actual part number is a 5 digit stamped stencil number which can found in one of six places on this gear. A B C D E 13 Ross / TRW Manual TA/TD/TE Series The Ross TA/TD/TE series had been around for a long time. To identify this gear box find the casting number see (GREEN ARROW) starting with TA/TD/TE. This will identify the model of the gear. You can find the stamped stencil number (RED ARROWS) which is also the part number. 14 Saginaw Manual Series To identify the manual Saginaw gear we need to know the type of sector shaft. (See pictures below.) The rotation of both input and sector shaft and of course, the year/make/ model of the vehicle. Notched Semi-Splined Pinch Bolt Full Spline Tapered Spline 15 NSK Manual Series To identify the NSK gear we need to know the type of sector shaft. (See pictures below.) The casting number see green arrow. And, of course, the year/make/model of the vehicle. Notched Semi-Splined Pinch Bolt Full Spline Tapered Spline 16 Sheppard Gears 292 - 592 Series The early style Sheppard Gear Models 292, 372, 392, 491, 492 and 592 The model number will be cast into the housing ( see Red Arrow) the stamped stencil number (see Green Arrow) consist of 2 to 5 digits and/or letters such as SFV4 which when added to the model number make up the industry part number. In this case 392SFV4 17 Sheppard Gears M Series The late style Sheppard Gear Models M40, M60, M80, M90, M100 and M110 The model number will be cast into the housing ( see Red Arrow) the stamped stencil number (see Green Arrow) consist of 3 letters and 1 number which when added to the model number make up the industry part number. In this case M100PCA1. Note: If the last number ends in 1 the gear has manually adjusted poppet valves. If it ends in a 3 it has what is referred to as Auto Adjusting Poppet Valves. However, auto means you must follow a procedure. 18 Saginaw Twin Cylinder 7813161METX The casting number on all the Saginaw Twin Cylinder steering gears is the part number. The gear is called Twin Cylinder because it has two cylinders. One on top of the other. Some gears have METRIC cast into the housing. (see the ) Always check the end of the sector shaft for special marking such as D9 (see the ) 1980 to Current Chevy/GMC Model: C50 - C9000 with 5K to 7K Axle and casting #7813161(Metric) Except with sector shafts marked D9 19 Saginaw Twin Cylinder 7813161SAEX The casting number on all the Saginaw Twin Cylinder steering gears is the part number. The gear is called Twin Cylinder because it has two cylinders, one on top of the other. This is NOT a Metric Gear. The gear is called Twin Cylinder because it has two cylinders, one on top of the other. Some gears have METRIC cast into the housing. (see the ) 1989 to Current Chevy/GMC Model: C50 - C9000 with 5K to 9K Axle and casting #26002502 22 Saginaw Semi-Integral 7832331X The casting number on all the Saginaw Semi-Integral steering gears is the part number. All SEMI-INTEGRAL steering gears have (4) power lines and use a steering assist cylinder. Always check the end of the sector shaft for special marking such as LL (see the ) Chevy/CMC Late Brigadier 23 Saginaw Semi-Integral 5690653X The casting number on all the Saginaw Semi-Integral steering gears is the part number. All SEMI-INTEGRAL steering gears have (4) power lines and use a steering assist cylinder. Always check the end of the sector shaft for special marking such as L (see the ) 1967 to 1975 Chevy/GMC C40 – C9000 24 Saginaw Semi-Integral 5696067A or B The casting number on all the Saginaw Semi-Integral steering gears is the part number. All SEMI-INTEGRAL steering gears have (4) power lines and use a steering assist cylinder. Chevy/GMC C40 - 7500 Cabover 27 Bendix Gears 300 Series The casting number on the Bendix steering gear is the part number and of course, we always like to know the year/make/model of the vehicle to insure the correct gear. 1988 to Current Model F - FT600 to F- FT9000 with 6K to 9K axle and casting numbers 2261699 or 2260377 28 Bendix Gears 500 Series The casting number on the Bendix steering gear is the part number and of course, we always like to know the year/make/model of the vehicle to insure the correct gear. 1989 to Current Model F - FT600 to F- FT9000 with 10K to 12K axle and casting numbers 2260701 or 2260351 or 2268006 29 ZF Steering The casting number on the ZF steering gear is the part number and of course, we always like to know the year/ make/model of the vehicle to insure the correct gear. 30
