GEAR UP Gazette September 2012 The 3 Creating a New Vol. 7, Issue 12 ’s Improved ! by Traci Gardner, Program Specialist Every year when the new school year comes around, I get really excited! A new school year means new possibilities, new friends, new classes, or new adventures. Right? Unfortunately, no matter how excited I get for the new year to start, after a couple of weeks it starts to feel like the same old thing. One thing I have learned is that often when things feel like the old way it is because I am still the old me. So, I try every year to revamp and reevaluate the old me (especially the parts that maybe are not so great) to become a new and improved version of me. The following 3 Cs have really helped – maybe you can find a way to use them too! Clear the Clutter – Get rid of anything that doesn’t compliment and fit with the new you! Maybe that means getting rid of music you used to enjoy. Maybe that means cleaning out your room and getting rid of the stuff that does not help you to become the person you want to be. Or, maybe it means clearing out the harder things like getting away from friends who aren’t the best influences/examples of who you are trying to be. All of this can seem pretty overwhelming – it might be good to follow the steps below: 1. First, decide who exactly it is you want to be – then look at who you are. Whenever I do this, I always find things that I really like about myself, but I always find things that I don’t like so much about myself. And that is really hard, but if I don’t see the bad stuff I won’t know what I want to change. Knowing what you want to change can get you on track to changing it. 2. Decide what you want. Part of becoming a new and improved me often means I have to give up things. I have even had to give up some friendships to become the person I want to be. “Clearing the Clutter” really means deciding what and who in my life is helping me to be the positive/ healthy person I want to be. So you may have to give up negative habits: talk to friends that are bringing you down and explain how you are trying to change, (if they can’t handle the changes you are making you may cut down the time you spend with them), find a positive person that you Staff Notes . . . . . . . . . . . . Page 2 Student of the Month . . . . Page 2 can go to when the changes get tough, and don’t be too hard on yourself when you make mistakes – but don’t let those mistakes keep you from trying. It won’t always be easy, but I promise it will be interesting. Celebrate Life – One of the biggest ways to stop yourself from making the changes you want is by being negative. Bad/sad/ negative thoughts just teach us to have negative actions. Also, have you ever noticed that people who are really negative are also the people who are really unhappy? That is because happiness requires positivity! When I am tired of my old self I often pay close attention to how I am thinking. Am I using words that are hurting me like “I look ugly” or “I am stupid”? Am I thinking things that stop me from accomplishing my goals like “that is too hard” or “I can’t do it”? If so I know the best thing to do is change my thinking. Celebrate the things I like about myself and the things I am good at. When I do that it makes making changes much easier! Continue On – Let’s face it; sometimes no matter how hard you try to be positive, things just do not go right. When those times face me, I use this C to keep pushing toward being the new me. Some people may call it determination, I call it continuation. Continue to try. Continue to learn. Continue working through the hard times, because I know that with a little work things will be okay again. Continuation means that no matter what slows me down when I am trying to be the new me, I can find a way around it and become who I want to be. Even though I use the new school year to really look at the old me and start to create the new me, you can do it anytime. Maybe you are worried that it will be too hard or maybe you are not ready to change yet. That is okay too! Just remember the only 100 percent sure thing in life is that things (and people) change! Why not be in control of the kind of changes you make? Highlights Dear Don & Delilah . . . . . Page 5 Calendar . . . . . . . . . . . . GEAR UP says: “Dustin is a fantastic GEAR UP student! His enthusiasm about attending college in Gillette is contagious!” Dustin’s mom says: “Dustin has grown so much. He has tried really hard to reach his goals and I give him credit for working so hard. He has a bizarre but very bright sense of humor. GEARUP September 2012 Dear Don & Delilah Q: I am going into the next year of school and am worried about what I should be doing to get ready for this change. What should I expect? Is it like on TV where the freshmen are chased and tormented? - Worried A: Dear Worried, High school is not exactly how it is on TV. In real life you do not need to worry about being chased or put into your locker. However, much like on TV, you are able to make some lifelong friendships with people. Studying is a great activity to get started at the very start of the semester. Don’t fall behind on a subject if you can help it. It is harder to get caught up in a subject than to stay current or even ahead. Your instructors are invaluable tools for school. They are usually happy to answer any questions, especially if you are willing to talk to them during your passing period or outside of class. If you are feeling bullied, you should talk to your teachers, principal, or counselors right away. - Don & Delilah Attention GEAR UP students and parents! If you have a question for Don and Delilah that you would like published in the newsletter, please send it via email to: [email protected]., mail it to GEAR UP, Casper College, Strausner Student Center, 125 College Dr., Casper, WY 82601, or bring it by the GEAR UP offices. As with other materials, anything deemed inappropriate will not be published. Additionally, you are not required to include your real name, but we would appreciate it if you would include the name of your school. SCholarship o r n e r — Ingredients — — — — — — Hello Students, welcome back to school! September is the month to get organized and have a plan for school. Seniors, this month you should be looking at information for different colleges that you are interested in attending. Look at the college’s websites and see if they offer any scholarships. You should also start talking to teachers and employers to get letters of recommendation as you start thinking about applying for college. It is never too soon to start searching and applying for scholarships. The Hathaway Scholarship is a great scholarship to work towards. Make sure you know the requirements and that you are taking the right classes to qualify. Another great place to find scholarships for your needs is www.fastweb.com. This is a free website where you can find a wide variety of scholarships. So GEAR UP and start applying for scholarships! Homemade Jello Worms 2 packs (3 oz.) raspberry jello 1 pkg unflavored gelatin (for extra firmness) 3/4 cup whipping cream 3 cups boiling water 15 drops green food coloring 100 flexible straws (or enough to fill your container) Tall container (1 quart or 1 liter carton of milk) From the recipe box of Katy Hallock Directions 1) Combine gelatin in bowl and add boiling water. 2) Let it cool to lukewarm and then add the whipping cream and 15 drops of green food coloring. 3) Gather your straws (don't forget to flex them out) and put them in the container. It's important that the straws have a tight fit so the jello stays in the straws. For this reason, a one liter carton may be better; you will probably get longer worms since there is a tighter fit. If you have a bigger container, a rubber band around the straws is helpful. Or you could just add more straws to fill the container. 4) Add the gelatin mixture to the straw-filled container and let it set until firm. 5) There are multiple ways you can remove the worms from the straws. You can roll a rolling pin over the straws and squeeze them out or you can hold the straws over warm water. The worms will slip right out. And voila! Jello worms are served. 5 September Sunday Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday Saturday 1 2 3 9 10 GEAR UP office closed 4 5 11National GEAR UP 12 event 3:30 p.m. After school program 3:30-5 p.m. After school program 3:30-5 p.m. 16 17 After school program 3:30-5 p.m. 23 24 After school program 3:30-5 p.m. 18 8 13 14 15 20 21 22 26 After school program 3:30-5 p.m. ACT Test date Campus Pass Registration deadline for Oct. 27 ACT test After school program 3:30-5 p.m. NCPL Teen Book Club After school program 3:30-5 p.m. 7 After school program 3:30-5 p.m. 19 After school program 3:30-5 p.m. 25 6 27 29 30 High School Academics Academy GEARUP September 2012 Meet the GEAR UP Staff Chelse DePaolo-Lara Traci Gardner Lisa Brown Katy Hallock Stephanie Marker Chase Pickett Site Coordinator [email protected] Student Success Advisor [email protected] Program Specialist [email protected] Student Success Advisor [email protected] Student Success Advisor [email protected] GEAR UP Work Study Student www.caspercollege.edu/gearup
