The recently passed biennial budget (2015 Wisconsin
Act 55), required the Department of Public Instruction
(DPI) to procure a new state assessment for the 201516 school year. The procurement process is run by the
Department of Administration (DOA) on behalf of
DPI.

The second grade students worked on a Pourquoi Tale Unit
in Reading Class. The word pourquoi is French for “why.”
Long ago, people observed the world around them and created pourquoi tales to answer questions they had about how
things came to be the way they are. The students wrote a
pourquoi tale that explains why an animal is the way it is
today. We focused on the writing process. The students
brainstormed ideas, completed a graphic organizer with
their ideas, a rough draft, revisions, edited with a peer, edited with the teacher, and finally published. We then shared
our Pourquoi Tales with our classmates.

By Mrs. Brooke Davis
Western Marathon County Healthy Communities is comprised of a diverse group of citizens and
leaders from each of the seven municipalities in Western Marathon County—Abbotsford, Athens,
Colby, Edgar, Marathon, Stratford, and Spencer. This coalition will enable the communities involved to
share a “collective voice”, uniting their efforts, so that they can work together to create a healthy
Western Marathon County. Initially, the coalition will focus its efforts on reducing the burden of alcohol
and other drugs in Western Marathon County through collaboration, innovation, and community
change using evidence-based prevention strategies. The newly formed coalition structure will allow
each of the seven unique communities to collaborate, share resources, build skills, and seek funding
for substance abuse prevention efforts.
Vision: Healthy Kids, Healthy Families, Healthy Communities
Mission: Individual communities working to together to create a healthy Western Marathon County.
Guiding Principles:
Collaboration—Diverse partners working together to achieve a common goal.
Innovation—Stimulating new ideas and practices
Evidence-based—Integrating best practice and research for prevention
Building Skills—Enhance and mobilize community members
Community Change/Transformation—Leadership to create change with sustainable positive results
Next Meeting:
Date: Wednesday, March 16, 2016
Time: 8:30am – 10:30am at Edgar’s Korner Kitchen
Topic: Youth Treatment Programs
For more information, contact Aaron Ruff or Mandy Myszka at the Marathon County Health Department at
