PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE — The NYS Empire State
Games which ended with some of the shooting sports
reinstated are over.. Several club members participated
with a Silver medal taken by club member Doug Dailey
Jr. and BCSA member Pete Matwey in Free Rifle, Free
Rifle Prone. In the individual competition, Doug Jr. was
4th overall out of 21 shooters.
Mike Dailey and his wife Maria also participated in Free
Rifle 3 Position event but did not medal. They were 5th
overall in the team event and Mike was 9th overall and
Maria was 12th out of 21 shooters in the individual event.
Donations for coverings over the firing points on the rifle
range are coming in very slowly and amount to only
$535.00 out of an approximately $12,000.00 that is
needed to construct the cover for 20 firing points. The
number of points that will be covered will be determined
by the amount of money that is available.
Paying your NRA dues thru the club’s recruiter program
gets the club a $5.00 rebate on every renewal. You can
contact Pete Kofira Jr. 607-785-0666 [email protected]
for a NRA form and information and instructions for using
this program. Every dollar the club can receive helps to
pay for operating expenses and major projects above
what can be collected in dues.
The November 2003, Three Number Fundraiser tickets
will be in this newsletter. For those of you who have not
purchased or sold any in the past now would be a good
time to do so. As I said every extra dollar the club gets
goes to pay for club projects . If the club access road
can’t be fixed or some other project is not completed, it’s
because money is not available to do so.
If you’ve noticed , some pot holes have been filled and
other work on the roadway were done this year. This was
paid for by a generous donation by a club member.
Doug Dailey Sr.
In Memory:

2003 NYS EMPIRE STATE GAMES — The on
again off again debacle of the fate of the shooting sports
inclusion in the games resulted in in many hardships for
the shooting sports participants. When it was finally decided that that they would be included, lodging, transportation and equipment security became major problems
for the athletes. Hopefully when the 2004 games are in
the Binghamton area next year, things will go a little
smoother.
No results of the shooting activities have been posted on
the official NYS Empire Games website and will not be
for this year to the best of my knowledge. Here’s some
results I was able to obtain from local participants.
The local Central Region shooters completed a successful three days of competition at the 2003 Empire
State Games in the Buffalo area. Local shooters took
10% of all the medals awarded to Central Region competitors in all events. The scholastic prone rifle team
from the central region won the team gold medal by 90
points and each of the team members placed in the top
three.
Local medal winners are as follows:
Joe Brady, Johnson City, Gold medals in scholastic
prone rifle individual and team
Harvie Loomis, Newark Valley, free pistol individual
gold medal and team silver medal and air pistol team
silver medal
John Thompson, Harpursville, free pistol individual and
team silver medals
Gary Spear, Harpursville, free pistol and air pistol team
silver medals
Fran Spear, Harpursville, women's sport pistol individual
bronze and team gold medals
Lin Loomis, Newark Valley, and Pat DeGaramo, Afton,
women's sport pistol team gold medals
Doug Dailey Jr, Binghamton, and Pete Matwey, Binghamton, men's free rifle prone silver medals.
NEW YORK STATE SPORTERIFLE — The NYS Rifle
& Pistol Assoc. sponsored Off-Hand-Postal Competition
for 22 Cal. Rifles will start its regular season in midSeptember. Practice matches have already begun at the
three local participating clubs but there is still time to
sign up for the regular weekly matches which will run
from September 2003 thru March 2004.
NYS Sporterifle can be shot with any 22 Cal. Rifle that
weighs less than 7 1/2 pounds. For a complete set of the
rules governing the competition and match dates and
locations please visit the official website at:
http://sporterifle.org
Here's a list of the three participating local clubs with
contact numbers and shoot times. Club membership is
required for some clubs so please check with the contact
person for complete information.

DEER MANAGEMENT PROJECT— The work done by
this committee throughout the summer has produced
bountiful vegetation for the club’s deer herd. Clover, apple
trees, red cedar and white oaks that were either planted or
cultivated have produced a substantial yield.
To continue this project the committee will request, on a
volunteer basis, all club members that received a hunting
permit this season, to report some data on their deer take
after this year’s hunting season. The information request
will be simple such as: antler, antler less, male or female
and can be reported on a form mailed to the hunters.
The committee has put in a lot of effort on this project and
everyones cooperation is requested…For more information or if you can help contact:

NOVEMBER 2003 3 NUMBER FUNDRAISER — The
tickets for the Nov2003 Fundraiser are included with this
issue of the club newsletter. By purchasing or selling these
tickets you are supporting your club. The monies raised
from this fundraiser are used to the benefit of the club so
that upkeep of buildings, equipment, and the club grounds
is being maintained. Any improvements to the facility cost
a good deal of money...So please be as generous as you
can afford to help us keep moving forward.
For first time purchasers the lottery fundraiser numbers are
the numbers picked for the evening drawing of the NYS
Lotto drawing for each day in November 2003.

IDPA — The International Defensive Pistol Assoc.
matches at Square Deal have been blessed with good
weather and great participation this season. We have a
strong core of volunteers that help organize and perform
all the necessary functions that make for fun and successful matches.
This year’s season has seen many new shooters at every
match. We’ve had father and son shooting together as well
as husband and wife trying out the sport as new shooters.
Square Deal’s IDPA popularity has benefited with the
club’s purchase of a new falling plate rack that is used during the Wednesday night practice session as well as for
the regular matches. Thanks to the many members and
non-members that bought raffle tickets to support this purchase.
My personal thanks to all the volunteers that have made
the Square Deal IDPA program a success and a special
thanks to all the club members for observing the range
closings on match days for a safe season.

SMALLBORE SILHOUETTE — The matches for this season are over and will start up again in early May 2004.
In the regular NRA sanctioned class, Paul DePhillip recorded the top score of 33/40 besting eight other shooters
that compete in this class.
In the non-sanctioned Benchrest Class, Ed Novak again
P O BOX 55 72 E NDICOT T, NY 137 63
shot another perfect 40/40 score. Junior Benchrest
shooter John Salinsky Jr. shot a 38/40 to take top honors among the six juniors competing this year. The top
female shooter score went to Gina Kozel with a 20/40
also shooting in the Junior Benchrest class.
The transition from Benchrest shooter to Offhand
shooter was made successfully this year by Dave
Tremblay.
The monthly three club challenge match between
SDS,TCSA & BCSA proposed earlier this year did take
place but with limited participation. Those that did participate got to shoot at three very different silhouette setups. The most difficult by far was Mike Sporer’s setup at
BCSA.. His setup using elevated pedestals to hold the
animals is not uncommon at ranges but none of the local
shooters have ever had to shoot this type of setup. It
was a great learning experience.
Thanks to everyone that helped with the matches this
year and I hope to see everyone back next year especially the junior shooters.

The club received the following thank you note from
one of youths it sponsored to attend the camps this year.
August 27, 2003
Dear Square Deal Sportsmen Inc.,
% Mr. Haynes,
Thank you so much for sponsoring me for Camp DeBruce. I had
tons of fun and loved every aspect of it. I really enjoyed making
friends, participating in different activities, learning new things and
playing awesome games. I also really liked singing fun songs, going
on all the ‘optionals’ and camping outdoors. Overall, I was very impressed with the program, and thought it was a great experience for
me. Thanks again for sponsoring me.
Sincerely,
Hannah Nelson
