Joffre Site Brochure
NOVA Chemicals is a leading
producer of plastics and
chemicals that make everyday life
safer, healthier and easier.
Joffre
Alberta
NOVA Chemicals
Joffre Site is
located on 360
hectares (900 acres)
in Central Alberta.
We got our start in Alberta
An ethylene plant in Joffre, Alberta,
commissioned in 1979, was the foundation
for what today is one of the largest ethylene and
polyethylene production complexes in the world.
Today we have production facilities located in
Canada and the United States, and we license
proprietary technologies to leading
petrochemical manufacturers around the world.
We are primarily an ethylene/polyethylene
producer.
NOVA Chemicals, headquartered in Calgary,
Alberta is a wholly owned subsidiary of the
International Petroleum Investment Company
(IPIC) of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi.
Both our Corporate and Research &
Development headquarters are located
in Calgary and we employ about 1,100
people in Alberta.
Our world-scale manufacturing
facilities in Joffre, Alberta began
operations more than 30 years
ago. We are committed to
growing in Alberta—the foundation
of our business.

RANGE OF PETROCHEMICAL
PRODUCTS FOR CONSUMERS
At our Joffre Site we primarily produce ethylene
and polyethylene—lots of it! Each year our three
ethylene facilities can produce over six billion
pounds of ethylene, and our two polyethylene
facilities produce over two billion pounds of
polyethylene. We produce more than $2 billion
in products each year.
Ethylene is a vital building block for the plastics
and petrochemical industries. We make ethylene
from ethane (and sometimes propane) which is
extracted from natural gas in Alberta and
transported to the site by pipeline. Ethylene not
used on site is transported by pipeline to
customers in Alberta who upgrade it into a range
of chemical products such as automobile
components, shampoos, synthetic fibers and
even cosmetics.
Co-products result from the production of our
primary products. Excess hydrogen from ethylene
production is sold locally for agricultural fertilizer
production. Other products are sold to
manufacturers of consumer products such as
nylon rope, rubber, household plumbing and
specialty chemical applications.
Carbon dioxide
extracted from
our feedstock is
used in enhanced
oil recovery.
Polyethylene is a common plastic shipped
worldwide from our site in pellet form. It is used in
a number of applications you will be familiar with—
anything from protective food packaging, “boil-in”
packaging for rice or soup, to children’s toys, cable
insulation and pressure pipe.
Our manufacturing facilities are among the world’s largest and most energy efficient.
On-site infrastructure from cooling and water treatment systems,
to pipelines and rail and truck handling for product distribution, and
a Cogeneration power plant (jointly owned with other partners) all
contribute to efficient site operations.
A Linear Alpha Olefins (LAO) facility owned and operated by INEOS
adds to our integrated site. INEOS uses our ethylene as a feedstock
to produce LAOs, some of which we in turn purchase to
manufacture polyethylene.
Not only do our operations create widespread economic benefits throughout the province, but
they also contribute greatly to the production of value-added products from Alberta’s natural
gas resource. The Joffre Site annually puts about $150 million directly into Central Alberta’s
economy in the form of salaries, goods and services and municipal taxes.
NOVA Chemicals’ culture is built on the ethic and standards of
Responsible Care. The safe operation of our facilities, conservation of
resources, environmental stewardship and community engagement are
central to our long-standing commitment to Responsible Care.
Safety is critical to our business and always the number one
priority. All aspects of our operations reflect a safe and caring
attitude for our employees, our communities and the environment.
Our approach to reducing environmental impacts includes the
tracking of key environmental performance indicators that help
us understand our progress in managing the use of our valuable
natural resources and in reducing environmental releases,
emissions and wastes.
We are accountable and responsive. Through our community
outreach we inform neighbours about our facilities, operations and
products. We make concerted efforts to understand and respond to
concerns and seek input about our plans and operations through a
community advisory panel, local emergency mutual aid
organization, open houses, personal visits, a community-focused
website and community newsletter.
Being a socially responsible neighbour is key to our
community engagement philosophy. We invest in the
well-being of our communities by lending a hand to
organizations dedicated to making a difference and
improving the overall quality of life in Central Alberta.
Our investment includes about
$100,000 annually in monetary
support, “gift-in-kind” materials,
and many volunteer employee
helping hands. A robust
fundraising campaign raises funds
for the United Way of Central
Alberta to help those in our society
that need it the most.
What is Responsible Care®?
Responsible Care is the chemistry industry’s
commitment to sustainability—the betterment
of society, the environment and the economy. Its
ethic and principles compel member companies
to innovate for safer and more environmentally
friendly products and processes, and to work
co-operatively to identify and eliminate harm
throughout the entire life cycle of their products.
Launched in 1985 by the Chemistry Industry
Association of Canada (CIAC), Responsible
Care’s rigorous ethic has spread to more than
50 countries, and member companies are
widely recognized as global leaders in business
responsibility.
Member companies commit to continuous
improvement in their performance and to
openness about activities and achievements,
seeking out your concerns and addressing them.
