Hello Residents of Rough Hollow,
This is our 5th issue of Rough Hollow
Living, and I can’t believe how quickly
five months have passed. In this short
amount of time, I’ve had the privilege of
getting to know a number of you, and
I’m excited to meet everyone else in the
coming months. I love hearing your
stories and meeting your family, so I
might as well introduce you to mine.
A week before the first issue of Rough Hollow Living
arrived in your mailbox, my wife gave birth to our first child,
Olive. As most of you know, it’s a surreal experience I will
remember forever, and it’s crazy how in a moment your life
is changed forever. As I write this, Olive is a little over three
months, and I can thankfully report that our family is starting
to sleep again! Let me tell you there is nothing harder than trying to proofread text when you are sleep deprived, so if you’ve
noticed a few typos or grammatical errors over the last few
months, let’s just blame it on the baby.
Summer is an exciting time, full of long days, hot weather, and cold
drinks. Backyard BBQ’s fill the air with enticing aromas, and the
kids run to the closest pool. It’s a great time to connect with your
neighbors, and Rough Hollow is the perfect place to enjoy everything that summer has to offer. If the last few months have taught
me anything, it’s that time seems to fly by when you’re not looking,
so my hope is that you enjoy this season before it’s over. (Then again,
this is Texas, so you’ve got another 6 months before it’s too late.)

HOA
Update
By Christy Gross, HOA Manager
Lawn maintenance is an often overlooked expense for communities. Since Austin’s growing season is so long, communities
often pay considerable amounts of money to lawn care companies to take care of the common areas. But in Rough Hollow,
things are different. “We created our own maintenance group,”
Haythem tells me. “The people out there maintaining the
grounds and the parkways - that’s their only job. Their job is to
do nothing but Rough Hollow, so when they start on one end of
the street one week, they go down, then start all over again.”
There are a number of advantages for having an in-house landscaping group. Because the landscapers are focused solely on
Rough Hollow, they don’t have to divide their time between
multiple clients, so every job takes priority. Quality control is
easier to manage, since only one group is responsible for all of
the maintenance. But one of the biggest reasons to go in-house,
according to Haythem, is the cost savings.
Dear Neighbors:
“You’ve got to think of economics. You got to think of the fees
that the community members have to pay. It would be simple to
just outsource the landscaping, but what people don’t realize is
that we did that in the beginning, and by taking that in house –
it was more management intensive – but it cut the common area
maintenance in half.”
While we do not have lifeguards this season, safety is still the
number one priority. As members of the homeowner’s association we must be conscientious of the rules in place and hold our
neighbors accountable to them as well to reduce liability. Be
sure to review the pool rules with the entire family and if you
notice someone else not observing the rules, be a good neighbor
and remind them of their responsibility.
That cost savings means the community can have more amenities at the same rate because of the increased efficiency. So
next time you drive by a group of hard working landscapers,
give them a wave. They’re not only making Rough Hollow look
good, they are saving money too!
School is out and summer has officially begun! We hope you’re
already taking advantage of your Rough Hollow pools and
amenities. The Highland Village pools are now open daily with
pool monitors staffed during peak hours to assist you with general questions and in case you forget your pool key.
of 4 guests per HOA member and guests may not enter the pool
area without you. BYOB is still allowed this summer but we ask
that you use good judgment. Alcohol + the hot sun can be a bad
combination. Party kegs and glass bottles are not allowed.
We have a jam packed calendar of events! Check out www.
RoughHollowHOA.com and your email for announcements!
As always, we are honored to be a part of your Rough Life
experience and wish you the best this summer!

When she’s not swinging a bat in the backyard, Layla is currently learning how to play the guitar, but she also has ambitions
to learn the clarinet and piano. She likes to draw and read, and
currently she’s listening to One Direction and Louis Tomlinson.
Layla is a girl scout Bownie in Troop 1843, and her favorite
place to play is in her sandbox with her brother and neighbor,
Abril. PE is her favorite subject, because she likes to be active.
After a long day of playing, Layla likes to unwind with a PB&J
and an episode of “not too scary” Scooby-Doo.
When you ask Layla about her future, she has some ambitious
answers. She’d like to be the first woman President, a Sea World
orca trainer, teacher, veterinarian and doctor! But Layla isn’t
opposed to taking a little time off; she’d love to visit Hawaii to
see where she was born. But for the time being she’s content to
follow the advice of a fortune cookie that told her she should
visit Rome to see every famous piece of art.

Her advice to anyone looking for a new property is that “anytime you buy a home in any neighborhood, go to the city’s
website and see how the surrounding areas are zoned and platted. These plans are usually available years in advance.” With so
much development in and around Lakeway, it’s important to
know how the area is changing.

GO GREEN, SAVE GREEN!
Asked about why she chose to settle in Rough Hollow, Jacquelyn says, “I enjoy everything that Rough Hollow has to offer. I
absolutely love how easy it is for me and the kids to get to our
boat and enjoy the lake. I love to meet friends and family at the
Grille for brunch or happy hour. I love to walk the neighborhood or hike in the trails. I love the impromptu cul-de-sac parties and I especially love all the special events.”
Rough Hollow resident and realtor Jacquelyn Foreman is a fifth
generation Texan and Austinite since 1981. Before building a
successful real estate career where she specializes in luxury and
waterfront communities, Jacquelyn began her vocation in the
restaurant business. “I managed Wylie’s on Sixth Street and
many other downtown restaurants before meeting my husband
Daniel, who also has a restaurant background and was operating
his brother’s night club.”
Jacquelyn and Daniel decided to open their own nightclub called
the Caucus Club on New Year’s Eve in 1995. Their daughter
Danielle was two months old at the time. “It was challenging
with a new baby, and after five years and a second pregnancy, we
decided to sell our club. That’s when we both decided to go into
real estate. Daniel chose new home sales, and I went to work
for Coldwell Banker United.” Jacquelyn was driven to succeed,

and that year she received Coldwell Banker’s Rookie of the Year
award. Never slowing down, Jacquelyn has been a top producer
for Coldwell Banker United, Realtors for the past 13 years.
“I thought I wanted to be in real estate to have flexibility and
be available for my kids when they needed me. I did not realize
that I was going to be so fortunate to have a career that I would
love with all of my heart.” Her passion is what drives her to succeed, and just recently she won Austin Home Builder’s Realtor
of the Year for the second year in a row. Jacquelyn has earned
notoriety in the real estate community, having been named a
Platinum Top 50 agent each year since the award began in 2011.
She has also been named a Texas Monthly five star agent for the
last 4 years in a row, is the #1 Top Producing Realtor for Coldwell Banker United, Realtors in Lakeway, and is a Coldwell
Banker International President’s Circle Member. But if you ask
Jacquelyn the reason for what sets her apart, she can sum it up
with three words, “commitment, creativity, and perseverance.”
“I have an instinctive ability to cut to the essence, whether
selecting a property, planning the marketing focus, or negotiating price and terms. True success with my clients is earned by
respecting people's ideals and protecting their privacy. And in
return, I earn their trust and recommendations of family and
friends for life. Customers say I have a way of putting them at
ease, and letting them know they're in good hands. I know the
city like the back of my hand, and my clients may come to our
area knowing little to nothing about Lake Travis. I often take
them out on our boat and on a tour of the city. This is not just
business for me, I develop true relationships and more often
than not my clients become my friends.”

Meet Diglet!
“He is a spotted juliani pig and is 1 year and 3 months. He is
the size of a medium sized dog and weighs 40 pounds. His
favorite foods are broccoli, bananas, and chicken. His hobbies
include eating, cuddling, roaming the neighborhood, and more
eating! He knows how to come, sit, turn, and stand on command (only if you have a delicious treat for him). And yes, it’s
true, pigs are very smart!” Because Aaron is allergic to dogs and
cats, Natalie’s desire for a pet led Aaron to Texas Tiny Pigs, a
farm in Waco that specializes in pet pigs. Diglet loves music
(“when he hears music he wags his tail like a happy puppy”),
hates anything bright yellow (“he will squeal and run the other
way with his tail between his legs”), and knows how to tell his
owners when he has to go to the bathroom (“he lets us know
when he needs to go outside by rubbing his nose on the backyard door”)
It’s no surprise that Diglet is famous in the Overlook – he’s
hard to ignore! And if you find yourself one day face to face
with Diglet, Natalie offers this advice. “He’s really shy at first,
but if you have fruits or vegetables, he’ll warm up to you!”

OF THE
The weather is beginning to warm up and with all of the fun pool parties, vacations, and time at the lake,
learning how to swim and stay safe in the water is important for all young children. Though parents want
their children to learn how to swim, we find some children can be nervous about participating in swim
lessons due to fear of the water or becoming hurt in the pool.
So how can we help young children to overcome a fear of water and
swimming? Here are some tips from our school swim instructors:
Consider taking your child to meet the instructor and see the swimming facility prior to
the first lesson.
Do your research! Children love seeing examples of the skills they will be learning! Watch
some video examples of professional swimmers or visit a swim lesson.

most recently they put in new mulch. The design works well with

Laurie Dorsett, The Blind Lady
Just when I think I have heard every blind joke in the book,
someone comes up with something new. I'm often asked, "How
can you see to measure those windows?" Ha! It’s a great ice
breaker though, and I have never regretted the choice of my
business name.
I started in 1989 off South Lamar and had a retail office location there for about 15 years. Then in 2005, the building I was
leasing was sold and later that year I moved to Port Aransas
and began working with a builder there. I commuted every few
weeks to my Austin customers and found there is a huge crossover from Port Aransas to Austin and San Antonio. Many of
my customers owned homes in both locations, and I installed
window coverings for both, until I returned here and settled
into Bee Cave, where I have friends and family.
I was born in Austin and grew up in Westlake Hills, so I have
seen a lot of changes in the area. Some of them I like and some I
do not... but I don't really have much choice, so I try to embrace
the changes and welcome newcomers to the area from all over
the country. One of my favorite things about my job is meeting
new people just moving here. I get to learn a LOT about other
parts of the country through conversations with customers while
assisting them in their window covering choices, and I love seeing
various styles and decor in new and existing homes.
When I started 25 years ago, the choices were simple...mini blinds,
vertical blinds, what color do you want? Now there are so many
products available in window treatments, it helps to have a guide
to navigate the territory. This is my specialty, and I am here to assist
you with your choices! I am often asked how my prices compare,
and I can honestly say that I stay very price competitive and can
beat DIY pricing except I will include installation and service. Otherwise I wouldn't have been able to stay in business all these years.
Through the years I have completed many flooring projects on
my own, and recently decided to team up with Chase Flooring.
I am currently working at the Chase Flooring Bee Cave location. Leslie Bell, a resident of Rough Hollow is the Showroom
assistant. Either of us would be happy to see you at our showroom, or I can provide Shop At Home Service. It’s a great place
for one stop shopping for flooring and window treatments!

Meet The Hanly Family
Rough Hollow does many things right,
but for Josh and Shannon Hanly, the
combination of the beautiful hill country
and incredible people compelled them to
make Rough Hollow home. They moved
from Southern California 7 months ago,
settled in Canyon Ridge, and immediately took to their new surroundings.

Ladybird Lake to kayak. Water activities
in particular are a focus for them. As
Shannon points out, “we came from the
beach in California, so that was a big
adjustment for us here. Our kids LOVE
the water. We have improvised here by
playing in all the pools and water park
areas.” Needless to say the pool at Highland Village is one of their favorite amenities of Rough Hollow!
Josh and Shannon met in San Luis
Obispo while in college, and for the last
13 years Josh has worked in the lending
industry, currently a Sr. loan officer with
United Lending. Before moving to Texas,
Shannon owned an alternative kids clothing line called “Noah’s Arcade,” heading
up the sales and marketing efforts. When
they’re not out with the kids, the two of
them enjoy going to music festivals (they
love acoustic), cooking, and hanging out
with their friends/neighbors. In fact, they
love having people over for dinners, especially when there’s “good food, music and
good wine!” Their one rule, “you must be
fun to attend!”
Eight-year-old Kaeden loves “swimming,
soccer, school, collecting minerals/rocks,
riding his bike, science, building stuff,
eating, and minecraft!” Three-year-old
London loves “dance class, swimming,
singing, dressing like a princess, painting
and being silly!” There’s a family movie
night once a week that has a “build your
own sundae” element to it, and the family
dinner of choice is “Tacos!!!!”
The Hanlys appreciate all of the community events in the neighborhood, both for
the kids and themselves. They make a point
to go to the Rough Hollow events when
their schedule allows, and they are also
involved in the Rough Hollow boot camp
and book club. Shannon helps out with the
school activities at Serene Hills and the preschool at Lakeway Church, even substitute
teaching there on occasion.
Asked about their favorite part of Rough
Hollow, Josh sums it up by saying, “We
are surrounded by the beautiful Hill
Country and scenic views, but it’s mostly
the residents. We have never been so
blessed to have so many great friends in
our neighborhood.”

What to Look for When Buying a Boat
By Martin Boyer, resident
1. Determine the boating needs for the
people who will be enjoying the boat.
Will you be fishing, skiing, wakeboarding, wake surfing or just taking
a pleasant lake cruise?
2. Decide on where you plan on using
the boat. Will you stay at your home
lake or travel to the various lakes here
in central Texas. If you plan on going
to the Texas Coast, let your dealer
know so he can find one that will
hold up well in both.
3. Come up with a reasonable budget. If financing, decide how much
you can put down and how much
per month you want to invest. Boat
loans can extend out 120-180 months
which helps make the payment more
affordable. Don’t forget about boat
insurance and where you plan to store
it. Most trailer manufacturers offer
fold-away trailers to help you fit the
boat in the garage.
4. Get pre-approved for a boat loan.
Boat dealers are usually set up to offer
a variety of loan programs with excellent rates to fit any budget. Don’t be
afraid to allow the dealer to take care
of your financing. If not, many banks
and credit unions offer pre approved
loans and allow the customer to go
pick one out without the need for
timely application process.
5. Decide on a new boat vs. pre-owned.
New boats come with complete factory warranties and pre-owns don’t. As
expected, used boats are substantially
less but one must consider potential
for unexpected repairs or the need to
update maintenance.
6. Shows, Sales, Rebates & Incentives
– Find out the current incentives.
Many manufacturers or dealers offer
special incentives or rebates to move
out existing inventories or even consider a leftover model. These come
with new boat warranties and you can
save a bunch.
7. Most boaters get 2 foot-itis. Think
about going with the next size up to
keep from needing to trade up which
can be costly during the first few
years. Concentrate on getting the
boat right the first time.
8. Go shopping! Part of the fun of
owning a boat is the great time you’ll
have shopping. The internet is a great
tool but don’t discount the benefit
of seeing the boat and dealership in
person. Boaters are always in a good
mood when looking for a recreational
product, and the dealers enjoy the
interaction and relationships gained.
9. Once you’ve found the perfect boat
and feel comfortable with the seller,
arrange for a test drive or on-thewater orientation. Most sellers will
agree to the test ride; especially if the
price, financing etc. are all complete.
All boats don’t ride the same and they
definitely look bigger in showroom or
on the lot.
10. Finally, tell everyone about your new
boat and make plans for years of fun
on the water! You’ve just invested in
a lifetime of memories. There is no
better way to enjoy life with family
and friends than in the boat of your
dreams.

boat, contact Martin @ Austin Boats and
Motors at 512-263-8311.

YOUNG
ACHIEVER
improved a lot and I’d have to say that it’s solemnly because of
my recent art teacher, Amber Forgey. She’s really good at sitting
down with you and guiding you step by step when you want to
start using a different medium. And not only that, but she has
definitely showed me that art isn’t easy, and that if you want
something to be perfect you have to work hard for it. Also, she’s
the first teacher I’ve had who didn’t only care about my art but
about me as a person. She sees us as friends and shares all her
wisdom and knowledge with us. She’s very straight forward and
I find that her opinion really matters to me.
Meet Araceli Irus
At first glance, sixteen year old Araceli Irus is a typical junior at
Lake Travis High School. But what sets this Rough Hollow resident apart from other students in the community is her emerging artistic talent for creating unique penciled portraits. In fact,
she recently started a business sketching photos that customers
send her, advertising it on her website, letmeartyou.com. Araceli
was gracious enough to answer a few questions about her experiences, inspirations, and future plans.
What are your plans after high school?
That’s a terrifying question, but all I can see myself doing is
something that makes me happy and that I enjoy, so I’m looking into going to college for Art, obviously, and honestly, I’d
like to do something that will both support me financially and
make me love going to work; so I’m looking into advertising or
graphic design.
How did you get started drawing?
Drawing is something that I’ve always loved doing since I was
little, and I guess that as I started taking classes and seeing just
how far my ability stretched – and where I could take it – was
when I realized it was what I wanted to do, what I was passionate about.
What do you enjoy about it?
I’d have to say that my favorite thing to draw is people, and that’s
because faces are special, and unique, and we all have little marks
that make us who we are – like the way our eyes crease when we
smile, or where our freckles are, or even the way our mouth curves
when we laugh – all of these are traits that no one can take away
from you, and I love noticing that on people, I love having to
draw what makes people special. That’s why I do Realism, because
you tell the truth, and you don’t leave anything out.
Tell us something you achieved or some highlights of your
experience so far?
My freshman year of High School I was introduced to VASE,
Visual Art Scholastics Event, an art competition for artists in
the state of Texas, and even though I had never thought of art as
something I competed for, it quickly brought out my competitive side. Even though to me my art isn’t something I need to
show off to anyone, it was nice to see that I really did have talent. Last year, the piece I entered to VASE went on to state and
then medaled there. This year, I entered a scratch board piece and
it went on to state, so I’m really hoping I do well. This year I also
entered Scholastics, which is another art contest, and I got a Gold
Key for a prisma color piece I did. And this is my first year in an
Art Portfolio class, meaning that by the end of the year I’ll have
a complete portfolio of my work -24 pieces- to show to college
boards and start applying.

Is there something that makes you unique in this activity (a
specific strength or quality you bring)?
I would say one of my strengths is that I’m a really fast worker,
and I’m very grateful for that. I think also something that sets
me apart from most artists is that I always find I have a unique
technique when going about my work, all the way from the
strokes I make when using color pencil, or charcoal, to the
things that get me to start a drawing. For example most people
would start off a piece with the easiest thing on the page; I
think it’s necessary to start off with the eyes and nose, because
no matter how early on into the project you are, if you give them
those features, you makes your piece come to life.
How do you keep a balance between your art, school, and
other activities in your life?
Sometimes it honestly feels like I don’t, but I find that if I can
keep myself on track with everything that I have going on, and
have the help and support from my family and friends, I can
easily get myself together. It also really helps to know what’s
really important, if you know what you want in life, and where
you’re headed it’s possible – not easy – to keep a good balance.
Name someone you admire. What makes them special and
how have they motivated you?
I have always had a special connection with my art teachers, but
these last 3 years of High School I’ve noticed that my skills have

children's health:
5 WAYS PARENTS CAN HELP CHILDREN LEAD HEALTHIER LIFESTYLES
Believe it or not, you impart a legacy of health to your children that goes well beyond
the genes you give them. You also pass along health beliefs and model health-related choices. here are 5 tips that will set your kids up on a path towards a healthy life. 1. INSTILL A SENSE OF WONDER ABOUT THE BODY. Many adults
fear and distrust their bodies. They believe that the body is fragile, and illness is just around the corner. The myth that you will
catch a cold if you go outside without a coat persists. Your kids
are listening when you look in the mirror and say to no one in
particular, “I’m so fat.”
The truth is your body is the most miraculous mechanical system on the planet. Cuts heal without a single thought or action
on your part. Comment on your child’s amazing body. “Wow,
that cut healed in no time!” Remind your child how great it is to
have eyes and kidneys and hearts that work so well. 2. BECOME A STUDENT OF THE HUMAN BODY WITH YOUR CHILD. Your kids will come to you with questions about how their bodies work. It can be uncomfortable for both you and your child
when you don’t have the answers. This discomfort can teach
children that they should avoid questions about how their bodies work, which may, in part, explain why parents themselves are
reluctant to ask doctors embarrassing questions. 3. TEACH YOUR KIDS TO LISTEN TO THEIR BODIES. Often it feels
as if adults are rewarded for ignoring or overcoming the signals
from their bodies. Health is maintained when you know the
signals that suggest your body is out of balance and respond in a
timely manner when your body indicates it needs something.
4. MODEL HEALTHY EATING HABITS. Childhood obesity is a
growing problem. Talk with your kids about good food choices
and bad ones. Encourage them to ask themselves, “What kind
of food is my body hungry for right now?” and “Am I full?” even
if there’s still food on the plate. Pay attention to see if your child
is a grazer or a 3-squares-a-day kid and set an eating schedule
that reflects their style.

5. REWARD HEALTH RATHER THAN ILLNESS. Some of my best childhood memories come from times when
I was sick. In an effort to ease my pain, my mother unwittingly
rewarded illness by lavishing attention on me, delivering endless
bowls of ice cream and playing games with me. Who wouldn’t
want to be sick?
Instead, lavish attention on your kids when they’re well. While
you don’t want to punish your kids for being sick, consider which
privileges of health should be withdrawn during sick days.
When you instill in your children a sense of pride, wonder and
respect for their bodies, you have given them the foundation of
health.
