Continuing to implement the recommendations of the CSI Strategic Club Assessment Report, the
Board held a Retreat on October 23rd and finalized the Vision and Mission Statements for the Club
and prepared an outline of our Strategic Plan. The foundation of our decision making process was
the membership surveys from 2010, 2012, and the 2014 seven Focus Groups’ responses from the CSI
Report. Reaching a consensus on the Vision and Mission Statements shows that the Board is on the
‘same page” and proceeding in the same direction.

The Vision Statement identifies what the Club is all about; its purpose, as well as where the Club is
heading. The Vision the Board adopted is:
“Provide an exceptional golf experience unsurpassed in San Diego.”
The Mission Statement defines what basic services are provided. The Mission the Board adopted is to:




Maintain a National Championship caliber golf course.
Promote a community atmosphere amongst members that creates enduring friendships.
Provide personalized service that exceeds member expectations every day.
Make strategic decisions that enhance the club and protect its future.

The Strategic Plan is board-based and conceptual in nature and requires long-range visionary thinking. The core of the plan
is to “Retain and Grow the Membership” by achieving the following:
 Advance Club Governance by revising the By-laws; creating an operational policy manual; and revising the Board policy
manual.
 Improve Operations through internal management adjustments and training and leadership for all employees.
 Enhance Members Satisfaction by improved communication and transparency to members and providing exceptional
service to members and guests.

Also, as many other clubs have done in the country, the Board approved wearing denim in all areas of the Clubhouse. The

only caveat is distressed denim with holes or torn denim will not be allowed.
Finally, please thoroughly read the Green Committee report on the new Board policy regarding limited- flight golf balls being placed on the range. They are for big hitters only when they are hitting long distance clubs and will affect less than five
percent of our members. As you will see, it is a safety issue for our employees and members. Thank you for your cooperation and understanding.

Limited Flight (Yellow) Balls Required for Long Hitters
Hundreds of range balls are landing in the maintenance yard every month and many balls are flying down the left side of the range past the fence line. More than one worker has been hit and
there has been damage in the yard. Just in the last week a windshield was broken on a greens
keeper's truck that was in the yard. Also, members in the 9th fairway have nearly been struck by long balls in recent weeks. The cost to move the poles back and to raise them is beyond what we can spend right now, so the
Board has taken action similar to other private clubs that don’t have long ranges, including La Jolla CC and Brentwood.

gear up for 2015. We are currently enhancing our marketing materials, which will have a big
impact on membership recruitment. Spring and summer months are typically the most active
months for recruiting new members so we want to be ready to put our best foot forward.
Two new members were approved at the October Board meeting;
DID YOU KNOW?
In the past two years, 40 of our
new members joined the club
after using a Guest Voucher
Effective as soon as the quality Wilson limited flight balls arrive in the next few weeks, any player who possibly
can carry the fence with a longer metal wood or long iron must use limited flight (yellow) balls when hitting those
clubs. The yellow balls will be placed near the pyramids of normal white range balls. Signage will be placed at
the driving range and a copy of the policy will be presented to known big hitters by our pro shop staff. The total
cost to the club for this solution is approximately $2,000.
We expect cooperation of all our big hitters, but there will be penalties for non-compliance. On the first reported
incident of a big hitter not using yellow balls with long clubs, the privilege of using the driving range will be suspended for 30 days. On a second report, the result will be a 30-day suspension from SDCC. The Board has instructed the pro shop to enforce the policy with zero tolerance.
This new policy will affect less than 5% of our membership (wouldn’t we middle-aged members love to have that
kind of distance?), but we do request that members who observe violations inform the violator immediately and
report it to the pro shop.
Trey Croom, a former
Naval Officer originally
from South Carolina.
Preview Jr. Executive I
The new yellow ball flight performance is similar to our white ball up to about 175 yards, at which point it tends to
fall abruptly. Big hitters currently are unable to determine the distance or carry of their shots because all they see
is the ball hitting the fence or flying into the maintenance yard. The change to limited flight balls will be one of
feel rather than getting information on their distances. This is not a big trade-off for the danger that it eliminates.
By Jack Aldrich
October is a very busy month for the maintenance crew at SDCC. On October 13th we began our
greens aeration process that went very well. In fact, as I write this article fourteen days later I can
tell you that the greens have recovered as fast as they ever have.
We also have aerated and sanded all the tees as well as over seeded the clubhouse and golf course
areas.
Thank you in advance for your anticipated cooperation.
Board of Directors
The first of a series of “Town Hall” meetings on the 2017 U S Women’s Amateur Championship will
be held in the Bay Room on Wednesday, November 19th from 6:30pm to 7:30pm. The meeting will
include a slide presentation, an update on the latest developments and an opportunity to ask questions.
Your Board of Directors will be meeting that same evening until 6pm and there will be an opportunity
to mingle with them and other members before or after the Women’s Amateur meeting.
All members are invited to attend the Town Hall meeting and encouraged to enjoy dinner at the Club before or after.
Please contact Jodie Simer at 619-422-8895 if you plan to attend the meeting and/or to make dinner reservations.
Michael Benjamin, who after playing
his membership round with Bob
Lamkin Jr., switched from Golf Pride
to Lamkin golf grips!
Michael’s wife, Colleen plays as well.

One special project that we completed in
October involved removing the railroad tie
stairs on number 14 tee. The pictures illustrate
the process. Once the ties were removed we
graded and sodded the area. Six openings were
created in the split rail fence to allow for six
different traffic areas leading up to the tee. In
my opinion this project was a success and once again, illustrating some of the talent we have
on our maintenance crew. A special thank you goes out to Darrell Lewis, Mauricio
Leon and Carmelo Quinones for a job well done.

I
cannot believe I have been lucky enough to be employed here for two months. Already!
It seems like yesterday I was anxiously sitting in my office utilizing Skype to interview
our new Controller, Dave Wright (who has been a tremendous addition by the way). And
now I write this article from my office in beautiful San Diego.
I couldn’t have asked for a better script to write my way through this beginning. Your gracious and warm welcoming of my arrival has been nothing short of amazing. And our team members have
been more than receptive to all of my crazy questions and different ideas.
As we work towards our future success, I hope you have begun to see subtle changes in the way we operate. I
wish we could make drastic positive changes overnight, but I have found in my brief tenure on this planet that
this isn’t always achievable, nor does it always work. Therefore, I have begun changes behind the scenes that
will lay the foundation for more noticeable changes. Sixty days of our 90-day plan have seen accomplishments such as hiring a new Controller, hiring a new Accounting Manager, developing new job descriptions,
beginning work on a club-wide training manual, developing new policies to provide better club governance,
revamping our financial reporting procedures, creating a new financial forecast model, establishing a biweekly department head staff meeting and planning brand new social events for 2015, including parlaying my
passion for wine into the mix. Not to mention embracing a new club governance model complete with addressing our current by-laws and developing a new mission statement and vision for the entire club.
So today I ask for your patience and understanding as I learn more about our club culture. I promise that my
methodical methods will pay dividends shortly.
Please don’t hesitate to contact me if there is anything I can do to make your club experience more memorable. We are always happy to serve you.

Men’s Club Championship
Congratulations to Jimmy Harris on winning his first SDCC Men’s Club Championship.
Jimmy is one of the finest amateurs in all of San Diego County and finally found time in his
busy schedule to compete in probably the most competitive club championship in Southern
California. He beat Scott Stewart, Howie Knodt, Brent Lawrence and finally Gustavo Contreras on his way to
the title. This was the second straight final for Gustavo, falling to Ben Doyle in last year’s final.

Ladies Invitational
The Ladies Club had a wonderful 2014 Tradition on October 1st, 2nd and 3rd. It started on Wednesday afternoon with an exciting par three tournament and concluded after two competitive days of eclectic golf with a
fabulous luncheon and wonderful prizes. Congratulations to the entire Tradition Committee who worked so
hard to make it such a tremendous success.
November Schedule
Although November is typically a quiet month for golf activity, there are two events to mark on your calendars. Friday, November 7th is the Fall Mixer which begins at 3:00pm. It is nine holes of golf followed by a
wine tasting afterward. It is only $15 per person and should be fun for all. There will be a great selection of
wines and tasty appetizers all included in the $15 fee.
Friday, November 14th and Saturday, November 15th is our Annual Men’s Match Play Member Guest. It is
two days of golf pitting you and your guest against five other teams in your flight for nine-hole matches. Each
flight will have a top point winner and these flight winners will square off on Saturday afternoon in a derby
shootout. There will be lots of cheer and comradery for two fun packed days. Sign up early because this event
will sell out and you do not want to miss it. The cost is $250 for both you and your guest.
Thanksgiving Day
Thanksgiving Day, the club is open for golf. There will be a single shotgun at 9:00 am for those wishing to
burn some calories before the Big Dinner. The Pro Shop and Bag Room will close at 3:00 pm and the driving
range is available until 1:30 pm. Come down and join the fun at 9:00 am. We’ll have you home in time for
your Turkey Feast.

Our annual year-end wrap tournament was held on
October 10th. We had a good turn out of about 27
players. This annual event is for both Golden and
Silver Team members and includes cash prizes and a
steak lunch. The winners of this year’s event was the
team of Ellis Smith, Pete Williamson, Ira Levine and
Warren Shafer. Everyone enjoy the day. Below I have recapped this
year and taken a look forward to 2015.
2014 Golden and Silver Year End Summary
Golden: We had 43 active players on the roster in 2015. Our record 5 wins and 9 losses for last place in the standings for the Western Division. Western Division winner Lomas Santa Fe won with a record of 9 wins and 5 losses.
Silver: We had 37 active players on the roster this year. Our record: 5 wins 7 losses and 2 ties. Fairbanks CC won
our division and the league title beating Stone Ridge in the finals.
2015 Year ahead
Golden: In 2015, we will be playing 4 divisional matches and 3 non-divisional matches. Golf Club of California is
scheduled to join the League bringing the total teams to 12 or 6 in each division. Under the new schedule we will
be playing every club at least every other year. 2015 clubs we are schedule to play are: La Costa, Rancho Santa
Fe, Crosby, La Jolla, CC of RB, Morgan Run and Bernardo Heights. The proposed schedule also rotates the time
we play the same club to different months on a set schedule.
Silver: In 2015, we will be playing: The Farms, Bear Creek, The Crosby, Vista Valley, Del Mar, Stone Ridge,
and Fairbanks Ranch.
Sign-up for the 2015 teams will be e-mailed to all current players in December and due in early January.
In 2015, I am scheduled to take over as the League President of the San Diego County Golden Seniors. With those
additional duties, Mark Marshall has agreed to take on the duties of Golden and Silver Captain for our club. Norm
Peck and Dave Rowlands will be assisting Mark as Co-Captains. I know they will do a fine job in 2015!

It’s hard to believe that the year is almost over. We’ve had a great year and yet there’s more to come!
October brought us The Tradition, and thanks to Tess Franklin and her committee for yet another outstanding tournament. Also, thanks to the SDCC staff and employees; we couldn’t do it without your
help as well! The weather was great and the golf course in wonderful condition! Our guests enjoy
playing our course, bunkers and all!
Our Halloween Scramble is always a special event at the club and kudos to Noreen Tasto, Connie DeWerd and their
committee for chairing another fun day of golf, fun costumes and wonderful food!
November brings our Turkey Shoot and our last guest day of the year which is our 4th annual “Tee it up for the
Cure”. It looks like we’ll have a great turnout with all the ladies in pink!
Our new officers for 2015 have been elected and will be installed at our Christmas Scramble and Luncheon on December 9th. As you know, our ladies’ organization is run by volunteers who graciously give their time for the good
of the game of golf and to ensure the success of the WGA. I certainly encourage you to volunteer your time in 2015
whether it be chairing a guest day, helping with a tournament, or whatever your interest and skills might be!
Thanksgiving is right around the corner, and I want to wish each and every one of you a very
Happy Thanksgiving whether you’re staying home, or spending it with family or friends.

Once again our annual three day

Clauson, Diane Marshall & Mary Davis
was spectacular as well as a whole lotta
fun from the Par Three Tournament the

the grille after lunch the third day! A

Note: Tess’ guest Camille Medina had
her 1st ever hole-in-one on #11 in
Wednesday’s practice round. It was duly celebrated at dinner that night!
Denim Attire and The Clubhouse
Your Board of Directors had many high-level discussions at its recent Board Retreat to
establish a long term strategic plan for the club. Growing and retaining membership
was at the core of the conversation. As our club continues to get younger and the area’s
culture gets more casual, the Board felt it was time to address denim attire in the clubhouse. Therefore, membership will be allowed to wear denim clothing at all times in the
clubhouse only. Frayed, torn, distressed or tattered denim of any kind will not be permitted. Members and guests on the golf course are still prohibited from wearing denim
of any kind.
Clubhouse
Clothes are to be neat, clean, in good repair, and in good taste. Tailored, square bottom
casual shirts, designed to be worn outside of trousers, may be un-tucked. Denim is
acceptable only in the clubhouse and must not have any signs of being frayed, worn,
tattered, or torn.
Gentlemen will remove hats, caps, or other headgear while in the Clubhouse. Shoes
must be worn at all times. Sandals are appropriate footwear for the Golf Grille and
outdoor terrace only.
Unacceptable attire for the golf course, practice areas, and clubhouse (with the
exception of the locker and exercise rooms) includes, but is not limited to the following:
 Athletic, gym, cycling, tennis, or running shorts; camouflage clothing, swim
wear, sports jerseys, short shorts, cut-offs, tennis dresses, halter tops, and
midriff blouses.
• Cargo pants with baggy/expandable side or rear pockets.
• Flip-flops
Upon observation of a dress code violation, the member will be spoken to privately at a
convenient time as to not embarrass him/her or guests of the table. Subsequently, a letter will be sent to the member and a note in his/her member file. Further violations
will be dealt with on a case-by-case basis.
Please feel free to let the Board or I know of any concerns or questions you may have
regarding this new policy. We will be happy to assist you.
Thank you in advance of respecting the club’s policies as we strive towards our vision of
“providing an exceptional golf experience unsurpassed in San Diego”.

convenient time as to not embarrass him/her or guests of the table. Subsequently, a letter will be sent to the member and a note in his/her member file. Further violations

I
cannot believe I have been lucky enough to be employed here for two months.

Two new members were approved at the October Board meeting;

One special project that we completed in
October involved removing the railroad tie
stairs on number 14 tee. The pictures illustrate
the process. Once the ties were removed we
graded and sodded the area. Six openings were
created in the split rail fence to allow for six
different traffic areas leading up to the tee. In
my opinion this project was a success and once again, illustrating some of the talent we have
on our maintenance crew. A special thank you goes out to Darrell Lewis, Mauricio
Leon and Carmelo Quinones for a job well done.

 Enhance Members Satisfaction by improved communication and transparency to members and providing exceptional
service to members and guests.

percent of our members. As you will see, it is a safety issue for our employees and members. Thank you for your cooperation and understanding.
