Frank Ocean – channel ORANGE Frank Ocean should be on every one of your iPods. The R&B artist, who you might recognize from Kanye West and Jay-Z’s “No Church in the Wild,” gives a really great show through all 17 tracks on channel ORANGE. The album’s songs are as enjoyable on their own as they are played back-to-back. Check out “Thinkin Bout You” and “Pink Matter (feat. Andre 3000).” Good Old War – Come Back As Rain 6. Following a bit of a sophomore slump, Good Old War springs right Ten Stories follows the surviving back into the tight harmonies and animals of a travelling circus after acoustic sing-a-longs that made me an ill-fated train crash. (lowercase f, period) follows up their baroque Aim and Ignite with an accessible sophomore record inspired by the music of hip-hop acts like Kanye West. You wouldn’t be doing this album the justice it deserves if all you’ve heard off of it are singles “We Are Young” (boooring) and “Some Nights.” The album is an incredibly cohesive unit with reoccurring lyrical motifs and refrains that need to be experienced within the context of the whole record. Check out the songs “Some Nights” and “Stars.” be a fair indicator of how much I enjoyed it. The follow-up to 2010’s My Dinosaur Life is a subtle creature. Go is an incredibly organic, introspective record that taps into some of the darkest reaches of lyricist Justin Pierre’s mind. The overall effect is pretty gripping. Check out the songs “True Romance” and “Happy Anniversary.” Lana Del Rey – Born to Die 9. ord. The Mountain Goats – Transcendental Youth 11. John Darnielle is one of the best lyricists in folk music—it’s a simple fact. Transcendental Youth offers a dark, fantastical set of narratives that any fan of music can enjoy. Check out the song “Cry for Judas.” Right Away, Great Captain! – The Church of the Good Thief 12. Andy Hull caps off his three-part trilogy about a sailor off at sea on a solemn note. A must have for fans of folk music or Manchester Orchestra. Check out the song “Blame.” Despite coming out in January, I didn’t listen to Born to Die until the autumn. Any misconceptions I had about it were instantly vanquished. Lana Del Rey is super fun. Check out the song “Million Dollar Man.” Justin Bieber – Believe 10. Jack White – Blunderbuss 13. A must have for fans of The White Stripes. If you weren’t pulled in by Jack White’s other projects, this record is for you. Classic White Stripes rock and roll with a hearty helping of the blues. Check out the song “Love Interruption.” Miniature Tigers – Mia Pharaoh 14. Shifting styles this year, Miniature Tigers makes an excellent synth-pop record. Check out the song “Female Doctor.” The Elwins – And I Thank You 15. The Elwins were a lucky find of mine this year. They’re a harmonic little indie rock band. Check out the song “Stuck in the Middle.” Motion City Soundtrack – Go 8. I initially checked out this album on a Go might be my least favorite Motion whim, and I’m glad I did. Despite City Soundtrack album, but it still some really unfortunate guest verslands itself at 9 on my list. Frank and Phil: We sponsor various activities to assist freshman, including orientation before the start of the school year and midterm study help. Talon: What’s the best about being part of this organization? Frank and Phil: The best part about being a Link Leader is knowing that you make a difference in the lives of freshman. Talon: Provide a funny story of something that happened at one of your functions: Frank and Phil: At training for freshman orientation over the summer, Frank Reddy spilled my water on me while I was drinking it. To get back at him, I squeezed his water while he was drinking it and it got all over his chest. I then thought we were even. However my adversary did not. At the time I had long hair, and Frank, recognizing my weakness, placed his chewed gum onto my head and tangled it into my hair. Luckily, I got it out using vegetable oil.
