Off Shelf the Sum m er 2016 Newsletter of the Pasadena Public Library End of an Era Library L ib Director Jan Sanders announces her retirement As you have no doubt noted in the header, I As have announced that I’m retiring at the end ha of August. It has been my honor and joy to of sserve se e as Director of Libraries for the City of Pasadena for the past 11 years. Never have Pa P a worked with a finer staff or community, or Iw oone on n so dedicated to the work of the library. From FFr r my first day, I knew that Pasadena uusers us s loved their libraries and wanted them to continue successfully. Staff here, many of whom are long-long-term employees, share that view of success and are endlessly loyal. I salute them. have so many programs in a given year, it’s hard to keep track of them all. And the attendance! If you’ve tried to attend a preschool storytime at a branch, or a Zumba class, or a presentation by a distinguished speaker at the Donald Wright Auditorium, you know the fans that show up. And that is exactly what we SHOULD be doing: making our services and facilities integral to the life of our city. During my tenure, we have seen libraries undergo monumental changes. We no longer serve as a simple depository for books and information. We have expanded to be the hub of community life, the center for conversation and ideas, and the spot for creation to occur. • Staff development: We implemented an all-staff training day, allowing for learning and reconnection for staff. We supported six California Leadership participants either as Eureka! Scholars or California Leadership Scholars, stretching over the past seven years. You won’t see me marking great strides in the usual “numbers” around the library: our circulation figures haven’t yet reached the 2 million mark that I yearned for; the number of library card holders stays pretty constant from year-to-year, always a strong percentage of population; and our budget holds solid. We haven’t suffered huge cuts, but neither have we enjoyed windfalls. Where we HAVE seen terrific growth is in the participation of our community. We All Pasadena Public Libraries will be CLOSED in observance of Independence Day Monday, July 4 Here are more “milestones” that come to mind as I consider my term here. • We enjoyed rousing success at passing the extension of the library parcel tax in 2008 by an 80.4% vote, keeping our libraries financially solid until 2023. • We assisted the Library Foundation in presenting a fundraising gala to pay for the south façade restoration and bringing some 300 people into the library for food, drinks and friendship. In addition, we had numerous staff present bestpr ra practice programs. • We hosted One City, One Story’s 14th year. The program was on-going and healthy when I arrived (Kite Runner had just been discussed). But now, it’s an annual tradition, bringing in volunteer selectors from throughout the community, monetary support from The Friends of the Pasadena Public Library, and an impressive list of authors. Which title did you enjoy most? 2006 – Kindred; 2007 – The Distant Land of My Father; 2008 – Easter Island; 2009 – The Hummingbird’s Daughter; 2010 – Gardens of Water; 2011 – Mudbound; 2012 – People of the Book; 2013 – The Age of Miracles; 2014 – Mr. Penumbra’s 24-Hour Bookstore; 2015 – The Book of Unknown Americans, and 2016 – Orphan Train • We hosted a variety of events celebrating “130 Years of Reading” in 2014, ending with a wildly-successful community fair in October, with nearly 2,000 people on the Central Library lawn! • Pasadena became the first community EVER (before or since) to produce two presidents for the Public Library Association ooff A America, when former meeri m eriica c ,w wh hen hen e I ffollowed o lo ol lowe weed fo orm rmeerr Library Director Luis Herrera and took the gavel in 2007. • Community members stepped up to form Friends of the Library Associates groups at La Pintoresca Branch, Linda Vista Branch, Hastings Ranch Branch and San Rafael Branch. Many have worked effectively to hold d fundraising events, resulting in wonderful additions and improvements. • The Library Department of the City of Pasadena has worked collaboratively with other city departments, namely Health, Human Services and Recreation; Water and Power; Planning; City Clerks’ Office; Housing; Police; Fire and the training arm of the Human Resources Department. The neighborhood libraries have been used much more effectively to dissemination city information. • We’ve made better use of space at Central Library, opening g Teen Central in 2011 and creating the Studio on 4th as a production/creation space in 2015. • We welcomed the Pasadena Garden Club to celebrate and showcase their 100th Anniversary Show, REFLECTIONS: A CENTENNIAL CELEBRATION, in April, 2016. Hundreds of citizens, who might never have otherwise entered the building, came to view the displays and are now aware of the shining facility that is the Central Library. • In 2015, I challenged the staff to enroll 5,000 people in the Summer Reading Club, at which point I would dye my hair blue! While we didn’t quite make the number, it was fun to go aahead heead h a aand ndd bbecome e om ec ome me “the director with the turquoise locks” for a while. And the list goes on and on. We’ve done much in these short 11 years, and much more is waiting to happen. The Pasadena Public Library is not just about books—or even mainly about books. We are about connecting with you, our users, and about ensuring that we stay relevant and useful, a leader in library services. I’ve watched libraries go from institutions oonce-threatened by the onset of paperback books in a hardback world, t an institution that must make its way through the electronic jungle to tthat provides a full-blown functioning computer in nearly th eeveryone’s pocket. What a ride! I look forward to staying connected with PPL as a faithful user. I’m not leaving town, and I certainly won’t stop llilibrary i uusing this library. I can’t wait to see what’s next! Central Library Façade Restoration We are pleased to finally be able to provide you with an update on Central Library’s facade restoration. Given the historic status of the building, much care, thought and deliberation was given on how to best move the project forward. The Public Works Department concluded that breaking the project into two phases was the best approach. Phase I consisted of painting the building’s south facade. Phase II will be restoration of the great arched windows and surrounding stonework. Phase I was completed in December. Access was a challenge. A large lift was brought in to the interior patios to reach the uppermost regions of the facade. By using a lift, the roof was left untouched, preventing damage to the tiles. Phase II required a comprehensive bid process. Consultant ONYX Architects was selected by the Public Works Department to guide the city on historic restoration. The Pasadena firm has extensive historic restoration experience, including city projects. Its recent La Casita del Arroyo project resulted in the city receiving a historic restoration award. ONYX will assist the city in drafting the specifications for the remaining work, selecting the contractor and overseeing construction. The restoration work is scheduled to be completed in December. We want to take this opportunity to thank you for your gifts in making this restoration possible. All Pasadena Public Library programs and events listed in this newsletter are free and open to the public. Our programs and events are extremely popular. It has a flawed hero (Pete Rose). It has a patriotic hero (Ted Williams). It has hubris (Roger Clemens). It has a colossal failure (“Casey at the Bat”). It has a symbol of America’s greatest tragedy Ross Altman – racism – and our determination to overcome it (Jackie Robinson). It has comedy (“Who’s on First?”). It has poetry (Jim Murray). It has a tragic disease (Lou Gehrig). It has mental illness (Jimmy Piersall). It has a cautionary tale (Mickey Mantle). It has a song (“Take Me Out to the Ball Game”). And above all it has a history. Los Angeles folk singer Ross Altman celebrates them all in his new show, “The National Pastime.” Co-sponsored by the Baseball Reliquary. Come out and play ball! Saturday, June 25 • 2 p.m. • Allendale Summer Reading Kick-off Enjoy an old-fashioned sing-a-long with Theatre Americana. We’ll sing “Take Me Out to the Ball Game” and other favorites. Saturday, June 25 • 3 p.m. • Central Library/Donald Wright Auditorium Jackie Robinson A film by Ken Burns, Sarah Burns and David McMahon. Jack Roosevelt “Jackie” Robinson rose from humble origins to cross baseball’s color line and become one of the most beloved men in America. A fierce integrationist, Robinson used his immense fame to speak out against the discrimination he saw on and off the field, angering fans, the press, and even teammates who had once celebrated him for “turning the other cheek.” After baseball, he was a widelyread newspaper columnist, divisive political activist and tireless advocate for civil rights, who later struggled to remain relevant as diabetes crippled his body and a new generation of leaders set a more militant course for the civil rights movement. (Four-hour movie with one 15-minute intermission) Saturday, July 9 • Central Library/Donald Wright Auditorium 1-5:15 p.m. – Film showing 3-3:15 p.m. – Intermission Classic Films of Mexico Festival/Festival Del Cine Clásico Mexicano Enjoy classic films from the golden age of Mexican cinema, presented in collaboration with the Consulate General of Mexico. Saturday, July 23 2 p.m. The Baseball Reliquary: Shrine of the Eternals 2016 Induction Day Don Newcombe, Bo Jackson and Arnold Hano will be the 18th class of electees to the Shrine of the Eternals, the national organization’s equivalent to the Baseball Hall of Fame. Michael Fallon, a Minnesota-based writer on arts and culture and author of the recently-published book, Dodgerland: Decadent Los Angeles and the 1977-78 Dodgers, will be the keynote speaker. Sunday, July 17 • 2 p.m. Central Library/Donald Wright Auditorium Michael Fallon Dodgerland: Decadent Los Angeles and the 1977-78 Dodgers Dodgerland, written by Michael Fallon, is the story of the memorable 1977-78 Los Angeles Dodgers, as Chavez Ravine began to change, baseball was about to enter a new era, and American culture experienced a shift to the “me” era. Part journalism, part social history, and part straight sportswriting, Dodgerland is told through the lives of four men, each representing different aspects of this L.A. story. Tom Lasorda, the vocal manager of the Dodgers, gives an up-close view of the team’s struggles and triumphs. Tom Fallon, a suburban small-business owner, witnesses the Dodgers’ season and the changes to California’s landscape – physical, social, political, and economic. Tom Wolfe, a chronicler of California’s ever-changing culture, views the events of 1977-78 from his Manhattan writers’ loft. And Tom Bradley, former Los Angeles mayor and the region’s most dominant political figure of that era, gives a glimpse of the wider political, demographic and economic forces that affected the state at the time. The “Boys in Blue” drew baseball’s focus in those two seasons, but the intertwining narratives tell a larger story about California, late 1970s America, and great promise unrealized. Books will be available for sale and signing. Co-sponsored by Baseball Reliquary. Saturday, July 23 • 2 p.m. • Allendale Wagaku Collective Enjoy a reading of The Repayment of the Crane with a musical performance featuring traditional Japanese instruments including the shamisen (three-stringed lute), shakuhachi (end-blown flute), and taiko (drums).
