switches
choosing a movement
Switches can be operated in different ways; hands, head, foot etc. The switch may need a special mounting
system to allow the desired method to be used.
Repeatability - A switch user will have to make a number of switch presses which may take considerable effort.
Outcome - Make sure that the result of their efforts is worthwhile. Remember that there may be easier ways of
doing something rather than struggling to use a switch.
Acceptability - The user’s choice is final.
Access to other activities - The switch position should not obscure the task to be operated and should not get
in the way of daily activities. The user should be able to work the switch and see the activity easily - remember
that it can take some time for them to transfer their attention from the switch to the task. If this takes too long
they may miss the activity.
Ease of use and setting up - A good switch system should be one that takes a minimum amount of time and
effort to set up.

connecting switches to your computer
Some software can be played just by using the space bar or a few other keys on your computer’s keyboard.
This software can also be used with special switches, for children who are unable to use the keyboard. Switches
for this kind of use come in all shapes and sizes.
To connect these switches to the computer you need a “switch interface”. This is a little box with a cable that
normally plugs into your computer’s USB port. The switch interface has about 4 small round sockets. You plug
your switches into these. Simple!
When you press a switch, the interface box makes the computer think that the space bar (or some other key)
is being pressed. So if you run a storybook activity, where normally you would press the space bar to turn the
pages, you can now use a switch to do the same. Interface boxes can be set to behave like different keyboard
keys or even the mouse buttons.
Joycable 2
JoyBox
Switch Interface Pro
The JoyCable allows a quick and easy
way to plug switches into a computer. The
JoyCable plugs into the USB port of your
computer. You can connect one or two
switches, with standard (3.5mm) switch
inputs. No drivers are needed to use the
JoyCable with popular software such as
The Grid 2 or Widgit software.
The JoyBox allows you to plug several
switches into a computer. The JoyBox plugs
into the USB port of your computer. You can
connect from one to twelve switches, using standard (3.5mm) switch inputs.
Connect up to five standard switches. Provides the flexibility of emulating everything
from a single-click to a return. Supports
switch accessible software.
Switch Driver
To use the JoyCable/Joybox with switch
games and other programs that use keyboard keys or mouse clicks as a switch
input, we include ‘Switch Driver’ software
which will convert switch presses into other
signals, such as a keypress or a mouse
click.
22
Features:
For any resource centre, the JoyBox is the
ultimate switch connection device. It allows 8 switches to be connected for any
use, and 4 more switches can be connected for directional control.
The JoyBox can be used with almost all
switch software, including switch games
and communication programs.
You can change what happens when
each switch is pressed, so switches can
provide special functions. For example,
you could have a switch controlling a music player’s play/pause button, perhaps
with another switch to change track.

activities using switch operated devices
Simple switch devices are often used to introduce people to the use of switches. Observation of a child using a
switch with a toy (with a battery adapter) can be sufficient to establish whether or not they have an understanding of cause and effect; that is they are aware that their pressing the switch is actually causing the device to
operate. For some users this may have to be done by allowing them to make switch presses and to gradually
establish a connection between this and their switch presses. However, even the simplest switch toys can be
put to more use by involving the users’ in games based on their use of the switch. This can provide opportunities
to refine their switch operation by developing more control.

How to adapt your
own battery toys

powered toys switch accessible using a Battery Adapter. You will need
to use a toy with a simple ON/OFF

paw’ won’t work.
1. Open the battery compartment
and slide the adapter between the
battery and the connector.
Thomas the Tank Engine
Thomas is controlled by a very easy to use two button infrared remote control which has been
adapted to use two standard switches as well as the remote’s own buttons. It really brings toy
control to a higher level, giving lots of opportunities for choice making and interactive activities.
Pressing one switch or button will cause him to turn on the spot - let go when he is facing the
required direction. Pressing the other will cause him to set off in the direction chosen.
NB: the user needs to hold the switch or button down to have full control.

SmartNav 4 AT
How Do I Click?
SmartNav offers multiple clicking options.
Complete Computer Control
The SmartNav 4 AT is a total hands-free mouse solution. With built-in Dwell Clicking Software and a free
On-screen Keyboard. The AT package is used successfully by people with ALS, spinal cord injuries, muscular
dystrophy, and other special needs.
The latest version of SmartNav continues to provide
complete computer independence for the lowest price
on the market.
How SmartNav Works
SmartNav 4 uses an infrared (IR) camera to track your head movements. You reflect IR light back to the SmartNav, which sends instructions to your computer to move your mouse cursor.
How Is My Head Movement Tracked?
SmartNav tracks reflections from a tiny dot, which you can place
anywhere. Place the paper thin tiny reflective dot on the part of your
body you’d like to control the cursor with. Preferred options include:
Head, Hand, Hat, Glasses, Mic Boom
Where Do I Put The Smartnav?
SmartNav mounts on top of your monitor, laptop or communication
device facing you. SmartNav can also be threaded onto a mini
tripod and sit next to your computer. The device can be placed
anywhere as long as it can see the reflective accessory you’ve chosen to wear.
How Much Do I Move?
Less than an inch of head movement is more than enough to move
the cursor across your entire screen. This is also adjustable in the
software speed settings. SmartNav has a 45 degree Field of View
(FOV) and usually sits about 2 feet away from your head. Thus you
have almost two feet of free “head space” in which to move that
simple inch.
36
Hotkeys: Re-map keys from your keyboard and assign them to emulate the Left, Right and Middle mouse buttons.
Dwell-Clicking Software: Click by hovering the cursor in one spot for
a small (and adjustable) amount of time. A full dwell-clicking system
and on-screen keyboard are included in the AT software package,
allowing for total hands free operation.
Ability Switches: Industry standard input switch support allows you to
plug two switches into SmartNav for more clicking options.
See pg’s 15-18 for a full selection of switches.
Why Is Smartnav Different From Other Head Tracking Devices?
The SmartNav is both the fastest system on the market and the most
adaptable to the users needs.
Speed: The cursor position is updated at 100 frames per second,
resulting in precise cursor placement with real-time response.
Resolution: A high resolution imager (1280 x 480) allows for pixel accurate pointing and control that feels like a laser pointer.
Lighting Conditions: Sunlight resistance and tracking technology
allow the system to be used in almost any lighting environment. Sunlight is not a problem.
Software: SmartNav is the only head tracking system with software
allowing for full configuration and adaptability of the device.

The Tobii CDot Tracker provides individuals with limited or no use of their
hands, the freedom to control and click a mouse cursor.
*For use with the Tobii C8, C12, and C15 only - see Pg’s 14 & 15.
Who is helped with the Tobii CDot Tracker?
The Tobii CDot Tracker is designed specifically for those with limited use, or no use, of their hands; such as individuals with:
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
Early stages of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
Cerebral Palsy
Head Injuries
Mobility Impairment
Multiple Sclerosis
Muscular Dystrophy
Quadriplegia
Spinal Cord Injuries
Hands free mouse control
The Tobii CDot Tracker is a head mouse tracker that replaces a regular mouse. It works by tracking the exact movements of a small reflective
dot that is placed on the forehead, nose, glasses or any other visible area of the body. Once the dot is placed, its movements are tracked by a
high-resolution, intelligent camera and are instantly translated into accurate mouse cursor movements. Clicking can be done through dwell (the
pausing of the cursor over an object on the screen for a preprogrammed amount of time) or by using a switch.
Simply put, any action done with a regular mouse can also be accomplished with the Tobii CDot Tracker.
Robust ‘Plug and Play’ Design
Using the Tobii CDot Tracker is easy. Just plug it in to your device and it will instantly begin to track. It uses standard Windows mouse controls and
therefore requires no additional software or drivers. The Tobii CDot Tracker is built into a solid metal casing that fits snugly into the bottom of a
Tobii C8, C12 or C15 communication device. It is robust and reliable with no cables or any other protruding parts that could complicate use or
performance.
Freedom to move
The Tobii CDot Tracker can be operated accurately from a distance of up to five feet/150 cm and at angles from the device of up to 45 degrees. This gives users a wide range of motion and nearly complete freedom of movement. Whenever a user is located inside of this “trackbox”
the Tobii CDot Tracker will automatically start tracking. If the user leaves the trackbox and then returns, the Tobii CDot Tracker will automatically
begin tracking again. There is no need to reset or restart your Tobii CDot Tracker or your communication system. It is also easy to see when the
Tobii CDot Tracker is functioning. Blue LEDs on the front of the tracker indicate when the tracker is active and has locked-on to the tracking dot.
The Tobii CDot Tracker functions equally well outside as it does inside, even when tracking in direct sunlight!
