Roy Elsner
Elko, Nevada
Hello, I’m Roy Elsner from
Elko, Nevada. Many of you
I’ve met and I’m looking forward to meeting those I
haven’t. I’m a third generation Nevada rancher, my
Grandfather owned ranches in
central Nevada, and my Dad
buckarooed for different
ranches in Nevada, Oregon
and southern Idaho. I have a
degree in Pharmacy, which
helps me pay for my addiction to cattle. Currently my wife, Connie
and I have about 60 head of full blood Corriente.
We bought a set of heifers and a bull in the spring of 1996 and
we’ve been having a ball with them ever since. We went to our first
PNCA show in 1997, our bull won a third and my son Tucker won
the dummy roping. We were hooked. We went again in 1998 and I
was elected show manager for 1999.
I managed the show in 1999 and attended the National Show in
Gillette that year to help me prepare for our National Show in
Winnemucca, Nevada in 2000.
In 2000, we put on the National Show and I was elected Vice
President for the PNCA.
In 2001, I was elected the President of PNCA. We attended the
National Show in Colorado as well that year.
In 2002, I attended the National Show in Texas, as well as the
PNCA in Prineville, Oregon. In 2003, we again went to the PNCA
show in Prineville. In 2005, I attended 3 shows and was selected as
one of our new judges.
As you can see I enjoy the Corriente cattle and the people that raise
them.
I’ve enjoyed the challenges and progress we’ve made during my
first term as a director. There are quite a few other ideas that I want
to pursue including to continue the work started on providing us a
secondary market for our steers after they’re roped out.
I do want everyone to know I will continue to represent you, no
matter where you live, or what region you’re in, to the best of my
ability, if elected.

out wherever I am needed. And seeing old friends and making
new ones.
Personal Statement: It’s been a privilege to serve on the NACA
Board the last 3 years. The support of NACA members is what
makes this such a great organization. We all want the same
thing, fairness and balance. I would be honored to serve a second
term with your continued support.
Tommy Jordan
Monroeville, Alabama
I have been in the corriente
business since 1994 and am
currently a life member of
N.A.C.A. I have attended
every natonal show , central
states show and .. texas
show since 2002. I have
also attended a show in
Gillette, Winnemuca and
Cortez. I am a sanctioned
judge and have judged at
the southwest and central
states shows. I have served on the national board of directors for
the last 3 years. I feel that there are many things we are in the
process of doing as a board that will aid the naca members in
growing and marketing their cattle. I would like the opportunity
to serve on the board for another three year term to work toward
completion of these goals. My wife Christy and I currently run 90
registered cows. We market roping cattle , bulls for breeding and
replacement heifers. we are aware of the challenges in each market. I feel this knowledge will be an asset in representing each of
you. Your vote will be appreciated.

We raced across the pasture in a Polaris Ranger with Wayne
Lynn at the wheel and Stacy Lynn close behind in a Dodge pickup, nearly ending in a wipeout and tie crossing the gate. It was a
sign of what the weekend had in store.
It began shortly after the first of the year with a phone call from
TCCA vice-president, Stacy
Lynn. She invited me to the LF
Ranch for the weekend to discuss the upcoming Texas show
and check out their awesome
Corrientes. Wayne and Stacy
moved to Desdemona, Texas,
from Stephenville, Texas, a year
and a half ago, putting together
one of the best Corriente herds
in the United States. They have
won just about every award
NACA has to offer at every
region. She also mentioned her
stock ponds were loaded with
duck. I jumped at the opportunity to hunt in Desdemona.
I drove in late Friday night to find Wayne, Stacy, and friends
Donnie and Mary Kay Gray at the Buzzard Bar. The Buzzard
Bar is the LF Ranch’s very own pool hall. Its unique name originated from a buzzard Stacy bought at the silent auction during
the Southwest Corriente show. The Buzzard Bar began as
Wayne’s barbeque area where the buzzard “hung out.” Walls, a
pool table, shuffleboard and a bar were then added to make it a
local hangout. After the long drive and a butt-kickin’ in shuffleboard from Donnie, I was ready to turn in for the night.
Around five a.m. the next morning, I found myself busting ice
on a small lake to set out decoys. After a couple of hours of
hunting I retrieved all of my ducks but one. The last duck landed
in the middle of the lake on solid ice. Then I went back to the
ranch house for a home cooked breakfast and devised a plan with
Wayne to retrieve the duck. Our plan involved a rod and reel to
“fish” the duck out. After several unsuccessful casts from the
bank, we knew we had to get closer to the duck. Wayne then had
the idea to drive out into the lake with me on the back of the
Ranger. With ice-cold water rising into the floorboards, we finally got close enough for me to cast and catch the duck. We decided that this duck should be the first trophy mount in the Buzzard
Bar.

President’s Report
NACA
PRESIDENT
Over the past few months your Board and I have attempted to
initiate several changes that will enhance our organization. As a
result of the preliminary work at last Fall’s Long Range Planning
Retreat and the time devoted during the Board’s Annual Meeting
at the outset of 2008, you will see that the NACA Mission
Statement was slightly revised. Concurrently, our Long Range
Plan has been updated to reflect more clearly where the emphasis
needs to be placed in our organizational pursuits to meet this
common challenge. (see page 12) Our most lofty goal is –
“NACA will be recognized as the preferred source for Corriente
cattle by 2012.” Thus, our finite and limited resources will be
devoted accordingly in the months ahead.
Hopefully, you have been looking at the changes that are occurring with our Web site, including the highlighting of our Mission
Statement in order that both our members and those who come to
the site are continually reminded of our organization’s principal
focus. Please do not hesitate to provide your perspective to our
staff relative to the changes that are being made and the issues, if
any, that these may present in your use of the site.
A very significant change in direction with respect to our advertising and promotional efforts has also resulted from the selfanalysis that took place in the Long Range Planning update. The
Board has elected to proceed with a reduction in color print
media ad placements, while simultaneously attempting to move
to a focused broader audience campaign in the television media.
Thus, we have set aside significant funds in the 2008 Budget that
we hope to employ by becoming a sponsor for The Roping Show
on RFD-TV. We know that many of our members are included in
the 500,000 frequent viewers of this weekly program.
Fortunately, The Roping Show offers varying levels of sponsorship that make it possible for NACA to become better known by
those who are regularly viewing this program. The complete
details relative to our participation as a Sponsor have not yet
been finalized. Nevertheless, I encourage you to turn to RFD-TV
Channel and watch this excellent programming.

Another important matter before the Board in January was the
Judge Training Applications. I am pleased to report that Jared
Long, Jean Poythress and Roger Schalla were approved as participant's in the next round of Judge Training.
You will also see that in the next Annual Membership dues statement the Board has approved our change to a calendar year
accounting basis as had been strongly recommended by the
Auditor in the most recent Financial Audit. This change will also
make our Annual Membership list more accurate, as in the past
the Membership List was published annually shortly prior to the
time for annual dues renewals as opposed to shortly after such
renewals. In the future, dues will have been paid timely in order
to be listed in the Annual Membership Directory.

KINNAN
GOLEMON
Please make plans now to be an active sanctioned Show attendee
and participant in 2008. These gatherings are beneficial in our
breed promotion, but are also especially important in maintaining
the camaraderie and general goodwill among the Corriente community. The list of the 2008 shows is on page 7.
You will soon be receiving ballots for the election of NACA
Board Members for 2008-2011. Those filing timely for inclusion
on the ballot were current Board members Roy Elsner, Tommy
Jordan and Jeff Nourse, all of whom are seeking re-election.
As some of you may be aware, on January 1, 2008, I elected to
retire from the law firm where I had practiced for nearly 34 years
and to simultaneously launch a new sole proprietorship enterprise, KG Strategies, LLC. Fortunately, my secretary, Barbara
Weed, continues to provide the necessary support for my work,
my office phone number remains 512/479-9707, my cell remains
512/633-9428; however, my new e-mail address is:
[email protected].
Adios and Happy Trails!

Directory inserted in this issue.
SECTION 2: REGISTRATION
RULE 2.1 PRIVILEGE OF REGISTRATION. Only
Life, Active and Junior Members of the Association are eligible to register cattle in the North American Corriente
Herdbook, under the Rules and Regulations promulgated by
the Association.
A. Breeders List. The Breeders List is a list of NACA members who have registered calves they have bred within two
years of the publication of the list. Any breeder meeting this
requirement will be designated as a breeder on the list,
which is included in the published membership directory,
unless they provide a written request to the contrary.

Director’s Notes
Board of Director’s Meetings
The Director’s Notes column is a summary of the discussions and most pertinent
actions taken by the NACA Board of Directors during the most recent meetings.
Complete approved minutes are available to any NACA member on request.
January 11-12, 2008 • Kansas City, Missouri
Present: President Kinnan Golemon, Tommy Jordan, Jay Mathews, Liza Jane
Nichols, Jeff Nourse, Lyndell Petersen. Also present: Jim Spawn, Sharon Bosley.
Absent: Roy Elsner. Kinnan Golemon called the meeting to order at 9:10 a.m. He
led off with follow-up review of Fall Retreat. The regional associations’ input
was reviewed and discussed.
Jim Spawn welcomed the board members to Kansas City.
Activity Report: Jim reviewed the activity report. 3,842 registrations were
processed in 2007. This was down from 2006 but still the third-highest year on
record. Jim reviewed transfers, memberships and the other activity categories.
Financial Report: Jim reviewed the Balance Sheet and Income/Expense Reports
The 2007 budget predicted a loss of $6,517; the actual loss for 2007 was $11,564.
Kinnan reminded the Board that over $4,000 for supplemental pay for judges had
been approved after the 2007 budget process, thus, the annual loss was in line
with Board decisions. Liza Jane requested adding a line to the renewal form and
transmittal form to donate to the memorial funds. Liza Jane moved to accept the
reports; Tommy Jordan seconded; motion passed.
Corriente Corresponder: Jim reviewed the 2007 report. The Corresponder was
in the black for 2007. He reported that one 2007 breeder profile was not completed; the Ster Thrush feature. Jeff Nourse suggested a “history” page from past
Corresponders. Kinnan suggested a “then and now” feature. Liza Jane opined that
Jim does an outstanding job on the Corresponder; and that member feedback is good.
Membership: Membership stats were reviewed. Current member total: 841. As
of June 30, 2007, 158 members failed to renew. Discussion. Agreed by consensus
for Board members to make selective contact with the non-renewing members.
Web Site: Member directory on web site was discussed. Tommy stated that he
checked ten other associations’ web sites and none of them posted their member
directory. The annual printed directory was discussed, how to better highlight the
breeders. Liza Jane moved to change the format of the annual membership directory by listing the breeders at the start of each state and putting the members who
are not breeders in a separate category after the breeders; and to remove the membership status, except Lifetime, and also offer a check-box on the transmittal form
to request addition to the Breeder’s list. Jeff Nourse seconded; motion passed.
Tommy moved to change Rule 2.1 and add the word “published” between “the”
and “membership.” Jeff seconded; motion passed.
Member Rick Schlutz had suggested offering a blog or message board for
Corriente members. Member Julie Weber had corresponded that the web site is
not user-friendly. Discussion. Tommy had looked at numerous breed association
web sites for comparison and reviewed his findings for the board. Jim had solicited a professional webmaster but he was unable to bid until the specifics were
known. Tommy nominated Liza Jane to chair an ad hoc web site committee and
she accepted. Liza listed some desired web site changes from the discussion:
1. Add photo’s of staff
2. Add downloadable forms, i.e. “supply shed”
3. Add credit card payment portal
4. Create a pop-up or zoomable map for locating members
5. Create archives or historical section
6. Make Corriente Corresponder back issues available
7. Give the web site a Western theme/look
8. Add programs page for standing programs: Mark Nichols Crisis Fund, Joan
Dismuke Youth Judging and “Corriente Clyde” Dummy Roping Fund.
Liza Jane recommended Jim make all changes possible and then solicit a bid from
a professional web designer for additional features, if necessary.
Judge Training: Jean Poythress, Jared Long, and Roger Schalla were selected
for judge training. Jeff Nourse moved to set trainee’s fee at $250. Motion passed.
Budget: Kinnan called on Jim to review the draft. The 2008 draft budget was
read line-by-line and discussed. Under promotion, Kinnan brought up The Roping
Show and presented an email from them regarding sponsorship opportunities.
Liza Jane asked if the board would entertain a proposal to host some promotional
booths; agreed by consensus. Liza Jane stated her proposal should be ready in
February. Kinnan steered the discussion back to The Roping Show. Jay Mathews
moved to authorize Jim to negotiate promotional opportunities with The Roping
Show within our budget; seconded and passed. Kinnan added that Tyler Magnus
is willing to do voice-overs at no cost if needed.
Region Show Display: Jim showed the board members a proto-type “showbill”
poster he created. Discussion, suggestions made to improve readability. Agreed
by consensus to replace the display board with the poster.

Spring 2008 • The Corriente Corresponder
Meeting recessed 5:00 p.m. Re-convened at Hilton KCI on January 12 at 9:00 a.m.
Also present: CSCA President Brian Van Diest; Show Manager Judy Kuhlmann,
and Mary Van Diest.
2008 National Show: Kinnan reported that Tommy Jordan was unable to continue as 2008 National Show Committee Chairman because of his recent health
issues, so Liza Jane Nichols is appointed National Show Committee Chairman.
Liza Jane accepted the nomination with the condition of assistance from the rest
of the Board.
Show Manager Judy Kuhlman report: Judy passed out packets and gave a
detailed report. Show budget: each line item was reviewed. CSCA asked for guidance on saddle design and size. Discussion, consensus for fully tooled and 15 1/2
seat. Facilities and pens were discussed. Speakers/education: consensus for the
Committee to continue to work on the education program and bring a proposal
back to the Board. Judy reviewed the schedule. Breeder’s Roping was moved to
Friday night by consensus. Liza Jane brought up the Judging Seminar. The participants should not judge the cattle before the real judge does, which impacts the
schedule. Judging seminar moved to 8 a.m. Friday. Group classes - moved to
night before. Breeders Roping “true draw” was discussed. National Roping Chair
Jeff Nourse reported complaints from members, and recommended changing the
National Roping Rules. Discussion. Jeff moved that the National Roping rules for
Breeder’s Roping change from true draw to handicapped draw. Jay seconded;
motion passed. Liza Jane commended Judy, Brian and Mary on their preparations. She requested all the parties involved make contact every two weeks.
Tommy recommended the roping entry fee set at $20 per man instead of $15 for
ease of making change. Agreed by consensus. Kinnan thanked Judy, Brian and
Mary for taking their time to attend and for the excellent presentation.
2009 National Show: Kinnan reminded the board the 2009 show is only 18
months away. Progress toward the 2009 show was reviewed.
2010 National Show: PACA application to host was reviewed. Lyndell Petersen
appointed 2010 Natl Show Committee Chair. Application was accepted.
Criollo Congress: Kinnan and Jim reported. Jim advised that there had been
communication difficulties with the Criollo association in Spain due to a language barrier as well as time zone issues. Jim reported that many questions went
un-answered. He said that Dr. Fredrickson had been very helpful. The Spanish
were invited to come for a “face to face” meeting to clear up the questions and
plan the event, but there was no definite answer in their reply. Kinnan recommended, due to resource limitations, discontinuing efforts to host the Congress.
Agreed by consensus.
Long Range Plan: Reviewed, discussed and modified. (See page 12)
2008 Budget: Regarding membership income, Jim suggested a letter to nonrenewing members. Agreed by consensus. Jim/Sharon to draft a letter to encourage non-renewing members to pay their dues.
Web site Classifieds: Sharon Bosley reported confusion about the prepaid discount for web classifieds; most members thought they could “post now, pay later”
for $10 per month. An article was included in a recent Corresponder but the misunderstanding has persisted. Jay moved to charge flat rate of $20 per month for
web classified ads and discontinue the prepaid discount. Seconded and passed.
Advertising income: Rates discussed. The Corresponder has improved over the
years and also increased distribution. Our costs have gone up but the advertising
rates haven’t changed since 1995. Agreed by consensus, increase rates by 20%
and also adjust rates for less-than-full-page ads.
Jeff moved to accept 2008 budget as amended. Tommy seconded; motion passed.
Breeder’s List was discussed. Rule 2.1 revise last sentence: ...will be designated as a breeder on the list which is included in the published membership directory unless they provide a written request to the contrary. Motion passed.
Membership year: Discussion of conversion to calendar year. Jim suggested the
next dues notice could accomplish this. Instead of renewing for 12 months, members would renew for 18 months and thereby membership recordation will have
shifted to the calendar year at the end of calendar year 2009. Lyndell moved to
adjust the membership year to the calendar year for 2009 and to implement by
sending the renewal notice for 18 mos. dues. Seconded and passed.
Meeting adjourned 4:00 p.m.
Candidates for NACA Board of Directors:
Jeff Nourse
Las Vegas, New Mexico
The terms of NACA Directors Roy Elsner, Jeff Nourse and
Tommy Jordan expire this year. All three men are eligible for
re-election to the Board of Directors. There are three candidates
for these three available positions; they are presented in alphabetical order. Ballots will be mailed to all Lifetime and current
Active NACA members and the election results will be tabulated on May 21, 2008 at the Annual Membership Meeting in
Hutchinson, Kansas.
Roy Elsner
Elko, Nevada
Hello, I’m Roy Elsner from
Elko, Nevada. Many of you
I’ve met and I’m looking forward to meeting those I
haven’t. I’m a third generation Nevada rancher, my
Grandfather owned ranches in
central Nevada, and my Dad
buckarooed for different
ranches in Nevada, Oregon
and southern Idaho. I have a
degree in Pharmacy, which
helps me pay for my addiction to cattle. Currently my wife, Connie,
and I have about 60 head of full blood Corriente.

Monroeville, Alabama
I have been in the Corriente
business since 1994 and am
a Life Member of NACA. I
have attended every
Natonal Show, Central
States Show and Texas
Show since 2002. I have
also attended a show in
Gillette, Winnemuca and
Cortez. I am a Sanctioned
Judge and have judged at
the Southwest and Central
States shows. I have served on the national Board of Directors for
the last three years. I feel that there are many things we are in the
process of doing as a board that will aid the NACA members in
growing and marketing their cattle. I would like the opportunity
to serve on the board for another three-year term to work toward
completion of these goals. My wife, Christy, and I currently run
90 registered cows. We market roping cattle, bulls for breeding
and replacement heifers. We are aware of the challenges in each
market. I feel this knowledge will be an asset in representing
each of you. Your vote will be appreciated.

CLASSIFIED ADS:
Effective immediately, the rate for classified advertising on the NACA web site is a flat $20 per month.
Here is a brief review of web site classified advertising: Only NACA members may place ads. Ads should
be 50 words or less. It is strongly recommended that
the price and the location of the cattle or related items
for sale are included in the ad. Email address and/or
Web site will be hyper-linked if included in the classified ad, and there is no extra charge for this service.
The Web site receives numerous hits on any average
day, and the 'For Sale' page is the most popular page
on the site. If you haven't given this form of advertising a try, you might be missing out.
WEB SITE UPDATE:
The Web site is in the process of getting a fresh look
and some new features. If you haven't been there
lately, check it out. The Web site now has a more
western theme/appearance. A searchable map has
been added to the membership directory page - just
click on your state and the members within that state
will pop up. The NACA promotional video can now be
viewed on our Web site. This video was also posted
recently on one of the popular Internet sites in the

been added for awareness of our standing programs:
The Mark Nichols Memorial Crisis Fund; The Joan
Harms Dismuke Youth Award; and the “Corriente

By Billy Luke
We raced across the pasture in a Polaris Ranger with Wayne
Lynn at the wheel and Stacy Lynn close behind in a Dodge pickup, nearly ending in a wipeout and tie when crossing the gate. It
was a sign of what the weekend had in store.
It began shortly after the first of
the year with a phone call from
TCCA vice-president, Stacy
Lynn. She invited me to the LF
Ranch for the weekend to discuss the upcoming Texas show
and check out their awesome
Corrientes. Wayne and Stacy
moved to Desdemona, Texas,
from Stephenville, Texas, a year
and a half ago, putting together
one of the best Corriente herds
in the United States. They have
won just about every award
NACA has to offer at every
region. She also mentioned her
stock ponds were loaded with
duck. I jumped at the opportunity to hunt in Desdemona.
20 The Corriente Corresponder • Spring 2008
I drove in late Friday night to find Wayne, Stacy, and friends
Donnie and Mary Kay Gray at the Buzzard Bar. The Buzzard
Bar is the LF Ranch’s very own pool hall. Its unique name originated from a metal art buzzard Stacy bought at the silent auction
during the Southwest Corriente show.
Bar.
Shortly after getting back to the house, Donnie called. Donnie
mentioned he had caught seven wild hogs in a large homemade
hog trap. After hearing six of the seven hogs were babies, Stacy
decided she’d like to keep the babies. We headed to Donnie’s
ranch where we found six baby hogs and one angry, hundredpound boar. When we walked up to the trap the boar began to
bite and charge at us. Wayne distracted the boar while Stacy and
I caught the babies. We successfully caught three, while the other
three escaped through the panels. After loading our three piglets
into a pet taxi, I noticed one of the pigs running through a plowed
field. I took off running after it. After a lung-burning footrace,
the pig got away. Back at the LF Ranch, Stacy put her new pigs
in a horse trailer. Back at the house and hungry from the hog
chase, we had a wonderful elk steak lunch, from meat given to
the Lynn’s by TCCA president Dale Price.
Later that evening, Dale and Janice Price arrived to visit and go
over the upcoming TCCA show. Stacy, Wayne, Dale and Janice
have done an outstanding job over the holidays to ensure the
TCCA show will be a success. After Dale presented the amazing
new TCCA website we headed out for dinner. We all met the
Lynn’s friends down at the famous Mary’s Restaurant. After dinner, Dale and Janice headed for home and we headed for the
Buzzard Bar. While hanging out at the Buzzard Bar that night, I
realized, after many games, Donnie is definitely the world champion at shuffleboard!
After another successful morning of duck hunting we headed to
New York Hill for breakfast. New York Hill was previously a
small community on I-20. It is now a small restaurant keeping
the community’s past history alive. After breakfast we sat down
to relax and watch some football when we heard a knock on the
door. At the door was the Lynn’s neighbor, Ms. Whitt. She was
worried and needed help getting a stuck calf out of an antique
squeeze chute. When we
arrived, we found an angry 350pound Brahman calf trapped in
the chute. After an hour of prying and pulling we then had to
call Donnie to come with a cutting torch. After the calf was
freed, I don’t know who was the
happiest, Ms. Whitt or the calf.
Come to find out, Ms. Whitt had
bought a brand new squeeze
chute, but never installed it.
Stacy went after the tractor so
we could begin installing the
new chute. Ms. Whitt is lucky to
have the Lynns for neighbors,
they’re always there to lend a
helping hand.

If you ever get out toward central Texas, don’t pass up the
chance to visit the LF Ranch, the home of a great Corriente herd
and the Buzzard Bar. There will never be a dull moment during
your stay. But beware of Wayne when he’s driving the Ranger
and Stacy’s wild hogs. I had an amazing time during my stay at
LF Ranch and appreciate the Lynn’s hospitality. I know the
Lynn’s involvement in TCCA and NACA will bring much continued success in years to come.

REGIONAL / STATE NEWS
Texas Corriente Cattle Association
The show season is about to begin again! The final plans for the TCCA 10th annual Show and
Roping are being made. We have prepared Glen Rose, Texas for the April 23-26, 2008 invasion
of great cattle from all over the country to the Somervell County Expo Center. This is our 10th
Anniversary show. The dust will not settle until we have had some major league fun and all the
champions awarded. Information, entry packets and membership forms are all available at
www.TexasCorrienteCattleAssociation.com. Kick the 2008 show season off the Texas way!
Come join us for all the fun!
The TCCA has initiated a Classified Ads section to our popular website. There are more cattle,
and more buyers in Texas, than anywhere else in the country. Advertisers already report good
response to their ads. Advertise your corriente cattle with us for only $10 per month for up to
50 words. We can set up your ad to have a hotlink to your website or email. You must be a
TCCA member to advertise at these low rates. Of course, Membership Forms are available on
the website, along with Classified Order Forms!
Central States Corriente Association
Representatives from CSCA traveled to Kansas City in January to participate in the NACA
Board of Directors meeting – 2008 Show Manager Judy Kuhlman, CSCA President and
Secretary, Brian and Mary Van Diest. Plans and preparations for hosting the 2008 National
Show made great progress from this meeting. Many CSCA members have roles to play in hosting this event, and every one is working hard on their part to make this a great show.
The show will highlight a century roping, so get out there and practice, those of you in that
great age range. We will be awarding Gist belt buckles for all four roping sessions, and Master
Saddles for the Breeders Roping.
The welcome reception on Thursday night will feature a special event! Come join in the fun of
a CSCA tradition, Cow Paddy Bingo, to benefit the CSCA scholarship fund. One or two scholarships are given each year to members and their families. To date, $1,500 in scholarships has
been awarded.
A closed area of the arena is marked off in boxes like bingo and then the squares are auctioned
off. An animal is brought up from the pens and we watch to see where the first paddy is produced. There is a lot of good-natured shouting and laughing until the job is done. The winner
gets half of the purse and the other half goes to the scholarship fund.
All NACA members will receive an entry packet soon. Please mark your calendars and plan to
attend May 20-24, 2008. The facilities are first-rate, not just the fairgrounds but the headquarters hotel as well. Featuring an indoor water park, it is especially family-friendly. A lot of work
went into the budget to make the show as affordable as possible to attend while still offering
top-quality awards. The weather is usually great in May, so come on out to Hutchinson, Kansas,
a very central location with easy highway access. Make your plans now!

N.H. Bar Corrientes
In honor and memory of NH Bar Steer 020...
The highest-winning Corriente in the history of NACA
4 Supreme Championships
2003 National Champion All Around Steer
2003 National Champion Bulldogging Steer
2003 National Champion Steer (conformation)
2004 National Champion Steer (conformation)
7 All Around Awards
12 First Place Awards
3 Second Place Awards
1 Third Place Award
No other Corriente has won more than two Supreme Championships.
At the 2003 National Show, Gary and Jean Poythress were watching the Steer
Conformation. Gary did not know that 020 was mine, or that I was within hearing
distance, and he said, "There is what a Corriente steer should look like."
Unfortunately, the judge placed 020 in second place that day. 020 was the secondoldest steer in the class. I said, "unfortunately," because if 020 had won the
conformation class, he would have earned two more Supreme Champion titles!
For readers who don't know, to earn a Supreme Championship, the animal must win
its conformation class and also its performance class at the same show.
I feel that many breeders have lost sight of why the NACA was formed - to raise
roping and bulldogging steers. One former NACA President told me that steers were
just culls, or trash. To me, steers are the backbone of the breed.
Remember - Good Corrientes, like good men, need good mothers.
Come see the good mothers of our good Corrientes.
