Not the one my daughter wore as she became a Bat Mitzvah (though I thought she looked fabulous); rather, the dress that captured the nationʼs attention as we all wondered, “What color is that dress?” Some said white and gold, while others opined blue and black. After several articles took up the debate, it became clear that many factors influenced each personʼs perspective on that infamous dress. What color was it? Well, it all depends upon how you saw it. With shades of black and blue coursing through my minds eyes, my attention then turns to the questions swirling around Iran. Now I do not want to seem to belittle the seriousness of the situation or suggest it is on par with a matter of wardrobe selection. On the contrary, I believe it is one of the significant international issues that “begs for our attention”. For the past few months, I have poured through columns and punditry that either praise or decry the current attempts at reaching an agreement. I have heard the President, a man who by-and-large I respect, make a case for the current framework. I watched weeks ago as Prime Minister Netanyahu, whose decisions I often find myself at odds with but still recognize the difficult tightrope he must walk, presented his case before Congress. Experts say one is right while the other is wrong, shades of color that become as stark as black and white. I am no political analyst, nor am I someone who can foretell the future (wouldnʼt it be nice if I could). It would be wonderful to think that signed treaties would mean exactly what they say; that once a document is created, both sides embrace the terms and keep to them faithfully. Yet, I am not sure history would bear that up. I know this is infinitely more complex than a color question. For the dress, there might be a clearer answer. With Iran, I know it is not that simple. Rather than black or white, it probably is much “grayer” than I will ever know. Now, I watch and I hope. I hope that our leadership will be able to talk to each other and figure out a way forward. I hope Iran will have a change of heart, choosing to regain a place among the international community rather than standing against it. But...from where I stand, it “looks” like neither of those things will happen. All sides will continue to see it only from their own perspective, and the debate will drag on. For now, I will hold my breath and watch. However, I will pray that there will be peace and that the people of Israel and the Middle East will not have to fear the creation of more nuclear weapons. If only it was as clear as picking out a new dress. A Thank You and a Request Diane E. Berg, RJE Being honored at this monthʼs Temple Dinner Dance will be one of the high points in my life. Looking back on the many decades both as a teacher and principal, it all seems so amazing. Many of the children I taught in fourth grade, and then in Hebrew High School, have become parents with children in our school. Other alumni have moved away, but still keep in touch on Facebook or sometimes drop in to see their “old teacher”. What an extraordinary gift it is to see them grow up and flourish! And having a relationship with many of their parents and grandparents is also a blessing because I am always the first person in the temple to see their pictures and hear the latest news. I share their pride and joy as well. Their kids are also “my kids.” One of my favorite times of the year is when Rosh HaShanah and Yom Kippur arrive and I get to see many of our alumni. It is our yearly rendezvous. The feeling of joy in seeing “my kids” again is just one of the emotional rewards that come from being your educator. I profoundly thank you. Now, I must ask for something more…help support our temple. If you have learned anything from me, or used anything I taught you, or taught someone else something that you learned from me, please make a donation to the temple. Nothing would make me happier than knowing you are helping our students and our temple in the same way that prior generations did for you. Please help us assure a vibrant future by making a donation in my honor. I will be forever grateful. Thank you for being a part of my life and for your continued love and support. Elisa McDonagh, Membership Vice President Get Involved How can I help? What can I do to support and strengthen my temple family? Wonderful questions that we should be asking ourselves, because in answering them, we not only help our temple community, but enrich our own lives as well. By actively participating in temple life, we can make the temple a more vibrant place. We forge new friendships and enhance existing relationships while also nourishing our personal Jewish journeys. In this current climate of changing demographics and decreased temple affiliation across Long Island, we can make a difference right here at home. The more we participate, the more engaged we feel and the stronger our connection is to each other. Come and enjoy one of the varied Shabbat services. Come listen to the Junior Choir during a Family Service, or better yet, ask your child if they would like to join Junior Choir. Lend your musical talents to a TGIS service, listen to a discussion of the weekly parsha during a Torah Service, or just contemplate the weekʼs events during a moment of silent prayer and meditation. Donʼt just drop off the kids in the parking lot, but follow them inside during religious school hours and have a cup of coffee with other parents. Find your passion and explore it further in a temple activity or committee like Social Action, Project H.O.P.E., Outreach, Communications, Religious School or Fundraising. Donʼt know Hebrew? Take an adult education class. Start your own chavurah with friends, or make new ones. Consider a sustaining membership to offset the financial burdens of other temple families who need a little help. There is so much opportunity just waiting for you. Temple Beth El is a very special place, made even more remarkable by the individuals who call it home. Join us. 2 Marcia Schwalb, President Simply Wonderful We have a wonderful, supportive congregation - members come out to volunteer, they give their time, share their talents, care and give financial support. All efforts are truly appreciated and enrich the lives of our entire congregation. As I make my way to services or meetings, or Iʼm just hanging out at the temple, learning about opportunities to assist others and hearing stories about others experiences lets me know how blessed I am to be a part of our temple family. It has been a pleasure sharing these moments and learning with you these past two years as president. We have accomplished much that is good and more is to come with as many congregants involved as possible. Paraphrasing comments from a thank you to our Rabbi Jeff and the temple family from the parents of a recent Bat Mitzvah says it all: “Many people at our daughterʼs service commented on how warm and inviting the service and you, Rabbi, seemed. Some even asked if this was due to my serving on the board, to which I answered, ʼNo, this is what the Rabbi and the Temple are like.ʼ As I sat on the Bimah, I was able to look out at the people and could not help notice how engaged everyone seemed....enthralled by it all. It no doubt showed the magnitude of achievement that goes into becoming a Bar or Bat Mitzvah and the fact that the party is secondary to the achievement. Temple Beth El is a very warm and inviting place. While a family can ʻdo a Bat Mitzvah on the cheapʼ, to deny your child, your family, and yourself the once in a lifetime experience that only very few temples - perhaps only Temple Beth El - can provide, is just foolhardy. Thanks for making the experience simply fantastic.” I want to thank all our families - by being a part of Temple Beth El we are all giving each other a simply wonderful gift, a lifetime of Jewish experiences to share together and with the Huntington community. Have you thought about attending this yearʼs URJ Biennial 2015 - November 4th – 8th in Orlando? Iʼd like to invite you to join me - there will be programming tailored to congregational leadership with four intensive “tracks” focusing on strengthening congregations, audacious hospitality, Tikkun olam, and Torah l'shma (Jewish learning); as well as special programming and discounts for congregations sending delegations. Bring your kids with you for a URJ Summer Camp experience at biennial. For more information go online to http://urj.org/biennial Also, please remember that our Congregational Meeting will be held on Tuesday, May 26th at 7:00pm. Youʼll want to come hear our leadership share the news of the temple, to vote on our temple budget and the slate of nominees for Board of Trustees for next year and make your voice heard. We had so many wonderful donations where we filled the Atrium with strollers, walkers, car seats and high chairs. Many shoppers were expectant mothers who left with their arms and hearts full. Thanks to all of you who helped to give these newborns some of the basics they need to get started in life. March 31st marked the end of our tenth year as a respite site for HIHI - Huntington Interfaith Homeless Initiative. Once again we partnered with HJC and ENJC to make sure that our guests had a warm place to stay and meals to eat all winter. Kehillath Shalom and the Northport Presbyterian Church were also welcomed partners in the program this year, bringing volunteers to TBE who spend time with our guests. We continue to host this program, thanks to an outpouring of generous volunteers and donations. Much appreciation goes to Sisterhood and those who provided food, clothing, toiletries and linens, as well as to those who gave their time cooking, setting up, cleaning up and chaperoning. In April, Social Action held its Annual Spaghetti Dinner and Boutique. Due to a large donation of breads from Our Lady Queen of Martyrs, and a delicious sauce from Nino and Kelley at Red, we were able to serve more than one hundred thirty five guests a wonderful meal of spaghetti and meatballs. Once again, Reinwald's Bakery donated a delicious sheet cake that both our guests and volunteers raved about. Special thanks to Mollie Sugarman and her wonderful kitchen staff for preparing a special meal. Shop and help others at the same time…OurHarvest, a new local program, offers a unique way to reduce hunger in Huntington when you buy groceries. For every twenty-five dollars spent on food from their web site, the program will donate a meal to a local food pantry. Shop on-line for fresh meats, fruits, and vegetables, and then pick up your orders at Family Service League at 790 Park Avenue, at a designated day and time. To find out more about this program, please see: http://ourharvest.com/ Upcoming Events: We are once again providing Motherʼs Day Baskets for local shelter residents. The much needed items are: toiletries, make-up, stationary, large baskets and other items such as candles, perfumes, small frames. Please place donations in the Atrium basket until May 3rd. On May 17th and June 28th - Project H.O.P.E. Sunday Suppers at Moose Lodge in Greenlawn. Coming in July - The Annual Community Barbecue. Look for details in an upcoming flier. Special Thanks: In March, I was named an honoree for this yearʼs Tri-CYA's Hall of Honor. As told to those in attendance, “It takes a community of dedicated and compassionate people to make the difference that we do each day”. This community of caring people is present here at TBE during the year and I would like to thank those who share my passion for making a difference in the lives of many. Together we make the Town of Huntington a better place to live in. Take Action! Make a Difference! Help Wanted Let's get the word out! Calling adults with “a little time and organizational skills” to share! We are looking for help publicizing TBE Events and Programs. To gather information in hardcopy and email notices and make them available for local publications. The knowledge of Social Media is helpful. Contacts and timing for submissions is already set-up. If you are interested, please contact: Marcia Schwalb - [email protected] 4 Amy Podhurst, President Sisterhood Sisterhood Sisterhood Presidency: Giving and Getting To say I was reluctant to take on the role of Sisterhood President two years ago would be a tremendous understatement. Volunteering on the Board for four years prior, I wasnʼt sure I had enough experience to handle the position. What I found was that it wasnʼt so much the hard work as being aware of all the activities being done. As President, I am the key contact for the Sisterhood within the congregation and the outside world. That means I receive many emails every day from congregants, outside vendors, artists, potential members and Women of Reform Judaism announcements. The hardest part for me was being the filter of all this information and deciding how to delegate the activities. My most important goal was to reach out to current members of our congregation and make them feel connected to our Sisterhood. There are women who donʼt like to drive at night and some who are only available then. Working mothers and women taking care of older parents have a difficult time finding spare time for themselves. We, on the Board, created events to fit into their schedules while also maintaining events for moms who work at home and retired women. Some women prefer to come to events with their spouses and others want time to do something on their own. Every event may not meet the needs of each woman and we knew that. We wanted to make sure we had enough activities for different needs. This experience allowed me to meet people I never would have had the chance to meet and to learn what was important to our diverse population. I am grateful for this opportunity and hope that weʼve met your needs. If you are interested in creating a new event, we are always open to different ideas and new volunteers! Contact us at [email protected]. Howard W. Schneider President Menʼs Club - Brotherhood Brotherhood A Great Two Years Well it has been a fast two years. One moment Tom Cohn is asking if I would consider being president of the Temple Brotherhood and the next moment my two year tenure is over and Iʼm writing my last Brotherhood article for this bulletin. This position did not come with a lot of physical perks. You donʼt get a gavel and you donʼt get a parking space in the temple parking lot. What you do get is a copy of “Robertʼs Rules of Order” with a big note attached that says, “Never Ever Open, Ever.” Iʼm proud to say I never felt the need to open it even once. The Brotherhood is more about comradery then parliamentary rules. I would like to think I have served my comrades well. I have certainly had a good time doing it. I would like to take this time to thank all of my fellow Brotherhood members for allowing me to represent you on our temple board. You have given me the opportunity to help shape our temple community and befriend temple members I might not have even met before. Thank you for Sukkah building, ushering and participating in our summer services. Thank you for sharing bagels and knowledge at our Sunday morning meetings.Thank you for sharing friendship and fun at our Wine Tasting Dinners and summer get together. Thank you for making it a great two years. Quite frankly, the hardest part of this position has been writing the articles for this bulletin. Looking back, now that the last article is done, that really wasnʼt so bad either. Mazal Tov.. To Scott Greenwood, on completing his conversion to Judaism. To Fran Hyde, on her granddaughter becoming a Bat Mitzvah. To Barbara Schenk, on her grandson becoming a Bar Mitzvah. To Norman Copel, for his 70th birthday. 5 Thank You To Rabbi Jeff "The Builder" Clopper, Cantor Alison "Stacy London" Lopatin, and Diane "Julia Yelda" Berg for putting on a fabulous adults-only evening of fun and games, megillah performances, homemade hamentashen and, of course, wine for our Adult Purim Celebration in March. To Sue Seiler and Sue Kaufman for their on-going work and dedication to our B'nei Mitzvah program and families, and to Sue Seiler for managing our B'nei Mitzvah Trainer transition with Lenny Thaw, who is doing such a wonderful job preparing our students! To the Nace Family: Julie, Chuck, Ben and Sarah, for their dedication to the Mitzvah Tree program; the maintenance of our lovely Mitzvah Tree, labeling of needed items, sorting, packing and shipping our donations. Their dedication enables us to help support three recipient families in great need of our assistance. To Marcia Schwalb for her kind, thoughtful and tireless leadership as President of our synagogue and leader of our Board of Trustees. To Mike and Hillary Epstein, and the rest of Fleetwood Macked for a great concert event and to those who helped coordinate the event and made it great: Nanci Weber Schaeffer, Barbara Schenk, Debbie Rich, Lisi Viesta and Jen Freed. To Judy Fairbanks for her tireless work in creating our spectacular new website! Hundreds of hours of time were donated by Judy in order to create the website, bringing us to the forefront of technology. Your contributions are greatly appreciated and have not gone unnoticed! To Jamie Samuel, for coordinating and sending out the amazing Purim packages to our college students. To Peter and Jennifer Shore, for the beautiful Mother's Day baskets, and to Sue Seiler for another great year coordinating Project HOPE. 6 Tributes - David and Janice Groden Grace Koutrouby at yahrzeit - Halle Greenwood – March 28th Hannah Kleinman – May 9th We are so proud of our daughter, Halle, as she begins her journey as a Jewish woman in our community. Temple Beth El and Rabbi Clopper are both very meaningful to our family. We have shared many wonderful life events at the temple and have met some amazing congregants during this process. Halle has enjoyed eight years as a student at our warm and inviting Religious School. Belonging to Temple Beth El has been very special to my family. Hannah is learning to be a very caring member of the Jewish community that I am very proud of. She always wants to lead the prayers on Shabbat and she's always singing Hebrew songs, even in the shower. I feel that the temple experiences have made Hannah proud of herself as a young lady and of her Jewish heritage. For her Gʼmilut Chasadim project, Halle assisted with coaching a second grade boysʼ basketball team. She shared her love of basketball and thought it would be even more special to share it with her little brother. Her Tzedakah project was to collect toys and food for dogs and cats at the Little Shelter in Huntington. As an animal lover, Halle struggles with the notion that someone would ever abandon their pet and saw the happy faces of the dogs and cats at Little Shelter. She knew right away this would be the place with whom she would share her gifts. Her creative project was a photo board filled with photos of Jewish life from Brooklyn and Queens. Halle has become an avid photographer and has taken an interest in other cultures. Her becoming a Bat Mitzvah has been an amazing experience for the whole family. We hope she passes on the values and traditions she has learned along the way. Thanks to all who have helped her learn and prepare for this most meaningful time in her life! Hannah will be playing the oboe at the synagogue during her Bat Mitzvah services. The oboe is one of Hannah's passions. Music has always been a big part of Judaism for Hannah. The temple always has songs and music as part of the services. In addition, Hannah's Chinese name, Yaxian means musical in English. Hannah will be collecting toys to donate to children at hospitals to cheer them up. Hannah loves to be helpful and in make others feel good. Helping children in the hospital comes naturally to Hannah, since her sister has had to stay at the hospital for many surgeries in her life. Hannah will also be helping out at Long Island Cares as one of her projects. My wishes for Hannah's future are that she continues to embrace her Jewish background and attain all of her goals. I hope she continues to embrace her love for reading. Reading is a wonderful educational thing that Hannah has always done. I also hope she never stops wanting to be so inquisitive and interested in everything around her. My hopes are that Hannah continues on the path that she is on. I love her very much and I'm very proud of her. Joseph Strickland – May 2nd We are delighted that our son, Joseph Max Strickland, is becoming a Bar Mitzvah this year. Joseph has worked hard towards learning all of his prayers and his Torah portion. In furtherance of his becoming a Bar Mitzvah, Joseph chose a project that represents his long time interests as well as his own charitable endeavors. Since he was young, Joseph has studied martial arts at United Studios of Commack, including Kung fu, Kempo and Jiu Jitsu. This year, Joseph should be successfully obtaining his black belt. Over the past school year, Joseph has dedicated part of his after school time in support of the Best of Buddies Program at his school; this program provides peer support for children with intellectual and developmental disabilities. On April 11th, Joseph created and will host a Kick-a-Thon at United Studios. Joseph is including members of the Best-of-Buddies program, as well as students at the Studio and his friends in this Kick-a-Thon. All of the net proceeds will be given to the Best-of-Buddies Program. This event combines all three concepts behind the Bar Mitzvah Project into one. Through this event, Joseph is both giving back to his community and meeting the charitable aspect as the proceeds that will be raised constitute Tzedakah. Finally, the development of the Kick-a-Thon and the promotion of the events are creative. We are delighted that Joseph has grown into such a mature and caring young man, willing to give of his time and energy to benefit and help others. Lucy Biblow – May 23rd Lucy began attending family services at Temple Beth El and thinking about becoming a Bat Mitzvah some years ago. She participated eagerly when her older siblings became Bʼnei Mitzvah and she is excited and honored to be given her chance to read from the Torah. For her service project, Lucy will be assisting in an annual cycling event that helps gather funds to provide housing for AIDS patients. Her charitable contribution will be to donate funds to that same organization, Housing Works. Finally, her creative project will be the creation of a Yad; a symbol of her participation in this important ritual. Temple Beth El has nurtured important values in our children that we hope will evolve further in their characters and in their relationships to the world around them. We wish for Lucy a lifetime full of peace, happiness and pride in all that she endeavors to accomplish. 8 Dylan Isaac – May 20th Daniel Shenkelman – June 6th It is with great pride and joy that we announce that our son Dylan Jacob Isaac will become a Bar Mitzvah on May 30th, 2015. Temple Beth El has been such a wonderful place for Dylan to grow and learn. Rabbi Clopper, as well as Lenny Shaw have been so positive and reassuring to all of us. They have made the experience of becoming a Bar Mitzvah truly fun. Temple Beth El is special to us because it is a warm and welcoming place. We are very proud of Daniel as he is preparing for his special day. We wanted to thank Rabbi Clopper, Lenny Thaw, Diane Berg, and the rest of the staff for making it such a great experience. Daniel chose Project Hope for his Gʼmliut Chasadim project. It is an eye opening experience for him to help those who are less fortunate than he. With every passing day he is showing us that he is maturing to become a diligent and compassionate young man. Daniel is extremely bright and his interests are boundless. We hope that through the teachings and values of the Jewish faith, he will use his talents to make our world a better place. We are excited to celebrate his Bar Mitzvah at Temple Beth El, and have all of our family and friends to share in his special day. For Dylanʼs GʼMilut Chasadim he has decided to work with Birthday Wishes. He will make two Birthday in a Box packages. This will give children that are in a shelter everything they need to have a great Birthday party. Dylanʼs Tzedakah charity is the little shelter. We are going to be having a fundraiser to provide the animal shelter with various things they need. Dylanʼs creative project is making a Seder plate that we will use for years to come. As Dylan becomes a Bar Mitzvah he is on the journey of becoming a man. We think he is a bright, funny and compassionate person. His future will be truly blessed and bright. Diana Fogel – June 13th Temple Beth El has become a very special place to us over the years. Rabbi Clopper is an exceptional leader who has made us feel welcome and we are thrilled that he has been an integral part of Dianaʼs learning experience. Dianaʼs success is also due to her wonderful teachers at Temple Beth El. And a big Thank you to Mr. Lenny Thaw for guiding Diana through the Bat Mitzvah process. Daniel Lawson – June 6th Temple Beth El is very special to our family. Danielʼs grandparents were long standing members and his mother became a Bat Mitzvah and received confirmation here. We are very thankful for the teachers and staff who have been so warm, encouraging and supportive over the years. We are so proud of Dianaʼs enthusiasm over her Jewish studies and becoming a Bat Mitzvah. She appreciates the traditions she has inherited and understands how special they are to her family and her community. That is why she has decided to look no further than her own backyard for her community service project. She has participated in the Purim Carnival, HIHI, the Baby Boutique and Project HOPE. She has learned how fulfilling it can be to serve others and will continue in the years ahead. For Danielʼs service project, he has been working with Project H.O.P.E., assisting in set-up of their Sunday Suppers. He also participated in the Run For Hope, a 4 mile race, while helping to raise funds for their program. For Danielʼs creative project, he has chosen to create a poster board combining his love of sports with Judaism, highlighting the lives and careers of Jewish athletes. We are so proud of Daniel on becoming a Bar Mitzvah! It brings us great pleasure to watch our son grow into a mature, responsible and compassionate young man. We wish him a lifetime of happiness. For Tzedakah, Diana will be honoring a special person in her life by making a donation to the Michael J. Fox Foundation. We are bursting with pride over Dianaʼs accomplishments and the beautiful person she has become, both inside and out. Does your teen love drama? Check out Just Act NYC!
