SOMERS With Health and Safety legislation now a major consideration in every material handling procedure, it’s also one of the most important reasons for choosing Lloyds Somers lifting systems. The unique Lloyds Somers scissor concept automatically locks Because every Lloyds Somers scissor system is fully automatic, the jaws open or closed, so it is extremely reliable and very that means there is no need for any operator intervention safe - and what’s more, it requires no external power or throughout the entire lifting cycle. So, with Lloyds Somers, the crane modification of any sort. That makes Lloyds Somers the possibility of trapped fingers, or manhandling of cumbersome ideal choice for a wide variety of lifting tasks where a long, lifting equipment, doesn’t present itself. trouble-free, low-maintenance operating life is vital. Almost no two companies have exactly the same needs for coil handling; they may be similar - but not the same. So too with Lloyds Somers coil handling solutions, every possible option you could need is available. From individually fabricated lifting beams and ‘C’ hooks, to fully automatic systems for coated coils - Lloyds Somers offer you a total service in design, manufacture, installation and on-site maintenance. 3 4 3L L O Y D S S SOMERS SENSING SYSTEMS Lloyds Somers unique sensing systems began with the needs of the steel industry to eliminate overclamping damage, and also the requirement to detect coil bores through a wide variety of bore lining materials. Remote mounted pressure sensors in the lifting feet and full length leg mounted sensor plates detect the precise moment of safe clamping pressure - no more, and no less. 8 9 Bright LED status lights indicate the status of each of the sensing systems. Green shows leg drive motors stopped by leg plates contacting coil walls. Amber indicates both lifting feet are in contact with the coil. Red shows lifting feet are aligned with the coil bore. One Complete System. S3 systems can also offer a coil proximity sensing option and fully automated data-logging. The advent of pre-coating and finishing has seen the Lloyds Somers Sensing Systems make a major contribution in damage elimination. The S3 systems, which can detect coil edges to prevent overclamping, coil proximities to eliminate collisions, and racking centres for safe storage, can also be equipped with datalogging interface facilities for precise inventory control. The only impact Lloyds Somers Sensing systems make - is on the balance sheet. SOMERS Developing individual specialist systems for very safe, stable, handling. 16 tonne Hydraulic Down-Ender, Alcan. Spark-free Rotator developed for ALCOA. Motorised Duplex Slab Grab for horizontal aluminium slab handling. Crane mounted aluminium Slab Rotator. Across the world, the standards now being demanded in every industry But new methodologies are not just simplifying handling - they’re delivering significantly for material handling and manipulation are the highest ever. With increased increased production figures too. Remarkably, that’s not often accounted for in the initial emphasis on QA and damage elimination, and increased Health and Safety enquiry, but delivering optimum handling performance, teamed with eliminating handling requirements, many production processes have been forced to damage, has always delivered a measurable increase in production efficiency develop new methodologies. and product yield. Lloyds Somers can bring an engineering advantage to Lifting, lowering, rotating and stacking - have all seen radical almost any area of material manipulation. Partly, this is because LLoyds changes in their requirements. Of course, the first priority has Somers already have practically all the systems in place to build an effective always been handling with safety; but now, with increasing handling solution. But even more importantly, Lloyds Somers have a emphasis on material quality, because any damage caused by handling is also seen as unacceptable. All fabrication exceeds the most demanding Quality standards, and is approved to the highest specifications. worldwide track record of really understanding customers’ needs; they talk your language and they understand your problems - and they can deliver the right answers, wherever you are. From raw material stockholding, through production process manipulation, spark-proof pneumatic actuation, high temperature hydraulics, and even high stability to finished product storage and despatch, every area of industry has its own systems for molten material lifting. unique problems; its own unique requirements. Lloyds Somers engineers Whatever the requirement, Lloyds Somers’ engineers deliver 100% performance driven understand this, that is why the ability to accommodate very specialised solutions - solutions that are production proven, not just across the world, requirements is seen as a vital consideration - requirements such as but across the widest range of industries. Sheet Pack Lifter, China Steel. Spreader Beams at Alstom. Lifting system at CORUS, Port Talbot. Multi-function Sheet Lifter at Rover Swindon. Motorised Roll Handling Grab. Hydraulic Billet Tong, Sandvik, Sweden. The first thing every production problem needs - is proven thinking. From the strength of engineering design and stress analysis, to the quality To achieve this, there’s no substitute for a solid foundation in design engineering of welding and fabrication, Lloyds Somers primary aim is to deliver material and a passion for solving handling problems. Actually, the extent of Lloyds Somers handling excellence and proven production performance. At this level, industry experience is probably unique, and almost certainly it’s unequalled. But compromise is never a consideration, because if the first fundamental is to what that experience means is, whatever problem a customer faces, Lloyds Somers design a system which exactly matches the tasks specified by the customer may well have addressed it already, or at least - something very similar. and Lloyds Somers’ own project team, then the second objective is to exceed them. SOMERS Modification, overhaul, and rebuilding. 1 What’s the best thing to do when a slab tong or coil lifter won’t work? What’s the quickest and most cost-effective way to get a repair? What about emergency damage? And why does it take so long to get it done anyway? Accidents happen, and every lifting system needs overhauling sooner or later. 2 But Lloyds Somers recognised that far too many manufacturers were less than co-operative when it came to dealing with customers’ repair and maintenance problems. In many ways it’s understandable - with hard pressed production facilities under pressure to get out new orders, maintenance and repair jobs are bound to get pushed to the back. Right? At some companies, maybe. But not at Lloyds Somers. The maintenance and service division 3 3L L O Y D S S SOMERS SENSING SYSTEMS Lloyds Somers created is a totally separate unit - in a totally different location, staffed with maintenance, repair and modification specialists - they all operate to exactly the same standards as Lloyds Somers, but are dedicated and focused on delivering absolute excellence in after sales. Their primary consideration is safety - ensuring your lifting systems are returned to 100% operational efficiency - and as quickly as humanly possible. 1. A CORUS 113 tonne Duplex Dogging Tong ready for complete strip-down, inspection and report. 2. The dedicated Maintenance and Overhaul facilities can accommodate a large variety and size of lifters. 3. The finished Product, a fully overhauled Scrap Baler about to be returned to CORUS, Port Talbot. In an emergency breakdown, the first priority is to accurately 4 assess the condition. Immediately upon receipt of instructions a full strip and inspection is undertaken and a detailed report prepared - together with a firm and fixed quotation. Once that is approved, work can commence, and the lifter is returned safe, sound, tested and certified - as good as the day it was made. Exactly the same applies to overhaul. The first priority is to strip, inspect and report, then 5 everything is quoted up front, so you’ll know exactly what you’re paying, and how long your lifter will be out of commission. With Lloyds Somers on-site servicing, as well as keeping your systems in optimum condition, the service team closely monitors component wear rates and can often predict potential failures and often prevent emergency breakdowns. That alone can more than justify on site servicing. But the world moves on, and industry doesn’t stand still. So what 6 happens when your business needs change? By refitting and modifying your lifting systems, Lloyds Somers can ensure your lifters stay cost-effective and efficient, bringing your systems right up to date - and keeping your business ahead of the competition. 4.
