The first TSM day conference at Oundle School was in 1994, and there have been regular TSM events since then, with the first 3-day residential course in 2002. As well as locations throughout the UK, there have been recent TSM training events in many countries overseas. I hope you enjoy this course and derive lasting benefit. DOUGLAS BUTLER, Director, iCT Training Centre (Oundle) The iCT Training Centre, Oundle is proud to be one of the first to be awarded the new NCETM Standard for Continual Professional Development for mathematics teachers. SATURDAY 4th July 2015 18:00 TSM and WiFi Registration (Foyer, Chancellor’s Building) 19:00 Dinner (The Refectory) Accommodation: The Oaks -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- SUNDAY 5th July 2015 08:30 Breakfast (The Refectory) 09:30 TSM and WiFi Registration (Foyer, Chancellor’s Building) 10:00-13:00 PRE-CONFERENCE WORKSHOPS P1: Introductory Autograph led by CHRISTINE DICKINSON P2: Introductory Excel led by SIDNEY TYRRELL P4: Working with iPads led by RON LANCASTER [in CBA 1.078] [in CBA 1.098] [in CBA 0.061] B1: in room CBA 0.061 With TI Nspire, Geogebra, Microsoft Mathematics and, one day, a CAS view in Autograph, Computer Algebra Systems have a pivotal role to play in mathematics education. This course will first compare the various systems available and will then focus on the use of CAS in enhancing understanding when teaching algebra at all levels. Led by MARTIN WITHINGTON, assisted by Sydney Tyrrell B2: AUTOGRAPH 3.3 for ages 11-16 in room CBA 0.007 Getting used to dynamic object selection and Autograph’s tools that are designed for effective teaching and learning, including the slow plot, dynamic constant controller and scribble tool. Dynamic lessons for key stage 3 and 4. Data handling, 2D and some 3D topics will be covered. Led by ALLY STRACHAN, assisated by Richard Wade B3: AUTOGRAPH 3.3 for AS/IB in room CBA 1.078 Statistics: looking at entry of both Raw and Grouped Data; comparing box plots, cumulative frequency and dot plots; Histograms. 2D: Graphs, functions, numerical methods, trigonometry; calculus, coordinate geometry; bivariate data; residuals. 3D: lines, planes, vectors and volumes of revolution. Mechanics: parametric plotting and vectors, including battleships! B4: Led by CHRISTINE DICKINSON, assisted by Ron Lancaster AUTOGRAPH 3.3 for A2, FM and IB Higher in room CBA 1.098 This popular and highly-acclaimed course focuses upon ways of incorporating Autograph in the teaching of topics encountered at the top-end of pre-university mathematics courses. 2 COMPUTER ALGEBRA in the classroom Led by MIKE WAKEFORD, assisted by Oliver Bowles 7 TSM WORKSHOPS - Strand A A1: iPads in the Mathematics Classroom (Sunday) in room CBA 0.061 Examine how students can use the iPad to experience mathematics and communicate their understanding in new ways. Consider the impact that the device can have on the teaching of mathematics and the resulting benefits for students. Led by RON LANCASTER, assisted by Mike Wakeford A2: MODELLING APPLIED MATHEMATICS and Inquiry in room CBA 0.007 This course will concentrate on the use of technology for modelling, investigations and explorations. • Use of Videos to tie into a carefully designed resource to take the initial engagement into a more profound and lasting experience. • Modelling using tracker software, Autograph, Geogebra, Desmos, TiNspire • Big Data Sets will be explored, • Flipping the classroom Led by OLIVER BOWLES, assisted by Ally Strachan A3: GEOGEBRA (Beginners/Intermediate) 13:15 14:00 Lunch [The Refectory] TSM and WiFi Registration (Foyer, Chancellor’s Building) 14:15 - 16:00 Further practice from the morning workshops, or AUTOGRAPH TRAINER WORKSHOP [in CBA 0.061] led by the TSM Tutors Delegates attending this also attend the regular TSM program. The award of an Autograph Trainer Certificate takes place after TSM, after the candidate has run at least two Autograph workshops with excellent evaluations. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- THE MAIN TSM WORKSHOP -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------15:30 TSM and WiFi Registration (Foyer, Chancellor’s Building) Accommodation: The Oaks Delegates will get to grips with Geogebra software, discover its many uses and be inspired to use it in the 11-18 classroom. You will take away lessons to use with your students! You will learn some basic and more advanced skills: creating geometrical figures, using sliders and animation to add dynamism, transforming shapes, graphing, transforming functions and introducing calculus. 16:30-16:40 Welcome Douglas Butler (iCT Training Centre) 16:45-18:30 WORKSHOP Strand A (1¾ hrs) Led by RICHARD WADE, assisted by Martin Withington 19:00 Dinner [The Refectory] A5: EXCEL (for teaching Statistics) in room CBA 1.078 in room CBA 1.098 Excel is a powerful and dynamic tool for investigating and demonstrating mathematics and basic statistics. This workshop will introduce to those who haven’t met them the powerful tools of PivotTables and Filters for analysis and will use them to analyse real data sets.
