Nous allons essayer dans cette présentation de visiter le jardin littéraire de
certains écrivains francophones en provenance du Maghreb. Le choix effectué,
certes non exhaustif, néanmoins va couvrir les voix maghrébines les plus
connues aujourd’hui au Maghreb, à savoir: Driss Chraïbi et Tahar Ben Jelloun
du Maroc; Katib Yassin et Assia Djebar de l’Algérie; et Albert Memmi de Tunisie.
Ces écrivains écrivaient avec une grande concentration et une grande discipline essayant de rester maghrébins tout en s’exprimant dans la langue de Molière. Ils y réussissent? « Aucune langue n’est étrangère, à condition de pratiquer d’abord sa propre langue, » écrivait Kateb Yassin en 1975. « Je m’exprime aujourd’hui en arabe dialectal, dans la langue du peuple algérien. J’apprends aussi à balbutier en langue dite berbère, la langue des ancêtres. C’est
un double saut périlleux. Il faut le faire ou se résigner à l’aliénation.»

Christine Patterson fera une conférence sur Jacqueline de Romilly
(Romiyee), Collégienne de France, Institutrice de France, entrée
dans neuf Académies, première femme à enseigner au Collège de
France considéré comme une haute distinction dans l’Enseignement Supérieur Français. Jacqueline de Romilly est la deuxième
femme à entrer à l’Académie Française. Ses recherches et écrits
sur Thucydide sont remarquables. Elle a passé sa vie à enseigner
le grec ancien. La question suivante lui est souvent posée:
« Pourquoi apprendre le grec ? » Elle répond simplement: « Cela
apprend à réfléchir. »
The holiday season has come and gone and the cold
weather has settled over Hartford. It’s time to shake off
the winter blues. In 2011, the Alliance Française is undertaking new outreach efforts. AF member Dana
Bucin, Esq. has volunteered to organize meetings for
young professional French expats who would be interested in exchanging ideas, collaborating, and networking. Dana’s initiative is meant to expand our membership by attracting young French professionals while fulfilling a real need in the community. This initiative will be
organized in conjunction with the Alliance Française de
New Haven.

starting the year with a bang. On January 16, Christine
Patterson will speak about Jacqueline de Romilly, a renowned scholar and member of the Académie Française who taught Ancient Greek most of her life. On
January 30, Abdellatif Hissouf, professor at CCSU, will
talk about a selection of francophone authors from the
Maghreb.

In February, I am very happy to announce a visit to my
friend Chet Kempzinscki’s studio. Chet is a very wellknown Hartford artist and he will teach us all we always
wanted to know but were afraid to ask about the monotype technique. During this visit we will also be able to
admire his latest work.
But there are many more interesting events to come.
Sharon Straka is organizing a guided visit to the Monet
exhibit at the Wadsworth Atheneum followed by dinner
at French restaurant Cavey’s in Manchester for the
month of March. Continuing with the Maghrébin theme,
we will welcome spring with a belly dancing event organized in conjunction with the Alliance Française de
New Haven. Get your belly dancing skirts ready and
stay tuned!
L'académicienne Jacqueline de Romilly, spécialiste de
la civilisation et de la langue grecques, qui fut la première femme professeur au Collège de France, est
décédée samedi à l'âge de 97 ans, à l'hôpital Ambroise
-Paré de Boulogne-Billancourt. Elle était la doyenne
de l'Académie française, depuis la mort de Claude
Lévi-Strauss l'an dernier. «La Grèce aujourd'hui est
en deuil», a réagi le ministre grec de la Culture.

Hartford artist Chet Kempczinski will welcome members of the Alliance Françaises de Hartford and New Haven to his beautiful Hartford
studio. An artist of wide recognition and an art teacher at Loomis
Chaffee, Chet’s paintings can be admired at the Wadsworth
Atheneum, the New Britain Museum of Modern Art, and at the Westwood Gallery in Soho among other places.
Chet Kempczinski is an artist with deep roots in the community and
has participated in many projects involving Hartford and its public
schools. In addition, Chet and his wife Geneviève Rela have been
members of the AFH for a very long time first as student and teacher
respectively, lately as friends.
Please come to learn everything about the monotype technique he
uses for his paintings and to admire some examples of his newest
monoprints and watercolors.
The presentation will be in English. Refreshments will be served.

Events such as the Annual Meeting, the 14 juillet and the Beaujolais
Nouveau require dedicated, enthusiastic volunteers working together to

these events, the AFH has offered cooking classes, wine tastings, tennis soirées, game nights, music programs, trips to New York City and

Alice Kane
We lost a best friend this last spring. The
Alliance Française lost a dedicated supporter. Alice loved French, the language,
the culture and the friends who shared
this love. She was a student, a helper on
the Alliance Board, a regular at the cultural programs, a member of Le Petit Cercle and the reading group. Upon her retirement from teaching Alice and her husband, Jim, traveled and lived in France.
She loved everything French: films, reading, speaking and learning. This past year
when a stroke limited her speech, French
was always there. In honor of her unstoppable character and constant friendship
we established a fund to support cultural
programs. Contributions can be sent to:

Download a registration form the website <www.alliancefrancaisehtfd.org>, and mail it to the AFH Office with payment.
Call the AFH Office to request a registration form be mailed to you; send it back to the office with payment.
You may stop by the AFH office during working hours (Tuesday and Thursday 12- 4 p.m.). Please call ahead.

Registration Policy
All classes are for adults (over 18), no discrimination on the basis of race, color, nationality or ethnic origin.
All students are required to be members of the AFH. Tuition costs do not include membership fee or books.
All applicants are requested to fill out a registration form and sign the Withdrawal Policy
Classes require a minimum of 3 students. AFH reserves the right to cancel a class with insufficient enrollment.
Students registering late are required to pay the full tuition.
Make-ups for missed classes are not permitted.

Classes are held at 233 Pearl Street, 3rd floor, Hartford. Students may park in the LAZ surface lot at the Pearl and Jewell Street
intersection (across from the Fire House, closest to park); the Rate is $3 after 5:00 p. m. (mention AFH). Street parking is often
available and free after 6:00 p. m. NO DISOUNTS APPLY during XL Center/Civic Center Events.

French 103: In this continuing French introductory class, you will learn more basic language skills. You’ll be able to use expressions with avoir,
faire, quelqu’un, quelquechose, venir de, quantity, and interpersonal expressions; talk about vacations, outings, existence, dates, year, countries,

Film et Conversation
"Film and Conversation" will look at another very different, but very important, francophone cinema genre. This trimester will look at french
cinema from La Belle Province: Québec. The history of the Québec cinema is very unique, very unilke that of France even though both share the
same language. Using 5 movies from the early 1970s and through to 2005 the class will discover or rediscover Québec, its cities, its people, its
language, its problems and its wonders.
Current Events
The "Current Events" class is a conversation/debate format where students will have the opportunity to research and discuss a variety of topics
occurring in the francophone community (European - Belgique, Suisse, France, Luxembourg; Afrique; Canada). Each week will look at a small
sample of political and cultural events that occured around the time of class. The students will listen to brief extracts of radio and TV newscasts or
research online articles and newspaper reports to discuss during class.

25ème ANNIVERSAIRE DE LA METHODE FRENCH IN ACTION
A YALE UNIVERSITY
LE 30-31 OCTOBRE
Yale University a été le théâtre de la Réunion de membres importants à la création de la méthode
FRENCH IN ACTION et à la production de la vidéo qui a suivi.
C’était le 25ème anniversaire de la fameuse méthode créée par Professeur Pierre Capretz de Yale
University qui a changé la vie de bien d’étudiants dans leur apprentissage du français en leur offrant
une méthode où les conversations « coulaient de soi », n’étaient pas des fabrications artificielles mais
au contraire suivaient les rencontres amicales de Robert et Mireille dans le cadre merveilleux de Paris.
Pierre Capretz a innové en offrant une méthode apprenant le français en contexte où la grammaire ne
serait pas primordiale, à l’inverse des méthodes d’enseignements des langues étrangères que Robert
avait eues dans sa scolarité et qu’il décrit en ces termes : « Avec toutes ces conjugaisons, ces déclinaisons, ces listes de vocabulaire… c’est ridicule, ça ne sert à rien ! On apprend des règles de grammaire pendant quatre ans et on n’est pas capable de dire deux phrases compréhensibles !».
Il devenait facile pour les étudiants de s’imaginer dans la peau de Robert et de Mireille et de recréer
ces dialogues et même d’inventer des suites à leurs histoires.
Les deux acteurs principaux de la vidéo Valérie Allain dans le rôle de Mireille et Charles Mayer
dans celui de Robert, étaient également présents. Ils nous ont appris comment ils ont été retenus
pour ces rôles après un casting dans leur jeunesse (ils avaient 20 ans alors) parce qu’ils correspondaient totalement aux personnalités des personnages qui étaient sortis de l’imagination du Professeur
Pierre Capretz.
La méthode FRENCH IN ACTION a d’abord été lancée sous la forme écrite de fascicules polycopiés
et distribués semaines après semaines aux étudiants par le Professeur Capretz qui imaginait au fur et
à mesure que lui-même et ses assistants enseignaient les cours, les développements et péripéties
des rencontres de Mireille et Robert.
Barry Lydgate, qui a été un des premiers étudiants du professeur a tellement été accroché par
cette méthode qu’il a décidé d’en faire une vidéo. C’est à ce moment qu’on a recherché des acteurs
pour représenter tous les personnages de l’histoire non seulement Mireille et Robert mais aussi l’étudiant irrévérencieux, Michael, qui interrompt le Professeur Capretz en classe énonçant sa méthode
d’enseignement : «… Pour apprendre le français nous allons inventer une histoire… », et Michael de
réagir à cette proposition « Une histoire ? Mais pourquoi ? », et l’enquiquinante tante Georgette « qui
ne va pas fort » et rechigne sur tout ce qu’on lui apporte à manger au restaurant « Votre brie est trop
frais.. c’est de la craie… et votre camembert est trop fait ! Il pue ! C’est une infection ! » et aussi la
jeune Marie-Laure à l’intelligence vive, qui remarque les agissements d’un mystérieux homme en noir
qui suit nos héros, habillé parfois en fausse bonne sœur, et qui dit : « tante Amélie, elle, elle a de la
moustache. Mais elle, la bonne sœur, elle avait une moustache …comme ça ! »… et sa réplique favorite : « Mystères et boules de gomme » !
Pourquoi cette méthode de FRENCH IN ACTION est-elle toujours enseignée à l’université comme
au lycée? Eh bien ! C’est parce que cette histoire est contagieuse de fou rire, d’humour et de bons
mots! Elle vous agrippe et avant que vous ne l’imaginiez, vous êtes pris par les situations et les amis
que rencontrent Mireille et Robert et vous vous mettez vous-même à imaginer que vous êtes en situation de dialogue avec ces personnages et que vous êtes vous-même ces personnages.
Soudain, vous êtes vous-même, dans la salle de classe, ce Hubert, très huppé qui déclame avec
force geste: « Oh moi…non ! Je ne vais pas à la fac ! »
Quel est l’avenir de FRENCH IN ACTION ? Le Professeur Pierre Capretz est en train de faire une
troisième édition de la méthode qui verra le jour en 2012 ainsi qu’un DVD French in Interaction qui
permettra une recréation virtuelle de l’histoire.
Avec tous ces projets de modernisation de la méthode, il semblerait que FRENCH IN ACTION soit
en pleine santé et reprenne du poil de la bête tout comme Robert qui à l’article de la mort, dans le
dernier épisode de la méthode, se lève de son lit d’hôpital, s’arrache ses bandelettes de momie et
court au secours de Mireille ou est-ce elle-même qui secourt Robert ? Tant est-il qu’ils disparaissent
tous deux dans la fumée de l’incendie de l’hôtel Carlton et réapparaissent au coucher du soleil, au
bord d’une plage, main dans la main, prêts à s’embarquer dans de nouvelles aventures.
