Bob’s Hobby Shop - on the right track in Watervliet!
“I got my first train set when I was seven months old,” Bob
recalls. “My dad said I asked for it!” He finishes with a smile.
This was the beginning of what would later become one of
Michigan’s largest hobby shops.
Robert Taylor, or Bob, was born in Chicago in 1938 but was
raised in California for most of his youth. As he got older, his
family moved from California to Wisconsin and back but they
eventually moved to Michigan where he has lived since. During this time, however, Bob’s passion for trains never faded.
Bob has always collected trains. He even sold some trains
out of his parent’s garage when he was twelve. He also worked
as a plumber as he got older, which helped support his hobby.
Near the end of his twenty-three year plumbing career, Bob
wanted to open a hobby store full time so he purchased a
small store in 1966 and Bob’s Hobby & Collector’s Shop
opened. Bob’s was initially located in Hartford, in various
buildings along Main Street, from 1966 until 1983. During this
time frame Bob also opened B &E Raceway, a Commercial
Slot Car Track (1970) that also became extremely successful.
His hobby shop and slot racing track did well for many years,
but in 1983, Bob decided to close shop and sold his track to
his uncle.

Truly God is good to Israel, even to such as are of a
clean heart. But as for me, my feet were almost gone;
my steps had well nigh slipped. For I was envious at

I should offend against the generation of thy children.
When I thought to know this, it was too painful for
me; Until I went into the sanctuary of God; then
understood I their end. Surely thou didst set them in
slippery places: thou castedst them down into destruction. How are they brought into desolation, as in a
moment! they are utterly consumed with terrors. As
a dream when one awaketh; so, O Lord, when thou
