THE 2009/2010 SEASON IS MADE POSSIBLE IN PART BY THE GENEROSITY OF Joan and Irwin Jacobs November 10 - December 20, 2009 Mandell Weiss Theatre Sponsored by PRODUCTION SPONSORS Jeanne Jones and Don Breitenberg Sheri and Stuart Jamieson Sheila Potiker Production Co-Sponsors Drs. Edward and Martha Dennis Hanna and Mark Gleiberman Amy and Charles Spielman Dale and Mark Steele Barbara and Karl ZoBell WELCOME TO THE PLAYHOUSE Dear Friends, When I bumped into fellow director Jeff Calhoun (Deaf West’s Big River) in Los Angeles not too long ago, he told me that he and book writer Ivan Menchell (Chitty Chitty Bang Bang), along with composer Frank Wildhorn (Jekyll & Hyde) and lyricist Don Black (Sunset Boulevard), were working on a musical about Bonnie and Clyde. My interest piqued, I read the manuscript and listened to some of the songs, and immediately fell under its spell. The love story of Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow and their notorious Depression-era crime spree across the West Texas Dust Bowl, continues to capture the public’s imagination three-quarters of a century after their deaths. In a time when “no jobs — no money” left many Americans in dire straits, their exploits made front page headlines and catapulted them into the pantheon of celebrated public enemies. It was easy to become engrossed in the romance of these two passionate young lovers who bristled against the constraints of poverty and authority, dreaming of escape and the life that money could buy. But this musical creates a fascinating conundrum for the audience — the charismatic couple becomes more and more appealing as the bloody trail of violence and terror they leave behind becomes more and more disturbing. Bonnie & Clyde uncovers the untold story, brings new insights into the personal and public lives of this infamous pair, and breathes new life into this quintessential American story. Sincerely, Christopher Ashley Artistic Director UP NEXT at the playhouse RESERVE YOUR SEATS TODAY! Order tickets online at lajollaplayhouse.org or call the Box Office at (858) 550-1010. February 3 – February 28, 2009 Mandell Weiss Theatre Behind the red velvet curtain lies a topsyturvy world of surreal surprises, tricks and transformations, where dreams come to life and the impossible happens before your very eyes. Perfect for the whole family CO-SPONSORED BY P2 PERFORMANCES MAGAZINE A Tribute to the Jacobs Family La Jolla Playhouse is proud to announce the 2010 POP Tour By Rhiana Yazzie Original music by Gary Rue Directed by Sarah Rasmussen Touring TO SCHOOLS THROUGHOUT SAN DIEGO COUNTY February 1 – March 19, 2010 Like many San Diegans, Carmen and her family moved from Mexico for a better life. But unlike her classmates, Carmen speaks neither English nor Spanish: she speaks Mixtec, a language of the indigenous people of Oaxaca. Frustrated and confused, Carmen must become the hero of her own story, embracing her heritage while learning to make a home in a whole new world. From acclaimed Native American playwright Rhiana Yazzie, Chile Pod explores one young person’s journey to a place of belonging, and celebrates diversity, compassion and the wonders of the Oaxacan culture. P6 PERFORMANCES MAGAZINE BOARD OF TRUSTEES Dear Patrons and Friends, This wonderful production of Bonnie & Clyde, the final play in the Playhouse’s 2009/2010 subscription series, will take us toward the close of another year. As we approach the busy and festive holiday period ahead, when friends and family play an even larger role, many of us will also consider our philanthropic giving. And so with this traditional season of giving in mind, I’d like to suggest a few “gift ideas” that will benefit La Jolla Playhouse as well as those who receive them. You may not know that you can make a tax-deductible holiday gift to La Jolla Playhouse in honor of a friend or family member — perfect for that special someone who cares about the arts in our community. The “honoree” will receive a holiday card as notification of your thoughtful gesture, and both you and the honoree will be recognized as donors. Or, you can give a memorable gift to a deserving elementary school by contributing to our Adopt-A-School Fund, which brings the renowned POP Tour performance (a fully-produced original play commissioned especially for children) to schools without the means to pay the modest fee. Thanks to the Adopt-A-School program, the Playhouse brings the POP Tour to just about any school that requests it, introducing thousands more San Diego students to the joy of live theatre. For more information about these gift ideas, please contact Glenn Paris in the Development Office at (858) 550-1070 x109. Thank you in advance for considering the Playhouse in your end-of-year philanthropy, and it’s not too soon to wish you all the best for the holiday season! David P.
