september2015 - Central Church of God
Here we are winding down the hot summer already!
Primetime Post
I basically went from AC to AC! Hopefully, summertime has been wonderful
for you and yours.
Let’s recap our May and July get-togethers. Our special guest in May was Jean
Graham Ford. It was a delightful and inspirational evening. One of the things
Mrs. Ford said was, “I want Christ to be as much a part of me as my height
and weight.” She also posed this question,
“Do others know I want them to know
Him?” Along with Mrs. Ford, do we want
to be trusted to be holy in our hearts, our
temperaments and our lives? And are we
growing in Christ, allowing failures and
struggles to be our teachers? Hmmm ...
thought provoking! The evening was also
laced with some humorous and heartwarming stories about her family and her
beloved big brother, Dr. Billy Graham.
What a treat to have Jason Lovins Band at
our indoor picnic in July! Those young men
truly honor our Lord with the musical gifts and talents they’ve been given. We
clapped, laughed and worshipped the Lord along with these musicians and
perhaps shed a tear as Jason shared the Christ-redeeming story of his life. They
were such a blessing!
It wouldn’t seem right if I didn’t
mention Grace, our kitchen volunteers and the wonderful food
lovingly prepared for us. Over
this past year, I have gained insight as to what goes on behind
the scenes to make our Primetimer evenings so wonderful.
They all truly deserve our thanks,
love, respect and prayers. Could
we covenant to pray for all our
volunteers? And if God prods
your heart to become a volunteer,
please let me know. We’d love to
have you on board.
September 1st is right around the corner. Our guest will be Dan Truhitte, who
played the part of Rolfe in The Sound of Music. In celebration of its 50th
anniversary, Mr. Truhitte will sing some of the beautiful songs from that favorite musical and share some stories. He will share other songs as well and
end the evening with beloved
hymns of the faith. Be sure to get
your tickets now for this special
evening!

When you arrive at Central’s Family Life Center to
enjoy a Primetimers’ Dinner, Joyce Southern is one of
the first people you meet. Along with Geri Button, you
will see Joyce taking up tickets and greeting people.
She always takes the time to give a sincere smile and
a hello as she greets arrivals. If she can, she will stop
and talk with you.
Joyce came from a family of seven. She met Gene
Southern, a masonry contractor at Garr Tabernacle. He
was a widower, and in 1964 they were married in a
double wedding with her sister Ruth who married Bob
Bailey. Reverend Hannah Garr officiated at their wedding which was conducted at the old Garr Tabernacle. When she married Gene, she immediately became the mom of six children, the youngest being five-years old and the oldest
grown and married. Through those six children she now has nineteen grandchildren.
On their honeymoon, Joyce and Gene drove to Florida and then flew to the Bahamas. It was
the first time Gene had ever flown, and he was hooked. From then on, he was ready and
willing to go anywhere at any time. During their twenty years of marriage, Joyce and Gene
traveled to Russia with Alfred and Meryle Garr, and traveled with Chester and Margaret
Welch to Hawaii, the Holy Land, China, Japan, and Italy. On the day before their twentieth
wedding anniversary, Gene went to be with the Lord. Joyce talks fondly of the wonderful
times the two of them had. Joyce described Gene as “lots of fun, a man who loved to sing,
and was a great Christian Man.”
A few years after Gene passed away, Joyce attended her high school reunion for Derita
High School and ran into a former classmate named Fred Hunter. Fred’s wife had also
passed away. Joyce and Fred had dated some in high school so they decided to go out and
get reacquainted. They have been getting reacquainted now for the last twenty-seven years.
When asked how the Lord used her in ministry, Joyce answered, “I love Him, and I try to
serve Him the best I can.” If you know Joyce or have been around her much, you know
something that Joyce may not see herself: when you see Joyce, you see Jesus. As you talk
with Joyce, you can feel the love of Jesus through and through. Although she may not be in
a position of ministry, Joyce ministers to God’s people every time she talks with them. She’s
quite an example for all of us to follow.
Take the time to get to know Joyce Southern. You will enjoy her infectious
sense of humor and her loving and giving spirit. You will be glad you did, as she
is a wonderful blessing.

by Louise Douglas
Will a man rob God? Ye say, “Wherein have we
robbed you?” In tithes and offerings (Mal.3:8).
God has plans for your money. Tithes belong to God
– a tenth. The offering is your gift.
On one occasion Jesus stood by and watched as
people dropped their gifts in the treasury. Wealthy
people gave much; the little widow gave two mites.
Jesus said she gave more than all – she gave all she
had. We aren’t rewarded for what we give but for
what we have left.
There’s one more thing – alms. When whoever has
money and sees his brother has needs and shuts up
his bowels of compassion for him, how dwelleth the
love of God in him (1 John 3:17)? When you give
alms, don’t let your left hand know what your right
hand does (Matt. 6:3).
Does God care if we are rich? No, he doesn’t – if we
love him more than the money.
Someone asked (I think it was Henry Ford) “How
much money is enough?” The answer, “Just a little bit
more.”
Just remember: For what judgement ye judge, ye
shall be judged, and with what measure ye mete, it
will be measured to you again (Matt. 7:2).
To give to the needy
Sweet charity’s bread,
For “giving is living” the angel said.
“But must I keep giving again and again?” My
peevish, pitiless curt answer ran.
“Oh no,” said the angel, piercing me through, “Just
give ‘till the Master stops giving to you.”
