Norway New Issues – April 19, 2013 19 April 2013 - Tourist stamps Active Holidays is a good cue to the subjects of this year’s tourist stamps. The activities range from glacier climbing for experts and rafting for the brave to an easy climb up Gaustatoppen (Mount Gausta) for the ordinary tourist. / WPS Buffalo JuneJune / WPS Buffalo /4 /4 Non-Denominated, Dual Denominated and Julpost Stamps in Scandinavia Part IIIa –Finland and Iceland By John Salmi Finland On February 3, 1992 Finland issued its first two non-denominated stamps using the designations first and second class (luokka/klass – Finnish/Swedish). The stamps featured the wildflowers hepatica and globeflower as shown below. The stamps were perforated 13x12 ¾ and were gummed. The next definitive issues of this series featured the rosebay willowherb (1 kl), iris (2kl) and Labrador tea (1 kl). All of these issues were produced by die cutting with the last two having simulated perforations and with self- adhesive backings. They were issued on October 9, 1992, February 1st and June 14th, 1993 respectively. The first non-denominated commemorative stamps were issued on February 8, 1993 and features stamps designed around the friendship theme. The stamps gummed and perforated 14 and a copy of the mini-sheet with first day of issue cancels is shown above. To date, Finland has not issued any non-denominated stamps by destination or any Julpost denominated stamps. Iceland The small island nation of Iceland issued their first non-denominated stamp January 18, 2001 on a stamp commemorating the 75th anniversary of their coast guard (shown below). The word “Bréf” followed by “20 gr.” indicated that the stamp was to be used for domestic mail up to 20 grams in weight. On July 10, 2001 they overprinted Scott 873 shown below to provide a stamp for domestic mail up to 50 grams in weight. A Christmas stamp was issued on November 8, 2001 with the lower weight restriction of 20 grams but with the added text Jøl, 2001. This stamp sold for 42 krona and a denominated stamp of 55 krona provided the domestic 50 gram weight classification. The Iceland post office would continue to add weight classifications to their stamps as well, as shown in the 100 g and 1000 g domestic stamps from 2011 and the 100 g world denomination stamp shown below. June / WPS Buffalo / 5 Over the 7 years only a few non-denominated stamps were issued. On May 8, 2008 a personalized stamp was issued with the wording “Bréf Innanlands 50 g” which sold for 75 krona as a generic stamp and in sheets of 24 for 3120 krona if personalized. The added wording shows the post office’s intent to add a destination designation to the non-denominated weight specific stamps. In 2010, personalized stamps were issued for a personalized stamp to Europe (Bréf til Evropu 50 g) and to the rest of the world (Bréf utan Evropu 50 g). The Iceland post office would continue to add weight classifications to their stamps as well, as shown in the 100 g and 1000 g domestic stamps from 2011 and the 100 g world denomination stamp shown below. Another overprinted stamp was issued in 2012 when the 2008 50th anniversary of the cod war stamp Scott 1150 (shown below) was surcharged “B 50g innanlands”. Christmas stamps also added destination designations as shown on the 2011 issues shown below, with the domestic and to Europe wording. New Issues: Iceland Issue Date: May 2, 2013 Celebrating Nordia 2013 with four issues show the Northern Lights. June / WPS Buffalo / 6 Continued from Front Page The show will take place at the University of Manitoba in the multipurpose room of University Center. In addition to being a convention with registered delegates and inclusive social activities, the exhibition and dealer bourse will be open to the public. You will see an array of stamp exhibits and a court of honour showcasing some rare collectibles. In addition to the involvement of the WPS and the RPSC, the Scandinavian Collector’s Club and the Canadian Aerophilatelic Society will be present and active in exhibiting and holding meetings. The SCC is headquartered in Minnesota and as such we expect a good contingent of US residents to attend. For more information on both the WPS and the Royal 2013 Royale go to the web sites respectfully as wps.mb.ca and royal2013royale.com. The Winnipeg Philatelic Society was founded in 1900 and is the oldest stamp club operating in Western Canada. It currently has about 150 members and meets twice monthly September through June. The objectives of the club are to promote the hobby of stamp collecting in Manitoba. We have an active membership, support a junior stamp program, and hold an annual regional level show for exhibitors to earn their way to higher level exhibiting.
