Tribute to a great friend and teacher
It’s often said that ‘ignorance is bliss’ and I’m sure it’s often the case. When we don’t know what we don’t
know, it doesn’t really matter. It’s when we become aware that things could be different that the challenge
begins.
Little did I know in May 1980 when Ziggy was born, that she would be instrumental in helping me change my
way of life and how I think and feel about just about everything!
I was not confident (or probably competent) enough to ride her as a youngster, but at the age of nine she
moved back to live with me and I started riding her regularly, hacking out and doing lots of activities with the
local riding clubs including dressage, show jumping, cross country and the occasional team chase.
It was at these competitions that I realised that as nice a horse as she was (fell/thoroughbred cross), she wasn’t
performing as well as she probably could. This led me to ask myself why that might be. I had lessons with a
number of local instructors and although we made some improvements, she always seemed to find it difficult
to ‘come into an outline’.
I realised it must be something that I was doing or not doing that was causing this, but it wasn’t until I read
Mary Wanless’s ‘Ride With Your Mind’ books that it clicked – I needed to change how I was using my body to
help her change how she was using hers. Simple! If only….
I avidly read what Mary had written and tried putting into practice – trouble was I didn’t take stock of my
starting point clearly enough and ended up overdoing some bits and not doing others. Well that is natural
in learning, but it would have been much more helpful to have had ‘eyes on the ground’ to keep me on track
– and I’m sure Ziggy would have appreciated me accelerating my learning!
In the end I sought out Mary and booked in for some lessons with her. This sent me on a life-long quest of
working out what I need to do to help the horses I ride move correctly underneath me. This is so important
as correct biomechanical movement puts so much less stress on the muscles and joints, it helps the body last
much longer and much more comfortably! Obviously this is true for us too.
Working with Mary helped me focus on what my body was doing and how this was influencing the horses that
I ride. I found riding becoming much more meditative and a lovely was to de-stress from work.
As I looked at the horses and riders around me I started noticing their movement patterns and thinking ‘if
only they’d adjust this or that in their posture, it would help them and their horse enormously’. So in 1998 I
took the plunge, leaving my administrative role with Mars, and started teaching Mary’s ‘Ride With Your Mind’
principles and using Shiatsu to help horses (and humans) with physical, mental and emotional problems.
What a wonderful journey it is too – no two days are the same and I meet so many lovely horses and their
owners. I thank Ziggy from the bottom of my heart for being enough of a challenge to send me on my quest
for knowledge and to have the confidence to share it with those ready and willing to listen so that their
journey progresses too.
The great thing with Ziggy was that she was always one step ahead of me, so as soon as I’d got one bit right,
she’d be onto the next step so there was no way I could sit on my laurels thinking ‘I’ve got it’ as the ‘it’ was a
moving feast. My only sadness is that she’s graduated to horsey heaven before I’ve graduated from her school
of riding!

Jerry, Beagle dog around
10 months old. We have been told that Jerry is a chewer in the house and
is needing an experienced owner to train him out of this. He is good with
other dogs and around children. A very friendly dog that would benefit with
an owner which is experienced with this breed. Jerry is very lively and needs
lots of exercise.
Oliver, Boxer cross dog, around 1-2 years old. Oliver
needs an experienced owner to this breed or larger
sized dogs. At kennels we have had no problems
with him - he walked out with other dogs, walked
well on the lead and enjoys playing fetch. He was not good with all dogs
when rehomed and was nervous of some strangers therefore he needs
an experienced owner. We feel that Oliver should not be homed with
children. Please ask to see Oliver outside his kennel as he is not showing
himself off very well as he doesn’t like kennel life.
Marley, Staffie cross dog, around 4 years old. He is a very good family dog and is great around
the children, however he is a dog which cannot be let off lead as he
doesn’t get on with all dogs. He does walk well on the lead. Marley
needs a home with high fencing and someone who is at home most the
time as he prefers company. Someone willing to give him time to settle
and become confident with a new family will be able to get him past
this problem. He is a very loving dog who is just desperate for his own
family and not have to be afraid of being abandonded again.

What to Look For
When Buying Hay
FOR HORSES &
HUMANS
• Hay should smell fresh, be green/
brown in colour, and free of harmful
weeds such as ragwort, so if possible
know the source of the hay you
feed. Stored hay will gradually turn
from a newly baled green colour to a
lighter green/brown, which can be an
indication of its age.
• There should be no sign of dust or
mould. Hay that was baled too moist
and/or dense, or was rained on, will
most likely go mouldy. A horse that
breathes mould spores from hay
can quickly develop permanent lung
damage and even soaking the hay
won’t prevent this problem.
• Hay that is freshly baled (if you buy
off the field for example) will be warm
but dry feeling when you stick your
hand into it.
• Broken leaves indicate that hay was
baled too dry and hay that is yellow or
brown has been rained on. In either
case the nutritional quality will be
lower, though this is not a problem if
your horse is a good doer.
• Like people, some horses can have
an allergic reaction to chemicals such
as fertilisers, herbicides etc - so check
whether the hay you’re buying has
been treated.
• Feeding very cheap, poor/old hay
may prove to be a false economy if it
causes problems needing a vet visit.
