TripAdvisor, the world’s largest travel site, announced its Travelers’ Choice awards for Islands. The awards honor over 100 islands worldwide - Within that highly coveted list Hilton Head Island took the 5th spot in the U.S. Based upon millions of reviews posted by consumers on TripAdvisor, the island was named to the esteemed list, “Long known as a golfer’s paradise, Hilton Head Island is heaven for any type of sports enthusiast...In fact, the island plays host to many prestigious sporting events throughout the year. All of it surrounded by sunny beaches and lush greenery.” Your Chamber worked with U.S. News & World Report contributor Erin Gifford who penned the “4 Golf Getaways to Take This Spring” April 10th roundup which touted the island as leading the list of the country’s best golf destinations. A “paradise for golfers” the island features two dozen golf courses and top-notch accommodations, with packages that make booking a golf vacation easy and enjoyable on and off the course. Palmetto Dunes Oceanfront Resort’s Stay and Play getaway was spotlighted as well as The Westin Hilton Head Island Resort & Spa’s Golf & Spa package. U.S. News & World Report reaches 7.4 million unique viewers per month. Huffington Post readers also had a chance to enjoy the golf getaway article, which was picked up online. Dye went smaller...Toss in mossdraped oaks and an iconic lighthouse and you have Harbour Town.” The golf publication reaches over 1.4 million readers. Island Renaissance: Your chamber’s continued efforts to get the word out about the tremendous reinvestment that’s happening in the Lowcountry not only to our leisure travelers, but the corporate and group audience as well, has garnered national press. Visitors escaping the cold arrived earlier this year and the facts reflect this. • Occupancy was up a very healthy 10.8% for the first three months of the year compared to last year. • The all-important industry benchmark of Revenue Per Available Room or RevPAR, was up 14.9% meaning visitors were coming and spending. Source: Destimetrics/Smith Travel Research Reservations on the Books were on the Rise - For months, AprilSeptember, reservations for home and villas were up 4.1% over the same time period for 2014. RevPAR was up 8.0%. Source: Destimetrics Real Estate Ramping Up - The number of villa sales increased by 20% in the first quarter 2015 as compared to the same time-frame last year. Median and average home prices were up both on the island and the mainland. A promising 28% of recent pending home sales were over $500K. This is nearly double other competitive markets like Charleston and Myrtle Beach. CHAMBER NEWS Ariana Pernice has joined the Hilton Head Island-Bluffton Chamber of Commerce as vice president of the Visitor and Convention Bureau. Pernice brings over 12 years of experience in marketing, management and branding in a number of industries. Pernice served with JetBlue Airways as regional marketing manager for New York and New Jersey, overseeing marketing strategy development and implementation. Pernice also served with Blink Fitness in Manhattan, NY, in marketing and public relations, where she managed strategic planning, cross-functional communication, social media and target marketing, working with national media including Wall Street Journal, U.S. News and World Report and Good Housekeeping. Chamber Garners Award of Excellence The Hilton Head Island-Bluffton Chamber of Commerce Visitor and Convention Bureau has been honored with the prestigious Corporate & Incentive Travel magazine’s 2015 Award of Excellence. Honorees are chosen by the magazine’s industry readers who voted for outstanding destinations that best served their corporate meetings and incentive travel programs during the past year. The accolade is awarded to visitor and convention bureaus, resorts, hotels and conference centers for professionalism, hospitality excellence and outstanding service to meeting planners. Winners will be featured in the November special awards issue of Corporate & Incentive Travel, reaching over 40,000 meeting professionals. USCB was declared in full compliance with the standards set by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges. In addition, the USCB academic team earned the coveted top 100% rating, a very rare achievement among colleges and universities. Le Spa of Sea Pines has launched its “Le Spa Angels” program to honor an outstanding individual monthly with a complimentary massage, pedicure, and lunch. Community Foundation of the Lowcountry recently awarded over $318,000 in grants to seven nonprofit organizations for projects that positively impact our local communities: BlufftonJasper County Volunteers in Medicine, Child Abuse Prevention Association, Foundation for Educational Excellence, Island School Council for the Arts, Junior Jazz Foundation, Programs for Exceptional People, The Outside Foundation, and a portion of the “Project Star” online video library created by Beaufort County teachers, will be funded through the grant. Hilton Head Hospital received the top grade in The Leapfrog Group’s Fall 2014 Safety Score, representing the hospital’s continued commitment to delivering safe, high-quality healthcare services to the Hilton Head, Bluffton and Okatie communities. Golf, Etc. has been named to Golf Digest’s list of “America’s 100 Best Clubfitters” for 2015/16, featured in the magazine’s May issue. Parker’s, which operates 36 convenience stores in Georgia and South Carolina, proceeds came from its “Fueling the Community” program which gives one cent of every gallon of gas sold the first Wednesday of each month to local schools.
