SUMMER 2014 ::
1
Pop into your local library to Fizz, Boom and Read your way
through the summer! Readers of all ages will explore all things
science-related during this year’s Atlanta-Fulton Public Library
System Summer Reading Program.
Fizz, Boom, Read! Spark a
Reaction this Summer!
Find activities throughout this newsletter that go Fizz and
Boom including fun and edible science experiments,
magicians, visiting scientists, interactive games,
Grossology, nature explorations and more.
Summer Reading fun can be had by all ages beginning
June 1 through August 1. For our very youngest, have
summer reading fun by looking at picture books with
your children who have not yet learned to read and
point out people, animals and objects in the pictures.
Read to your children and ask them to “read” to you.
Children who sign up for the reading program keep
their minds active and enter school in the fall ready
to learn and ready to succeed. Reading throughout
the summer benefits students by helping retain
skills learned during the school year.
It’s easy to join us – just come into the library to register.
Children read 10 books and teens read 5.
Teens this year have their own special theme:
“Spark a Reaction,” and there are programs galore
that are hot and cool for just this age!
Your librarian is also more than happy to help
you find books that are just right for every age group.
We hope that you and your family enjoy our free
programs and reading through the summer and
discovering treasures throughout the library. Registration
for “Fizz, Boom, Read!” begins on June 1. For more
information, call your local branch or explore more at
our website, www.afpls.org.
Boom on into your local library today. Sign-up forms are
available at every library branch, and are distributed at
schools throughout Fulton County. We look forward to
seeing you in our libraries this summer!

The Center for
Puppetry Arts and
Our Libraries
This summer children ages two to four and their adult caregivers
can experience fun with puppets when the Center for Puppetry
Arts comes to six of our branches with their “Preschool Puppetry
Playshops.” The goal of this program is to support early childhood
literacy with the objective of providing an interactive arts experience
while addressing a number of curriculum standards.
These workshops enhance motor skills, increase language and social
skills, and develop self-confidence. Programs feature reading activities,
songs, fingerplays and puppet-making. High-energy and engaging,
the workshop experience supports early childhood literacy by bringing
to life one of three terrific books for early readers and celebrates
creativity and the arts in developmentally-appropriate ways.
The “Preschool Puppetry Playshops” are made possible from an outreach
grant awarded to the Center for Puppetry Arts from Fulton County Arts
& Culture to provide direct outreach to residents in North, South and
unincorporated Fulton County. Our libraries that will host the programs
this summer include the East Point, Northeast/Spruill Oaks, Northside,
Sandy Springs and Southwest Branches. These programs are free and
open to the public. See listings at the right for full details.
Don’t be disappointed if you are older than 4! Library patrons of
all ages can experience the Center for Puppetry Arts with our yearround “Passport to Puppetry” Library Loan Program. Thanks to a
great partnership between the Center for Puppetry Arts and Georgia’s
Public Libraries, residents with a valid Atlanta-Fulton Public Library
card can check out the “Passport to Puppetry” at any Atlanta-Fulton
Public Library location.
The “Passport to Puppetry” is valid for up to four free museum
admissions—a potential savings of up to $33 per family. Parties with
children must include at least one adult. The museum provides
educational fun with more than 350 puppets from around the world,
highlighting the fact that every civilization on our planet has its own
unique form of puppetry tradition.
The museum at the Center
for Puppetry Arts is open
Tuesdays through Sundays
with hours varying upon
day and programming.
In addition to four free
admissions, the “Passport to
Puppetry” also entitles library
patrons to attend certain
Family Series performances
at the Center and/or participate
in a Create-a-Puppet Workshop
at a 25% discount, when
space is available.

Green
Up Your Life:
Start at Your Library
Did you know that any one of our 33 libraries
can help you go green this summer? If you want
to start or help your garden (even if it is a small
container garden on your patio), learn to tell
good bugs from bad, or green up your lawn, the
library is the perfect place to start.
Along with thousands of books, DVDs, audiobooks, magazine and newspapers that focus
on gardening, patrons can access our public computers in each branch to search online for
even more pertinent information or come in to one of our branches this summer for one of
many programs on starting, keeping or bettering your yard and garden!
The Atlanta-Fulton Public Library System and Fulton County Cooperative Extension are
both departments within Fulton County, and are the perfect neighbors to come together in
helping you live a healthier lifestyle. Gardening is fun and it’s good for your health in many
ways. Libraries provide public access to a wide range of reliable, credible and understandable
health and gardening information, and Cooperative Extension is the go-to service for
“pollinating the lives of Fulton County residents with research-based information in the
areas of agricultural and environmental sciences, 4-H and youth, and family and consumer
sciences.” When our services join forces, you win!
