How Beaver County was named
The name “Beaver” was given to the county from the stream and
town called at the time of its earliest settlers, and the town had been
named for the stream. As to the origin of the name of the stream itself, we need not be in any doubt. It was a translation into English
of the Indian word for beaver, the much-prized animal after which
the local Indians had named the stream. The Delawares called the
stream Amockwi-sipu, or literally, “beaver stream.” They gave this
name to the creek because of its being a favorite home of the beaver.
River), and the English when they arrived, called it the same name.
Before the mapping of the town and outlets at the mouth of the
stream, under the Act of September 28, 1791, the point was known
by the Indian names of Sawkunk and Shingoe’s Town, later by the
English as “the old French town.” Later it was called McIntosh, from
the fort there and the town that was created by legislative action
was called Beaver. And it was determined to be county seat of the
new county in its beginning stage of development. Thus, it was natural that when the time came for the creation of the county, it should
receive a name associated with the most important stream and locality belonging distinctively to it’s territory, and was accordingly
called Beaver.
(Source: History of Beaver County, Volume 1, 1904)
The French, who were the first whites to reach this region, merely
translated the Indian name for the stream calling it, as we have
learned from a map in Pouchot’s memoirs, River au Castor, (Beaver

This Old House Magazine names Beaver the
Best 2009 Old House Neighborhood in Pennsylvania
By: Keith Pandolfi, Natalie Rodriguez, Chaeun Park, and Dana Schultz, This Old House online
The housing boom may be over,
but the This Old House editors
have tracked down 51 great neighborhoods that have promising futures and homes that truly deserve
a long-term commitment. These
places may not be on your radar, but deserve to be,
places overflowing with beautiful, architecturally significant, or even historic houses with special appeal to
old-house-loving buyers.
They also looked for places where people are happy
to lend a hand on a neighbor’s home improvement
project; where spur-of-the-moment porch parties are
among resident’s favorite summer activities; where
amenities, such as restaurants, hardware stores, or hiking trails, are just a short walk or drive away, and where
people come together for special events, whether it’s
a holiday festival or a house tour; a 4th of July parade
or a crisp fall night outside watching a local college or
high school football game.
With the help of PreservationDirectory.com, neighborhood groups, real estate agents, and preservation
0societies, This Old House magazine compiled their
list of the best places to track down, fix up, and fall
head over heals for…and Beaver was the choice in
Pennsylvania!
Beaver, Pennsylvania
About thirty miles northeast of Pittsburgh, Beaver,
was once home to the affluent managers of nearby
steel plants. Today this Ohio River town is reinventing
itself as a haven for small-town-America lovers, though
it’s still a popular bedroom community for those commuting to Pittsburgh. Beaver seems like the kind of
town where New Urbanists are trying to create their
own version of Celebration, Florida, with plenty of
parks and Main Street-type businesses along Third
Street. Everything is in walking distance; the entire
neighborhood is roughly four square miles.
The Houses
Tudor Revivals and brick Queen Annes are dominant, but a massive 1860 Italian-villa-style house, formerly home to the president of Beaver College (which
has relocated), was recently on the market for just
$100,000. At press time, an 1890’s three-story turreted
Queen Anne was listed at $200,000.
Third Street in Beaver.
Why Buy Now?
Property values have stayed above average here compared with the rest of the state, and the public schools
are ranked among Pennsylvania’s best. Despite the
economic downturn, Pittsburgh’s economy has remained relatively steady thanks to its health care and
education industries.
