Coronis
Abloy Oy is one of the leading manufacturers
of locks, locking systems and architectural
hardware in the world. They are also the
world’s leading developer of products in the
field of electromagnetic locking technology.
After studying other wireless options, Abloy
chose Coronis as its technology partner and
supplier. Abloy’s R&D team worked directly
with integration specialists at Coronis to
implement Wavenis technology for the
new electromagnetic lock system. Coronis
customized Abloy’s firmware applications
and optimized the footprint for specific
PCB boards and connectors to meet strict
specifications. The team also matched
network layer capabilities to Abloy’s
applications, and designed and created a
customized antenna for the locking system.

Abloy had already created a line of
electromagnetic locks that users can
open with a unique infrared remote control
device. The company wanted to enhance
the remote control device so that it could
not only open the lock right in front of user,
but also to give users control over all the of
their other locks easily. There was no way to
support this feature with infrared technology.
Abloy’s vision was to evolve the first
solution by integrating wireless technology,
enabling the company to meet growing
market demand for total control over all the
electromagnetic locks in a given building, but
they did not have an appropriate technology
solution to make the new product a reality.

team was a big advantage for us,” says
Arto Koponen, Project Manager for Abloy
Oy. “Our expertise lies in the lock and all
the systems that it comprises. Once we
understood what Wavenis technology could
do, and that it had already been deployed in
products developed by our other partners,
it was an easy choice to make. Coronis
engineers were an integral part of the Abloy
development team, enabling our own
engineers to focus on what we do best. The
overall process took 18 months, and would
have been much longer without the Coronis
team.”

target constraints.
The company is also participating in
Aresa 2 standardization initiatives
within the IPv6 community.
Coronis supplies network nodes for
the SensLab platform, enabling
Aresa 2 partners to work on
proof-of-concept development for
innovative security algorithms in a real
wireless environment.
Aresa was originally a national initiative led by Orange Lab. The project focused on largescale wireless sensor networks distributed throughout the area being monitored. The
key goal of this research was to achieve low energy consumption for the overall system
and its communications, which is why Wavenis® wireless technology was chosen as
the data link between the wireless sensor devices. Event-driven and asynchronous
protocols were proposed for self-configuration, self organization and data aggregation
within the network.
As the project continued and evolved into Aresa 2, additional goals were included
to connect these dynamic wireless sensor networks to the IP world in a secure and
energy-efficient manner.

AquaCity is a universal metering system
for the reading and control of water and/or
city gas supply. This system is capable of
reading meters made by any manufacturer,
those already installed or those being
installed in either households located in
cities or in rural areas.
The installation and the implementation
of the aquaCity’s metering system is
a major project in which an advanced
communications infrastructure has been
developed, which until now, was nonexistent. Due to the size of the project
numerous specialized companies from
different sectors have been involved, such
as: communication companies, installation
companies, specialist maintenance
companies and aquaCity’s managers and
installers.
To offer a solution to the needs associated
with the reading and control of water/
gas meters, aquaCity’s metering system
proposes a communications network
via Wavenis radio frequency amongst
other communication methods, whose
equipment consist of a fixed structure of
up to “6 Levels”. By means of this network
it is possible to gain access to carry out a
reading and configure all the devices that
are part of the system.
Each of the devices that belong to the
aquaCity’s communication structure is
capable ofdirecting the flow of information
to other levels; hence, the creation of long
range fixed networks.

By integrating various home automation
protocols, notably from smart meters

The Domtis Dombox aggregates data

Launched in Grenoble in 2010, Sencity is a consortium seeking to improve the quality
of living in cities while respecting the environment. This involves creating a city-wide
ecosystem of services, based on participating partner technologies, products, services
and expertise, in order to better manage relevant information, such as gas and water
consumption, air and noise quality, etc. At this point in the experiment, water and gas
consumption data is collected from some fifty homes in Grenoble using a wireless sensor
infrastructure that leverages the Wavenis low-power and long-range connectivity protocol.

A worldwide leader in electrical
automation and lighting control systems
for residential, industrial, energy and
infrastructure markets needed to enhance
their existing lighting fixture product line
to meet customer needs, notably early
technology adopters. These customers
wanted wireless lighting solutions that
could be used to retrofit existing homes
as well to lower cabling costs for new
construction projects.
The company understood their new
lighting offering had to be based on a
wireless solution. At the same time it
needed to work with Konnex, a European
wireless standard for home and building
automation.
The client also had a requirement to
maintain control over the design and
development process, with its own design
and production center leading the project.
They were looking for a real development
partner, not just a vendor capable of
supplying a specific technology.
Another very important factor was cost. If
the cost of developing the new product line
did not demonstrate a positive ROI, with
final per-unit cost for finished products
within a specific range, the project would
not be approved internally by our client.
After studying the challenge for some
time, they reached the conclusion that
they did not have the technology required
to maket the line possible internally.

technology internally to make the product
line on their own.
When the client came to Coronis with this
particular set of needs, we determined
together that an easy solution would be
to license our Wavenis technology and
leverage the engineering support and
expertise offered as part of the overall
Wavenis License Package. Wavenis
embedded technology solutions could
satisfy the need to balance development
costs with fast time-to-market for
product integration. The Wavenis License
Package gave our client the most flexibility
and control over system design and RF
integration to meet their product goals.
This package also ensured that Wavenis
technology integration met specified
technical and power requirements.
Certified by Coronis, the resulting PCB
designed by our client lit the way for a
complete line of customized wireless
lighting products based on a single costeffective microcontroller that handles
their application and the Wavenis
wireless connectivity stack. The Konnex
application protocol was implemented
on top of Wavenis, with a light firmware
bridge added to map Wavenis commands
to Konnex.
Wavenis-enabled devices can reach up to
10 years of battery life on a single CR2032
battery, offering ranges up to 80 meters
indoors in real-world conditions without
using repeaters.
