VehicleRecyclability • Wedesignourvehiclestobeasrecyclableandrecoverableasisfeasible,followingISOstandardsanddevelopinginternalstandardsto gaincommonbenefitsacrossglobalregions. • Onaverage,ourvehiclesareapproximately85%recyclableand95%recoverablebyweight. • Weworkwiththevehicledismantlingindustrytohelpensurethemajorityofmaterialissalvagedandcanberecycledorreusedinnew vehiclesorotherconsumerproducts. BusinessCase • We’vegenerated$2.5Binrevenuethroughvariousrecyclingactivitiesfrom2007to2010andhavegeneratedasmuchas$1billion fromrecyclingandreuseofbyproductsinrecentyears. • Forthelast15years,wehavebeenusingaresourcemanagementsystemthatallowsustoviewallofourwastestreamsandmanage theminthebestpossibleway.Thissinglesystemincludesallbyproductsandtreatsthemasvaluablecommodities. • Wetrack15,549wastestreamsinourplantsgloballyandgatherapproximately10,471pointsofwastedatamonthly. UpdatedJune2016 ReducingWaterUse • Between2005and2010,wereducedwateruseby32%onapervehicle-producedbasisatourfacilitiesworldwide. • Wecommittedtoreducewaterintensityby15%by2020overa2010baselineatourglobalfacilities. From2010to2015,wereducedit10%. • Whetherit’sreusingwaterinpretreatmentprocessesinourpaintshopsorcapturingrainwatertofeedmanufacturingequipment coolingtowersatvariousplants,wearecommittedtoresourceconservationthroughoutouroperations. • Wesharebestpracticesgloballyandapproachwatermanagementatthelocalfacilitylevel.Sincewaterissuesvaryconsiderablyby region,eachofouroperatingregionsestablishesannualinternalgoalsforwaterusereduction. • Werealizewatersavingsthroughavarietyofinitiatives,suchasusingreverseosmosis–aprocessthatpusheswaterthroughafilterto eliminateparticles–tofilterwaterfromrecycledtreatedwastewaterfortoiletflushingandindustrialusesatourLEED-certifiedengine plantinJoinville,Brazil.It’sthefirstapplicationofitskindatanautomotivefacilityandsavestheplanttheequivalentofnineOlympicsizedswimmingpools–22.9millionlitersperyear. • Wealsohaveinitiativesunderwayatourfacilitieslocatedinsomeoftheworld'smostwater-starvedareas. o InSouthAfrica,waterconservationinitiativesareintegratedintoourtwoplantsinPortElizabeth.Twofull-dayworkshopswith employeeshaveidentified7,360kilolitersofwater-withdrawalsavingstodate. o OurRamosArizpeComplexinthewater-stressedregionofnorthernMexicofeaturesathree-acreartificiallagoonasapartof itsfiltrationandpurificationsystem.Inadditiontorecyclingfacilitywaterthelagoonservesasanimportantnaturalhabitatfor wildlife,providingwetlandformigratingandlocalbirds.OurSanLuisPotosiplantincentralMexicooperatesazeroliquidwater dischargetreatmentfacility,reducinguseofgroundwaterandsavingabout400gallonsofwaterpervehiclebuilt. o EmployeeengagementisabigpartofourZaragozafacility’sconservationefforts.TheSpanishplantregularlyshareswater conservationtipswithemployeesonwaystheycanhelpcontributetoZaragoza’sprogressbyusingwatermoreefficiently.The planthasalsoorganizedatwo-dayoutingthatincludedatourofenvironmentallyprotectedlandsandacanoetripdownthe EbroRiver. WatershedEducation • OurGMGREENprogram(GlobalRiversEnvironmentalEducationNetwork),now inits26thyear,encouragescommunityengagementbyhelpingyouthbetter understandtheirimpactonlocalwatersheds. • Itisthelongest-runningconservationeducationprogrambyanyautomaker, impacting150,000youththroughhands-onlearningsinceitsinceptionin1989. • Theinitiativecomprises50ofourfacilities,includingallofourU.S.andCanadian manufacturingplants.We’renowincludingdealersintheprogramtofurther spreadtheimpact. • Wematchmorethan12,600studentseachyearwithGMmentorstoretrieve, testandanalyzewatersamples,thenchannelfindingsintoasustainableaction planaddressingwaterqualityintheircommunity.GMGREENisdesignedto sharpenproblem-solvingskills,improveknowledgeofscienceandthe environment,andencouragecommunityinvolvementthroughhands-onlearningexperiences. • GMGREENisapartnershipbetweenGM,thenonprofitEarthForce,andlocalschoolsandconservationgroupsinGMcommunities.In additiontovolunteers,GMandtheGMFoundationprovidefinancialsupporttothenationalandlocalprograms. o In2015,GMmentorsvolunteeredinwatermonitoringevents,classroomvisitsandstudent-drivenwatershedimprovement projects.Theprogramengaged50GMfacilitiesand17,419students.
