Brown is one of the foremost innovative thinkers, team builders, and leader developers in the United States Army today. LTG Brown was commissioned into the infantry in 1981 after graduating from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. During his time at West Point, he was the captain for the men’s basketball team and played under the legendary Mike Krzyzewski – the winningest coach in college basketball history – where he learned the essential fundamentals of leadership. ROBERT BROOKS BROWN LIEUTENANT GENERAL, U.S. ARMY COMMANDING GENERAL U.S. Army Combined Arms Center and Fort Leavenworth, Kansas COMMANDANT U.S. Army Command and General Staff College DEPUTY COMMANDING GENERAL FOR COMBINED ARMS U.S. Training and Doctrine Command HONORARY DEGREE DOCTOR OF PUBLIC SERVICE His 34-year military career extends from the continental U.S. and the Caribbean to assignments in Europe and the Pacific region, several tours in the Pentagon, and two tours of combat in Iraq. LTG Brown’s leadership experience ranges from platoon level to Corps. Known for his passionate commitment to soldiers, it has never been uncommon for him to show up unannounced in the mess hall or at training areas for a chance to get to know his soldiers one-on-one. His first leadership roles were platoon leader and company commander in mechanized infantry units at Fort Carson, Colorado. He later served as battalion commander of a mechanized infantry battalion at Fort Hood, Texas, and during this time was a task force commander during Operation Joint Forge in Bosnia-Herzegovina. Throughout his career, LTG Brown has held multiple key staff positions, including plans officer at U.S. Army Pacific, aide-de-camp and assistant executive officer to the vice chief of staff of the Army, executive assistant to the Pacific Command commander, and more. In 2004, LTG Brown took command of the 1st Brigade, 25th Infantry Division and led the Stryker Brigade into Iraq. During this time, he led the mission to successfully secure the first-ever democratic vote for national elections in Mosul, Iraq. 10 Returning to Iraq as deputy commanding general for support of the 25th Infantry Division in 2008, he served as a key leader in promoting peace between Kurdish, Sunni, and Shiite populations. Transitioning overseas to Heidelberg, Germany, in 2010, he served as chief of staff, U.S. Army Europe and deputy commander, U.S. Army NATO. Shortly after, he was appointed commander of Fort Benning, Georgia, and the Maneuver Center of Excellence, the Army’s hub for training and development of all infantry and armor soldiers. LTG Brown was then assigned to Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Washington, where he served as commanding general of I Corps, supporting an adaptive, agile, and technologically superior force regionally focused in the Pacific. There, he was responsible for over 120,000 personnel and generated a revenue exceeding $6 billion. Since February 2014, he has served as commander of the U.S. Army Combined Arms Center and Fort Leavenworth, Kansas – often referred to as the “intellectual center of the Army.” Simultaneously, he serves as commandant, U.S. Army Command and General Staff College and deputy commanding general for Combined Arms, U.S. Training and Doctrine Command. At the Combined Arms Center, LTG Brown leads the synchronization of leader development across the Army, the management of the Army’s training support and training development enterprises, and the development and integration of the doctrine the U.S. Army uses to fight and win our nation’s wars. As Combined Arms Center commander, LTG Brown holds responsibility for the education of soldiers and Department of the Army civilians worldwide – about 155,000 educational programs and courses daily, more than the three largest universities in the U.S. combined. As commander of Fort Leavenworth, he is responsible for over 98,000 personnel. His education includes a Bachelor of Science from the U.S. Military Academy, a master’s degree in education from the University of Virginia, and a master’s degree in national security and strategic studies as a distinguished graduate of the National Defense University. LTG Brown is married to his high school sweetheart, Patti. They have three daughters, Kelly, Kristen, and Brooke, and two granddaughters. 11 2014–2015 GRADUATES “…throughout the world…University of Maryland University College enables our military personnel to advance their education and to earn college degrees…This is a splendid investment and I know it will continue for the good of our young people and the strength of the nation.” Dwight D. Students may earn the distinctions of cum laude, magna cum laude, and summa cum laude, to signify graduation with honor, high honor, and highest honor, respectively. Sometimes called graduation honors, these traditional academic designations are awarded at the time a baccalaureate degree is conferred. The distinction of cum laude honors is conferred on those students with a cumulative grade point average of 3.8 to 3.9, magna cum laude is conferred on those students with a grade point average of 3.901 to 3.999, and summa cum laude is conferred on those students with a grade point average of 4.0. Students who have earned these honors wear cords as part of their academic regalia for the commencement ceremony: white cords indicate cum laude honors, blue cords indicate magna cum laude, and gold cords indicate summa cum laude. UMUC is proud to recognize all honors candidates for the Class of 2015. Summa Cum Laude Magna Cum Laude Cum Laude As final action cannot always be taken by the time this program is printed, the list of honors and May candidates is tentative. University of Maryland University College reserves the right to add and withdraw names once all final grade point averages have been calculated. 30 BACHELOR’S DEGREE GRADUATES UNIVERSITY OF MARYLAND UNIVERSITY COLLEGE BS BS BS BS BS BS BS BS BS BS BS BS BS BS BS BS BS BS BA BS BS BS BS BS BS BS BS Lupe Abundis Jose Luis Acevedo Stephanie Acevedo Crystal Nicole Acuna Jack Thomas Adams John Paul Adams Juan Carlos Adorno Stephen Patrick Aldred Anthony James Alegria Jr. Althea Alexander Jonace Alexander Meagan Allen Begoña Alvarez Dorado Ilaria Francesca Alzamora Sander E. BENTLEY MEMORIAL AWARD The Bentley Memorial Award was established in 1983 and is presented each year in honor of Colonel William C. Bentley, the first student to earn a University of Maryland University College degree through study in Europe. In addition to being the first Europe campus graduate, Colonel Bentley played a key role in bringing UMUC to Europe. The award is presented annually to the UMUC Europe baccalaureate graduate with the highest cumulative grade point average. 2014–2015 WILLIAM C. BENTLEY MEMORIAL AWARD RECIPIENT “Everyone can rise above their circumstances and achieve success if they are dedicated to and passionate about what they do.” – Nelson Mandela These words have inspired Ms. Dessislava “Dessi” Donovan for many years and signify her greatest strength: perseverance. Born and raised in Sofia, Bulgaria, Ms. Donovan comes from humble beginnings and is the first in her family to earn a university degree. DESSISLAVA E. DONOVAN At a young age, work had to take precedence over higher education, and despite having been an excellent student, she worked at a hotel after high school to support her family. “My father always wanted me to go to a university to study because it was his dream that he was never able to pursue,” she said. Everything changed when she met her husband, an American Department of State diplomat in Bulgaria. Once they married, she began living the diplomat lifestyle – moving every few years to different U.S. embassies at exotic locations around the world. In 2008, she began her degree in South Korea with UMUC Asia, where she completed her Associate of Arts. She then moved to Manama, Bahrain, where she took as many on-site classes as possible, side-by-side with U.S. Navy sailors, before continuing her studies online. Currently, she lives in Pretoria, South Africa. Ms. Donovan earned her bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, which she became interested in after being inspired by a UMUC criminal justice instructor and former FBI agent who taught from his own experience. After growing up in a communist country and becoming an American citizen, she found learning about American law and freedoms fascinating. Her dream is to work in government or law enforcement in the future. While studying and moving around the world, Ms. Donovan was a full-time mom, raising three children and often working part time at the embassies. It was a difficult juggling act, since she refused to give less than 100% to each aspect of her life. Her oldest son, currently an active-duty airman, is just beginning his bachelor’s degree and considering studying criminal justice – undoubtedly inspired by witnessing his mother’s accomplishment and determination to always give her best. “One of the most satisfying factors about completing my degree is being a role model for my children,” said Ms. Donovan, “they’ve shared this journey with me.” 41 42 ABOUT UMUC ACADEMIC DEGREES A degree is awarded for successfully completing a course of study. U.S. colleges and universities now confer more than 1,600 types of academic degrees. The first degree recorded in history was a doctorate conferred by the University of Bologna in the middle of the twelfth century. Originally, the doctor’s and master’s degrees were used interchangeably, each indicating that the holder was qualified to give instruction to students. The bachelor’s, or baccalaureate, degree indicated only entrance upon a course of study preparatory to a doctorate or mastership. Gradually, however, the bachelor’s degree came to signify the successful completion of a level of advanced study preparatory to the higher degrees. In North America, the Bachelor of Arts (BA) was first conferred in 1642, on the nine young men who constituted the first graduating class of Harvard College. Yale conferred its first Bachelor of Arts in 1702; Princeton, in 1748; William and Mary, in 1753; Pennsylvania, in 1757; and Columbia, in 1758. 44 The Bachelor of Science (BS) was awarded to four graduates of Harvard’s class of 1851; they were probably the first from any institution to receive that degree. Women in the United States first received baccalaureate degrees in 1841, when three women graduated from Oberlin College. The master’s degree has passed through various stages since its origin in the Middle Ages. During most of the first two centuries of U.S. collegiate history, the only master’s degree awarded was the classic Master of Arts (MA). The University of Michigan offered the first Master of Science (MS) in 1858. Throughout the nineteenth century, the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree gained status in both Europe and North America. The first earned doctorates in the United States were awarded to three students at Yale in 1861. The Johns Hopkins University was founded for graduate studies in 1876, after which more universities developed doctoral programs in varied disciplines but with requirements similar to the PhD. THE MACES The maces carried by the Student Marshal and the Faculty Marshal were first used in UMUC’s 1962 commencement exercises. Each mace bears the shield from the State of Maryland Seal. The design is the Calvert and Crossland family arms quartered. Lord Baltimore, first Proprietor of the Colony of Maryland, was a Calvert, and his mother was a Crossland. Surmounting the shield is the ducal coronet of the Calverts. These maces are symbols of the authority of the University System of Maryland as derived from the People of the State and delegated by them to the University System’s Board of Regents. When the president confers academic degrees, he is acting for the Board and the People of the State of Maryland. 45 ACADEMIC DRESS The gowns worn by participants in the procession indicate which academic degrees they hold. The gown is usually black, but some universities use colored gowns. The style of sleeve connotes the level of achievement: regular sleeves indicate the associate’s and bachelor’s degree; longer, full sleeves, the master’s degree; and fuller, round sleeves the doctorate. The gown worn by those who have earned a doctorate is usually faced with black velvet and has three bars of the same material across the sleeves; in some cases, the color of the velvet relates to the field in which the degree is gained. Hoods are lined with the colors of the school granting the degree. The velvet border of the hood indicates the discipline. The hood for the doctorate has distinguishing panels and is longer than that for the master’s degree. Hoods are not usually worn for the bachelor’s degree, but undergraduate candidates at UMUC wear a gold sash. 46 Undergraduate students who have earned honors for outstanding scholarship wear cords as part of their academic regalia—gold for summa cum laude, blue for magna cum laude, and white for cum laude. These honors are awarded to students with a grade point average of 3.8 and higher. The standard cap is the mortarboard, which is usually the same color as the gown. At UMUC, master’s and bachelor’s candidates wear tassels on the right which are moved—with great fanfare—to the left at the end of the ceremony. Regalia worn by the university president is uniquely designed for each institution. Presidential robes have four bars of velvet across the sleeves, generally piped in a contrasting color, and may have two velvet bars down the front panel. At UMUC, the president’s gown is blue with gold across to represent the university’s colors. During more than 30 years at UMUC, he served successively as faculty member, director of the Baltimore division, dean, and chancellor. One of Dr. Drazek’s lifelong interests was excellence in teaching. He worked hard to recruit exceptional faculty for UMUC, and he established programs to help teachers reach their full potential in the classroom. Because Dr. Drazek viewed teaching excellence as one of the university’s core values, it is fitting that UMUC’s Teaching Excellence Awards are named in his honor. Each year, these awards are bestowed on faculty members who have been nominated by their students for their distinguished teaching. One faculty member is being recognized today as this year’s UMUC Europe recipient of the Stanley J. Drazek Teaching Excellence Award. 52 2014-2015 STANLEY J. DRAZEK TEACHING EXCELLENCE AWARD WINNER HELEN E. DRIVER ADJUNCT INSTRUCTOR To Ms. Helen E. Driver, a career in higher education is not simply a job – it is her calling. Ms. Driver has taught writing and English courses with UMUC for six years. A military spouse, she is married to an Army soldier and understands the unique challenges military personnel face. Ms. Driver relishes the time she spends in on-site or online classrooms and her passion for her craft is evident in every course she teaches. “What I enjoy most is witnessing my students rise to higher levels of competence and confidence in their writing abilities,” she said. Teaching in the military community means Ms. Driver’s students continuously motivate her with their energy and thirst for knowledge, regardless of their busy lifestyles. In turn, she focuses on helping her students learn writing skills that will help them in their future courses and careers. With 14 years of teaching experience, she has also taught various writing and literature courses at colleges throughout New York, including Saint Thomas Aquinas, Mount Saint Mary, and Cayuga Community College. Ms. Driver holds a bachelor’s degree in English literature and philosophy from Saint Mary’s College, Notre Dame, and a master’s degree in English from Austin Peay State University. 53 CELEBRATING UMUC OVERSEAS In 1949, the University of Maryland University College became the first higher learning institution to provide off-duty classes to military and civilian personnel in Europe. What started off as a noble experiment, with seven professors in six cities in Germany, has turned into a globally-recognized, award-winning institution that includes 50 sites in 14 countries in Europe, Africa, and the Middle East. UMUC continued the tradition of bold innovations in higher education by being the first university to offer courses in Iraq, offering on-site courses in Afghanistan for 8 years, and developing flexible formats, such as hybrid classes, to meet the needs of military students. More than one million servicemembers have taken UMUC courses. This long relationship has made UMUC particularly sensitive to the needs of military students and prepared to handle details specific to the military, including veterans benefits and the transfer of credit earned in military specialty schools. By proving that high standards of excellence can be maintained in nontraditional settings, UMUC has established itself as an integral part of military life. 54 Students graduating in the Class of 2015 have earned 550 associate’s degrees, 520 bachelor’s degrees, and 106 master’s degrees with UMUC. They represent U.S. military communities across the European, Central, and Africa Commands, with many having served or currently serving in war zones. Worldwide over 10,900 graduates have earned degrees this year. UMUC is honored to celebrate 66 years of providing quality education to extraordinary students overseas, including those here today who have achieved an important educational milestone in their lives. This year marks the second UMUC Europe Commencement held in Kaiserslautern, Germany. The university is proud to be a new member of the thriving Kaiserslautern Military Community (KMC) and looks forward to building both military and German partnerships here.
