Ingo’s Intro
Time Machine
T
ime defines the world, our lives;
every moment of our existence.
Imagine a world without time.
Imagine everything being snap
frozen.
The quest for more advanced technology
is invariably driven by our desire to
achieve or experience more within every
second that passes. A decade ago,
having to wait even for a short period of
time for a computer to process something
would have been considered normal.
Today, the very thought of having to wait
for a second for a file to be moved feels
like your computer has failed.
50 years ago, a plane flight from
London to Melbourne was a real journey
and would have taken us three days with
the necessity for many fuel stops on the
way. Today, you could be having dinner
in a European city one evening and
breakfast the next day almost anywhere
else in the world. Sometimes, the way
we travel these days can feel like we are
part of a science fiction movie.
We now live longer, we travel the globe
with ease and we constantly experience
information overload because we get
to see so much more. By the time this
goes to print, I would have reached the
50 year milestone. It’s a strange feeling
but also a comforting one as the past half
century has filled my brain with 50 years
of impressions and now, it seems, these
same impressions provide me a glimpse
of what we call wisdom.*
Taking the time to reflect on my life and
why it feels so structured, I can search for
the driving force behind my journey and,
while it might sound rather strange, I find
the ideal combination to produce forward
motion drive. My family is responsible for
drive mode number one and the BMW
brand represents drive mode two. I truly
believe that my drive for performance
wouldn’t exist if I had no immediate
6
evolution excite your senses
family to cater for and through BMW
this basic drive received structure. Think
about it, just like birthdays, Christmas and
Easter, there are also product launches,
deadlines for reaching targets, as well as
performance levels we need to reach to
be able to survive. Time is once again
the main driver of what we do in life. It
starts with each second, minute, hour,
day, week, month and year.
As much as we don’t like it at times,
deadlines make us perform. Having set a
deadline for the completion and opening
of our new state-of-the-art Doncaster facility,
working with deadlines also means we
are applying pressure; healthy pressure if
we stay within a realistic time frame.
Our new Motorrad showroom is a
great example as final touches were
still being carried out on the day of the
launch event. In fact, BMW bikes and
apparel stock were still being moved into
the newly created showroom space only
two hours before guests were scheduled
to arrive. I am sure had we told the
building crew the launch would be two
weeks later we would have had the same
late completion time, so again healthy
and realistic pressure will produce
more results.
Hardware stores are another good
example of how the world has changed.
Of course I enjoyed the attention of a small
old fashion hardware store, but we would
have never been given the wide choice
of products that we expect from today’s
giant hardware retailers. Again it all
depends on how we manage shopping
in such a giant store. Managed poorly
we will waste more time, managed well
we will gain some time.
From hardware to BMW products and
services (including MINI and our latest
edition, Motorrad), it would make sense
to gain time benefits from a larger BMW
outlet. A larger BMW store can offer
more resources, which results in more
stock selection, faster delivery, more parts
and accessories on hand and overall
more capacity in the service centre. Of
course the price you pay for any goods
and services should be competitive and
reasonable, but too often we tend to
forget the value of time and the value of
quality of service.
Staying in a 5 - star hotel, in a great
room, with exceptional service and
a delightful breakfast surely makes us
appreciate that better things in life cost
more. They have to cost more, as the
experience is influenced by possibly
higher quality rooms with upmarket fixtures
and fittings, better trained staff, better
quality food and so on. In saying this, our
all–new Doncaster facilities will enable us
to be more efficient and in turn, be more
competitive.
The reason why shopping centres are
so popular must be linked to the fact that
it is easy to go to one place to purchase
all your required goods and services. At
Westfield Doncaster, using valet parking
is such a convenient way of shopping,
that really $10 for the pleasure of the
service is gladly forked out…anything
to save time and reduce the associated
hassle looking out for a car space!
We will always make mistakes and we
will also waste time on both fronts, ours
and the consumers, but clearly our new
BMW superstore will make the process of
shopping for a BMW product or service
easier. It will, and should, save you
time. Yes, as the old saying goes, ‘time
is money’.
We are looking forward to you driving
(or riding) in our very new BMW time
machine proudly named Doncaster
BMW.
“*Each of us has all the time there is. Those years, weeks, hours are the sands in the
glass running swiftly away. To let them drift through our fingers is tragic waste. To use them to
the hilt, making them count for something, is the beginning of wisdom.” - Eleanor Roosevelt (1884-1962)

In 2011 BMW opened a new chapter
in its history with the launch of a new sub
brand – BMW i.
‘BMW i’ is the name given to BMW’s
new range of fully and semi-electric
vehicles which deliver sustainable
mobility without compromising on BMW’s
trademark thrills, performance and
elegance.
The BMW i3, previously known as
the Megacity Vehicle, will be the BMW
Group’s first ever car for urban areas, and
is a purely electric car.
The BMW i8 is a plug-in hybrid with
two electric motors which offers the style
and performance of a Supercar with fuel
consumption and emissions levels that
rival even the most frugal hybrids on the
road today.
This year in Australia, BMW will take
the first step towards electric mobility with
the arrival of the ActiveHybrid 5 Series.
BMW’s ActiveHybrids and BMWi
models are proof that reducing emissions
need not come at the expense of
performance and that in the future,
sustainable mobility will be anything
but dull.

Munich > On April 1st 2011, BMW M GmbH
development centre unveiled the BMW M3 Pickup,
the world’s first premium high performance ute. With
imaginations fired up, all motorists with a deep appreciation
of top performance matched by a keen practicality may find
the truly unique vehicle the perfect combination. 309 kW
under the bonnet and a practical rear load capacity take
the hallmark BMW M relationship between race-oriented
driving pleasure and everyday utility to an entirely new
level. Only problem is the M3 ute will never make it to
production as the car was simply created as ‘Aprilscherz’
(April Fool’s Joke).
Munich > The BMW Museum showcased a rather
unusual exhibit in April 2012 – a 3D puzzle of one
of the most fascinating racing cars in BMW history.
The exterior surface of the race car was designed as
an extremely challenging brainteaser. Puzzle fiends
with plenty of ingenuity were called for. The puzzle
contained no words whatsoever, consisting solely of
symbols, mysterious numbers and letters, as well as
images, pointers and abbreviations.

BMW’s Eff icientDynamics leads the way with higher performance,
lower fuel consumption and reduced emission levels.
F
or the seventh straight year, the
BMW Group has maintained its
number one position in the Dow
Jones Sustainability Indexes for
the motoring industry, effectively
making BMW the world’s ‘greenest’ car
maker. The rankings were introduced in
1999, and since then, BMW has been
the only automotive manufacturer to
appear on the list every year.
BMW introduced an Environmental
Officer specifically to guide the company
into environmentally friendly paths, and is
regarded as the first manufacturer to hire
such staff in the world. In 2009, BMW
introduced the Sustainability Board
12
evolution excite your senses
which consisted of all members of the
company’s Board of Management.
Key
to
BMW’s
sustainability
achievements
are
the
visionary
EfficientDynamics set of technologies,
which reduce fuel consumption and
emission
levels
while
enhancing
performance and driving dynamics.
Some of the EfficientDynamics features
include Brake Energy Regeneration, Auto
Start-Stop and Electric Power Steering,
all of which are employed to cut fuel
bills and emissions. An even relatively
simple idea such as an Optimum Gear
Shift Change Indicator is designed to
encourage economical motoring.
Through a wide range of models,
BMW’s innovative technology also goes
further high-tech with the inclusion of
BMW TwinPower Turbos, eight-speed
automatic transmissions as well as the
use of intelligent lightweight materials.
The benefits to today’s BMW customers
are enormous because they receive a
state-of-the-art vehicle with technology not
available only a few years ago.
It’s reassuring to know that sustainability
remains an integral part of the BMW
Group’s corporate strategy and that our
driving future is in safe hands.

Increase your riding pleasure by decreasing your carbon footprint.
S
ustainability, carbon footprints
and economy are all words
we are hearing more often.
So how will it effect us? How
does it effect me? I’m a fuel
guzzling performance junkie born of the
industrial age but I do have a conscience,
so what do I do? Whatever you do, it
should be meaningful with a genuine
benefit, far more than simply lighting a
candle for an hour once a year.
A detailed study by Belgian
consultancy, Transport & Mobility Leuven,
has found that a slight shift in traffic
composition from cars to motorcycles
significantly reduces traffic congestion
and emissions.
The study, which was presented
at the Association des Constructeurs
Européens de Motocycles (ACEM)
2012 Conference in Brussels, found that
if 10 per cent of all private cars were
replaced by motorcycles in the traffic
14

flow of the test area, total time losses for
all vehicles decreased by 40 per cent
and total emissions reduced by 6 per
cent. A 25 per cent modal shift from cars
to motorcycles was found to eliminate
congestion entirely.
The results above would seem perfectly
normal if you have experienced the
organised chaos of traffic in many Asian
countries where the fact that the majority
of traffic is two wheeled, helps the city
to function.
The BMW G 650 GS has a tank
capacity of 14 litres, so when I arrived
at the counter to pay after filling up for
a ride to Phillip Island World Superbike
weekend, I received change from a
twenty! Last time that happened I was
refuelling the lawnmower. It is learner
approved; you could spend a day at an

after. Having ridden for a while, grab a fist

The Best Things
Come in 3’s
Read about the BMW 3 Series, its history and why it’s the most
important new model of the year.
I
t was a cold damp morning on
the Blackdown hills, south-western
England, and I was running late. I
hasten to point out that my rate of
progress on the winding country road
was well inside the maximum speed limit
but, even so, as I rounded the next bend
everything started to go horribly wrong.
No amount of opposite lock could have
prevented the impending spin and
several long seconds later I was facing
the wrong way in a cloud of steam with
most of the front end missing. When the
police arrived to help clear up the mess
and close the road they reassured me
the culprit was very much a diesel spill
(probably from a ropey old tractor) and
16
evolution excite your senses
no suspicion or accusation fell on my
driving. So it was not the best day of my
motoring life but if I were to point out the
silver lining to the cloud it would be this: I
had just crashed into a tree at around 60
kilometres per hour and yet I was able
to open the door and get out by myself.
All the windows were still intact and the
only injury I suffered was a minor cut
to my hand. The car that preserved me
was built in 1979 and certainly didn’t
have any of the clever safety features of
modern cars, so how on earth did I walk
away? Simple. It was a BMW 3 Series.
To be precise an E21 - the first 3 Series.
So it is perhaps unsurprising that I have
a personal connection with the 3 Series
but when the E21 was launched back
in 1975, BMW couldn’t have imagined
that so many drivers would love it like
I do. Furthermore, it would become the
world’s most successful premium model
series. So what is its formula and why
does it continue to be just as strong
today?
In its first incarnation, the E21 offered
something that was rare on the new car
market and certainly not normally at
an affordable price. It was a perfectly
placed sports sedan with good looks,
bags of German quality and purposeful
styling with the performance to match.
The flagship was the 323i and it offered
a refined fuel injected six cylinder
engine, rear wheel drive and four seats.
So good was the recipe that the little
E21 achieved significant success on
the racing circuit further adding to the
pedigree of this relatively new series.
After the resounding success of the
E21 and the sale of over a million units,
one of the greatest challenges facing
the BMW engineers and designers was
how to evolve the 3 Series and maintain
its popularity. When the replacement
model came along in 1982, it quickly
became clear that the new E30 was
every bit as desirable as its predecessor
and sales skyrocketed. The E30
managed to keep the essential elements
that made the first 3 Series unique, while
introducing new technology and styling.
The next generation 3 Series pioneered
new manufacturing techniques such as
laser panel alignment and innovative
features such as a service indicator and
fuel economy gauge. It was available
in various body configurations including
2-door, 4-door, touring and convertible.
The E30 has many notable
achievements to its name but just one
which surpasses all others. In 1985
BMW gave the world a car which was
to change the way people thought about
sports sedans and it did it with just two
characters: M3. The E30 M3 invented a
new class all of its own and one which
stands to this day.
The E30 proved it was the platform
for either enjoyable and practical day to
day motoring or the wheeled equivalent
of a slapped brumby. The result? 2.3
million sold in its lifespan of eight years.
When the third generation of the
BMW 3 Series was announced,
the public understandably expected
something exceptional. While the E36
represented a good progression from the
E30 and strong sales in 1990, it wasn’t
until two years later that the real show
stopper came along - a true coupé. With
its unbroken roofline and frameless doors
the E36 Coupé set a new standard of
elegance which defines the 3 Series
even now.
Next in line, the E46 3 Series brought
with it even more technology in 1998:
Twin Vanos, Valvetronic and alloy
suspension components to increase
power without decreasing efficiency.
The E46 also heralded the absolutely
barmy M3 GTR. This was the first time
BMW had built a production V8 3
Series and once again it was a 3 Series
BMW crossing finish lines first all over
the world.
The most recent 3 Series (the
E90/91/92/93) is so full of advanced
technology it boggles the mind. Multiple
turbochargers, direct injection, physics
defying fuel consumption, and the multi
award winning N44 twin turbo engine.
Not to mention that same satisfying
BMW 3 Series look and feel.
The sixth generation F30 3 Series
has only just arrived but can it continue
the legacy that its predecessors have
laid down over the last 36 years? Early
indications are good.
Well it certainly looks right. The 3
Series has always been practical with
nothing wasted, so the proportions are

kept as a 3 Series should be with the
passenger space not lost in a mass of
bonnet and boot. The lines are kept
clean and simple and the trademark
features remain.
A key point for the BMW 3 Series has
always been its performance so all eyes
will be on the engines in the F30. For
the first time in its history the new ‘3’ will
only be available with turbochargers.
This applies to both the diesel and petrol
versions. How the times have changed
from when turbos were perceived as the
enfant terrible of the motoring world.
Today turbocharged power-plants are
unsurpassed for efficiency and the
power across the range is impressive.
The class-leading automatic transmission
even comes with eight gears!
Fuel efficiency has yet again been
improved and figures of 7.9 litres per
100km does not exactly give the 335i
a drinking problem especially when you
consider the 335kW and 400Nm of
torque available.
The virtually teetotal 320d, courtesy
of BMW EfficientDynamics, offers
combined driving fuel consumption of
just 4.1L/100Km. If the 3 Series carries
on this sort of progress I fully believe the
successor to the F30 will be able to run
on dust.
People who like taking things apart
will be pleased to see the F30 comes
with some good toys to keep them or
their meddling passengers distracted
with Head-Up Display, Lane Departure
Warning, selectable driving modes,

large dash integrated monitor with iDrive
and Rear View Camera to name a few.
I could clog the entire page explaining
what all these wonderful things are but
instead I advise you to book a test drive
and find out for yourself.
Although, unsurprisingly, the all new
BMW 3 Series has grown slightly to fit
in all its new treats and enhanced safety
features, it has still managed to lose
40kg over its predecessor which puts
it firmly in with a chance of winning a
reality TV show.
With each generation that passes, the
3 Series goes from strength to strength
borrowing the lessons it has learnt from
its distant past and adding bright ideas
of the future. It should be an act that is
impossible to follow even by another
BMW 3 Series but every time the next
generation is born, BMW shows the
motoring world that the venerable ‘3’ is
still the one.
When I had finished mourning the
passing of my poor tree-hugging 316,
I replaced it with another 3 Series and
13 years after I bought my beloved
E21, I still own a 3 Series (my fifth). For
me they continue to represent the very
best balance of fun, practicality, styling,
economy and, most memorably, safety.
My current 3 is getting a bit long in
the tooth though. Maybe I’ll pop in to
Doncaster BMW and have a sit in an
F30 - maybe a diesel. Or is that tempting
demons of the past?

Grand Designs
Spoil yourself, and your friends, in the beautiful all new BMW 6 Series Gran Coupé.
I
f you’re anything like me you probably
don’t need much encouragement
to pop the cork on a bottle of
something sparkling. Someone got
engaged? Seaside barbecue? Sun
just set again? They are all good reasons
in my mind. But good sparkling wine is
something that needs to be shared and
with only 750ml to go around it’s never
long before the bottle runs dry. Of course
there is always the option of getting stuck
in to another but there is a better way:
the magnum.
Yes a magnum holds exactly the
same amount as two standard bottles
but pouring drinks from a double - sized
bottle not only caters for more very happy
friends, it also has a special sense of
occasion that the standard size can’t
achieve.
The BMW 6 Series has always been a
Champagne occasion kind of car. Since
the first E24, it has delivered delightful
exclusivity and feels like a true coupé
should, but what if you are the kind of
person who gets driven more than you
drive and you still want the elegance of a
coupé? And what if you carry passengers
on a regular basis but you want them to
experience front seat luxury even when
in the back?
20
evolution excite your senses
Add 113mm and two extra doors to a
6 Series and you are left with the BMW
6 Series Gran Coupé. The result: it is
beautiful. The new Gran Coupé doesn’t
just offer extras for the rear passengers.
With the increased interior space comes
a plethora of extra luxuries for all to
enjoy. Far too many to list here in fact
but 4-zone climate control, Bang and
Olufsen surround sound system and
xDrive on the 650i Gran Coupé are
amongst my favourites.
The subtle aesthetic and scale changes
of the BMW 6 Series Gran Coupé aren’t
just practicalities as they also bring an
added prestige and individuality to the
6 Series range. It works very nicely
indeed.
With a variety of sparkling paint
options and effervescent performance
from the BMW TwinPower Turbo engines,
the BMW 6 Series Gran Coupé has all
the quality and elegance of the 6 Series
Convertible or Coupé but with a little
extra capacity for your friends.
I love the name Gran Coupé but
between you and me, I’ll be calling it the
6 Series Magnum. I wonder if I can get
one in Bottle Green?

Eminence
Warhol had laid a single brush stroke on
it the M1 was a masterpiece. Despite all
of its brilliance, the M1 was not a great
commercial success nor will it go down
in history as one of the great racing cars,
but none of this matters because what the
M1 did best was launch a brand and the
brand was just one letter - M. So what
happened next?
The thrill of the strongest letter in the world.
F
or hundreds of years the letter
‘A’ sat alongside all the other 25
letters in the alphabet minding
its own business. On its own it
bore no more significance than
any other single character. And then one
day in June 1954 a team of Russian
scientists started a revolutionary power
station in Obninsk that used nothing
more than atoms to generate electricity.
From that day on the letter A had a new
significance. It was synonymous to energy
and it changed the world.
Until 2001 the letter ‘I’ shared rather
much the same status as the pre 50s A.
But then a gentleman named Steve Jobs
introduced the world to a portable music
player and the lowercase ‘i’ has never
really been the same since.
In the right context a single letter can
carry huge significance and evoke
great emotions and only one motor
manufacturer has ever been able to do it.
In 1978 BMW launched a car that
was so radical in its design, and so
far ahead of anything it had produced
M6
The same engine from the M1 found its
way in to the E24 6 series and turned it
in to a savage tarmac munching GT. With
staggering performance and handling that
defied its size, the M6 would return in
2005 as the E63/64, this time with the
500bhp V10 shared by the M5.
E82 1 Series M Coupé
before, that it was decided it needed
a name of equivalent importance. The
car was the first machine completed in
BMW’s motorsport factory and so it
was named simply M1. The M factory
is a separate entity to the rest of BMW
production and although the facility had
contributed to a few previous models
such as the three litre CSL, the M1 was
the first complete project to roll out. The
exact definition of what constitutes a true
M car is open to debate. Some say a car
has to be constructed entirely in the M
factory to be granted the ultimate status
but I have a slightly different theory. If you
lift the bonnet on a BMW and the engine
doesn’t say M POWER, I’m sorry; it’s not
an M car.
The M1 was a true supercar with its
mid mounted M Power 277bhp engine
and awe - striking looks, it redefined
what BMW was capable of. Before any
M5
Shortly after the E24 M6, BMW turned
their dependable and practical E28
in to one of the most iconic cars of all
time. The first M5 shared the M6 S38
engine but over the years it slowly grew
to 3.8 litres in the E34 M5 ensuring its
autobahn dominance even when offered
as a practical touring version. The E39
M5 made a milestone by breaking the
400 horsepower mark with its V8 and
then again the E60 topped 500bhp
with its F1 inspired V10 engine. The M5
has always stood for uncompromising
comfort combined with earth shattering
performance. The latest F10 M5
continues the tradition with new levels of
luxury packaged in a subtly styled body
complete with 560bhp.
M3
When the first M3 came along in
1986 it appeared to be a somewhat
aggressively styled E30 with a bit more
power. Closer inspection however would
reveal the M3 recipe. A true motorsport
developed engine coupled with a
lightweight taugh body provided a hair
raising experience on the road and still to
this day embarrasses owners of far newer
and more powerful cars on the track.
While the M3 has become a little more
luxurious over the years it still adheres to
the formula of 3 Series practicality with
class leading performance. Special
versions occasionally hark back to the
pure E30 character such as the E36 M3 R,
the lunatic E46 M3 GTR (the first V8 3
Series) and M3 CSL with its carbon fibre

Not officially an M car but only by name.
Its epic 5.6 V12 said the right thing on
the rocker cover and performance was as
awesome as its looked. A very rare car at
the time of its launch in 1992 and just as
desirable to this day.
M Coupé and M Roadster
The first M Coupé divided the motoring
world with its controversial looks. Rather
like a shooting-brake version of the Z3,
it was certainly unusual. Without fail,
everyone who drove it forgot about the
styling, with its 3.2 M Power engine
from the E36 M3 Evo it was extremely
good to drive. So good was the result
that the same engine went into the softtop Z3 and the M Roadster was born.
When the E85 and E86 borrowed the
E46 M3 engine, the second generation
M Roadster and M Coupé was created
with similarly fantastic results.
1 Series M Coupé
Clearly the 135i with its three litre twinturbo six cylinder wasn’t quite mad
enough so the M engineers came up with
the flared-arched fire-breathing 1 Series
M Coupé. The result was a 340bhp
masterpiece with dramatic styling and
described by some of the world’s leading
journalists as perfect.

X5 M/X6 M
The basic principles of physics should
mean that it is impossible to make a
4WD a pleasure on the road. For years
the X5 and X6 have been proving this
theory wrong, but after the M factory got
hold of the flagship off-roaders, BMW
showed that a 4WD could out-perform
many performance cars as well as being
able to pull a horse float out of a muddy
field.
At the Tender Trap we create top quality, unpretentious, beautifully
presented food with supreme attention to detail, in an atmosphere
of ambience and comfortable hospitality.
In creating the iconic M badge and the
machines that wear it, BMW haven’t
just created some of the world’s most
important cars. They have created an
institution. I can’t wait to see what comes
along next.
FUNCTIONS Celebrations… weddings, christenings,
communions, birthdays.
RESTAURANT Afternoons or evenings spent at the
Tender Trap are a delicious combination of elegant
indulgence, good company and a real sense of occasion.
If you’re looking for a venue that is a little bit different and
offers excellent cuisine and fine wines along with a day
planned especially for you then The Tender Trap is the
place to choose.
Owner Chris Moraitis believes passionately that people
should be fussy and that when they come to the Tender
Trap, everything from the welcome through to the after
dinner coffee should be genuine and as good as it can be.
There are many fine dining restaurants in Melbourne but
few of this calibre.

Destination Doncaster
“Your imagination is your preview of life’s coming attractions.” – Albert Einstein
A
lbert Einstein had it right - it’s
imagination that sets apart
the good from great. It’s
those who dare to dream
and then turn that dream into
reality that make a difference.
For the past three years, anyone who’s
visited Doncaster BMW has seen the
building works, they’ve heard or read
snippets about what’s being created, but
probably not yet grasped the reality. That
will all change when the new dealership
officially opens in July.
During the many months of building, it
hasn’t just been construction workers that
have taken careful notice of the progress
at the building site in Doncaster. There’s
also been a steady procession of visitors
in hardhats from BMW’s head office in
Germany and the region, having a look
at a dealership of the future being created
on the other side of the world.
The numbers tell only part of the story in
this extraordinary redevelopment. In total
it’s a $15 million plus investment, including
28
evolution excite your senses
a new vehicle showroom spread over two
floors that will display 60 cars in style, the
most technically advanced 28-bay service
centre in Australia and the capacity to
park over 200 customer vehicles.
For the first time in Australian car
dealership history, Doncaster BMW is
creating a truly ‘destinational experience’
with its complete make-over. That’s why
it’ll be offering al fresco dining with a
full-featured outdoor kitchen including
a wood-fired pizza oven, a café
overflowing with handmade chocolates,
and a viewing platform for customers to
enjoy their espresso coffee with a stunning
360 degree view of Melbourne. Other
unique elements include a 150 person
function space with a 5-star hotel quality
kitchen that doubles as a staff lunch room,
a BMW Lifestyle store stocked with all the
latest BMW gifts and accessories, as well
as a vehicle and pedestrian lift to make
the transition to the second level easier.
The new Doncaster BMW will be a
place people will seek out to enjoy the
experience, like shoppers who flocked
to Westfield Doncaster after its $650
million redevelopment a few years ago.
Destinational shopping is the buzz
word that many retailers are using to
fight off the continual encroachment of
online shopping, but in the Australian
car industry, no-one has yet got that
right. Doncaster BMW has put its money
where its mouth is to create something
different, a premium customer experience
where the vehicles will be the artistic
backdrop for those who prefer to immerse
themselves in all things BMW or MINI.
As with any major redevelopment it’s
the little things that will turn heads, like
the extensive use of timber on floors,
stairs and sales desks that will warm
the entire environment or the latest
technology vertical solar panels that are
a prominent feature of the new building’s
façade that will help power the building
and ensure Doncaster BMW will stand
out as one of the most environmentally
friendly buildings in Melbourne.
The solar panels aren’t the only green
feature in the building that includes extra
thick insulated glazing to windows to cut
down on heating and cooling costs as
well as greenhouse emissions. Also, huge
new water tanks have been installed to
significantly reduce water consumption.
It all adds up to a dealership that should
really be opened by an environmental
activist like David Suzuki.
Doncaster BMW, of course, is thinking
ahead to the time when it begins to sell
the revolutionary new BMW ‘i’ Series
vehicles; low emission state-of-the-art
models that will require onsite electric
battery recharging. There will be no
better way to offer such a service to its
customers than to say that a large part
of the electricity on offer is sourced from
renewable solar power.
The new dealership will have an
executive wing, with three boardrooms
and private lounges where customers
can talk in comfort to the dealership’s
personnel. It will be like visiting an
exclusive airline lounge within easy
reach of customers.
The feedback has already been very
positive from Doncaster BMW’s new
Motorrad showroom, again a state-ofthe-art design and fit-out with a very large
selection of New and Pre-owned BMW
motorbikes.
It’s these and other special touches
that people will remember at the new
Doncaster BMW showroom, like the
original artwork surrounding the walls,
the internet kiosks or the stylish individual
vials of honey that can be sampled by
customers, honey that will come from the
dealership’s very own rooftop apiaries.
Doncaster BMW’s unique wine cellar
is certain to be very popular as customers
and staff alike celebrate a new beginning
from mid-year, a destination to visit in its
own right.

two-wheeled modes of transport. The
R25, released in 1950, offered a new

sidecar mounts, acclaimed plunger

rear suspension and a much improved
engine.
Following on from the initial success
of the R25, improvements to the series
were inevitable. The R25/2 of 1951
evolved into the R25/3 of 1953, with
the M224/4 engine developing 13hp
at 5,600rpm (up from 12hp) thanks to a
higher compression ratio of 7:1, improved
intake and exhaust system and either a
Bing or SAWE carburettor. Other notable
features of the R25/3 were a larger fuel
tank, 18-inch alloy wheels, full hub with
brakes and hydraulically damping forks.

located in East Germany, is littered with
UNESCO World Heritage sites and
in 1999 was selected as the European
Capital of Culture by the European Council
of Ministers. It is famous for its wealth of
cultural heritage and has produced many
of history’s great minds such as Goethe
and Schiller, Herder and Wieland to
name a few. This timeless town certainly
is the pearl of Germany.
Weimar’s vast history sees it recognised
as the place where Germany’s first
democratic constitution was signed after
World War 1, giving its name to the
Weimar Republic period in German
Politics between 1919 and 1933.
But most famously Weimar is known
for its leading characters of the literary
genre of Weimar Classicism, the writers
Goethe and Schiller. Goethe (17821832) is considered the supreme genius
of modern German Literature with work
spanning from poetry, drama, philosophy
and science. His home has now been
transformed into a museum which displays
different exhibitions based on themes that
are relevant to Goethe’s day including
objects from his collections. The city is also
the birthplace of the Bauhaus movement.
Weimar is rich in arts education with
The Bauhaus University and the Liszt
School of Music which attract many
40
evolution excite your senses
students, specialising in art, media and
design, architecture, civil engineering and
music. Also the Duchess Anna Amalia
Library contains a collection of 13,000
books including Goethe’s masterpiece
‘Faust’, in addition to a music collection
of the Duchess. The library, which dates
back to 1691, belongs to UNESCO
world heritage and is one of the oldest
libraries in Europe.
Not far away from the Bauhaus
University is the 48-hectare landscaped
park ‘Park an der Ilm’. On the edge
of Weimar’s old town, the park has a
kilometre-long stretch of green bordering
the river ‘Ilm’. A notable characteristic of
the park is the ease to walk to numerous
historic places such as Goethe’s Garden
House, the Roman House and the Bark
House within the park; connecting the
building structures with the surrounding
countryside is beautiful to see.
Generally, people come to Weimar to
broaden their cultural horizons. But other
aspects that might make a visit even more
interesting include the large number of
bars (more per capita than Berlin), the
hearty cuisine and great beers such as the
Schwanenblond, which has been brewed
since 1533.
Holiday destinations depend on
personal taste, where one finds beauty, the
joy of discovery or intellectual challenge.
And I believe Weimar has all of the above.

Charming
Heidelberg
Heidelberg has around three million day trippers every year. It isn’t hard
to see why this German town boasts such impressive visitor statistics.
A
popular song says: “Ich hab
mein Herz in Heidelberg
verloren!” Translated that
means: “I have lost my
heart in Heidelberg!” This
certainly rings true for many.
Located in south-west Germany, one
hour from Frankfurt, it is home to The
University of Heidelberg which was
founded in 1386 and is one of Europe’s
oldest institutions.
This university
42
evolution excite your senses
continues to be a leading centre for
scientific and medical research and
the number of students here makes
Heidelberg one of the ‘youngest’ cities
in Germany.
Then there is the majestic Heidelberg
Castle ruin looking down on the city,
its ivy covered walls reminiscent of a
glorious past. With more than one million
tourists yearly, the castle has a history
almost as old as the city itself. The first
parts of the castle were constructed in
1300 but it wasn’t until Prince Elector
Ruprecht III (1398 – 1410) that the
castle was used as a regal rew, balls,
theatre performances, and couples
now even have the opportunity to get
married there. The castle is surrounded
by gardens constructed between 1616
and 1619 and it is also home of the
Heidelberg ‘Tun’ – the ‘World’s largest
wine barrel’ built in 1751. It stands
seven metres high, is eight and a half
metres wide, holds 220,000 litres of
wine, and has a dance floor built on top
of it. Part of the scene is the Old Bridge
across the Neckar River, for many
centuries the only easy access to the city
from the north.
Lastly, for those who fancy the more
modern aspects of Germany, you must
hire a vehicle and take a spin on the
Motorway A5 (German Autobahn). The
Hockenheimring (motorsport race track)
is also just 10km away from the city
centre of Heidelberg hosts the Formula 1
German Grand Prix every second year.
There is a fantastic selection of coffee
shops and bars on offer in Heidelberg,
perfect for a lazy Sunday latté or a local
German beer. With so much on offer,
all-in-all you can say that this area, the
‘Rhein-Neckar Metropole’, has a very
good mix between modern and classic
style and has something to appeal to
all ages.

Chillon in
Switzerland
Along the Swiss shores of Lake Geneva lies the f lower-adorned bank of
Montreux. Join Doncaster BMW’s Josie Camilleri as she takes in the region
and discovers it will leave you feeling anything but neutral.
C
onsider for a moment
what comes to mind when
you think of Switzerland.
For the foodies, it’s
probably chocolate and
cheese. For others, skiing the Swiss Alps.
Perhaps it’s their fine time pieces. Or
maybe even their banks.
But romance? Surely their French
neighbour has that corner covered?
So when the Swiss tourist office
proclaims to have the most romantic
castle in the world, it is worth a look.
Faced with the enviable dilemma of
where to spend a few spare days on our
way from Italy to France, the area known
44
evolution excite your senses
as the ‘Swiss Riviera’ made its way onto
our itinerary.
Arriving by train we found our
accommodation, the Grand Hotel
Suisse-Majestic, conveniently located just
across from the station. Ready to put our
feet up and recharge, we head down
to the restaurant deck and are instantly
revitalised. With pristine views across the
lake and some funky music, where better
to enjoy dinner before washing it down
with a little local Mövenpick ice cream?
Life is good.
The next day we were ready to head
out and see the sights and to start the day
we choose a leisurely stroll along the lake
promenade. Should you feel inclined,
the walk from the centre of town is an
easy one and extends for some seven
kilometres all the way to our destination
- the Chillon Castle.
Close your eyes and conjure up the
romantic castle of your childhood. Open
them again and the first sight of the Castle
does not disappoint. Drawbridges, patrol
towers, the medieval detail – they are
all here.
Given a map on arrival, you are free to
wander around at your own leisure. Built
in the 13th century by the House of Savoy
to control passage along Lake Geneva,
Chillon Castle was also used as an
arsenal, prison and temporary residence
of the Dukes of Savoy. The latter brings
the most colourful items to the tour with
bathtub and latrines (the ones that end at
the lake) which are all must see items.
The entire complex consists of 25
buildings and three courtyards. More
than 300,000 guests visit Chillon each
year, 75 per cent of which are foreign
tourists. Moved by the experience? You
can hire the premises if you are looking
for a wedding venue with a difference.
Montreux may be largely unknown
to many in Australia but it is not such a
secret across the globe. Many famous
names have frequented its shores with
Ernest Hemingway, Charles Dickens and
Charlie Chaplin amongst the guest list.
Perhaps the most celebrated of these
guests is Queen lead singer, Freddie
Mercury.
Arriving in town for the Montreux Jazz
Festival in 1978, Mercury recorded the
album ‘Jazz’ here and is said to have
fallen in love… with the serenity. Taking
up residence in a flat boasting views of
the lake, he bought the former Mountain
Studios where he recorded his last album
with Queen ‘Made in Heaven’.
Any question that his affection for the
city was one-sided is dispelled at the sight
of the bronze statue that has adorned the
promenade since 1996. Even today it is
kept permanently in flower by his fans.
If you are planning your own Montreux
excursion, be warned. Switzerland is not
a cheap option. Be sure to collect your
free Montreux Riviera Card from your
hotel before heading out as it will give
you free bus travel and a 50% saving on
entry to Chillon amongst other goodies.
Nestled between Lake Geneva and the
Alps, there is no doubt Montreux certainly
does have a romantic feel to it. Just ask
Freddie - you never know where you will
find love.

Take Flight
Choosing a destination is easy. Deciding on the airline which
takes you there can also be just as stress-free.
I
do enjoy a challenge and booking
international flights in 2012 is
definitely a contest. My task in
January was to get from Melbourne to
Faro, Portugal, for the BMW World
Dealer 3 Series Sedan Launch. I needed
to find the ideal combination to get to
Faro in the fastest and most comfortable
way, a la The Amazing Race.
An imperative part I always take into
consideration when selecting a long
haul flight is how fast the connection
is between one main transfer hub such
as Singapore, Hong Kong or Dubai to
another. To me a reduction in travel time
46
evolution excite your senses
is as important, if not more important,
than the actual choice of airline.
The other contemplation is airline
rewards programs. They are a successful
tool for airlines obtaining loyalty from
their clients, hence labels like ‘The
frequent flyer’ that are crowned from a
Gold member all the way to a Sapphire,
Diamond or Platinum.
So with all these thoughts in mind, I
decided to avoid Qantas due to the lack
of extended connectivity out of Frankfurt
into Europe and due to the scheduled
aircraft being the 747. Not that there is
anything wrong with the 747, but when
you experience the amazing space,
comfort and quietness of the A380 from
Melbourne to Singapore, boarding the
once king of the air, is a real downer
when a 13 hour trip is ahead of you.
With Qantas eliminated, the next
step for me was to decide to explore
Lufthansa. Lufthansa (LH) has an extensive
European network and I was also told
they fly the new A380 from Singapore to
Frankfurt daily. My findings excited me,
as Lufthansa offers to code share with a
host of airlines within the Star Alliance
network but strangely enough also with
Qantas.
My journey took me from Melbourne
to Singapore with Qantas, flying the
A380. In Singapore I moved across to
Lufthansa with a two hour connection
time, once again flying the A380. In
Frankfurt I managed to get a LH flight to
Brussels again with a comfortable two
hours in their domestic lounge, which
seriously is hopping all day!
Then from Brussels I boarded the
Brussels Airways flight (also a Lufthansa
Group airline) and made my way down
to Faro. I was pleasantly surprised how
well the Brussels Airways staff looked
after me, great in-flight service, brand
new aircraft and the on-time arrival
made this flight an absolute pleasure,
yes regardless of the jetlag well and
truly taking its toll.
Flying in the new A380 with Lufthansa
was in fact much better than I expected.
I prefer the ease of the entertainment
system LH uses and I enjoyed the open
cabin style opposed to the lower less
encapsulated approach. The business
section is massive as LH does not operate
premium economy; the entire upper floor
(with the exception of the very front firstclass) is dedicated for business class.
I love the way Lufthansa manage to
board their passengers in Frankfurt.
The business lounge forms part of the
gate, you are pre-checked in when you
arrive and once boarding commences
you simply make your way through an
automated single access gate operated
via your boarding pass bar code.
The battle for airlines to retain clients
will reach new heights, so to speak,
as capacity increases. The Middle
East carriers such as Emirates, Etihad
and Qatar are all offering outstanding
connections into Europe with many direct
flights to most European cities from their
home port. The newly charged carbon
tax for any airline flying into European
cities provides airlines with shorter
flying times into Europe a sizable cost
advantage as the carbon surcharge is
based on the distance travelled from the
port of origin to the relevant arrival city,
making transfer hubs such as Singapore
and Hong Kong far more costly to
airline operators. It’s strange way of
calculating carbon emission seeing that
regardless of where an airline stops
over, the burning of fuel and related
emissions should be the same.
Maybe Qantas and Lufthansa will
create an additional stop in the Middle
East or even skip the traditional Asian
hubs altogether on the quest of cutting
costs and becoming more competitive.
To me, reducing flights and doing away
with many destinations can’t be the
answer for growth…but maybe I have
got it all wrong.
I love booking clever flights with
great connections and the latest in
aircraft offerings. For this trip, Lufthansa
accommodated my needs well. Who
knows which airline will suit my next
requirements to help bring the world
a little closer. With the many options
available, make your next flight abroad
the best it can be.

Le Castellet> MINI United time is here again. The

running of a very special open-air festival from 11 – 13 May
2012. The two day festival sees a line up with the likes of Iggy

Austria> MINI is backing this year’s
Kitesurf Tour Europe as a title partner, and as
such is the world’s first carmaker to sponsor
kitesurfing at a European level. Sifting out

Some 25,000 fans from more than 40 nations flocked to
Silverstone in England for the MINI United festival in 2009 to
celebrate not only the third community catch-up but also the
50th anniversary of the brand’s founding. Indeed, the event
programme is richer in depth and variety than ever before. As
well as live appearances by leading lights of the international
music and DJ scene, it goes without saying that the MINI
product family will also be taking to the stage in all their glory.
MINI supports the Life Ball in Vienna for the 12th time
Vienna> Since its market launch in 2001, MINI has been a partner of the Life Ball. During this period, eleven unique vehicles
have been specially designed for the event by a wide range of internationally renowned celebrities. For the 20th anniversary
of the Life Ball, MINI continues its tradition of donating a vehicle that has been creatively adapted by an international celebrity,
the proceeds of which go to projects combating HIV and AIDS. The auctioning of these one-off MINI models over the last years
has generated proceeds of more than 500,000 euros for the charitable cause. This year the ranks of Life Ball MINI designers are

The most sporting of all MINI Countryman models boasts
variable ALL4 all-wheel drive to guarantee unbridled
driving fun, regardless of the weather or road conditions.
This car breathes fresh life into the rally sport genes of the
classic MINI, giving it seriously addictive power. The MINI
JOHN COOPER WORKS Countryman climbs and descends
mountain passes like nothing else on the road, and the
temptation to feed a scenic tour over a twisty country
road into a morning commute or weekend drive is all too
compelling.
Its 1.6-litre four-cylinder engine with twin-scroll
turbocharger has plenty of bite, developing 160 kW and
peak torque of x280 Nm, which it sustains from 2,000 to
5,600 rpm. The driver has to wait just 7.0 seconds to see
the marker on the Centre Speedo dart past 100 km/h and
on to a top speed of 225 km/h.
The new MINI JOHN COOPER WORKS Countryman
may be a dynamic performer, but it is also impressively
economical: fuel consumption of 7.2 litres per 100
kilometres corresponds to CO2 emissions of 167 grams per
kilometre. Its handling and performance are matched by
appropriately dynamic looks, inside and out.
Despite all this sporting zest, the MINI JOHN COOPER
WORKS Countryman still manages to be a practical
everyday car.

flesh and get behind the wheel. It has a very familiar approach but has a
character all of its own. This model is the first open top two-seater in the
brand’s detailed history.
The MINI Roadster sits substantially lower than its MINI Cabrio counterpart
and to make it clear, this is not a vehicle to lean back and enjoy a leisurely ride.
It sweeps effortlessly into corners, accelerates perfectly out of them and, if you
are driving the MINI Cooper S Roadster, will go from 0-100km/h in 7 seconds.
It has a secret weapon that it also shares with the Coupé, in the rear deck it
conceals a powered spoiler that takes flight at 80km/h – stabilising the rear
suspension as speeds increase – then drops back down at cruising speeds.
With the choice of environmentally friendly vehicles bearing down on
consumers you can rest assured that the MINI Cooper Roadster emits 133g/km
and consumes only 5.7L/100km. If Diesel takes your fancy, the MINI Cooper
SD Roadster emits only 118g/km and consumes a small 4.5L/100km of fuel.
Deceptively, the cargo area is capable of carrying whatever proper
and provision needed for anticipated or unexpected adventures ahead.
Snowboarding? Playing a round of golf? Not a problem for the two-seater as
you can throw them in-between the boot and front seat.
Adventure comes in all shapes and sizes and can be referred to by many
different names. The MINI Roadster lets you take your top off, let the sun shine
on your face and bury the throttle into your next adventure.

BMW 1 Series Launch
To celebrate the release of the highly anticipated all

October 2011 transforming Westfield Doncaster into an
exclusive never-seen-before event. With over 200 guests
the night was a first-class affair, delivering a ‘One of a
Kind’ experience with Australia’s Number 1 Female DJ,
Havana Brown.
MINI Coupé and Roadster
Wherever, whenever it’s another day, another adventure
in the all new MINI Coupé and Roadster. To celebrate
the launch of these two thrill seekers, we had an open
day launch event here at Doncaster MINI Garage. In true
MINI style, we entertained with a local DJ and treated
customers to delicious canapés and drinks.
BMW 3 Series Launch
BMW Motorrad
In February, we opened Australia’s newest BMW Motorcycle dealership, Doncaster BMW
Motorrad - providing all aspects of support from Sales, Service, Parts & Accessories to
