This month’s feature story about a local amateur football squad and
its decision to take the infamous name of Adolf Hitler as its team
mascot is a subject of controversy close to my heart. Publishing
the article in its “take no sides” approach was a tough decision, but
we know it’s more important to tell these stories and let the reader
decide. I know how I feel about it.
All four of my grandparents suffered at the hands of the Nazis in
Europe during WWII, two of them still living with serial numbers
tattooed on their forearm. My grandfather has a remarkable account
of his own terrible experience in a concentration camp and his escape
later on. They lost most of their families in the gas chambers as six
million Jews were killed by the Nazis. Generations will live with those
memories and stories inside of us.
In this story, team captain No No seems like a regular guy, certainly
not a Neo-Nazi. There were no signs of other strong misconceptions.
For them, and I’m sure for millions of other Chinese, Hitler is a
symbol for a strong, ambitious leader that challenged the far West.
The disconnect comes where there’s no reception for the common
understanding of caring for someone else’s tragedy. I did not conduct
the interview myself, so I would like to think that perhaps if I was
telling them my family story face to face, they would take pause to
relate and recognize the sensitivities of their actions. Or maybe it’s
just an issue of different perspectives and a lack of proper etiquette.
***
So you see, it’s an important story that shows another unintentional
incident of culture shock that is mind boggling, surprising and,
conceivably, a little upsetting. In my opinion, a cultural, commonsense misunderstanding, as team Hitler displays, is more acceptable
than any real ideological belief in a philosophy of malevolence. These
differences can be overcome through open conversation, and time.

Dear Editor,
Dear Editor,
I was convinced that the advertisement for
WhyBaijiu.com was fake, but it turns out the
website is real. It even has a photo of a panda
enjoying baijiu.
I read the [April 2015] issue of HERE! Dongguan,
and I loved the article of Principals of Dongguan.
It was so fun to read about the inside stories of all
heads of schools. Again, I loved it so much, and I
think HERE!DG should know.
After all those fake ads I thought were real, now
you’ve turned things upside down. Are you trying
to play an April Fool’s Day joke on me?
Confusedly yours,
Brent Wynne
HERE!: The editor’s inbox is filled with many
things—some inspire the articles you’ll read
throughout the issue, others need only a Google
search to solve. And still others, well, they are regular
guests. Brent, you’ve been published a few times with
your interesting wit, but we have to say, none of us
were expecting a fake ad entry to come to life before
the month even ended. Your commitment to a joke
is undeniable. You registered a website just to deliver
the punchline. And to that we say, congratulations.

Antoine TaoAn R: I love Yunnan food for the
hams and goat cheeses, and loads of mountain
things that are easy for Westerners to bite

In the Local Media
Student Sits on Teacher A fourth grade student
in Zhangmutou sent his teacher to the hospital
after attacking her in class and reinjuring a wound.
Known for acts of violence, students, as well as
teachers, often took precaution to stay away from
the student. The incident occurred on March 20 as
Mrs. Chen collected drawings at the end of class.
A student told local media that the young boy
stood up suddenly, grabbed Chen’s hair and hit her
in the head. He also kneed her in the abdomen,
pushed her to the ground and sat on her. The
young boy’s family has refused to compensate
medical fees, but forced the boy to apologize. The
principal, who noted that the boy’s mother urged
him to apologize by slapping him in public, said
he was concerned that domestic abuse was causing
the misbehavior and suggested that the boy seek
professional help. (news.sun0769.com)
Free Wi-Fi Halted on Buses Citing a lack of
investment, city buses will no longer provide free
wi-fi, a service that had been put in place just
six months ago. In August 655 buses running in
the central city had the technology installed by
Shangxia Media with an investment of RMB 3
million and RMB 10,000 in daily data, though
advertisers have shown little to no interest.
Representatives of Shangxia said that advertisers
felt the demographic was limited in disposable
income. Unless the company finds a solution
to cover the cost, the project won’t be resumed.

Underground Gambling Raided Guangdong
police announced April 1, the arrests of 1,071
suspects in the biggest online gambling case in
China’s history, including 15 of the network’s
founders. Consisting of around 400,000 members

who spent RMB 1 billion a month in bets, the
network raked in a total of over RMB 400 billion,
68 percent of Dongguan’s 2014 GDP. Starting last
June, Guangdong police have been cracking down
on this underground network in 22 cities within
Guangdong and in Thailand. Hinged on national
and Hong Kong lottery numbers, 84 sessions
brought in 50 times what those lotteries made.
The network also made 18 million in fees from
199 websites mostly located on Thailand based
servers. (news.qq.com)
April Fool’s Is No Joke In a case of April
Fool’s Day gone wrong, a truck driver says he
unwittingly scammed his own brother of RMB
30,000. Mr. Long, a resident of Guangzhou’s
Panyu District, was contacted by his older brother,
Ren, requesting money due to a traffic accident.
Initially Liang thought the call was a joke, but
eventually recognized his brother’s voice, believed
him, and transferred the money. He then received
another call asking for more. This made Liang
suspicious and he called the police. When he
found his brother in Dongguan, Ren, claiming
that he had been drugged, couldn’t remember
what had happened after a lunch with clients who
had called him to come to Dongguan to deliver
goods. The money Liang sent was withdrawn
right after it arrived in the account at the China
Agricultural Bank in Humen. The case is under
investigation. (gz.ifeng.com)
Smart Muscle, Dumb Crook On the morning
of April 9, Mr. Chen of Lite Fitness Club in
Nancheng’s Xiping area found that five cell
phones and a wallet had disappeared from their
dormitory. When he later checked his account
on Alipay, China’s leading third party payment
system, he noticed that someone had attempted
to use the account to charge RMB 50 to a mobile
phone. Suspecting the number belong to the thief,
he created a WeChat account, uploaded images of
a beautiful girl and added the alleged thief. After
having Ms. Yang, a female colleague, speak with
him for five days the suspect agreed to meet in a
coffee shop, but stood her up. Fortunately, the
he mentioned that he frequents a Xiping arcade,
and on April 15, the victims went to the arcade
and recognized their quarry from his WeChat
moments. The thief was sent to police and
confessed to the crime. (news.timedg.com)
A Broader Motorized Bike Ban This year marks
the 10th year that a city ban has kept motorcycles
and electric bikes off city streets. In an April 8
meeting in Shilong, it was decided that the towns
that haven’t expanded their motorcycle-free
zones from back in 2012 will need to do so by
July 1. While the central city and all township
downtowns have banned them, only Tangxia
Town has enlarged its zone to the suggested
specifications. In 2014, more than 98,000
motorcycle traffic violations were issued and more
than 92,000 motorbikes, 23,000 electric bikes and
8,000 tricycles were discarded. (news.timedg.com)

A Gala to Remember
Family Retraces Steps
After eight years at the Sofitel Dongguan
Royal Lagoon, the Dongcheng-area
hotel renamed recently as Dongguan
Tangla, the Brazilian Women’s
Association (AMBD) is changing
venues for its annual charity gala/
fundraiser to the Wanda Vista Hotel.
Partnering again this year with Treasures
of Hope charity store, the event invites the community to enjoy an evening
themed as the events golden era.
Seven years ago, an orphan from
Dongguan who had been dumped
at birth was adopted by an American
couple, and recently, the family
brought their adopted son to visit his
hometown. Liang Xuji, the policeman

who handled the case met the family
in the Wanjiang Police Station and
introduced to them Chen Wangdi, the social worker who had reportedly
found the new born.
The One Night to Remember Charity Gala will take guests through the
history of the event, allowing regular attendees to see pictures of themselves
and hear music from the first event in 2006 and leading up to present day.
Chen told the couple, Eliot and Francisco, that she found the baby boy
in a plastic bag with his umbilical cord still attached. He had been left
at the waste center opposite the Dongfang construction material city in
Wanjiang’s Bajiaowo Village in February of 2007. She placed a report to
police immediately, and Officer Liang informed the hospital who sent
an ambulance. After treatment, the baby boy was sent to Dongguan
Children’s Welfare Center, where he was given the Chinese name
He Dongxu. He spent a year at the center, on April 2008, Eliot and
Francisco adopted Dongxu and took him to the U.S.
On May 23 starting at 7:30 p.m. gala attendees will be entertained by a
variety of music and dance performances, as well as DJs long into the night.
A grand prize trip to Istanbul, Turkey is among gifts to be won in a balloon
raffle, a fun variation on the normal lucky draw giveaways.
According to the AMBD president Alane Marder, 100 percent of event
proceeds will be donated to charity to help HANDA Rehabilitation and
Welfare Association, Captivating International, Bring Me Hope children’s
home and the Cancer Patients Circle of Sina. To purchase tickets or make
corporate donations for this good cause that is one of the events of the social
year, contact Marder at 134-2484-4968.
During the visit, Eliot and Francisco expressed their gratitude to
Liang and Chen. They said Dongxu has brought them a lot of joy and
happiness over the past seven years, and the visit and knowing how their
son was found and how he spent his first year was very meaningful.
When HERE! contacted Chen, she said she had no further comment.

Free Trade Zone
The Guangdong Free Trade Zone
was officially launched on April 21,
flagging construction projects across
the province. The same will happen
with zones in Tianjin and Fujian, which
will service transaction between Beijing
and Taiwan respectively. There are
still many details to be worked out for
changes that will affect investment and business in the logistics, finance, and
travel industries, as well as others. But most relevant to expat life, the zone,
which will take in parts of Guangzhou’s Nansha New Area and Shenzhen’s
Qianhai and Shekou, as well as Hengqin in Zhuhai, will allow cross-border
direct purchasing centers that can sell international food, health care,
maternity and digital products.
The changes are made possible by the removal or lightening of investment
regulations for service providers and international shipping companies
from Hong Kong and Macau, allowing them to set up wholly owned
international shipping companies within the zones.
“The key to the Guangdong free-trade zone is cross-border collaboration
with Hong Kong and Macau and the setting up of a supervisory body,”
said deputy chief Lin Jiang from Sun Yat-sen University’s Free-trade Zone
Research Institute. Upon completion, the 116-sq. kilometer area will be
connected to cities like Dongguan by 20 railway lines and eight highways.
A foreign-invested hospital and cheaper import cars and overseas insurance
products will also be available.

Brazilian Events on Rise
South Brazilian culture can already be
considered strong in Dongguan, and
celebrating their traditions publicly is
becoming increasingly common. On
the afternoon of April 19, almost 200
people joined together at the Designer
Hotel in Dongcheng to drink their
famous chimarrão tea, eat traditional
foods, and dance. The event was organized by the PTG, an active Brazilian
culture society.
In South Brazil, April 24 is Chimarrão Day. Gauchos, Brazilians from
the south known for their cowboy ways, celebrate it with an event called
Mateada, a traditional gathering of friends practicing the customs of
southern Brazil. This was the first organized event of its kind in Dongguan,
and to make it happen, around 10 kilos of tea was brought in by the
community from Brazil so as to make enough available for everyone
involved. Traditional cakes, pizzas, sweets and meat pies were made and
there were artisanal performances and presentation of kids’ Capoeira.
According to Crodoaldo Batista, the PTG’s new patron, a group leader
elected last January 23, the event is to become an annual happening due
to the success of this first event and a strong interest from the community.
The next event that will gather the South Brazilian community will be
a traditional lunch on May 17. People interested to attend can contact
Crodoaldo at 137-1188-5287.

DG Skyscraper News
As crews busied themselves capping the roof at the TBA Tower, the
Taiwan Business Association headquarters that currently stands as the
city’s tallest building, rumors began
that local businessmen would build
their own club even bigger and taller,
right across the street. It turns out
these rumors weren’t groundless. The project started in 2012 and hopes
to create an international landmark covering an area of 100,000 sq.
meters with five buildings and a podium. One tower, if plans continue
as scheduled today, will reach 398 meters, 109 meters higher than the
TBA Tower.
The whole project, named the Dongguan International Trade Center
(ITC), will include two office buildings, one apartment building, an
international hotel and a shopping center. Right now most construction
remains in the foundation. Its developers, the Minying Group, are
comprised of 23 local real estate companies including Everbright,
Winnerway and New Century.
Scheduled to open in September, 2017, the first phase of the ITC is a
15-story hyper mall called My Hills. The InterContinental Hotel and
Korea’s CGV Cinemas have confirmed space.

Chang’an Bar Scene Grows Dongguan’s Chang’an
Countyship, next to the districts of Dongcheng
and Nancheng, is the city’s most dense in terms of
foreign population. Catering to the demographic,
new watering holes have been opening to join veteran
establishments Hollywood Baby Chang’an and
Jim’s Roadhouse. On May 8 starting at 8 p.m. the
town connects the two with newer locations, CC café, Olde World Pub
and Moon’s Margaritas to create its first official Chang’an pub crawl.
Organized by the guys that put together bi-monthly crawls that often
host dozens of revelers in Shenzhen, the night features free drinks and
gifts along with entertainment and games, including beer pong and a
Chang’an limbo competition. “The Shenzhen pub crawl has been going
since 2014. The concept is simple, five bars, five free shots and one free
T-shirt,” said event organizer Jamie Farrar.
Students Prescribed Football The Dongguan
Education Bureau issued a formal plan in April
that will make playing football mandatory for the
city’s students. Primary and secondary schools will
be required, starting September this year, to add
football to the curriculum as part of a national
“football reform plan” championed in March by China’s first fan, Xi
Jinping, who expects such actions to improve the nation’s football
rankings. The new course has been marked to provide necessary
equipment, facilities and a professional football coach. If all goes as
planned, Dongguan will have installed the program in 40 schools by
2017. The program is promoted as an opportunity to improve student
health and the framework for physical education in public schools,
providing fundamental sporting skills to a nation of young athletes.

Yet Another Metro Delay According to Dongguan
Rail Transit, the metro will have an empty trial
run at the end of the year, but will likely not begin
regular operation until May of 2016, another delay
of six months. The opening date for the metro’s R2
Line has been delayed three times. The Line R2,
or the number two, red line, began construction in March of 2010.
The first metro carriage arrived in Dongguan in October 2014, which
was then scheduled to open this month. Later the opening time was
delayed to “the end of 2015,” and the latest published time has delayed
to next year. Dongguan Rail Transit said recently that the delay was
due to a series of tests. They said the cars were tested and debugged and
that the trial runs needed more than three months before they could be
allowed take passengers.
Indie-Films Want Clean PRD In this modern
world, environmental protection through public
awareness, in whatever way, should never end.
This is the theme to be shared on May 23, when
four indie-films present the cruel reality of how
pollution is affecting China and its interests. The
Pearl River Delta EcoCinema Festival airs at Bona
International Cinema (Dynacity). Directors from Dongguan, Hong
Kong, Macau and Beijing point their cameras at Shantou, Hong Kong,
Macau and Taipei to depict four stories of interaction between humans
and their environment. Some, like Beijing director Mo Jinjin’s main

premiere in Hong Kong. In her mind, growth is the essence of life, the
concrete ground will never cultivate her seeds. As the second stop after
a premiere in Hong Kong, the movies will continue to be shown in
Guangzhou and Shenzhen. All films are shown with English subtitles.
HK Check-In, Downtown DG Located in
Nancheng across the street from the Kande Hotel,
the horseshoe building in First International, Hong
Kong International Airport opened an offsite

its travelers on April 15. By making a pit stop to
check in at these terminals, then taking a bus to the Humen Port,
you’ll arrive at the airport by ferry and your luggage should arrive at
your destination without undue hassle. The center serves many major
Asian airlines, including Cathay Pacific, Korean Air, China Airlines,

App a Day Work Week
The ultra-popular,
messenger app wechat
has commandeered
chunks of downtime,
taking over chats
from work, play and
family. Here’s five more
ways to waste time—
one for each work day.
This scene was created with the Foto Place app in under 10 seconds.
Day 1: Monday – WeChat Voice
Life’s strange cycle begins again, but this time it’s possible that there is no end to the work week ahead.
The only escape is to sabotage my career by sending today’s work memos via WeChat Voice app. I’ve
begun recording my first short message and sending it out with the audio slowed down to a voice
deepening crawl. As the day progressed, cleverness of wit was matched only by the variety of voices I
used. Our design team was equally enthralled by the hilarity of messages in the kitty filter as they were
spooked by my rendition of the Saw catchphrase in Devil Mode. “Wanna play a game?” Fun was
thwarted once when the message refused to open, and I was bested when my iPhone-using colleague
showed that he could build his own faces to go along with the voice. Will this week ever end?
App Store: WeChat Voice
Day 2: Tuesday – Emotion Factory
First question: Why are the anatomically correct cartoon mascot icons shaking their anatomy at
me on the home page as I tap on them? Next: Why do I look so good as animated Superman with
an afro haircut? And do the makers of the Emotion Factory, sticker-making app think that my
attention span is so short that I won’t even be able to waste time without wasting more time? Not
sure if there is a need for the online store option, although my afro would look good with that
handbag. Anyway, what was this about? Ah, making animated stickers that imposes a user’s face on
dancing bodies and … ah, that’s why the icons have pee-pees.
App Store: Biao Qing Gong Chang (Chinese pinyin search)
Day 3: Wednesday – Foto Place
It’s hump day. The office is full of people congratulating themselves for climbing over the first two
days. I bet they think it’s downhill from here. I’m not sure that it is. Think I will make a documentary
film to capture the full scope of strange inner-thoughts that I am imagining for my colleagues as
they toil away productively in their cubicles. Thankfully this won’t be too much like work because
the functions are labeled in English and Chinese on Foto Place. We’ll just snap a pic. Crop and add a
caption. Done; the day’s scenes are now letterboxed film screenshots and ready to be shared.
App Store: Foto Place

HERE! DONGGUAN » MAY 2015
Day 4: Thursday – Meipai
We’ve survived the hump, and entered what is becoming known
as happy day. Weekend is around the corner. Made a 10-second
movie about the strange beauty of life and the blossoming hopes
and dreams of a brighter future. Mostly they are first person
views of my hand surprising co-workers with a slap to the back of
their head as set to a Chaplin-esque filter, complete with blackand-white reel skipping and swinging piano music. It took a
few minutes to figure out, but my can-do attitude won the day
by clicking on Meipai icons until the task could be completed.
Needed a little help to send my masterpiece to friends on WeChat.
App Store: Meipai
Day 5: Friday
– ChangBa
I now have proof positive that wasting time can save lives. The week is ending with little productivity
and no loss of life. I feel like singing. Before heading to KTV with my colleagues, I spent the entire
afternoon practicing the top hits from my favorite Backstreet Boys albums. ChangBa app, as long as
you love me, I will continue to sing with my mouth very close to the mic. You don’t seem to record
anything otherwise. I have to say, though, if it was not for your equalizer mode, the record deal of my
daydreams may not have happened. Unfortunately, only one song was truly mastered, because I spent
the entire morning fumbling through buttons!

small alleys of China. Inviting Rejane Guasso,
beauty specialist and partner at Equilibrium
Beauty Center, we wanted to experience the
old-style facial and see if the method, now
trending in some Western salons, could come
back in Dongguan vogue.
Walking through several alleys to find Aunt
Chen, a woman in her sixties trained in the hair
removal technique called threading, we learned
the process is most popular among Indian
clients. “It’s good for doing the basic forming
on eyebrows, but the detail work needs others,”
Rejane said.
In front of a mottled wall, Chen was found
Sitting on a wooden bench waiting on local
customers that range from teenagers to
80-year-old ladies. The tools on her small work
station, were simple and practical—three reels
of thread and some white powder accompanied
by razors, scissors and combs. As we watched,
each tool played its magic one by one.
Step 1: Powder
Aunt Chen
begins by
wrapping the
hair up with a
pink headband
and applying
a thin layer of
powder. The
product was new to Rejane, and we learned
it is called Qi Jie powder by Dongguaners, a
pulvis talci powder customarily applied to the
14
HERE! DONGGUAN » MAY 2015
faces of adolescents in search of love on Qi Xi,
the Chinese Valentine’s Day. Rejane said the
powder absorbs the skin’s natural oils so the
thread can gain friction for the pulling process.
Made up mostly of magnesium silicate, it also
blocks infrared light and acts as a sun blocker.
Step 2: Thread
Now it’s show
time. Aunt
Chen bites
one end of the
thread tight
with her teeth.
The two ends
in her hands
form a triangle, twisting and rubbing the skin
as the hair pulls away. Rejane said the process is
different from waxing and less painful. “It is a
little painful,” Rejane said trying the treatment
herself, “but she seems very skillful.”
Step 3: Razor
The thread
gradually
wiped clear
the powder as
Chen rubbed
the face
smooth. In
this case she
applied a little more and went to work with
her razor, patiently employing different tools
to each curve of the face. Rejane noted that the
line could be thinner if she used 100 percent
polyester thread, and said, “She has experience,
but she needs take more care about sterilization
of the materials.”
Step 4: Scissors
According to
the need of
the client, the
steps can vary.
Usually in the
final step, Chen
uses scissors
to trim the
eyebrows. Afterword, the 10-minute process
is concluded and the face is washed in a red
plastic pail, the hair is brushed in a mirror, and
the customer pays in satisfaction.
A bridal custom
Chen usually charges RMB 10 per treatment,
but she discounts regulars, elderly and disabled
customers. All of whom seem to enjoy the
old-style business practices. There is no pushing
of beauty products. Mrs. Wen, a woman in
her fifties, told me that she has come once a
month for ten years. She said she never went
to modern beauty salons. “It’s cheap and
convenient here.” Aunt Chen’s treatment is
primitive, yet simple and transparent. It’s
also, to some, a connection to tradition that is
disappearing daily.
In days past, the brides of Dongguan would
come to Chen for a facial before putting
on their wedding day make-up. Today the
tradition still lives in smaller numbers, but the
next generation of beauticians are even fewer.
Aunt Chen first worked as an apprentice
for a skilled street beautician who spent 50
years performing the technique. When she
left Dongguan for Hong Kong, Chen took
the torch, and after 27 years her business will
end with her retirement. “I’ve trained three
apprentices, but all have given up.”
by Edward O’Neill
A year and half ago, an expat football squad arrived to a scene they never thought would be
confronted on the pitch. The opposing team had made a strange choice, troublesome to many,
offensive to others. Why would they name themselves after a dictator responsible for the deaths
of millions? Are they insensitive or just uninformed? The article leaves the decision to you.
Team Hitler (on left) gathers to
take a picture and exchange
team banners with another of
the league’s teams.
A TOUGH, UGLY MATCH
I’ll never forget the night I played football
against Hitler. It was a wet and bitter
winter night in Nancheng. As we were
warming up, the Chinese opposition
arrived. Our Australian defender pointed
out the back of their jersey and asked, “Is
that a Swastika?”
I couldn’t believe it so we went for a jog
around the pitch to take a closer look. As
16
HERE! DONGGUAN » MAY 2015
we passed the other team stretching, we
saw on the back of their fluorescent green
jersey were the swastika, and printed
underneath was Hitler.
We were unsure if we should play the
match. My team was made up of players
that were Jewish and others came from
places like the Netherlands, England
and France, all of whom had suffered at
the hands of this team’s patron mascot.
Some of our crew posed the question: if
we played against them, were we saying
what they were doing was okay. Others
doubted whether they could control
their emotions. My captain made the call,
“Screw it! Let’s play them and destroy
them.”
It was a tough, ugly match. Players on
both sides flew into tackles and smashed
into shoulder charges. Defenders kicked
strikers off the pitch while strikers dragged
their blades down the calves of defenders.
Elbows were swung, legs were stamped.
We swore and cursed each other in English
and Chinese. Every few minutes a fight
started and players had to be broken up.
When the final whistle came we had won.
We celebrated in their faces while they
clapped and jeered. Nobody shook hands
and the two captains continued to argue
long after the match had finished.
THE REMATCH
A year and a half later, on a warm spring
afternoon, I am sat opposite the captain of
Team Hitler in an office in Nancheng.
No No, works as a designer for children’s
clothes in Houjie, a town just southwest
of Dongguan’s modernizing banking
district where he moved after graduating
from university in northern Guangdong’s
Shaoguan City. He has a cravat tucked
inside a blazer while his long fringe comes
over his thick rimmed glasses. I have just
asked him who his favorite footballer is
and he speaks gently and listens politely
while we share memories of the French
striker Thierry Henry.
No No is far from the neo-Nazi I expected
to meet. In fact, it turns out that the idea
to call the team Hitler was not even his.
More than half the
team voted for Hitler,”
recalls No No.
TAKE A STEP BACK
I ask No No why they voted for Hitler.
“As a football team, we want to win every
match. We want our team to be powerful
and we think the name gives our players
confidence,” he explains.
When I ask about the name, No No is
quick to defend his team, “We don’t want
to be associated with any fighting or
killing. We just admire Hitler’s ambition.”
For most Westerners, it seems impossible
to be able to admire Hitler’s ambition
without also thinking about what he did
during the World War II or the Holocaust.
For some Chinese, however, they have
been brought up to view leaders from
their history in a compartmentalized way.
In River Town, a book by Peter Hessler
about his time teaching in Sichuan, he
observes how his students rationalize and
justify their leaders. While discussing those
men, the ones that charged the way to the
Cultural Revolution, his students dismiss
the blunders that lead to the death and
poverty of so many Chinese citizens by
balancing them with the achievements
that laid groundwork for today’s
burgeoning power. “As everyone knows,
no gold is pure, no man is perfect,” one
student wrote. “One flaw cannot obscure
the splendor of the jade,” wrote another.
Later in the book, Hessler’s Chinese
teacher applies the same logic when
talking about Hitler. “Most of [Chinese]
have two contrary ideas; that Hitler was a
great leader, and that he was a crazy man
By defending their decision to name their
team after Hitler, No No is making the
same distinction.
DRILL THE BASICS
As we talk, I feel like No No does not really
know or understand Hitler. When he talks
about what Hitler did he refers to “Hitler
and his battles,” when he talks about the
victims of Hitler he says he “killed many
British.” During the interview, No No never
once mentions the Holocaust.
Instead of wearing a
fluorescent green shirt
with a giant swastika,
they now wear a pink
shirt with a small
iron eagle.
For some, it may be difficult to understand
how someone cannot know about such
things, but it is important to remember
that history is geographical.
Chinese may not know much about what
happened in the Western theater of war,
but how much do Westerners know about
what happened in the Eastern theater.
How many Americans know about the
Rape of Nanking? How many Europeans
have heard of Unit 731?
History is geographical. In school we
are taught about our own country. A
schoolboy in Dongguan does not learn
about what happened in Germany during
the war in the same way a schoolgirl in
Manchester does not learn about what
happened in China during the war.
“At the beginning our team had a sponsor,
but they cancelled the sponsorship.
Everyone chipped in to sponsor the team
so we had a dinner and let everyone vote
for the new name.
The night my team played against Hitler,
they had some Africans playing with them.
It is telling that the Africans also did not
understand why we were angry with the
name of the team.
One teammate proposed Hitler. I said
it’s not appropriate, it’s too political. The
others said it did not matter. This is China,
not Europe. More than half the team voted
for Hitler,” recalls No No.
The other name for the team that was
suggested was the B-52s. Instead of
being named after a dictator responsible
for the deaths of millions of people they
were very nearly named after a pop band
responsible for the songs Rock Lobster
and Love Shack.
who did terrible things. We have both of
these ideas at once, you see.”
TOKEN GESTURES
Team captain No No poses with British football star
Michael Owen at a 2014 promotional event wearing
the team’s original uniform. Owen was unaware.
Last summer, Michael Owen, one of
England’s top scorers and winner of the
European player of the year, was at a
televised press conference in Nancheng
District. He poses for pictures and in one
of those photos is No No wearing his
Hitler jersey.

NONO, NO NAZI
They are not racists. Their team has
members from Africa and No No has
often had to defend his teammates from
other teams. “One of our African players
is stronger and bigger than most Chinese
players. Sometimes he runs into another
player and the other player gets injured.
It is just an accident, but the Chinese
overreact and blame our African player.”
When No No speaks about Europeans
he has nothing but respect for their style
of play, “They play as a team. They are
serious about winning and they give
everything to win.”
The team, on game days at least, is multicultural, with
players recruited from the Nigerian expat community.
“While I was taking my photo with
Michael Owen an official from the local
football association saw the shirt and
asked my teammate about its meaning.
Later he spoke to me and said it was not
acceptable,” recalls No No.
They were told if they wished to remain
part of the association then they would
have to make changes. They agreed but
the changes made were nothing more
than token gestures. Instead of wearing
a fluorescent green shirt with a giant
swastika, they now wear a pink shirt with a
small iron eagle. The team continued to be
pronounced as Hitler in Chinese, but one
of the characters is now wrote differently.
In No No’s own words, “We wanted to
keep the Hitler feeling.”
18
HERE! DONGGUAN » MAY 2015
“Later he spoke to me
and said it was not
acceptable,” recalls
No No.
For a team named after Hitler, they are
surprisingly kind and caring. During
another match in Nancheng, an opponent
broke the leg of one of No No’s
teammates in a malicious tackle. “The
injured player was just a normal guy and
his hospital bill was over ten thousand
yuan. Considering our teammate’s
economic situation each of us donated
some money towards paying the hospital
bill,” tells No No.
When I went into this interview I was
prepared to argue with a neo-Nazi.
Instead I met a fashion designer ignorant
of who Adolf Hitler really was.
This made the interview more interesting,
but also more complex. They do not
believe in Nazism, but they promote those
ideals by wearing their insignia and calling
themselves Hitler. They have no intention
to offend anyone, but when they do they
are unable to understand why.
Even though No No is not a neo-Nazi, I
feel the likelihood of him ever changing
the name is just as low as if he were.
THERE IT IS
At the end of the interview we talk about
that match a year and a half ago on the
wet and bitter winter night. That night one
of our regular players did not show up;
an attacking midfielder from Israel with a
short fuse. I tell No No that his team was
lucky that player did not show up that
night.
I say that maybe one day we can have a
rematch. We talk about ways we can stop
it from turning into another ugly match.
I suggest they wear kits without any
swastikas, iron eagles or their logo. No No
replies with a straight face, “Well, maybe
next time we play, just don’t bring your
Jew friends.” It looks like there will be no
rematch after all.

A Guide to Chinese
Body Language
For those calling China home, it can be easy
to think you’ve figured it all out. Many of us
reach a plateau in understanding Chinese
culture, leaving little room for new ideas regarding a country with depth unlike any other.
Don’t overestimate yourself.
You have the ability to be absolutely and utterly
wrong. You’ve lost count of situations that have
gone sideways, and when reading situations
and having conversations in a foreign culture,
whether you’re visiting China for the first time
or are a seasoned expat with years of living
in the East, you’ve recognized the struggle
of communication. But other times, you’ve
walked away with total confidence, uncon-
by Jeffrey Hackbarth
scious only to your own obliviousness. Don’t let
it happen again.
We were fortunate enough to speak with two
local psychologists who specialize in Kinesics,
the study of body language and nonverbal
behavior otherwise known as body language.
Vincent Chen has masters degree from the
Chinese Academy of Science in Beijing and
King, a masters student at Peking University,
has a counselor’s certificate from Zhong Da
Training School. With their help we were able
to shed light on a few oddities that might have
caught your eye at one point or another. Get
to know these 20 new ways to read your surroundings by studying Chinese body language.
EMOTION BILLBOARD
Facial Expressions
Facial expressions are seen as a direct link
to our emotions and can be found in almost
all mammals and even in many animal
species. Out of all components of
nonverbal communication,
facial expressions are
considered to
be the most
universal and there is debate as to whether
they are actually genetic. There is a lot of
evidence that suggests this is the case and
may also be why a person who is born without
sight instinctively smiles when expressing their
happiness. Regardless of these facts, there are
undoubtedly a handful of Chinese facial expressions that are distinct from other cultures.
The Do’s and Don’ts
CE
POINTING TO THE FA
20
HERE! DONGGUAN » MAY 2015
This gesture is often found in contemporary Chinese body language, it has
historically been the way to refer to
oneself. It is a question of where the
soul or essence of a person resides.
With the introduction of foreign films
and television in China, this gesture
is slowly phasing out for its Western
counterpart of pointing to the heart.
Although it’s still common among
certain communities in China, you’ll
likely be understood by using either.
TOUCHING SO
M
EONE’S HE AD
According to some people in China,
touching someone else’s head, especially a child’s, is believed to have lifelong
effects and is therefore considered
impolite. The head is the window to the
soul. Touching someone here, especially
a child could be a problem for some
people. Especially if this child grows up
lacking intelligence, as our psychologists put it, then the blame could be put
directly on you. On the contrary, being
invited by someone to touch their child’s
head could be seen as a sign of respect
and or trust.
THE NO. 2 FACE
 This facial expression has its roots in
Chinese Opera and is characterized by squinted
eyes, a tight, raised lower lip and a lowered
brow. Tied in with the outward pointing thumb
this displays authority and confidence, possibly
even bragging rights. Seen as a negative gesture and common among elders and Laobans,
this gesture begs one’s worship.
FANNING
 When it comes to the traditional rules of attraction
in Western culture, they do not apply in China. In fact,
they appear to be all together different. When a Chinese woman is confronted by someone of attraction,
often a natural reaction is to turn away from the handsome subject and direct her eyes downward avoiding
eye-contact. If conversation cannot be avoided, the
mother of all gestures is then employed.
For our purposes, we’ll call this fanning. With a long
history of use in China, it is the equivalent of female
peacocking; traditionally seen in Beijing Opera, film
and television. This is displayed when a woman masks
the lower portion of her face from her potential lover
using a fan. In modern days, this is simply done using a
hand to hide a few squeamish giggles and is representative of the woman’s timid nature.
HANDS DOWN BECKON
When calling someone over to meet
with you, it’s considered very rude to
use a palm up single digit gesture.
Once again, this is related to the
accusatory nature of using a gesture
representative of arrogance and is
likened to calling one’s dog. Instead,
extend your arm out facing the palm
of your hand down and raise all four
fingers up into your palm.
POINT YOUR FEET
When in the seated position during social
engagements, it’s best not to cross your
leg over the knee pointing your dirty
foot in someone else’s direction. Like
most gestures, the reason behind this
is related to singling an individual out.
These gestures may be taken as being
accusatory and should be avoided in
most situations, especially when in the
company of superiors or women.

A DIRECT SIGNAL
Culture-specific Gestures
Quite possibly, gestures are the most
dangerous of all components of body language.
With little crossover among cultures, giving a
thumbs up in the wrong place could land you in
an embarrassing or even dangerous situation.
The thing about gestures that makes them
unique is our innate ability to use them in place
of words. This is very true in China.
If you’ve ever been stuck at home or in a hotel
without wi-fi, chances are that you have seen
a Beijing Opera once or twice on television.
This is perhaps the best example of Chinese
gesturing, and the cultural powerhouse has
been woven into the
architecture of life here.
One or two aren’t found
anywhere else, due in
part to the country’s
long and culture-rich
history combined with
a somewhat isolated
society.
WHAT'S A
HONGBAO
 This infamous gesture usually indicates
foul-play is at hand and that someone has
been caught red-handed. With different
versions created by different personalities, this gesture typically involves a hand
raised, partially covering the face while
stroking an eyebrow or two. As though
someone could hide their feelings of guilt
behind their hand, this pose displays an understanding of one’s faults and discomfort
in dealing with them.
SHENMA???
 Being a very comical Asian posture, this
pose stems, once again from Chinese Opera.
Although not typically seen, it can be found
within your more intimate or personal relationships in China. Displayed only when extremely
disappointed or dumbfounded (perhaps jokingly), this gesture is all about the slumped
over shoulders synchronized with a sudden
paralysis of the jaw muscles and eyelids. This
is the equivalent of the more recently famous
“facepalm” found in the West.
SHOW AFFECTION
22
HERE! DONGGUAN » MAY 2015
While a slap on the back or a kiss on the cheek
may be signs of affection or respect in some
places, there is little understanding of physical
contact among acquaintances, friends and
even family members in China. These types
of gestures are usually met with a noticeable
amount of uneasiness. Although personal
space might not be an issue while waiting in a
queue, when in social settings, Chinese prefer
a larger degree of physical space. Restricting
yourself to a handshake when greeting others
is recommended instead.
READING THE
SCULPTURE
Posture displays character
WECHAT GAVE
ME SCOLIOSIS
A person’s posture is understood to be a reflection of their characteristics, and depending
on their current situation, it is representative
of mood. Many types of posture can be seen
by simply hitting the streets of Dongguan or
in local shopping malls. A person’s posture
changes the least out of all gestures and can
be a good tell as to what that person might
be like. As cruel as it sounds to judge a book
by its cover in this way, it is thought to be
reflective of reality. China is filled with people
from all walks of life and because of this, it is
easy to see a variety of postures just about
everywhere you go.
 Photo-taking can be an interesting
subject in China and this gesture is proof of
that. Found in abundance among popular
tourist destinations, shopping malls, gaginducing art installments and bathrooms
alike; the scoliosis pose holds a powerful
grip on China’s youth. Characterized by a
slightly tilted head with a downward facing
shoulder, those conveying this gesture
appear to be leaning against their egos.
To summarize its meaning, this gesture
is saying: “I’m so damn cute, there’s
simply no possible way to fit one more
person into this camera frame.’’
THE
PROPAGANDA
POSE
 Originating again from Chinese Opera and Mao
era propaganda posters, this gesture screams
China. Characterized by having straight posture,
shoulders drawn back giving way an open chest
and arm extended into the future. This says, “I’m
confident, humble and ready to face any super
villains that come my way.”
Common among more confident younger generations, it’s not seen in the body language of elders
because it is reserved for people of wealth.
Although this gesture is rarely used off-stage, its
elements, those of its raised brow and pursedlipped facial features, can be employed for other
purposes. Like many power poses in the West,
if this pose is held for a short while (for example:
before a meeting or job interview), it has been
shown to have the capacity to boost confidence
levels dramatically and could mean the difference
between success and failure.
The Do’s and Don’ts
WISH GOOD FORTUNE
When unsure how to express your
gratitude toward someone without
words, cover your right fist, the fighting
fist, with your left hand and put it to
your chest. This should be the go-to
gesture. Especially used during the
Holiday season, it represents wishing
others good fortune and can be used in
just about any situation when thanking
someone for their good deeds.
www.heredg.com » MAY 2015
23
I’M THE BOSS
 When it comes to the ultimate power
pose, stick a foot out and place your hands on
your hips. The chest is barreled out showing
strength, but the abdomen is left vulnerable to
attack as if to say, “you can attack If you like,
but it won’t end well for you.” Consulting with
psychologist Peter King, we learned that the
only way to take a more powerful stance is
to stick out the finger to point, often a no no,
unless of course, you are in charge.
DO YOU HAVE
A BED I CAN
BORROW?
 Looking a bit miserable and broken, this
gesture is made famous by young and old alike
but particularly the middle aged. The body
position is characterized by a taco-shaped
posture and hands rested on the hips to match
the weepy eyes and long face. It says, “I’ve
been working 14 hours straight and now I’m
waiting for my bus to get home.” According
to psychologist Vincent, “historically this body
language originated amongst hard-laboring
farmers who spent their days hunched over in
the rice fields. It simply shows that the person is
super tired physically.”
STARE INTO THE EYES

HERE! DONGGUAN » MAY 2015
As a foreigner living in China, it’s not uncommon to find yourself in a staring match
with curious locals. However, holding direct
eye contact for extended periods of time
can be considered aggressive behavior
depending on the context. In considering
the situation of lingering eye contact from a
young Chinese on the foreigner, extended
stares usually come simply from a place of
curiosity and should not be taken as a sign
of disrespect or hostility.

Although, this gesture could perhaps be found in

China the upward facing palm is a common gesture
of confidence and determination and it can come in a

more than 80,000 pieces from different
categories. Although the museum
also helps promote the company’s
image, you will still get an eye opening
experience taking a tour there.
The Xiajiang Cheng Village bridge was opened on January 27, 1984 and was paid for by villagers through a pontage toll,
each villager paid RMB 10 and anyone older than 16 was required to give three days labor. It was closed to traffic in 1996.
HISTORY
At the end of the Ming Dynasty—that
was more than 300 years ago—there
was a beach on which local fishermen
commonly dried their nets. In their
dialect, a fishing net was called Gu
bu. That was until Gu, thought
unsophisticated in its spelling by a
village scholar, was changed to its
dialectal homophone Gao bu, and that,
it has remained since. Over time, a town
was built as the population increased.
The town that resides by a fork in
the East River has been a traditional
agricultural town that relies heavily on
crop production, poultry farming and
fishing. Not until the opening-up in the
late 1970’s did they begin to develop a
manufacturing industry with the aid of
foreign investment.
TODAY
In addition to its traditional industries,
which make up the majority of its
economy, it’s striving for a more
industrial future that will match
its ambitions, like most of the
towns in Dongguan. Although it’s
not among the top list in terms of
foreign investment, it has achieved
some notable victories in developing
an international, export-oriented
economy. Today it is home to
some very successful international
companies, including the Yue Yuen
Group, which set up the world’s biggest
sport shoes factory exporting sport
shoes brands like Nike and Adidas. It
38

is also home to Lee and Man Holding
Company and the world’s largest
eyewear company, Luxottica, which
opened two manufacturing facilities
here in 1998, the year it started its
operations in China.
WHAT CAN I DO?
There has been a custom of racing
dragon boats in Gaobu for nearly 300
years. All of its 19 village communities
have dragon boats and hold annual
races. Just imagine that while thousands
of oars are rowing, tens of thousands
of people are crowding to watch.
When the annual Dragon Boat Festival
approaches, people select the best fish,
shrimps and rice to cook the fragrant
and sweet dragon boat rice and dragon
boat festival glutinous rice dumplings.
They invite people in the neighborhood
to “play with the Dragon in the water
of luck,” their way of saying row the
dragon boat.¬ The town joins other
towns and districts in a series of dragon
boat races lasting for nearly a month,
making it one of the unique scenes of
Dongguan. This is common among the
towns in watery areas like Wanjiang,
Wangniudun, Zhongtang, Machong,
Shijie and Hongmei.
In Gaobu, probably unknown to
many, there's a Chinese Architectural
Ceramic Museum. The museum was
first funded and built by Weimei
Group, a leading ceramics-making
company in China. The museum was so
sophisticated that it was later upgraded
to a national level museum. Inside, eight
exhibition halls display a collection of
It seems almost every town in
Dongguan has its local food or
something that delivers pride to the
town and its traditions, like goose meat
in Dalingshan and basketball in Dalang.
In Gaobu, it’s fish balls, especially the
ones from Xiansha Village. It’s unique in
a way that the cooks are said to choose
only the tenderest parts of the dace
fish as the key ingredient. The proper
approach is to assure a pure flavor by
raising the fish in ponds free of ducks
or geese. After being filleted, the meat
is beaten with metal rods for more than
six hours and shaped into balls. Xiansha
fish balls taste chewy and springy.
Villagers joke that when dropped onto a
hard surface, they can bounce like a ping
pong ball several feet into the air.
GETTING THERE
Gaobu is across a river from Wanjiang,
so it’s very close to the city area, just a
20-minute drive. There are buses that
travel to Gaobu Town at the three main
bus stations. You can also take Bus No.
4, which goes through Dongcheng to
get there.
At the family home of Li Xiangyun, a Gaobu Town
war hero and a tank man in the Red Army, Li’s
brother tells town officials the story of his brother
joining the services at age 14 and fighting up till his
death in 1952 at age 19.

China Mobile Game News
As dongguan’s industry
moves closer toward
tech market. Our
business experts have
taken the chance to
give us some updates on
changes in the makers
of mobile apps.
his year may be the one when
China leads the world in online
gaming. China’s online mobile
and PC gaming market, as of
2014, exceeded RMB 100 billion, compared
to the larger but slower growing U.S. market.
Presently, China’s video game console ban is
less relevant simply because in China as in the
rest of the world, mobile gaming is soaring
in double digits. As of 2014, China’s mobile
gaming market came to exceed US$1 billion
per quarter.
Chinese audiences have also demanded
graphics-intensive free-to-play-games. Video
game releases are still subject to China’s
Ministry of Culture oversight, which is
less restrictive than the movie content and
distribution censorship. How then might a
foreign strategic investor participate in China’s
online gaming market, particularly in mobile
applications?
China’s online gaming product market is
currently led by Tencent, followed by Netease,
Sohu spinoff Changyou, Shanda, and Kingsoft.
In addition, platforms attempt to aggregate
game players. Sky-Mobi is a leading platform
in mobile downloadable games. In addition,
Baidu and Qihu as search engines; Alibaba as
an ecommerce platform; and Xiaomi as a smart
phone company integrating into software, are
recognizing the value of establishing a presence
in mobile game downloads.
Partnering with these incumbents initially
appeared to be the least risky alternative for
most overseas game developers. Foreign game
originators such as Take-Two introduced NBA
2K through Tencent. Activision brought World
of Warcraft, to Netease. One notable rupture
occurred between Shanda and its ally Korean
game developer WeMade Entertainment.
In 2003 Shanda developed a similar game
as the one licensed from WeMade, and after
42
HERE! DONGGUAN » May 2015
being sued was able to reach a settlement with
WeMade in 2009.
Upstart Xiaomi (privately owned) represents
a mobile phone maker integrating backwards
into game production as well as downstream
game distribution. One firm has joined Xiaomi
as a partner. Moscow-founded Game Instinct
(now headquartered in Vilnius, Lithuania) has
modified a game to run on Xiaomi phones.
How then might a
foreign strategic investor
participate in China’s
online gaming market ..?
Paris-based Ubisoft chose the organic
route, establishing a Shanghai based game
development center. However, Ubisoft’s
reach has not yet translated to depth, and the
company overall is struggling for profitability.
Pure distributors, such as GameStop,
which leads sales in America, Europe and
Australia, would be at a disadvantage. Even
with Gamestop’s rating strengths, will have
trouble in mobile game downloads until
demonstrating command of Chinese and local
game consumer tastes. Which is why it has, to
date, been noticeably absent from Asia.
Another media firm, Los Angeles based j2
Global, owns IGN (San Francisco based)—a
respected rater of games with Chinese and
Japanese language translation capability—but
IGN has not expanded aggressively in China’s
game market. Its parent’s focus has instead been
business cloud services for digital media.
Strategic investors in the game and
entertainment space might prepare themselves
for role reversal in their home markets. Already
in 2011, Tencent invested US$400 million in
Riot Games which made League of Legends. In
June 2012, Tencent bought a minority position
in Epic Games, maker of Gears of War.
Another Chinese gaming firm chose an organic
approach to growth abroad. In February
2015, NetEase established a North American
headquarters in Silicon Valley’s Redwood
Shores. It will be releasing a Chinese game,
Speedy Ninja, rewritten for release in the West.
With the advent of dynamic Chinese mobile
gaming firms in the West, what might be
left for Western firms to consider in China?
Actually, there is plenty to consider. As
demonstrated by Chinese non-game developers
who are aggregating and distributing mobile
games (SkyMobi, Qihu) there is opportunity in
targeting the gamer. US-based Millennialmedia
identified games as the leading mobile
application category with the largest number
of impressions in 2014, ahead of music,
productivity tools, communications, dating,
news, weather, health and books. Mobile
gaming isn’t just about gaming; it’s reaching a
rising generation of consumers in China. That’s
a giant cross-selling opportunity for Western
advertisers, service and strategic firms.

Who Would Know
A Day in the Life
David Chai is the chairman of one of the most
influential business organizations in Dongguan.
He has a natural leader’s temperament, speaking
slowly and controlled after taking a moment to
think. To him, hard work is a primary stage in
a worthwhile life, but family, which he started
later in life, gives him a sense of purpose.
Mr. Chai is the chairman of the Taiwanese
Businessmen Association in Dongguan. There
are 142 others like it in 142 cities around
China, but this one is the most prolific. Their
efforts and funding have opened, among
others, a school, a hospital and the city’s
tallest skyscraper to serve Dongguan’s tens of
thousands of Taiwanese transplants.
He has seen China modernize, influenced by
the outside world and new generations.
His own character and work ethic was
influenced by his father’s generation who
moved to Taiwan from north China 70
years ago, and studying in the West.
Upon finishing an undergraduate degree in
atmospheric sciences, he did as so many other
Taiwanese from the era, and moved to the U.S.
for further schooling in 1976 at the young age
of 22. He finished two masters degrees and
took away invaluable international experience
before returning home.
“When I got back to Taiwan after living six or
seven years in the States I felt the pace for the
regular people, even the people working on
the street, was slower than the pace that I’m
used to,” said Chai. In his youth he learned
what it meant to be Taiwanese, in his 20’s
he learned what it meant to compete on the
world stage. And he made that count spending
the following decades as president of Maxim
Enterprises, Inc., a company that today
makes wooden toys, inflatable beds, garment
accessories
and runs a real
estate agency.
... the government will
subsidize 10 percent to
15 percent of the value The next stage

again. He was
“In everybody’s life cycle, in different
age stages, you should have a different
attitude. But I also believe that when you’ve
become established—not only business-wise,
career-wise, but also family-wise—one thing is
you need to slow down to enjoy the other part
of your life,” said Chai.
He is the son of a strict father who spoke only
to his four sons in the role of disciplinarian,
but in early adulthood, Chai came to learn the
deep emotion that drove his father, noticing
how proud he was at college graduation as
he refused to stop recording with the family’s
video camera, even as sweat soaked his brow on
the day-long campus tour.
41 and living
in Taiwan, unmarried and business minded
when he was introduced to the women that
would become his wife.
She would eventually birth two children and
reinforce and push him to give back to the
community. “I don’t get to meet them at all,
but I provide a lot of help with them and trying
to assist some families when they are in trouble
when they have an accident or expenses and or
even take a surgery,” he said.
Benefit of Experience
“I’m very glad I got married late. If I had
gotten married before 30 then I probably
wouldn’t have been able to spend much time
with them,” said Chai. His go to advice is, “be
focused,” and he tends to put it on one thing
at a time.
When Taiwanese companies like his began
arriving in Dongguan some 25 years ago, the
business environment was wild, and he and
others adapted, failed, succeeded and moved
on to the next project. He learned much in that
time, mostly, get together and stay together.
“When I started the business I was on remote
control, but things didn’t work. Only when
I came here, my deputy resigned and I came
here by myself and I realized there are so many
things,” said Chai.
He will tell you to pay attention to detail,
and not just the details that seem obvious,
obviously. When working contracts with
Dongguan’s many factories, he recommends
giving more attention to negative side as well.
Don’t get stuck on delivery details, price and
quality specs alone, remember to lay out the
consequences for underperforming.
But a more advantageous bit of advice is to
remember that any business in China can
benefit from government assistance. It is not
necessary to have a combined force with your
own skyscraper. “To reduce the numbers of
your workers, the government will subsidize
10 percent to 15 percent of
the value of the machines,
and some of the towns will
also subsidize the same
percent. So if you put
them together that can be
up to 30 percent”
David Chai
Chairman - Taiwanese Business Association
Tie or bowtie?
Recently I don’t—only if I attend a big ceremony. The government
officers, they don’t put on ties, so I don’t put on ties. And our laborers
they don’t put on ties, so I don’t put on ties, because they are working.
So I don’t want to put on one either.
Favorite Taiwanese musician?
Teresa Teng, Tsai Chin or Jody Chiang.
Positive reinforcement or light a fire?
I think I’ve also expressed my feelings in a negative way, however, this
is not going to encourage them at all. This is just going to make them
upset or scared to talk to me in the future, so I usually control
myself as much as possible.

Spaghetti Bonds (Humen)
A Nice Surprise
Situated in the south of Dongguan, almost directly between
Shenzhen and Guangzhou; the developing backwater town
of Humen may not be first on everybody’s list of places to
frequent. That said, as the newly affluent township begins
to see a greater influx of foreigners, more Western style
restaurants are beginning to crop up. Whether on business,
sightseeing at the opium war museum, or just passing
through to snap up those bargain basement prices at the
renowned Huang He shopping mall, it is a safe bet you will
need to know where to get some decent food.
As with many towns around Dongguan city, Humen does
not really have much in the way of Western food, but if
you make your way to rainbow mall and look for the apple
store. Virtually adjacent to it you will see a restaurant called
Spaghetti Bonds with a large birdcage outside (next to the
Thai restaurant).
An independent
establishment, owned
and run by a local, Bonds
does a fantastic job of
exploiting the surprising
lack of Western restaurants
in Humen. The place has a
naturally welcoming aura and
customers will occasionally
hear the tinkle of the piano
near the entrance. The menu
is primarily Italian based with
a choice of various pizzas,
pastas and risottos, but the
restaurant is particularly
revered for its prime cuts of seasoned beef in their salad.
On my recent visit, I asked what they recommended
I should try, to which I was told the Philadelphia deli
sandwich was their most popular order. A delicious winner
for me, especially at the price of RMB 33. Most of the
menu is reasonably priced with prices topping RMB 100
for things like Angus steak or lobster. They also have a good
selection of regular Western desserts and an extensive range
of imported wines.
As a resident of Humen for over two years, I have searched
most corners of this growing town. If you are looking for
something a little more low-key than the glitzy hotels for
Western cuisine, Spaghetti Bonds is an absolute must.

BAR
REVIEW
by Sean Caufiell
Unique Bar (Chang’an)
DRINK & PLAY
China is full of every type of establishment with an English
name that seems out of place to a native speaker, but Unique
Bar is actually quite unique. It’s a mash-up of different
styles—a Chinese night club with upholstered seating lining
the walls; a brick-style American bar with greasy food;
images and memorabilia of European footballers plastered
everywhere.
The rooftop bar
is paired with a
covered, outdoor
football field that
can be rented for
RMB 200 per 90
minutes, and is
large enough to
accommodate two
teams of five players. If you’re feeling goofy after a few beers,
you can strap on a large, plastic inflatable that is fitted with
shoulder straps and covers your body above the knee.
Play a match with your mates, bumping off of each other
and trying your damnedest to control the ball, or just get a
running start and fling yourself across the field, rolling and
bouncing across the artificial grass. Plan ahead with a set of
clothes for play, and a set of clothes for drink. A clean locker
room with a half dozen showers is available to store your
things and get cleaned up.
Six screens bathe one side of the bar in perpetual football
and basketball. Asahi and Carlsberg are served on draft for
RMB 30, but after driving all the way to Chang’an, you
should treat yourself and buy in bulk. A three liter tower
only runs RMB 130.
Except for Tsingtao, the remaining selection of cans
and bottles is imported from Denmark, Ireland, France,
Germany, Netherlands and Mexico. The bar is not well
liquored. Requesting a gin and tonic was met with a “mei
you.” Instead, fill up on Long Island Ice Teas and take lots of
photos so you can piece things together the next morning.
Heads up, a friend warned me that my bank card purchase
may not be secure. Like some other small businesses, the
business named on the receipt was that of an electrical
supplies store, so it’s possible the bar is not careful with how
it handles e-transactions. Unique gets a yellow card for that.
Pay in cash.

WHAT’S THE
DEAL WITH?
by Tracy Lu
Turtle Farming
Turtles have a unique place in the heart of China. People
make meals out of them and raise them in their own homes
as pets. Some even worship them. In recent years, turtle
breeding has seen a dramatic upturn in profitability and
investors are growing, especially in the realm of rural home
owners. But is this popular business just another pyramid
scam with no end?
To find out, we asked Mr. Luo, a 66-year-old local man,
about his business. Luo has raised turtles for almost a decade,
buying his first common yellow pond turtle for RMB 70 as
a baby in 2007 on account of his personal affection for the
creature he said. Today the value has soared ten times. He
told us that raising turtles doesn’t require much equipment
or technology, nor time and money.
Two years ago he realized
the market’s profitability
and expanded, modifying
his rooftop into four
breeding houses with
constantly maintained
temperature and
humidity. With hundreds
of turtles from five
species, he tallies their
total worth at RMB 1
million. Last year, he
sold a one kilogram rednecked pond turtle at
RMB 80,000 after raising it for a year.
The golden coin turtle, with three bulging stripes on its shell
has been the highest valued for decades and has been hunted
into scarcity. Today, even babies are sold for RMB 20,000
each. They are described in ancient Chinese medical books
dating back thousands of years and are still considered an
effective cancer treatment in Chinese folk medicine.
Reproducing turtles in a home-based scale in Dongguan is
quite common, almost every local knows someone who is
making money farming turtles. But where does the market
end? It seems everybody is selling their turtles to another
farmer, who will raise them for a while and sell to another
investor. The number of turtles is rising but there’s no
consumer market, few restaurants or individuals buy these
rare species. To some extent, Luo knows the industry is full
of bubbles, but until it bursts, he wants to make as much
cash as he can.

Starwood School Through a long-running
cooperation with a local vocational school,
Sheraton Dongguan has consistently found
suitable talent. On April 17, another round of
the international recruitment day for Starwood
Hotels and Resorts kicked off throughout
China. At the Dongguan stop, instead of
holding a traditional job fair, hotel management
spent some quality time through group
activities with potential employees at the Guangdong Innovative Technical College
in Houjie. Although the school has been delivering graduates for two years to the
hotel for internships, this is the first time hotel executives and department managers
walked into the school and communicated with students face to face. “This school
has become a Starwood school. Every department sent its manager. The director
from engineering can explain to students about internal operations,” said Ken Thian,
director of sales and marketing.

Delicious Things
There is a time to hold on to what’s dear to you,
and there is a time to adapt. We can do both with
a little homemade cooking.
hicken wings. Let’s take a moment
to savor that thought together.
What comes to mind? Is it your
favorite variety? Or the times in
which you usually eat them? Do you think
of health effects or the cleanliness of the way
you eat them? Or, do you think of the debate
between the pro-breading and anti-breading
camps or whether they’re best cooked by deep
frying or baking?
Whatever the actual thoughts or wherever
you’re from, the point is that you’ve probably
got some opinion of them, and you’ve most
likely tried them. I’d even venture to guess—
unless you’re vegetarian, have some diet
restriction not allowing you to eat them or
generally have a distaste for delicious things—
you probably like them. In fact, even if you
think they’re completely unhealthy, there’s a
very good chance you love them.
Everyone knows chicken wings, seriously,
everyone. If you don’t believe me, you probably
haven’t traveled much. You could probably
go on a chicken wing tour of the world to
see all the variations concocted by different
cultures and see most of the planet. From the
lime-paprika-cumin marinades in Peru to the
gojujiang-ginger-sesame bastes in Korea, you
can find a form of this finger-lickin’ snack or
appetizer wherever you go. It’s a pretty safe
thing to eat when traveling, too. If you’re too
afraid to try famous delicacies like dried shark,
fetus eggs or bird’s nest soup, you can always
fall back on chicken wings to get you through a
multicultural meal.
Not many cultures are as proud of wings as
Americans. Buffalo hot wings—supposedly
from Buffalo, New York—tend to be the most
popular variety, usually served up deep-fried
and doused in hot sauce. They are the most
prepared dish during Super Bowl season and
are so loved during that time of year that there
can even be a shortage of them in some areas.
There are whole restaurants dedicated to the
American love of chicken wings, and they serve
a plethora of variations, most of them proudly
boasting to serve the best wings around.
Being an American, I have sure missed
American-style wings in China, although I do
find it very amusing to see locals eat them with
chopsticks. Of course, I can always hit up a
local sports bar for their rendition of hot wings,
and I don’t have to look hard at all to find them
on Chinese menus or sold by street vendors.
They’re popular at KTV and just about
anywhere as an appetizer, and some of them
are absolutely delicious. You can even get them
sold on sticks like kebabs at shaokao places.
Making homemade wings hasn’t always been
easy, but pretty soon after moving here, I
learned to make a version of them in a pan on
the stovetop when I really needed a wing fix.
Later on, I bought a small oven and re-learned
the art of making crispy oven-baked wings,
the recipe for which is below. When making
them on the stovetop, they’re not going to be
very crispy, unless you actually deep fry them.
But try them out, you might like this style
even if the method seems strange. Season them
as below, put them in a pan, and then heat
them on medium-low until the meat is cooked
through. Turn up the heat for the final round
on each side, boiling off all remaining liquid
and letting the pan make them crispier. Since
these wings tend to be softer, you can add more
liquid marinades before cooking since they’ll
infuse well with the skin.
When baking them, however, you can make
them quite crispy without drying them out,
with a little patience and time. The recipe
below asks you to pour off fat halfway through,
which minimizes their unhealthiness. If you
want to try to make oven-baked hot wings
with an American flavor, find some hot sauce
at a local import store or have a friend buy
some from the States to bring to you. But, as
any person who has traveled and tried them
in different countries can tell you, wings can
be a blank canvas for a variety of flavors, so
get experimental and
try
different things. With
this
recipe below, you
don’t even need
sauce.
Oven-baked hot wings
Ingredients:
• 20 chicken wings and/or small drum sticks
• Sea salt and cracked black pepper
• 15mL extra-virgin olive oil
• Mixed Italian herbs, dried
• Garlic powder
• Hot wing sauce, if desired
Directions:
1. Preheat oven to 170 degrees C
2. Wash chicken wings and pat dry. Place in a mixing bowl.
3. Add oil and all seasoning to the wings, as much as desired
(start with a pinch of salt and 5mL each of the others). Mix to coat evenly.
4. In a glass pan (or, metal pan lined with foil), arrange wings so that they are
touching but not overlapped, skin side down.
5. Cook for 30 minutes.
6. Remove from oven, and drain fat from the pan. Rearrange wings
as before, with skin side up.
7. Cook for another 30 minutes and remove from heat.
8. Remove to a bowl and toss with sauce if desired,
preferably hot wing sauce.
Cooking tips:
When buying wings in the market, you might need to specify that you only want the meatier part of the wings, unless you do actually want to try the
wing tips. Wing tips don’t have very much meat, but they’re often cooked by street food vendors here. Traditional wings tend to be the middle segment
and upper arms, which also look like small drum sticks. If you think wings are too difficult to eat, you can follow this exact recipe for leg drum sticks as
well for similar results. Finally, when I want to spice up this recipe without changing the seasoning altogether, I add ingredients like fresh minced garlic,
minced spicy chili peppers, grated ginger, lemon juice or soy sauce.
Serve with: beer
Serving size: 4 as an appetizer

Talking Points
A supplement for grammar practice
In Chinese, there are many small words that have more
than one meaning and usage, but at the same time,
sometimes it is difficult to translate them into English.
For example 就(jiù).
Time + 就 + v.
就 emphasizes that an event has either occurred early
or been completed within a short time. For example,
lùxī zǎoshàng liùdiǎn jiù qǐchuáng le.
露西 早上 六点 就 起床 了。
Lucy got up at six in the morning.
就 is used for emphasis. For example,
nàgè chuān báisè yīfu de jiù shì wǒde lǎoshī.
那个 穿 白色衣服的 就 是 我的 老师。
The one wearing white is my teacher.
就 signifies two actions or events taking place in sequence
with the first following immediately after the second.
nǐ chī wán Wǎnfàn jiù kànhuìr diànshì ba!
你 吃 完 晚饭 就 看会儿 电视 吧!
Once you have finished dinner, you can watch TV

Cartoon Characters
Mnemonic devices that work
The radical日, pronounced rì, originally meant the sun. It also means a day
and daytime. Obviously, characters with 日always relate to the sun.
míng明 – bright, tomorrow. The right section, 月, is pronounced yuè and
means moon. In traditional culture, 日 and 月 together as a phrase means
the origination of all the world’s living things. When joined as a character,
it means bright or tomorrow, which is after a day and a night.
míngtiān xīngqī jǐ? / 明天 星期 几? / What day is it tomorrow?
qíng晴 - few or no clouds in the sky. The right part 青 pronounced qīng,

Culture Teller
By john Lombard
Call for Back Up
As local talent pools increase and companies
begin hiring management from their ranks,
working within and understanding cultural
divides becomes ever more critical. This month—
Flattery is a part of life, for some it is phony, for
others it’s just a part of life. Which are you?
n 1998, I got my first big cross-cultural
consulting job in China. I was hired
by a 5-star Chinese-owned hotel in
Qingdao to help them understand how
to upgrade their hotel to a more international
standard of quality and service. They were
facing fierce competition from international
hotels such as the Shangri-La and Equatorial,
and recognized that they needed to adapt to a
more international style of management and
service to attract foreign guests.
opportunity to undermine me. After almost a
year, I’d accomplished almost nothing. Well,
not quite nothing. I had failed to bring effective
cross-cultural change within their hotel, but I’d
learned one of the most valuable cross-cultural
lessons for myself.
What I realized too late, was that the
fundamental problem lay in the presentation.
The board of directors were all men over
50-years-old who’d been working in hotels
most of their lives; and I was a
30-something who’d never worked
in hotels. I was standing there not
only telling them what to do, but
also telling them that the decisions
they had made before were wrong.
Essentially, that they didn’t know
how to run the hotel, and I did.
The very people
who’d said I’d
done a great job,
and assured me
of their support,
took every possible
opportunity to
undermine me.
I had very little hotel
experience at that
time, so my first step
was three months of
extensive research. I
interviewed guests
from our hotel,
and some from
other hotels, to gain
perspective and learn
what would need to
change to get them
back. I interviewed
staff who’d previously
worked in our hotel,
and now worked in other hotels, to find
out what differences there were in training,
management, service expectations, etc.
After all this research, I prepared a wonderful,
professional six-hour presentation for the board
of directors, in which I explained the problems
I’d discovered, the changes needed, and the
strategies for accomplishing those changes. It
was a brilliant presentation, both thorough and
practical, a true roadmap to success. The board
congratulated me on my hard work, assured me
of their whole-hearted support, and told me to
begin implementing those changes.
And that’s where the whole thing fell to pieces.
Because when I started trying to implement,
absolutely nothing happened. The very people
who’d said I’d done a great job, and assured
me of their support, took every possible
The result, from their perspective,
was that if my efforts were
successful, and we turned the hotel
around, they would still lose face,
because everyone would know it
wasn’t their ideas that worked. But
if nothing changed and the hotel
lost money, they would save face. They could
point and say, “See, John’s ideas don’t work!”
I learned from this, and fortunately was
able to get a position doing almost exactly
the same thing in a Chinese-owned 4-star
hotel in Shanghai. This time, I didn’t need
so much time to do research. But I changed
how I presented that information. I first had
a meeting with the president of the hotel, in
private. I told him the problems I’d identified,
and got his feedback; the ones he disagreed
with, I took off the list. For each of the
remaining problems, I presented my strategies
for changing them; the ones he disagreed with,
I took off the list. In the end, we only had
about 60 percent of my original plan, but it was
60 percent that the president endorsed.
Then, when we had the meeting, the President
started by saying, “John and I had a meeting,
and I have decided that we are going to do this,
this, and this.” Then he had me do the rest of
the presentation.
The information and strategies were almost
identical. Yet while the first time was a
miserable failure, the second we accomplished
significant change in less than a year, boosting
the hotel’s reputation and sales by a significant
margin. The only difference was in how the
information was presented—in a way that gave
credit (and face) to the leaders of the hotel.
When talking about ‘face,’ it’s common to
observe that every culture has a concept of
losing face. The important difference is
understanding how one loses face (or gains
face) can be entirely different. For most
Westerners, it is determined simply by
success—and if they need to admit a mistake,
and use advice to accomplish that goal, they
would only gain more face for recognizing it.
But for many Chinese leaders, success may not
be the main determinant. It is paradoxically
possible to have a situation where making the
business more successful could mean losing
face personally.
Once understood, both sides can learn from
this. Most Chinese I’ve talked with are quite
direct in stating that this is one aspect
of Chinese culture that they
think needs to change (and
many are already changing),
that such a perspective
can have a very obvious
bad impact on China’s
development and progress.
And for expats in China,
understanding this can
help craft proposals
and ideas in a
way that
will be less
