Potential
The YMCA is a place where kids can feel like they belong. That matters
because, when they feel connected and accepted, kids become stronger
and healthier and they can grow up with the tools needed to succeed.
At the YMCA we provide the skills, encouragement and social
connections through our core services that kids need to fulfill their
potential.
These services are vital because healthy kids grow into healthy adults
who make up healthy communities. We currently serve more than 1.4
million kids, teens and young adults in our programs and services across
Canada. But there are also so many more that could use our help.
How did our YMCA help in 2013?
Through……
•a newly formed partnership with
Cramahe Township the YMCA delivered the summer day camp program with over 1200 registrants

Troy
Defying the odds and living to his full potential
Troy has spent most of his life overcoming
obstacles and defying the odds. Born with communicating hydrocephalus, also known as water on the brain,
doctors told Troy’s mother that he would likely not live
past his 10th birthday.
At three months old doctors inserted cerebral
shunts into Troy’s head that travel through his spine
and drain excess fluid from his brain. At age 10, during
a surgery to replace one of his shunts his doctors
experienced complications that left him paralyzed from
the knees down.
Troy was blessed with a wonderful friendship
and father figure in Chester Carsten, his caregiver and
closest companion of 25 years. In 2005 Chester passed
away from Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Losing his close friend
and roommate left Troy living on his own without
essential fellowship.
Troy joined YMCA Northumberland in 2010. He
swims a half a mile on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and
goes for a walk upstairs Mondays, Wednesdays and
Fridays. But most important of all, the YMCA gives him
a sense of belonging and a family of supportive and
motivating friends and community members.
Present five days a week come rain or shine, Troy
is a well-known figure at our YMCA. Because of his
openness and friendly disposition, Troy has become
a support person for members with disabilities. He is
grateful to the YMCA for being very well equipped for
people with disabilities. The facility offers members
easily accessible opportunities to be healthy and active
and staff are always open to suggestions on how to
make operations more available to all members and
are very quick to respond with updates.
Healthy and active 43 years past his original life
expectancy, Troy continues to push himself and live life
to his full potential. Very grateful for all that the YMCA
has done for him, Troy is an active volunteer for YMCA
Strong Kids. Doing what he can to give back, Troy helps
YMCA Northumberland make sure that every child
and family has the same opportunities to benefit from
YMCA programs.

Ashley
Building confidence and opportunity
As a teenager, Ashley was heading down a dangerous
path. Hanging out with peers who were skipping school,
stealing and doing drugs she dropped out of school
before getting her high school diploma.
In 2008, at the age of 18, Ashley became pregnant. At
that moment, her perspectives changed and she knew
she had to turn her life around in order to provide her
child with the best quality of life. Ashley enrolled in the
Teen Education and Mothering program (TEAM). TEAM,
hosted at CDCI East High School, provides teenagers ages
13-21 an opportunity to continue their high school
education, enhance their parenting skills, and seek
guidance while they receive on-site child care for their
infants.
The TEAM program became Ashley’s home away from
home and she credits Day Care Coordinator, Michelle
Weaver and Program Teacher, Erin Mackenzie as being
her rocks. They provided her with guidance, accompanied her to doctor’s appointments and meetings with
lawyers to gain sole custody of her child and were a
shoulder to cry on when needed. Michelle and Erin
showed compassion and empathy as they encouraged
Ashley and all of the students in the TEAM program to
succeed.
leadership
{lead·er·ship}
Ashley graduated high
school after just one year
and has since been a force
to be reckoned with. In
2011, she graduated the
Personal Support Worker
program from Fleming College and received a job at a
local retirement home. She used this job to gain experience in the healthcare field while saving money to pay
for her Registered Practical Nursing degree and will be
writing her final registration exam with the College of
Nurses this September.
Engaged to James, her supportive boyfriend and the
father of her children, Ashley is a devoted mother, strong
partner, and dedicated worker with a focused goal of
creating the best possible life for her family and children.
The TEAM program provided Ashely with the education,
support and self-confidence she needed to reach her
full potential. She is thankful to YMCA Northumberland,
Northumberland United Way, Northumberland County,
KPR District School Board and HKPR District Health Unit
for supporting her and many other young women who
have benefited from the program.

of our members become more engaged and contribute
more to their communities.

Hannah
It takes a village to raise a child
Hannah has always known that she is happiest
when being active. She joined her first YMCA while at
university. In the 80’s when 20 minute workouts were
most popular she sought out a local YMCA and was
impressed with the variety of activities available to her.
Hannah and her husband moved to Cobourg in
2002 and have been members of YMCA Northumberland ever since. She loves that the Y is very innovative
and that there are always new classes and activities to
try out.
After they started their family, taking advantage of
the play centre downstairs has been wonderful. Knowing that their children are close by and being cared for
gives her and her husband the confidence and security
needed to enjoy their workout.
When the children were old enough to participate,
Hannah and her husband began using a family
membership.
“ We never met a kid whose potential
we couldn’t see. “
8
It is said, “It takes a village to raise a child.” The
YMCA, its members and staff are part of their family
community. From an early age, the Y has been a place
for her children to have a bit of freedom outside of
their home where they can have fun and be active, all
the while feeling safe because of all the familiar faces.
As a family, having fitness as a regular part of their
daily schedule has brought balance to their lives. For
Hannah and her husband, having an outlet where they
can be healthy and active provides them with a break
from their busy work lives. For their children, activities
at the Y have enriched their lives. They do not mind
going to school because they know that at the end of
the day they will also get time to play sports with their
friends.
Hannah loves that she sees so many teenagers at
the YMCA. At this age when children begin making
their own decisions, it can be difficult to keep teenagers active and involved. As a teacher and mother,
Hannah is happy to see that the YMCA offers programs
that attract this age group. There is no competition
amongst members, all are welcome. Because of this
open, “join in” atmosphere, Hannah hopes that when
her son and daughters are old enough to begin coming
to the Y on their own, that they will enjoy the same
after school programs and activities that YMCA
Northumberland has been able to offer the teenagers
today.
Hannah looks forward to being involved in YMCA
programs for many years to come. When her children
are old enough, she hopes that by involving them in
healthy activities from an early age that they will not
be afraid to jump in and try new things.

Becoming your best you
In 2009, JR was diagnosed with pre-diabetes. With
a wife and young daughter, he took this as an opportunity to turn his life around. Knowing he did not want
to miss out on any of the great moments they would
share with their daughter and enjoy a long and happy
life with his wife, he made a conscious change to his
diet and lifestyle.
JR joined YMCA Northumberland later that year
and has been an active member ever since. Finding it
difficult to always be thinking of new exercise routines
on his own, he loves to take part in classes such as
Cyclefit, Strong Body, Hang and Ride and in the
summer he takes part in Boot Camp on the beach.
Weighing over 300 pounds when he first joined
the YMCA five years ago, JR is healthy and happy and
is down to 175 pounds. He has truly made fitness and
exercise a part of his life. Unless sick or out of town he
is at the Y six days a week and has successfully kept the
weight off.
Since joining YMCA Northumberland, JR has met
many supporting staff and members who have always
encouraged him in his weight loss goals. He started his
journey at home by making a change to his diet but
knows he could not have gotten all the weight off and
kept it off without the support of the YMCA services,
staff and wonderful members.
At the Y, there is no competitive attitude. Members
are accepted for who they are and everyone is always
very supported by staff and peers. He loves seeing the
wide variety of ages at the Y. With the diversity of
programming offered, there is something for everyone.
JR wants to continue to raise the bar for himself and
take his fitness to the next level. He is now
participating in Extreme Fitness classes and is a
volunteer Cycle Fit instructor. Participating in YMCA
programs and being active and healthy makes him very
happy. A big believer in preventative health, JR is an
active YMCA Strong Kids volunteer and wants to give
children and families in the community the same support, encouragement and opportunities he has been
given. Always looking for new chances to be involved,
JR plans to be a part of the YMCA community for many
years to come.
