Welcome to the 25th Annual Simsbury Fly-In
oday is a milestone for Simsbury Airport. The
Governor has issued an Official Statement
declaring September 19 to be Simsbury Fly-In Day
in celebration of the 25th anniversary of our event.
The Simsbury Fly-In has grown from a small
gathering of pilots who simply wanted to show their
aircraft to one another, to the largest event of its kind
in New England.
No one kept a record of the number of
airplanes at that first Fly-In, but some of the old
timers remember that it was just a handful – possibly
only 5 or 6. But the idea caught on. Every year since
then, the Fly-in has grown larger and larger.
Eventually, a formal organization was established to
do the planning and coordination for the event. The
car show aspect of the Fly-In began one year when
rain prevented the arrival of aircraft, and was so
popular that it has continued to grow into a major
event in its own right.
Within the last decade, local businesses began
to see the potential of the event as an advertising
venue. And within the past five years, many national

T
businesses, especially those involving aviation, have
also participated. We now provide display booths to
over 60 businesses, with more than 80 businesses
advertising in our beautiful Event Program.
Last year we began to offer a series of
aviation-related seminars. We are expanding our
seminars this year, and will include several speakers
who have made presentations at Oshkosh, the world’s
largest aviation event. You’ll find a description of
our seminars on page 13 of this Program.

EAA Chapter 324 Supports Simsbury Fly-In
By Mark Cigal
he Simsbury Fly-In is supported each year by
Chapter 324 of the Experimental Aircraft
Association. Chapter 324 is the Simsbury-based unit
of EAA, one of more than a thousand such groups
throughout the world.
EAA is the national association for people who
build and fly homebuilt aircraft, as well as those who
restore older airplanes and “warbirds”, and for
aerobatic, ultralight, and helicopter pilots. Formed in
1953, it provides a wide range of technical and training
services, information exchanges, aviation advocacy
with lawmakers, and a monthly magazine. More than
170,000 people are EAA members worldwide.
EAA also sponsors the Young Eagle Program.
Through this program, chapter 324 has the opportunity
to introduce the joy of flying to any local youth
with an interest in aviation. Check our website,
www.eaa324.org, or stop by our booth for more info
on future Young Eagle events.
A number of EAA members are based at
Simsbury Airport. Their homebuilt aircraft include two
RV6A’s, an RV8, an RV4, a Pitts Special, a Lancair
Legacy, and a Zenith. We are home base for a beautiful

There are also two RV9 kits under construction, and
an RV12.
Our local EAA Chapter welcomes anyone who
has an interest in aviation, especially those who are
building or restoring aircraft. The members offer
hands-on support and an active social life. Chapter 324

Welcome continued from page 1
Our success has also attracted several unique
displays for 2010. The “Terrafugia” is a car that
converts to an airplane (and vice versa). It will be on
display, and also the topic of one of our seminars.
For the first time, this year’s Fly-In will include the
RE/MAX tethered hot air balloon, which will
provide rides for spectators. It’s a great way to
experience ballooning without actually flying outside
the area of the Fly-In.
Each year we attract hundreds of beautiful
airplanes and autos for display. You are likely to
see restored aircraft built in the 1920’s, and as
mechanically sound as they day they left the factory.
You’ll also see many homebuilt airplanes, some
of the new Light Sport aircraft, helicopters, aerobatic
aircraft, and airplanes from every era up to the
modern day. Our display of autos features old
favorites such as Model T’s, fire engines,
ambulances, former military vehicles, and many
brands that have faded into history. One of the great
attractions of the event is that spectators can see the
cars and airplanes up close, as well as talk with their
owners.

We’re often asked about our motivation for
sponsoring the Fly-In. There are several answers.
First, we see the event as a way to let the general
public see what general aviation is all about. Second,
it is a major factor in the financing of Simsbury
Airport, which is self-supporting and receives no
funding from
any public
source. Third,
it is simply a
great way to
have a fun
family outing.
And finally,
we want the
local community to see the value of our airport and
the importance of preserving it “forever” as a vital
part of the economic, transportation, and social
fabric of our area.
We are glad you are here to help us celebrate
our 25th year. We cordially invite you to come back
again on Sept. 18, 2011. But don’t wait a year to visit
us: we welcome visitors at any time. Come sit on the
fence and watch the airplanes!

Aircraft Flying Today
Extra 300
Owned and flown by Ed Jepson, this is one of the most successful aerobatic aircraft in the world,
and is a frequent competitor in international events. Its 300 Horsepower Lycoming engine can move
it to speeds of up to 200 miles per hour, with 3,300 ft/minute climb. The Extra is a very nimble and
responsive aircraft that requires a highly competent pilot to take full advantage of its aerobatic
capabilities.
Ryan PT-22 “Recruit”
The PT-22, owned and flown by Taylor Smith, was an award winner at a previous Simsbury Fly-In.
It was the US Army Corps’ first monoplane training aircraft just prior to World War II and was used
throughout the conflict. Over 1,000 were built; some were flown by US allies. Powered by a 160 HP
Kinner radial engine, it cruises at 115 MPH with 323 mi. range.
Pitts S-1 Biplane
Owned and flown by Don Chamberlain, the Pitts S-1 is the first of a long line of aerobatic biplanes
designed by Curtis Pitts. For many years, these airplanes dominated aerobatic competition. Now
superseded by more sophisticated designs, they are still one of the most enjoyable airplanes around.
The S-1 is small, only 15-1/2 ft long with a wingspan of 17 ft. It weighs just 650 lbs. empty. The
normal cruise speed is 154 mph and it can climb at 1,700 to 2,600 ft/minute depending on what
engine is installed.
Yankee Clippers Formation Demonstration
PHOTO: BERT SIRKIN
The Yankee Clippers appear again this year to demonstrate precision military formation flight. They
fly high performance RV airacraft, the most popular of all homebuilt airplanes. John Doran is lead
pilot, flying his RV4 — a former Navy pilot who flew F-14 Tomcats. Second position is Scott
Jordan, an experienced USAF B-52 pilot; now a corporate pilot. Mark Cigal, third postion in his
RV8, was a USAF instructor pilot and now flies for American Airlines. Dick Axelrod is fourth slot
in his RV7. Dick lives in Vermont and this is his second year with the Clippers.

hen the GI’s returned home from World War II,
many dreamed that airplanes would be so
commonplace that most people would own one. And
why not make that even easier by combining an
airplane and a car? Then people could
keep their airplanes in their garages,
use them for errands around town and
for longer trips, drive to the airport,
unfold the wings, and fly away!
More than one inventor tried to
make this idea reality, but virtually all
failed. In 1946, Molt Taylor did build a
vehicle called the Aerocar. A few were
built, and it actually flew. But only three
remain. It was impractical and, at $25,000
per copy, very expensive for its time.

More than 100 brands of Light Sport airplanes
have now been certified, making it one of the fastest

turns out that a number of older airplanes also meet the
Light Sport criteria. For example, many older Piper

Sport. As a result, the Light Sport field provides a
wide choice of aircraft types, performance, and cost.

Light Sport continued from page 27
The licensing of Light Sport pilots is also
somewhat simpler than with standard airplanes. One of
the major differences is that a pilot is not required to
pass an FAA medical exam. Instead, pilots may operate
a Light Sport aircraft as long as they are medically
qualified to operate a motor vehicle. But Light Sport
pilots are not allowed to fly at night. They must take
flight training from a Certified Flight Instructor, and
pass both a comprehensive written test and a flight test.
And they are required to get a flight review every two
years to assure that their skills are up to snuff.
Will the Light Sport category actually meet its
goal of drawing more people into aviation? Only time
will tell. But at this early stage, all the results look
promising. So take time today and look at one of the
many Light Sport airplanes at the Fly-In. You’ll be
impressed.
