11th Festival CULLY CLASSIQUE
20 - 29 June 2014: « Vienna »
The 11th Festival CULLY CLASSIQUE (20-29 June 2014) will explore the theme « Vienna ».
The city of Vienna played an important role in the history of western music. Musicians from all over the
world stayed there for more or less long periods, rendering Vienna an international capital of classical
music, and of culture more generally. Some of the most important composers were Viennese by birth or
by adoption and composed their greatest works in this city.
Vienna witnessed two major periods within the history of music: The classical period and its tonal system

reached its peak in the 18 century with Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, who all lived in Vienna at the same
th
period. Two hundred years later, this very tonal system was deconstructed during the 20 Century by
composers such Schönberg, Berg and Webern (Second Viennese School).
This musically and historically fascinating topic will be explored through 21 concerts with internationally
renowned musicians.

2 NEW SERIES OF CONCERTS
« Nocturnes » | 5 concerts
An intimate space, a captivating atmosphere along with first-class artists… Organised on weekends at
10:30 PM at the Notre Dame church, these five concerts will present some the greatest masterpieces of
classical music. Among the artists invited for this series: pianist Cédric Pescia, the Keller Quartet and the
Belcea Quartet. To make the atmosphere all the more magical, these concerts will be candlelit.

« Découvertes » | 4 concerts
CULLY CLASSIQUE will be introducing tomorrow’s stars! These four concerts will give the audience the
opportunity to discover and meet young and talented artists in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere, and will
take place on the weekend at 4 PM at the Steinway Lounge. Musicians such as Russian pianist Sofja
Gülbadamova, Norwegian pianist Joachim Carr, Moldavian violinist Alexandra Conunova and French
cellist Olivia Gay, will participate in the “Découverte” series.

COUP DE CŒUR
Young musician award
New this year, a “Coup de Coeur” will be awarded to one of the musicians of the “Découverte” series. The
purpose of this prize is to reward a young and particularly talented artist. The Prize is offered by one of
the Festival’s partners, whose identity will be revealed shortly. The Jury will be comprised of music
professionals. The laureate will be given the opportunity to record under a well-known label and offered a
series of concerts, including one at the next CULLY CLASSIQUE.
NEW ’OFF PROJECT
“Students’ Crossroad”
Workshops, master classes and cultural transmission have always played an important role in the
Festival. In partnership with four international institutions, this new project will bring together students
from different faculties, including musicology, music, scenography and hotel school. They will offer more
than 25 concerts, as well as conferences, public rehearsals, round table conferences, as well as artist
interviews. The project will take place mainly on two sites: the Salle Davel and the Ancien Pressoir.

UNESCO World Heritage site since 2007, the vineyards of Lavaux were shaped over a thousand
years of labour. To make the most of the sunshine, wine growers accentuated its slopes by
building terraces, enabling the production of the regions’ highly appreciated “Chasselas”.
Situated between Lausanne and Montreux, on the shores of Lake Geneva, Lavaux displays 830 hectares
of terraced vineyards. The site enjoys a Mediterranean climate, with warm temperatures and beautiful
light reflecting on the lake.
The region is renowned for the quality of its wines, with widely recognized appellations such as Epesses,
Villette, Calamin and Dézaley. It can be explored on board little trains or on foot using the vineyard trails.
Wine cellars are open for wine tasting along the way.
The village of Cully is part of the commune of Bourg-en-Lavux, renown for its tourism as well as its
widespread cultural offer. Concerts, theatre plays, exhibitions, markets and other festivities are part of the
region’s every-day life. It also offers two major festivals: the Cully Classique and the Cully Jazz.

Founded in 1987 at the Liszt Conservatory of Music in Budapest, the Keller
Quartet already achieved their international breakthrough in 1990 winning all
prizes and special awards at the Evian and Borciani Competitions. Even
though the quartet members completed all their degrees as soloists, string
quartet playing has always been their first choice. Three of the Liszt
Conservatory’s most renowned professors took care of the young musicians
and can be regarded as their mentors to this very day: Sandór Devich,
András Mihály and György Kurtág, who also composes works for the quartet. The quartet has enjoyed
links to ECM for some time now and has recorded the “Art of the Fugue” by Bach as well as the
complete works for string quartet by Kurtág. In February 2003 the quartet recorded with A.Lubimov the
Schnittke’s Piano quintet and the last string quartet of Shostakovich, played in 2010 by the quartet in
CULLY CLASSIQUE. The quartet performed in the most known series and festivals such the Carnegie
Hall of New York, the Wigmore Hall of London and the Philarmonique of Berlin. The Keller Quartet
plays with the instruments dating the year 2000 of the german luthier Peter Greiner.
Alexei Lubimov, piano (Russia)
INAUGURAL CONCERT | Friday 20 june, 7:30 PM, Temple
Born in Moscow, the pianist Alexei Lubimov is one of the most strikingly
original musicians performing today. His large repertoire combined with his
dedication to principle and musical morals make him a notable exception in
today’s music scene. Following studies with Heinrich Neuhaus, he
established an early dual passion for baroque music performed on traditional
instruments and also 20th century composers. He has premiered many
contemporary pieces in Russia and founded a music festival there named
“Alternativa”. As political restrictions were lifted in Russia during the 1980s, Alexei Lubimov soon
emerged among the first rank of international pianists giving concerts all around the world. He has
appeared with orchestras such as the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Royal Philharmonic in London,
Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France and Deutsches Symphonieorchester Berlin under the
most important international conductors: Vladimir Ashkenazy, Paavo Järvi, Kent Nagano, Michael
Pletnev and Esa Pekka Salonen. In the world of chamber music, he performed regularly with famous
soloists and ensembles at festivals throughout the world. His recordings have been issued on various
labels including ECM, Erato or Sony featuring the complete Mozart sonatas, Schubert, Chopin,
Beethoven and Brahms as well as music of the 20th century. Alexei Lubimov’s recording of Schubert’s
Impromptus Op. 90 and Op. 142 was released in 2009 by Harmonia Mundi.
Khatia Buniatishvili, piano (Georgia)
EVENEMENT | Saturday 21 june, 7:30 PM, Temple
Born on 21 June 1987 in Tbilisi, Khatia Buniatishvili perfected herself in
Vienna with Oleg Maisenberg. She has won several international
competitions, including the famous Arthur Rubinstein’s Competition, which
marked the beginning of her career as a soloist. After her remarkable début
concert at Carnegie Hall in 2008 performing Chopin’s Second Piano
Concerto, she was critically acclaimed in concerts with the SaintPetersbourg Philarmonic Orchestra, the Los Angeles Philarmonic, the
Orchestra della Scala of Milan and the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra. She has given recitals
throughout the entire world and performed in festivals such as Aspen, Ravinia, Salzbourg, La Roque
d’Antheron, the Folles Journée de Nantes and the Proms of London. In 2010 she received a BorlettiBuitoni Trust Award, nominated by Vienna’s Musikverein and Konzerthaus as a Rising Star for the
2011/2012 season and won the famous ECHO Price 2012 in Berlin. She has recorded a CD with ECM
(trio with Gidon Kremer and Giedre Dirvanauskaite) and two CDs with Sony (one dedicate to Franz
Liszt and the other to Frédéric Chopin).

Les Passion de l’Âme (Switzerland)
GRAND CONCERT | Sunday 22 june, 6:00 PM, Temple
Les Passions de l’Ame, Bern’s resident early music ensemble directed by
violinist Meret Lüthi, has been seeking to create fresh sounds since 2008.
Lively interpretations on historical instruments are the trademark of this
international orchestra. The name of the orchestra refers to an essay
written by René Descartes in 1649, in which the philosopher speaks of the
passion which mediates between body and soul. The ensemble perceives
music as having precisely this mediative role, and aims to transmit "les
passions" with immediacy in concert. This baroque ensemble aims to arouse curiosity for both known
and unknown 17th- and 18th-century repertoire with its snappy and witty programs, such as „Passion
Attacks“, „The Seven Deadly Sins“, or „Delirio Amoroso“ in its successful concert series in Bern, „Alte
Musik? – Ganz neu!“. Released by SONY Music Switzerland in September 2013, the ensemble
published his first CD, "SPICY", a programme that Les Passions de l’Ame will present this year at the
CULLY CLASSIQUE.
Boris Berezovsky, piano (Russia)

Born in Moscow, Boris Berezovsky studied at the Moscow Conservatory
with Eliso Virsaladze and privately with Alexander Satz. Subsequent to his
London debut at the Wigmore Hall in 1988, the Times describe him as “an
artist of exceptional promise, a player of dazzling virtuosity and formidable
power”. Two years later, he won the Gold Medal at the 1990 International

Nicholas Angelich, piano (USA)

Born in the United States in 1970, he played his first concert at the age of 7
and he entered at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique in Paris
at 13, where he studied with Aldo Ciccolini, Yvonne Loriod, and Michel
Beroff. Prizewinner of numerous piano competitions, he won the
International Piano Competition Gina Bachauer in Utah, he received the
“International Klavierfestival Ruhr - Young Talent Award” and in 2013 he
won as “Solist instrumentalist of the year” in the Victoires de la musique
classique. He has performed with the most important orchestras such as the Los Angeles
Philharmonic, the London Philharmonic, the Mariinsky Theatre Orchestra and the New York
Philharmonic under the most important directors. His chamber collaborations include critically
acclaimed performances with Joshua Bell, Maxim Vengerov, Renaud and Gautier Capuçon and the
Ebène Quartet. His recording of the Brahms quartet, trios and sonata with Renaud and Gautier
Capuçons for Virgin Classics was awarded the German Record Critics’ Prize, and he has also
released recordings which feature works by Beethoven, Liszt, Ravel and Rachmaninov. Recently
Nicholas Angelich has recorded the Bach Goldberg Variations.

Mario Brunello, violoncelle (Italy)

In 1986 Mario Brunello was the first Italian ever to win the Tchaikovsky
Competition in Moscow, which launched him into a stunning international
career. He has played with some of the most prestigious orchestras, including
the London Philharmonic, London Symphony, Filarmonica della Scala,
Accademia di Santa Cecilia with conductors such as Valery Gergiev, Yuri
Temirkanov, Riccardo Chailly, Seiji Ozawa and Claudio Abbado. He often takes
on the dual roles of conductor and soloist, and in 1994 he founded the
Orchestra d’Archi Italiana with whom he tours intensively both in Italy and abroad. He often collaborates
with artists including Gidon Kremer, Martha Argerich, Yuri Bashmet and Maurizio Pollini. He also devotes
much time to projects involving diverse art forms (literature, philosophy, science, theatre). Through new
ways of communication he tries to attract new audiences, creating interactive performances of music,
images and words. The diverse artistic genres with which Brunello experiments are reflected in a wide
ranging collection of recordings which include the Beethoven Triple Concerto conducted by Claudio
Abbado (Deutsche Grammophon), the Bach Suites and Sonatas by Brahms, Beethoven and Chopin,
contemporary works for solo cello, and a five-CD “Brunello Series” on Egea Records. His most recent CD
was released by EMI, featuring Dvorak’s Concerto recorded live in Rome with the Accademia di Santa
Cecilia Orchestra. Mario Brunello plays a precious Maggini cello from the 1600s.
Trio Saint Exupéry (Europe)

Created in 2012, the Trio Saint-Exupéry, through its members’ nationalities,
draws a line between Europe’s three French speaking countries: France,
Belgium and Switzerland. The Trio Saint-Exupéry has recently performed
on major European stages including Victoria Hall of Geneva, the Jerusalem
Music Center, Radio France in Paris and the Kurfürstlichen Schloss in
Mainz. They were in famous festivals such as the Verbier Festival or the
Villa Musica in Germany where they followed the guidance of Gabor
Takacs-Nagy and Menahem Pressler. Their deep musical friendship is enriched by a shared passion
for aviation and poetry. Antoine de Saint-Exupéry perfectly embodies this confluence of passions: his
sensitive humanism and his unending search to transcend the quotidian to enter higher spheres
serves as an unquenchable source of inspiration for these young musicians. For the season 20122015 the Trio Saint-Exupéry are “artists in residence” at the Villa Musica in Rhénanie-Palatinat, where
they played in the autumn of 2012 with Menahem Pressler during a tour in Germany.
Michael Jarrell, composition (Switzerland)

Born on October 8 1958 in Geneva, Michael Jarrell studied composition at
the Geneva Conservatory with Eric Gaudibert and at various workshops in
the United States. He completed his training with Klaus Huber at the
Freiburg Staatliche Hochschule für Musik im Brisgau. Starting in 1982, his
works have received numerous prizes: prix Acanthes (1983),
Beethovenpreis from the city of Bonn (1986), Marescotti prize (1986),
Gaudeamus (1988), Henriette Renié (1988), and Siemens-Förderungspreis
(1990). Between 1986 and 1988, he was in residence at the Cité des Arts in Paris and took part in the
computer music course at Ircam. He resided at the Villa Médicis in Rome during 1988/89, and then
joins the Istituto Svizzero di Roma in 1989/90. From October 1991 to June 1993, he was composer in
residence with the Lyon Orchestra, and in the same year he became professor of composition at the
University in Vienna. In 1996, he is "composer in residence" at the Lucerne festival. In 2001, the
Salzburg Festival commissioned a concerto for piano and orchestra entitled “Abschied”. The same
year, Michael Jarrel was named "Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres" and professor of composition at
the Geneva Conservatory.

Belcea Quartet (UK)

Founded at the Royal College of Music in London in 1994, the Belcea
Quartet blends its diverse influences into a common musical language.
The quartet's open-minded approach to music invariably enables it to find
its own unique, elegant and refined interpretations of the main string
quartet repertoire. The quartet performs regularly to great acclaim in
concert halls across the world, among them the Concertgebouw in
Amsterdam, the Palais des Beaux-Arts in Brussels and the Carnegie Hall
in New York. The quartet’s regular partners include Piotr Anderszewski, Valentin Erben and Matthias
Goerne. The quartet has shared a residence at the Vienna Konzerthaus with the Artemis Quartet
since 2010 and it is also in residence at London's Guildhall School of Music and Drama. During its
long-term association with EMI Classics, the quartet recorded the complete Britten and Bartók
quartets as well as works by Schubert, Brahms, Mozart, Debussy, Ravel and Dutilleux. The quartet's
performances of the complete Beethoven string quartets at Vienna's Konzerthaus were filmed in May
2012. Music of the 20th century (works of Schoenberg, Webern and Berg) will play an important part
in the Belcea Quartet's 20th anniversary celebrations in Autumn 2015.
