March 6 RESORT EXPERIENCE RESORT EXPERIENCE 7 Links on Longboat Harbourside Courses Redesigned by Ron Garl in 2014 The Links on Longboat (formerly Islandside) has many characteristics of a seaside links course. Ocean breezes, expansive natural areas and big greens create an incredible golfing experience. Links on Longboat stretches out to 6,748 yards from end to end with five sets of tees to accommodate any level of play. The Par 71 layout demands accuracy off the tee. Most holes feature small waterways that run along one side of the fairway to force you into a decision on placement validating the original “watery challenge” description. Once you have driven your ball in a good fairway position that is where the fun begins. Our new Ron Garl design challenges your iron play but also does not penalize you for an errant shot. Fewer bunkers and more grassed collection areas allow the golfer to have an easy pitch to the hole if you have missed the green. Each green has been completely redesigned with Ron’s creative imagination and all 18 holes have been re-grassed with the superior, salt tolerant Platinum Paspalum grass. In addition to the beauty of the natural wildlife seen on a daily basis, over 5,000 Palm trees along with pink and white Oleanders line the Links on Longboat. Harbourside is located three miles north of the Links on Longboat and is commonly known as “the Member’s course” here at the Club. Harbourside consists of three nines that make up three distinctive eighteen hole options. All three nines vary in characteristics but all pose a great challenge when deciding which to play. 2015 In-Season Golf Rates Before 1 pm Cart Fee TOTAL FEE Hotel Guest 18 holes (before 1pm) $106 $24 $130 Hotel Guest 18 holes (after 1pm) $66 $24 $90 Hotel Guest 9 holes before 1pm $52 $13 $65 Hotel Guest 9 holes (after 1pm) $40 $13 $53 The Red Hawk was recently redesigned by architect Ron Garl who challenges the golfer with many risk and reward opportunities. More open and forgiving than the White Egret, this nine has water that plays into many shots. The Red Hawk measures 3,323 and this past season the entire nine was re-sodded with the ever popular Platinum Paspalum grass. This new playing surface gives you a great lie every time and makes the game a pleasure to play. Junior Rate 18 holes (before 1pm) $20 $24 $44 Junior Rate 18 holes (after 1pm) $20 $24 $44 Junior Rate 9 holes (before 1pm) $20 $13 $33 Junior Rate 9 holes (after 1pm) $20 $13 $33 The final nine at Harbourside is our famous “Blue Heron” measuring 3,411 yards—our signature nine of all 45 holes here at Longboat Key Club. This nine was redesigned in 2005 and this year re-sodded with the new Platinum Paspalum grass as well. This nine boarders the Sarasota Bay with breathtaking views at every turn. It contains nine “signature” holes and challenges every part of your game.Treelined fairways and swirling winds put a premium on shot-making and course strategy. Courses designed by Willard Byrd: Rental Clubs 18 holes $65 $65 Rental Clubs 9 holes $35 $35 Harbourside opened for play in 1982. Many of the holes border the Sarasota Bay and our own Longboat Key Club Moorings which makes for a beautiful setting. The White Egret nine measures 3,426 yards and has the least amount of water of the three nines. Don’t let the lack of water on this nine fool you. Its difficulty is found in tight fairways which demands accuracy off the tee. Once you’ve positioned yourself correctly, big inviting greens give you plenty of target to aim at. The Red Hawk - 3,323yards The Blue Heron - 3,401 yards The White Egret - 3,426 yards Enjoy five sets of tees on all three nines. RESORT EXPERIENCE 13 S- -R-E-T-C-H The Fountain of Youth has always been elusive and never clearly defined, but following a few simple guidelines to maintain flexibility and stamina, along with a daily s-t-r-e-t-c-h, will keep your personal fountains of youth glowing within for years to come! Stretching releases dopamine which helps you feel happier and more positive and benefits daily habits such as eating, sleeping and socializing. Stretching is important at any age – and can keep you limber for a lifetime. Balance, improved posture, a clearer mind, lessened pain and increased energy levels are just a few pluses that can be achieved from a daily 10 minutes stretch warm-up. Allowing you to perform at peak performance on the golf course, tennis courts, running, swimming or your sport of choice, this is the optimal exercise for achieving successful outcomes on your scorecards. Warm up with a great stretching routine every day and you will begin to notice results in a timely manner. And it does not need to be boring by any means! Use your balance balls, yoga mats, isometric bands or anything that catches your interest to incorporate into your routine. Make it fun, make it simple and you will make it easy for yourself to do it on a daily basis. It is important not to bounce during a stretch–keep the motion fluid and sustained as the fibers in your muscles elongate naturally. Bouncing and abrupt movements can cause muscle fibers to tear. They are elastic by nature and need to unwind slowly, just as it took a while for them to become tightened. Take caution when stretching cold muscles–a warm-up is vital to bring blood flow and nutrients 14 RESORT EXPERIENCE into the muscle tissues. Breathing naturally is recommended. Balance out your routine by switching your focus to alternating muscle groups. For instance, if you stretch the front thigh muscles pay attention to the opposing musculature in the back of your legs. If you are plagued by old injuries make sure to check with a physician before doing anything too strenuous and make sure to warm up cold muscles before participating in a demanding exercise routine. And always remember, what is right for you might not be the exact fit for another person so pay attention to your responses and honor your body’s signals. If it hurts, you are pushing your body too hard. There is a big difference between the “burn” we feel from exercise and actual pain. If you feel any discomfort realign and reevaluate your movements and adjust to a routine that is right for you. The Mind & Motion fitness Schedule is packed with opportunities to integrate stretching into your exercise routine. Golf Stretch, Stretch on the Go, Stretchable You, Spin™ and Stretch and Yoga in all its forms are perfect opportunities offered throughout the week right here at the Fitness Center. A new addition to the Club this year is the Active Isolated Stretch performed by Alisa Zavalis. This is a one-on-one personal training session that utilizes a specific method of effective, dynamic, facilitated stretching that elongates the muscles and promotes fascial release. This improves fitness, athletic performance, circulation and increases the elasticity of the muscles, joints and fascia. It also helps to reprogram the brain and enables those with injuries to recover more quickly. - Nancy Thielman, Director of Spa RESORT EXPERIENCE 15 and Body Polish Ocean Salt Scrub SALTS OF THE EARTH BODY SCRUB Restore your skin’s natural glow with certified organic botanical and essential oils, moisturizing shea butter and an exotic blend of the most mineral-rich salts found on this earth. With access from the Intracoastal Waterway, the Gulf of Mexico and Sarasota Bay, Longboat Key Club Moorings offers more in the way of amenities and location than most all other marinas. Our maritime guests can experience the beautiful beach, enjoy fine or casual dining in eight restaurants and lounges, immerse themselves in island-inspired services at The Spa and take fitness classes at Mind & Motion Studio if they need a break from dock life. The marina can accommodate vessels up to 150’ in length and guests enjoy complimentary wi-fi, a private pool and tennis court, a beautifully stocked Ship’s Store, excellent dining at Portofino Ristorante and a full spectrum of maintenance services as well as a convenient fuel dock. Yacht brokerage services are also available for those that might want to trade up to a larger yacht. Located in the midst of a wildlife sanctuary, the surroundings are pristine and filled with a wide variety of native exotic birds and marine mammals. Longboat Key Club Moorings is a Certified Florida Clean Marina and takes great pride in its environmentally friendly initiatives. Most importantly, a 5-star staff is available to accommodate your every need. The wonderful sense of “community” that pervades this beautiful marina is what keeps boaters coming back year after year. To contact the Marina Concierge, please call (941) 383– 8383 or email at [email protected]. 24 RESORT EXPERIENCE RESORT EXPERIENCE 25 Whether a novice or a seasoned player– there is no better way to spend a sunny afternoon under the oaks! What better way to pass a leisurely afternoon than enjoying the company of good friends, sipping cocktails while immersing yourself in the amazing vista of Sarasota Bay at the marina and engaging in friendly competition over a game of bocce! There is no better lawn game that complements the leisurely pace of a sunny Florida day than this ancient game whose modern day adaptation most closely resembles bowling. Bocce (or bocci) is a ball sport belonging to the boules sport family closely related to bowls and pétanque. They all have a common ancestry to ancient games played in the Roman Empire and it has developed into its present form in Italy where the name bocce is the plural form of the Italian word boccia, which means “bowl.” Our bocce court is located directly behind the Ship’s Store at Longboat Key Club Moorings and is available for all Members to enjoy. The picnic-like atmosphere under the oaks and the ambiance of being surrounded by the hundreds of beautiful yachts and sailboats makes for a relaxing interlude on a sunny day or a fun way to get a little exercise in before indulging in a great woodoven pizza and a fine Italian wine dinner at Portofino Ristorante. The game is simple and can be very strategic for those that become masters of the game. Special “throws” and unique hand acrobatics are frequently put into play which can become as dramatic and humorous as it is fun. Here are a few tips that will set you on the path to success! A regulation bocce court is 76 feet long and 10 feet wide and has a foul line which is 10 feet from the throwing end of the court. This is where the “pallina” or small ball will be thrown from, towards the opposing end of the court. Teams between two to four players each are each allocated four balls, divided equally among the players. The object of the game is to score 16 points by getting your balls as close to the “pallina” as possible without touching it. Players take turns throwing the larger balls, “boccia,” until one of the balls stops closer to the “pallina” than the starting player’s ball. If no one throws a ball closer than the original team’s attempt, the starting team tries to outdo its first play. Players continue on with rounds in this fashion until 26 RESORT EXPERIENCE all eight balls have been thrown. The team with the closest ball gets one point for each of its balls that are closest to the “pallina.” If the two teams’ closest balls are an equal distance from the “pallina” no points are awarded and the competition continues! After all eight balls have been thrown and appropriate points have been awarded, it is time to move on to another round or “frame” with the scoring team throwing the first ball. If no team previously scored the team that threw the “pallina” last begins the frame. Play as many frames as you like and take as long as you want to achieve the 16 points needed to claim victory. And, if someone forgets to keep score, no one is the wiser. Have fun, relax, enjoy. Please call the Ship’s Store at 941383-8383 to reserve the court for you and your guests. RESORT EXPERIENCE 27 A Cosmic Collision of Sweet and Heat Chocolate and Chiles As forces in nature collide and connect, so too does the pairing of chocolate and chiles, an historically prominent combination of ingredients used among the Mesoamerican peoples as far back as 4,000 BC. The Aztecs were among the first to create the concoction, a bitter and spicy drink called xocolatl, renowned for its ability to fight fatigue and impart stamina. Associated with Xochiquetzal, the goddess of fertility, chocolate was consumed by Mesoamerican cultures on a daily basis. Seasoned with vanilla bean, chile peppers and achiote it had affects similar to what we experience with caffeine. Xocolatl was really the “coffee” of its day. Traditional Mexican mole combines the two ingredients to create a one-of-a-kind sauce. The trick is to keep the two ingredients balanced, so one does not overpower the other. Give yourself, and someone you love, a little delicious indulgence this Valentine’s Day. Chocolate and chile is not only a decadent and fun diversion, it is also a heart healthy treat. Spice up recipes with some Chocolate and Chile variations and see what response you get – your friends and family will enjoy the fact that they are being “seduced” by savory meals with hints of chocolate and warm, peppery spice. The complex flavors will add a real “kick” to your next meal. -Sandra Rios, Director of Communications 28 RESORT EXPERIENCE Cooking with Chocolate and Chiles Mix ground coffee, unsweetened cocoa powder and dried, chopped chiles to make a dry rub for grilling meat. Add cacao nibs and a few chile flakes to a green salad for a crunchy, healthy snack. Sprinkle crushed cacao nibs mixed with dried chile flakes over puréed vegetable soups, such as cauliflower and parsnip. If you are ambitious and make pasta from scratch, add unsweetened cocoa powder to the dough for a delightful variation, add a few sprinkles of chile on top. For the breakfast bunch, take sliced, wholegrain bagels, cover with peanut butter and sliced bananas and sprinkle at touch of unsweetened cocoa powder on top, chiles optional.
